C.W. POST PIONEERS 2010 CROSS COUNTRY Women’s Report

2010 season preview

As always, the main goal for any new season is to reach the top. That will be no different for the women’s cross country team, as they hope to accomplish their goal of winning the East Coast Conference Championship. They also will be looking to crack the top 10 rankings for women cross country teams in the east region. The team will return three student-athletes, one being Erin Lusenskas (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.). Lusenskas will return to the squad as a graduate student, and looks to continue her outstanding career. She ran her personal best 5k last year, where she completed the course at the Codfish Bowl in a time of 20:37.3. She also earned a place on the All-Conference Second Team after her performance at the East Coast Conference Championships. Other returners include sophomores Caitlin Smith (Levittown, N.Y.) and Katherine Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.). Smith comes off a 2009 campaign where she ran one of the fastest 5k’s in nearly five years at the school. The course time was registered at 20:28.4, completed at the NYIT course on Sept. 19. She also earned a place on the All-Conference First Team after her performance at the championships. Wilkens also saw her best 5k time come at the NYIT race. And at the East Conference Championships, she completed the course with a time that would land her on the All-Conference Second Team. Both will look to make even bigger impacts this year. With the returners, there will also be five new additions that will look to contribute right away. Coming in will be a standout from Berkeley Preparatory in Florida, as well as a state qualifier, Angelica Price (Tampa, Fla.). Joining her will be New York state qualifiers Jennifer McLaughlin (Seaford, N.Y.) and Karissa Chiantella (Bayville, N.Y.). Jennifer will also be coming in with her twin sister Sara McLaughlin (Seaford, N.Y.). The final new comer will be Suffolk County Community College transfer Angela Pereira (Islip, N.Y.). All additions have many hopes for the season and will look to help the women’s team climb the regional rankings and win an East Coast Conference Championship.

Men’s Report

The men’s cross country team enters the 2010 season at top of the East Conference preseason poll, as well as seventh in the East Region Rankings, the only ECC team to be

ranked in the top 10. The goals for the season are to repeat as East Coast Conference Champions as well as break into the top five in the East Regional Rankings. The only loss from last year’s team was Thomas Brouillard. However, Brouillard will be returning to the team as an assistant coach and will look to share his knowledge and guidance with all Pioneer racers. Sophomore Christian Altamura (Seaford, N.Y.) was named the East Coast Conference Pre-Season Runner of the Year on the men’s side. His personal best in the 8k came at the Codfish Bowl, where he clocked a time of 27:09. Altamura also continued his great season with a placement on the All-Conference First Team after a great race at the ECC Championships. The future looks bright for Altamura, and he will look to help lead the men’s team as well as improve individual records. Altamura will be joined by five returners. Graduate Student Vincent Giambanco (Muttontown, N.Y.) comes off a 2009 season where he set a personal best, as well as a college best in nearly four years, with a time of 26:05.80. Giambanco was also part of the All-Conference Second Team. The remaining returners enter the 2010 season as sophomores. Raymond Coyle (Woodhaven, N.Y.) placed 71st at the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional last year. Also finishing with a good time at the regional was David Johnson (Flushing, N.Y.). Johnson placed 43rd at the competition, helping C.W. Post finish 10th as a team. Earning a spot on the All-Conference First Team in the 2009 Conference Championships was Matthew O’Keefe (East Rockaway, N.Y.). O’Keefe also finished one spot behind Coyle at the regional. The last returner is Thomas Speicher (Levittown, N.Y.). Speicher is looking to challenge for a top spot on the men’s team this year after sitting out last year due to an injury. The newcomers include three runners that will look to have an immediate impact. Nassau County two-mile champion and cross country champion freshman Joseph Lasher (Seaford, N.Y.) joins the team out of Seaford. Sophomore Troy Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y.) comes from Bishop Loughlin and freshman Michael Fitzsimmons (Hazlet, N.J.) joins the team from Raritan. The season will start Sept. 11, when the Pioneers will open at the Hofstra Invite.

C.W. POST PIONEERS 2010 CROSS COUNTRY

David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.

Administration

He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977. The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and buildings and grounds. His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976.
