Head Coach Fifth Season

John Jez is in his fifth season as head men’s lacrosse coach at C.W. Post. Jez is only the eighth head coach in the 52 years history of the program. The Pioneers have reestablished the strong winning tradition and perennial national dominance of the men’s program at the Long Island University. Team and individual success have gone hand in hand during Jez’s tenure. Two national titles and a pair of conference championships have come under the watch of Jez. Twenty four players have earned East Coast Conference year end honors, including 2009 ECC Player of Year, Greg Cerar, and 2008 ECC Rookie of the Year, Michael Messina. Jez has also helped his players to earn a combined 24 All-America distinctions, including 10 First Team, nine Second Team and five Honorable Mention selections. Under his tutelage, Cerar and Michael Cama were honored as top players in their respective positions by the USILA. Cerar was honored as the 2009 Lt. Col. J Turnbull Award winner for Outstanding Attackman of the Year and the 2009 Lt. Raymond Jenners award for National Player of the year. Cama was honored as both the 2010 and 2009 Specialty Player of the Year. Jez also stresses excellence in the classroom, resulting in four players earning USILA Scholar All-American honors, including Matt Dimler (2008), Greg Cerar (2009), David Loftus (2009) and Dan Sciulla (2009). Each semester, more than 20 of Jez’s players have been recognized with the C.W. Post Athletic Academic Achievement Award. This award is given to student-athletes that obtain a 3.0 or higher semester GPA. Many student-athletes who have achieved a 3.25 or better were named to the ECC Commissioner Honor Roll. In 2010, C.W. Post captured its second straight and third overall national title in a rematch over LeMoyne at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. The Pioneers bounced back from a halftime deficit to defeat the Dolphins, 14-9, and finished the season as the top-ranked team in the final USILA national poll. The Pioneers led the national in man-up scoring percentage and had the highest winning percentage among all Division II teams with a program-best 16-1 record. The 2009 team finished as NCAA Division II National Champions after defeating LeMoyne, 8-7, in front of more than 24,000 fans at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The Pioneers wrapped up the season with a 15-1 record and a .938 winning percentage, which was second best in the nation. The offense was ranked No. 1 nationally averaging, 15.06 goals per game and they scored at least 10 goals against all but one opponent. For his efforts, Jez was honored as the 2009 USILA and FieldTurf/NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. This also marked the best scoring offense in the 50-year history of the C.W Post lacrosse program. The man-up and face-off units also led the nation in 2009, with the man-up unit scoring 51 percent of the time and the face-off unit, posting a 67.5 win percentage. The 2008 and 2007 seasons were also very successful under Jez’s leadership. The Pioneers were ranked fourth nationally both years and ranked the highest in many

Assistant Coach Fifth Season

A veteran lacrosse coach at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, Frank Vitolo enters his fifth season as the program’s top assistant and defensive coordinator. “Frank is one of the top defensive coaches in the nation,” says head coach John Jez. “His hard work and dedication has continued our program’s winning tradition and without him we would not be at the level of competitiveness we are at today. His game preparation is unmatched. C.W. Post lacrosse is blessed to have his guidance and leadership. I do not know what we would do without him.” Prior to joining Jez’s staff, Vitolo was an assistant with the New Jersey Pride of the Major League Lacrosse from 2002-05 and also spent eight seasons on the coaching staff at Northeast-10 member Pace University. Vitolo served as the Setters’ head coach from 2000-02 and his team was nationally ranked during that time. In 2010, Vitolo was the architect of a defensive unit that posted a 5.88 goals against average (second-best nationally) and the best mark for a Pioneer defense in over 38 years (1972 - 5.30 goals against average). Under his leadership, Joe Blount (First Team), Richard Schmidt (First Team) and Bryan Leonard (Second Team) all earned USILA All-America honors. In 2009, Vitolo’s defensive unit posted a 6.199 goals against average (second-best nationally). C.W. Post held 15 of its 16 opponents to fewer than 10 goals. Under Vitolo’s guidance, defensemen Bryan Leonard, Joe Blount and Jon Kology earned USILA All-America honors. In addition, Vitolo was bestowed the 2009 Division II Assistant Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association for his outstanding work in helping the Pioneers capture their second national title. In both 2007 and 2008, Vitolo’s defensive units ranked among the best in NCAA Division II statistical categories. The 2007 team was fourth in scoring defense (7.85 goals per game) and fourth in man-down defense (81.9 percent stoppage). His 2008 defense was fifth in scoring defense (6.79 goals per game) and eighth in man-down (75 percent stoppage). In the last four seasons, Vitolo has coached nine defensive All-Americans at C.W. Post. Among those honored are four First Team selections Rob Blount (2007), Chase Safarowic (2007), Bryan Leonard (2009) and Joe Blount (2010); three Second Team selections Bryan Leonard (2008, 2010), Joe Blount (2009) and one Honorable Mention selection, Jon Kology in 2009. A longtime resident of Somers, N.Y., Vitolo spent over 20 years as head coach at Lakeland High School, where he accumulated more than 300 victories. During the summer of 1990, Vitolo coached the Hudson Valley boys’ lacrosse team to a gold medal finish at the Empire State Games. Forsyth is completing his degree in business management at C.W. Post. He coaches several youth teams during the summer, including the Minnesota LaxLoon and resides in Plymouth, Minn.

He will work with the offense and the management of the midfield units. In 2010, Gencorelli helped guide the Pioneers to a school best 16-1 record and third national title. His tuteledge helped midfielders Mike Messina and Joe Meo both earn USILA Second Team All-America honors. In 2009, Gencorelli helped the Pioneers to a 15-1 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in East Coast Conference play. Midfielders Matt Dimler (First Team) and Mike Messina (Honorable Mention) were named All-America. The offense was the nation’s top scoring offense in 2009 and averaged 15.06 goals per game. As an assistant, Gencorelli is a vital part of the team’s success. Gencorelli’s game day responsibilities will primarily be with the substitution area and midfield. During his senior and junior seasons at NYIT, Gencorelli was named caption for the Bears. In 2005 and 2008 his play helped NYIT claim NCAA national titles. “Chris brings an abundance of energy to our program,” says Jez. “His hard work and dedication is unmatched. He has had an instant impact on our program and our athletics department. He is well liked by our players and is a role model for our student-athletes.” During the summer, Gencorelli coaches the Long Island Express and continues to play in various summer leagues and tournaments. Joe Blount joins the C.W. Post coaching staff after a fouryear career with the Pioneers. Blount played in 59 career games, and was a member of the Pioneers back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2009 and 2010. A standout defender for C.W. Post, Blount was a two-time All-ECC selection as well as a two-time USILA All-American, after totaling 93 ground balls over and 70 caused turnovers for his career. A native of Inwood, N.Y., Blount attended Lawrence High School and received all-Nassau County recognition in both lacrosse and football.

Assistant Coach First Season

Rich Schmidt joins the coaching staff after a two-year stint as a member of the Pioneers, where he was a two-time All-ECC selection as well as a 2010 USILA First Team All-American. He will work alongside Coach Vitolo in the guidance of the defense. “Richie was a main reason for our success in 2009 and 2010,” says head coach John Jez. “ He is a tough player and a great role model for our young defense. Schmidt, a defensive staple for the Pioneers back-to-back National Championships in 2009 and 2010, accumulated 73 ground balls and caused 42 career turnovers. His career included 30 starts in 33 career games, including a pair of goals and assists offensively. A resident of Hicksville, N.Y. he played three years of varsity lacrosse for the Comets. After graduating, he played for Division I Sacred Heart, before transferring to NJCAA member Nassau Community College for his sophomore year. 15 assists. Jez notes that Patterson has the best vision on the team and he is projected to play a lot of minutes on the frontline. Says Jez, “Justin stepped into a starting role midway through the 2010 season and has shown he is a huge asset to our scoring success.” Senior Vito Minerva (Nesconset, N.Y.) and junior Tom Giordano (Garden City, N.Y.) each bring a hard work mentality to the group. Minerva has been a hard working and skilled player throughout his career at C.W. Post. Remarks Jez, “Vito does anything he is asked to do.” Minerva tallied six goals with 12 assists in 14 games played last season. Giordano saw limited action last season but has worked hard since the fall season and will push for more time up front. Junior Owen Campbell (Massapequa, N.Y.) transferred from Nassau Community College, where he was an All-American and Jez is hoping for him to break in right away. Freshman Connor Mackay (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) will be a strong backup and should see time this season.

Offensive Midfield

Junior Eddie Plompen The attack unit should be stronger than ever with the return of every starting attacker from last season. Sophomore Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.) is the experienced scoring leader after breaking out last season with a team-leading 45 goals. He will lead an offensive unit that returns seven attackers who scored 113 of the team’s 231 goals last season. “Eddie is a great inside shooter and is very hard working,” says Jez. “He should continue his scoring success from last year.” Senior Nick Coric (Walnut Creek, Calif.) is regarded as the quarterback of the offense as he dished out a team-high 27 assists last season. His quickness and knowledge of the C.W. Post system will be valuable for the Pioneer’s offense in 2011. Says Jez, “Nick has improved in every season since his freshman year and will look to take the reins on offense and have a phenomenal senior year.” Sophomore Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) earned well deserved praise last season after stepping up and scoring nine goals on 12 attempts with

Senior Mike Messina The midfield remains solid with senior AllAmerican Mike Messina (Sayville, N.Y.) returning along with senior Jimmy Johnston (Farmingville, N.Y.) and junior Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.). Messina is fast and athletic and is one of the top midfielders in the country. His ability to transition the ball up the field will be a key to the Pioneers’ offense. Messina has worked on his fitness and shooting in the off-season and is ready to finish his career with the Pioneers on top. Johnston had a productive junior season and looks to continue his success into his final year. He is extremely fast and is one of the more accurate shooters on the team. Rodriguez is a do-it-all midfielder. He is ex-

2011 season outlook

In his fifth season as head coach of the C.W. Post men’s lacrosse team, John Jez has elevated the Pioneers into one of the top tier programs in the country and one of the most exciting teams to watch in lacrosse. The Pioneers have posted a 31-2 overall record and have won back- to-back national titles over the last two seasons. Picked first in the 2011 Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine preseason polls, the Pioneers are setting their sights on another championship run. “Our focus is to qualify for the playoffs,” remarks Jez. “We have strong leadership and are looking to continue building the foundation of a championship-caliber program.”

2011 season outlook

2011 men’s lacrosse tremely quick and possesses an accurate shot. Expect him to be a driving force in the success of the Pioneers in 2011. Junior Brad DeSouza (Trumbull, Conn.) is hard working and possesses a hard shot and should see significant playing time this year. Desouza should be a huge asset to the Pioneers’ manup unit. Sophomore Matt Riccio (Trumbull, Conn.) can play both midfield and attack and Jez is hoping for him to break out this season. Riccio has great quickness and great energy. Jason Cranmer (Hicksville, N.Y.), a transfer from Nassau, is a top-rated athlete who is a relentless player. Cranmer should break into the line-up and will be a force for the Pioneer offense.

Face-Off

Senior Ronnie Irving The graduation of Mike Cama ’10 leaves one of the largest holes in the Pioneer lineup but senior Ronnie Irving (Glen Head, N.Y.) looks to have taken this loss major step in replacing. Irving saw action in eight games last season and won nine of his 20 face-offs. Juniors James Kozlakowski (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Jason Cranmer have both been working hard on face-offs. Kozlakowski saw limited time last season but knows the demands of the job. Cranmer was an All-American at Nassau and is looking to have a great season.

Short Stick Midfield

The defensive midfield is another area in which the Pioneers remain strong and experienced. The tandem of senior John Wood (Marblehead, Mass.) and junior Wade Ungar (Middle Island, N.Y.) have been shutting down opponents together the last two years. One of the most hard working and athletic players on the team, Wood was fourth on the team

Junior Wade Ungar in caused turnovers last season with 19 and contributed offensively with two goals and three assists. Ungar has been a vocal leader on and off the field and brings skill to the position. He played in all 17 games last season and recorded 12 caused turnovers with 32 ground balls. Senior Nick Lacagnina (Farmingville, N.Y.) played in every game last season and tallied two goals and an assist with nine caused turnovers and 40 ground balls. Lacagnina’s aggressiveness with scooping ground balls on face-offs has made him an important role player. Irving, along with junior transfer John Aragona (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and freshman Brett Miller (Shoreham, N.Y.) will add depth where needed.

Long Stick Midfield

Senior Dan DaCosta

The Pioneers will have a big role to fill with the graduation of Joe Blount ’10. Fortunately, Blount has returned to the sidelines as a coach this season and will mentor the long sticks. Senior Dan DaCosta (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) ranked third in caused turnovers with 23 and has the experience and toughness to be a force on deNCAA 1977 • 1986 • 1993 • 1996 • 1998 • 1999 • 2000 • 2001 • 2005 • 2009 • 2010 10

Schedule

Senior Erik Boyd This year’s defensive unit can be best described as a young ,smart and focused group , and Jez is confident they will succeed. Leading the group are returning seniors Erik Boyd (Coram, N.Y.) and Sean Baum (Merrick, N.Y.). Boyd brings needed size to the position and is the leader on defense. Boyd is a returning starter, team captain and the vocal leader of the defense. Baum has worked hard and should start strong. He brings a physical presence to the game and is ready to play. Sophomore transfer Bennett Dee (Charlotte, Vt.) and freshman Stephen Burke (Yorktown, N.Y.) fill out the top tier of defenders. Dee has learned the system and will use his athleticism on the field. Burke has a good lacrosse IQ and should see significant time on the turf this year.

The Pioneers currently have three goalkeepers but senior Mike Giordano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) has the starting nod after earning the starting role midway through last season. Giordano was undefeated in goal last season with seven starts in goal. Senior Nick Foote (Trumbull, Conn.) had a

LIU/C.W. POST ADMINISTRATION

Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977. The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Under Collins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels. During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams. This past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments. C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fields have undergone improvements to their playing surface.
