MEGHAN McNAMARA Head Coach • Fourth Season • Maryland ‘01

head coach MEGHAN McNAMARA

Meghan McNamara returns to the field for her fourth season as the Pioneers’ head coach. Last year, she guided C.W. Post to a 16-2 overall record, and the program’s fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship tournament. McNamara’s 2010 squad boasted numerous accolades, including five IWLCA All-Americans, the East Coast Conference Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year and a second place ranking in the final IWLCA poll of the season. Ten players were named to the East Coast Conference All-Conference roster, and McNamara was awarded ECC Coach of the Year by her peers. Her 2010 squad fell short to Adelphi in the NCAA semifinals, however, McNamara’s team handed the Panthers their only loss of the season with a 21-16 win in the teams’ regular season matchup. The women’s lacrosse team also takes its cue from McNamara off the field, as the team won the IWLCA Team Community Awareness award for their active participation in community service throughout the entire year. In 2009, McNamara guided the Pioneers to a fourth straight NCAA appearance, complete with a 16-3 record and a second playce ranking in the IWLCA final poll of the season. She mentored four All-Americans including two IWLCA players of the year, as well as nine All-Conference honorees. McNamara led the Pioneers to a successful 2008 season, which included their third straight NCAA appearance and second appearance in the title game, posting an overall record of 17-2 for the season. Five players were named All-American while nine were named ECC All-Conference. A native of East Northport, N.Y., McNamara was an assistant coach at C.W. Post for two seasons (2006-07), where she helped the Pioneers to a 33-2 record. Her coaching helped the team to a perfect 17-0 record in 2007, enroute to the program’s second NCAA Division II national championship. Prior to coming to C.W. Post, McNamara spent four seasons as assistant coach at nearby Stony Brook University. She was actively involved in recruiting for the Seawolves program, and was instrumental in developing individual workouts and offensive game strategies. McNamara was the assistant director of Stony Brook Lacrosse Camps and Clinics during her stay at the school, and spent the final four months of the 2005 calendar year as the program’s interim head coach. She is a 2001 graduate of the University of Maryland, where she helped the Terrapins to a combined record of 83-4 and four national championships during her playing career. A member of the 2001 ACC All-Tournament Team, she registered 71 points (51 g, 20 a) in a Maryland uniform. McNamara is currently entering her fourth season as assistant coach of the Irish National Team alongside Dan Leidl, who served as assistant coach at C.W. Post in 2005. She represented Ireland along with several Pioneer alumni in the European Lacrosse Championships held in Finland in August 2008. She also helped the Irish to a fifth place finish in the 2009 World Cup held in Prague.

C.W. POST PIONEERS 2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2011 C.W. Post women’s lacrosse team knows the challenges ahead of them. Ranked second in the IWLCA preseason poll and picked first in the East Coast Conference preseason poll, expectations are high for the Pioneers. With five straight NCAA final four appearances under their belts, the team is a strong blend of veteran players hungry for a national championship. With an infusion of new talent, fourth year head coach Meghan McNamara anticipates a very energetic and hardworking team. C.W. Post is deep at all positions and McNamara has a number of options.

ed to be a playmaker this season. McNamara will have plenty of experienced players providing depth to the attack. Senior Taryn Crimi (West Islip, N.Y.) is a lefty feeder who has great moves

Attack Offensively, standout performer Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.), proven attacker Michelle Fucich (Seaford, N.Y.) and sophomore Abigail Ross (Rocky Point, N.Y.) will be joined by promising freshman Jaclyn Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.), who will be the primary feeder, replacing four-year starter and All-American; Staci Passafiume.

Junior Ashley Olen Olen, one of the Pioneer tri-captains and returning All-American attacker, will be the primary offensive target for C.W. Post this season. Last year’s leading scorer, Olen looks to improve on an already impressive career. She is a tall player with great wing span and size which will be vital when gaining possession on the draw. A hungry attacker, she always wants the ball, but is also always looking to create opportunities for her teammates. She is a powerful attacker with great stick work, a great shoot and standout moves. Fucich is an experienced attacker who can both score and find the open player. Although one of the smaller players on the field, her quickness and great field vision make her a threat to opposing defenses. Ross has one of the most accurate shots on the team, and she’s also an excellent cutter who reads the game well. A primary candidate to take the draw controls for the Pioneers, the tall and powerful sophomore looks to build on last season’s ECC Rookie of the Year honors. With a year under her belt, the coaching staff looks for big things from Ross. Jaclyn Sileo replaces Passafiume behind the net as the primary feeder. McNamara anticipates that the freshman will not miss a beat in her transition to the college game. She has great vision, is an excellent feeder, and is expect-

Senior Michelle Fucich from behind the net and she is an excellent player on the re-defend. Her hustling presence and experience will make her a key component on offense for the Pioneers. Juniors Nicole Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Janine Abramo (Plainview, N.Y.) will also look to make big contributions to the attack, as Nicole Sileo will join her younger sister on offense after playing defense for the Pioneers for the previous two seasons. Sileo will be a big offensive threat with her knowledge of breaking down the defense and executing on the openings that are created. She is a very instinctive player and McNamara anticipates an offensive sister duo as the Sileo sisters will team up to score goals. Abramo is a wild card player who has been plagued by injuries. Finally healthy, the team will benefit from her great speed and quick lefty shot. Junior transfer Alanna Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), returning sophomores Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.) and BriAnn DeLutri (North Masssapequa, N.Y.) and freshmen Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.), Toniann Riportella (West Islip, N.Y.) and Alexis Koch (Laury’s Station, Pa.) will also look for time on offense. Gagliano returns to lacrosse after two years away from the sport but is picking up the game nicely. She is a very energetic player and doesn’t stop moving, making her a challenge to defend. Chiarenza has great instincts for the goal as well as on the re-defend and McNamara will look for big contributions from the sophomore this season. DeLutri has great footwork and moves very well around the cage. She is coming off a good fall where she showed a lot of confidence and the coaching staff expects her to add a new element to the offense this spring. Dragon has a fiesty offensive goal-to-goal attitude, and her speed will be a great asset to the transition game. Riportella is an aggressive and athletic player who is excellent at picking up ground balls, and Koch is an athletic freshman with a willingness to learn and has a good shot. Both will look for playing time during their first seasons in green and gold.

C.W. POST PIONEERS 2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Junior Lauren Spagnoletta from. Rotan is a consistent player on both sides of the field and McNamara describes her as a very smart player. She is a good help defender, and offensively she is a strong cutter. Losco is a hardworking player whose competitive nature will help her transition to the college game. She has excellent speed and is very good in transition, and McNamara describes her as a “ground ball machine”. Sophomores Megan Noone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Chelsea Caiazza (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) will also see time at midfield this season. Noone moves to midfield this season and the coaching staff hopes to use her excellent endurance and speed. She has good technical skills and field vision and though a predominately right-handed player, she has a great lefty shot. Caiazza is a standout player on draw controls and will be a good addition between the 30’s for the Pioneers. A strong and athletic player, Caiazza is a hard working hustler who will be a gritty presence in the midfield. Providing depth at midfield will be first-year players Candice Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) and Renee Schwartz

(Lockport, N.Y.). Noakes is very fast and great in transition and her height will make her a great target player on offense. Schwartz is an energetic and aggressive player

Junior Nan Mayott and McNamara notes that she gives 100 percent every time she steps on the field. Both players will look to provide a spark off the bench to the midfield.

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK

Midfield The Pioneers have three returners at the midfield in juniors Lauren Spagnoletta (West Islip, N.Y.), Ashley Janelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Nan Mayott (Islip, N.Y.). Spagnoletta is a speedy midfielder who plays both ends of the field very well. Offensively, her quickness and fearless attitude makes her a big threat; while on defense, she is a very instinctive player. An IWLCA AllRegion second team selection last season, Spagnoletta will play an even more vital role for the Pioneers this season because of her experience. Janelli is one of the most consistent players on the team. She brings a great deal of experience and poise on both the offensive and defensive ends. She is one of the best one-on-one defenders on the squad and she is also a strong attacker with a good shot. Mayott is a speedster with standout stick skills and a great shot. A versatile player, she has worked hard to improve her defense. The coaching staff is eagerly anticipating a standout year from the junior. Kathleen Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) and Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) are two incoming freshmen that McNamara will look for immediate contributions

Defense The Pioneers also return a strong defensive group with four veteran players back in juniors Chelsea Donaldson (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Brie-Claire Drost (Wading River, N.Y.), and Ashley Babst (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and senior Jaclyn Coyne (Levittown, N.Y.). Donaldson is one of two returning All-Americans for the Pioneers and she is a standout defender who is feisty and aggressive. An outstanding competitor and leader on the defense, she is often charged with marking the other team’s top scorer. The coaching staff notes her energy and relentless attitude to clear the ball out of the defensive end as two strong points. Drost is a consistent and strong defender who returns for her third season as a starter. Her veteran presence is combined with a very poised and positive attitude, which makes her a great blend with the defensive unit.

Junior Chelsea Donaldson Babst saw several key starts last season and returns for her junior year even stronger due to a very productive off-season. She is physically the strongest defender

on the team and a good crease defender. Already with a height advantage, adding strength has made Babst an even better help defender down low. Coyne, a tri-captain, returns for her final season in green and gold. A strong and physical defender, McNamara describes her as a very inspiring player to coach and play with, and calls her “the glue that keeps the defense together.” Newcomer Aimee Capps (Rocky Point, N.Y.) is a very vocal defender who adds an immediate burst of energy to the defense. Capps understands the game very well and her slides are right on, which McNamara expects will add a new dimension to an already strong defense.

Sophomore Dominique Mosca her ability to be active outside the crease makes her a strong player between the pipes,. Freshman Kathleen Hannan (Gansevoort, N.Y.) will look to gain experience during her freshman season, and has great potential in the cage, with a good build and good size.

Senior Jaclyn Coyne Sophomore Bridgett Soares (Yuma, Calif.) and freshmen Melissa Rohr (Plainview, N.Y.), Alexandra Gentile (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and Jennifer Rooney (Hicksville, N.Y.) will all add depth to the defense while pushing for playing time. Soares continues to progress with her lacrosse game, and she is very coachable and quick to learn. Small but fierce, according to McNamara, she is a force to be reckoned with and she adds excitement and tenacity to the team. Gentile is a very smart player who continues to improve every day. She will benefit from the veteran players’ knowledge and experience while continuing her development. Rohr is a hard working player who has good understanding of the game, and is very strong around the crease. She is a confident player with great vocal energy. Rooney has good height which McNamara hopes to take advantage of versus taller opponents. Also, Rooney is a strong one-on-one defender. Goalkeeper Sophomore Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) had a standout rookie season after assuming the starting position midway through the year, posting a 9-2 record and earning ECC Goalkeeper of the Year honors. She has quick hands, good game knowledge and brings a lot of energy and confidence to the defense. Mosca is also a very strong communicator between the pipes. Backing her up in cage is senior Sam Powers (Mattituck, N.Y.), a veteran goalkeeper who is very vocal and instructive in the cage. Her great vision on clears and

C.W. POST PIONEERS 2011 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Administration

The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service. Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. The department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fields have undergone improvements to their playing surface. The Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff. A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship.
