Head Coach • Sixth Season • C.W. Post ‘86 Pete Timmes enters his sixth season at the helm of the Pioneers, following one of the most sucessful seasons in C.W. Post baseball history, as the Pioneers posted a 32-16-1 record, setting a new program mark for wins in a season. The Pioneers won the East Coast Conference championship title and advanced to their second NCAA Regional in three years, where they garnered their first regional victory in over 25 years, a 4-1 victory over Dominican. Two years prior, the Pioneers had just as sucessful a season, as Timmes led the 2008 squad to its first-ever East Coast Conference Championship title and first NCAA appearance since 1985, when he was an infielder on the team. In addition, six of his players were named to the 2008 ECC All-Conference team. Timmes’ 2007 team posted just the second 30-win season in school history, going 30-19, including a 17-10 mark in ECC play while advancing to the finals of the East Coast Conference Championships. In his five years as head coach, Timmes has posted 116 wins thus far and has seen numerous players named allconference and all-region. A former player and assistant coach, Timmes gained experience and knowledge while serving for 21 seasons as an assistant under legendary head coach Dick Vining. The Pioneers have experienced great success during Timmes’ involvement with the program, beginning in 1984, 11 seasons where they have registered 20 or more wins. As a member of the Diamond Conference during the early 1990’s, the Pioneers were regular season champions in 1989, 1991 and 1993 and qualified for the ECAC Regional. C.W. Post also captured a regular season title in 1998 as a member of the Mid-Continent Eastern Division. As a player at C.W. Post, Timmes helped his team to 45 wins between 1984 and 1985. His senior year, Timmes led the Pioneers to a 28-11 record and to an NCAA Division II Tournament berth in which he batted .365 and stole a record 33 bases, which still stands. In the summer of 1985, the Pioneers played six exhibition games in China. The long-time coach is also the department’s Eligibility Coordinator. In addition, Timmes has also been an instructor with the New York Baseball Academy for the past 18 years. The C.W. Post Baseball Hall of Fame inductee resides in Baldwin, N.Y.

Assistant Coach • Seventh Season • Adelphi ‘79 Bill Gaffney enters his seventh season as an assistant coach for the Pioneers. th The veteran coach has valuable experience from both the collegiate level and summer league action. From 1982-84, he was an co assistant coach for the Adelphi Panthers, helping the team to a berth as in the 1982 Northeast Regionals. He also was as a coach for the Long Island Red Sox summer league team from 1995-2003. Isl D During i hi his playing l i d days, Gaffney was selected in the 19th round of the 1979 draft and played two seasons in the Seattle Mariners organization. Gaffney and his wife, Maureen, live in Westbury, N.Y., and are the parents of three sons: Mike, who played five years in the Kansas City Royals farm system before retiring; Kevin, a graduate of LaSalle University and a law student at Hofstra Law School; and Scott, a minor-leaguer in the Cincinnati Reds organization; along with a daughter, Laura, a student at Bloomsburg University.

Hector Aristy begins his fifth season at C.W. Post, aiding in all facets of the program. fa Aristy joined the C.W. Post staff in 2007, following three years as the head coach at Old Westbury College. At Old Westbury, Aristy took over the helm of the Panthers in 2004, where he guided the team to to 21 victories that earned a bid and the No. 2 seed in the ECAC Metro Regional Tournament. During that time, the Panthers hit .300 M and were nationally ranked in three separate NCAA categories. an Prior to head coaching at Old Westbury, Aristy served as the team’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, beginning in 1995. The Panthers reached the NCAA Regional in 1997, 2000 and 2001 and led the Knickerbocker Conference in numerous offensive categories. A former player at Old Westbury from 1992-94, Aristy was a two-time captain and was twice named the Most Valuable Player. Aristy received his bachelor of arts degree from Old Westbury in Secondary Education with a concentration in Spanish. He later completed his masters degree in School Counseling at C.W. Post. With nine years of teaching experience as a school teacher, Aristy is currently teaching in the Foreign Language department at Island Trees High School. Aristy is a longtime instructor at the New York Baseball Academy. His role there includes assisting in coordination of the summer satellite and winter indoor programs, located at Old Westbury. He resides in Farmingdale, N.Y. with his wife, Erin, and daughters, Brittany, Kayleigh and Madison.

Assistant Coach • Seventh Season • C.W. Post ‘04 Jon Mauchan enters his seventh year working on the Pioneer baseball Jo sta . He works primarily with the pitchers, and for the last three seasons staff has placed a member of his staff on the ECC First Team. The 2008 team ha po posted the lowest team earned run average in recent memory, finishing the season with a team ERA of 3.80. th M Mauchan was a standout pitcher for the Pioneers during his two year te tenure with the team. He was also an All-Region selection for Suffolk Community College. Co Mauchan works as a regional sales representative for Rawlings. He is the co-owner of the Long Island Tiger Baseball Organization, as well as the Assistant General Manager/Director of Player Personnel for the Long Island Collegians of the Atlantic College Baseball League, one of eight summer leagues sanctioned by the NCAA and partially funded by MLB. In addition, he has also been involved with the New York Baseball Academy for six years. Mauchan resides in Old Bethpage, N.Y., with his wife Kati-Ann.

DICK VINING

Assistant Coach • Fifth Season • UConn ‘51 D Dick Vining, the dean of New York metropolitan collegiate baseball co coaches, enters his fourth season as a Pioneer assistant, following 28 years as the head coach of the Pioneers. ye A As head coach, Vining had more than 800 wins, with more than 500 of those coming in the dugout of the Pioneers. During the 2003 50 season, he passed two impressive milestones by not only capturing se victory number 800, but also 1,000 games as the Pioneers’ tutor. vi It was under Vining’s direction that the Pioneers captured Diamond Conference championships in ﬁve of their last seven seasons in the conference. Vining holds the distinction of being the ﬁrst collegiate baseball coach in New York State to reach the 600-win plateau, with C.W. Post enjoying 15 winning seasons under Vining’s tutelage. Vining has made sure the memorable players from Pioneer baseball are remembered by having established the C.W. Post Baseball Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Virginia, reside in Douglaston, N.Y.

Post baseball team had a season for the record books in 2010, as the Pioneer posted 32 wins - the most in school history - won an ECC Championship, and advanced to the NCAA East Regional, where they won a contest for the ﬁrst time in over 25 years, knocking out Dominican with a 4-1 victory. But graduation took nine seniors - including six four-year starters - leaving the Pioneers with a very young, but extremely talented squad with enormous potential. The team’s success will be determined by how quickly several younger players can step up at make an impact at the collegiate level.

Pitching Despite the loss of three seniors who were the anchor of last year’s pitching staﬀ, there is returning talent combined with solid newcomers that should make the Pioneer pitching staﬀ a strength yet again. Sophomore Bo Budkevics (Deer Park, N.Y.) makes his return to green and gold after spending last year at Nassau CC. A mature pitching who gained good experience throwing in the junior college world series last season at Nassau, Budkevics is a hard throwing righty who will be a topnotch starter. Glen Hudson Following a strong freshman season on the mound, Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) will be counted on for the same performance this season. A consistent and reliable arm, Chenicek’s strengths are control and location, and he will provide the Pioneers with strong starts. Junior Glen Hudson (West Sayville, N.Y.) has been slowed by injuries over the past two seasons, but came through with a key start at the end of last season, giving a glimpse of his potential if he can stay injury free. Hudson’s pinpoint location and assortment of breaking pitches are two of the lefty’s strengths.

Junior transfer James Stone (Massapequa, N.Y.) is coming off an injury, but had an outstanding summer in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, earning ACBL All-Star honors. As Stone works back into game shape, he could potentially be used in both a starting and relief capacity. Another Nassau CC product who went to the JUCO World Series last season is transfer Paul Bischoff (Levittown, N.Y.). Bischoff has an outstanding knuckle drop and has the ability to keep batters off balance. Sophomore Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) transfers from Concordia, and the hard throwing righthander will see starts for the Pioneers this season as he has good movement and a team-first attitude. Freshman Mike Eckerle (Hewlett, N.Y.) could see some spot starts as well as come out of the bullpen, as Timmes will look to utilize Eckerle’s size and raw ability as the freshman continues to develop throughout the season. Connor McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) is another tall and athletic pitcher with an explosive fastball who could be utilized in a variety of situations for the Pioneers. Sophomores Ryan O’Kelly (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Josh Laufer (East Northport, N.Y.) will join freshman P.J. Jennings (Morristown, N.J.) as three pitchers with potential to see time as starters or in relief. O’Kelly has an unorthodox delivery that adds to his effectiveness, while Laufer is a hard-throwing righty who missed last year due to injury, but with a clean bill of health, could make an impact this season. Jennings is an athletic player with a good running fastball who will also see time in the field when not on the mound. Outfield Junior transfer Steve Smith (West Islip, N.Y.) will play center field, as the lefty runs well and tracks the ball off the bat well. A contact hitter, he will look to get on base and take advantage of his speed on the basepaths. Simone, when not catching, can play any of the three outfield positions, and his hitting will keep him in the lineup. Sophomore David Saldana (Deer Park, N.Y.) is one of the fastest players on the team, and will be utilized as a defensive replacement or a pinch runner while he continues to push for starting time with his solid swing. Another sophomore, Dan Burnett (Farmingdale, N.Y.) will provide depth and push for time with an aggressive approach at the plate. Jennings is also an option in right field, joined by fellow freshman Ryan Sloane (Westbury, N.Y.) who has good tools and will get a shot for starting time in one of the corner outfield slots. Freshman Anthony Imparato (Bethpage, N.Y.) will provide depth in the outfield. C.W. Post has arguably one of the toughest earlyseason shedules in the region, as they take on Franklin Pierce and Southern Connecticut (pre-season ranked

(Glen Cove, N.Y.) will battle it out for the starting stop. Tolan reads the ball well off the bat, and is a strong and athletic player. Maccarone has good arm strength and is adjusting to balls batted off wood bats. Both players swing the bat aggressively and run well. At the hot corner, Chenicek will resume his starting role when not on the mound. Returning this year with improved defensive confidence, he will look to improve his offensive production and elevate his power numbers while maintaining his solid defense. Junior Nick Compito (Syosset, N.Y.) will play third when Chenicek is on the mound, and will be the primary DH, taking advantage of his solid swing and good power potential. Graduate Joe Mare (Whitestone, N.Y.) is a wild card in the infield, as he makes his return to the field this year following a three-year rehabilitation from a car accident suffered in 2008. Mare was an honorable mention All-American in 2007, and will continue to work back into baseball shape while providing leadership to the young infield. Freshmen Connor Coman (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Chris Brudie (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) will provide depth in the infield during their rookie seasons.

2011 baseball In July of 2006 the conference formerly known as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference adopted a new name, the East Coast Conference (ECC), and branding, reﬂective of the growth the league experienced since debuting in 1988. The conference was formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic competition among member institutions and to assist them in integrating their athletics into their academic program in a ﬁscally sound way. DAVID STEINBERG - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977. The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His ﬁrst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

PAUL H. FORESTELL - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and buildings and grounds. His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

Bryan Collins, Director of Athletics Bryan Collins is in his ﬁfth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels. During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams. This past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments.

Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the efforts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service. Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual studentathlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. The department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fields have undergone improvements to their playing surface. The Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff. A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987. Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (15) and daughter, Megan (10).

C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
