2010-11SWIMMING Media Guide 7

head coach MAUREEN TRAVERS

Maureen Travers begins her ninth season as head coach of the C.W. Post women’s swimming program. She was chosen to head the fledgling program during the spring of 2002, and she also serves as aquatics director for C.W. Post’s Pratt Recreation Center. Five new school records were set during the 2009-10 season, including two individual and three relays. The Travers’ led squad also went 5-4 during dual meets. While at the Metropolitan Championships, the Pioneers took home a fifth place finish out of the 20 teams that competed. C.W. Post was also the only Division II school to be competing at the ECAC Championships, as the rest of the field was made up of Division I schools. The Pioneers entered the NCAA Championships ranked 23rd in the nation, where Riley Cassidy earned Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 Butterfly. Cornelia Hanes, Brittany Roman-Green, Sandra Kirstein and Riley Cassidy also teamed up to earn Honorable Mention All-American in the 200 Free Relay. These four ladies also earned Scholar-Athlete Awards after meeting the qualifications of a 3.5 GPA and competing at the NCAAs. The team’s 3.58 GPA earned them the second-highest overall GPA in Division II and eighth-highest of all three divisions. The 2008-09 season was a time of individual success for Travers’ squad, as eight new records were set throughout the season. The Pioneers posted a 4-6 record in dual meets, taking home a fourth place finish at the Metropolitan Championships. Six team members qualified to compete at the Division II NCAA Championships, combining for an overall 20th place finish. Mariel Andersson led the squad, earning All-America honors as she placed seventh in the 200-yard backstroke. Brittany Roman-Green made a strong showing for C.W. Post, receiving Honorable Mention All-America in the same event. The Pioneers showed their strengths in the classroom as well, earning Team All-America honors for the highest collective GPA in Division II, and turning out four Scholar All-Americans and one Scholar Honorable Mention. The 2007-08 season saw the Pioneers finish 8-3 in dual meets, and finish 17th for a second straight year at the Division II NCAA Championships. The Pioneers competed in 13 events at NCAA’s and placed in the top 10 in three events. In addition, the team garnered a 16th place finish at the ECAC Championships, and a fourth place showing at the Metropolitan Conference Championships. The 2006-07 season was one of the most successful as the Pioneers put together a 12-4 dual meet record and achieved success on the national level. C.W. Post placed third at the Metropolitan Conference Championships, and had five individuals and four relay teams qualify for Nationals, where the team placed 17th. Under Travers’ tutelage, Jenn Esposito and Mariel Andersson were named AllAmericans while five others received Honorable Mention. Travers was named the Metropolitan Swimming Conference 2007 Women’s Coach of the Year. She is the Division II women’s representative for the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. During the 2004-05 campaign, the C.W. Post swimming team posted a 6-3 dual-meet mark, earned a fifth-place finish at the Metropolitan Championships, and placed 11th at the ECAC Championships. Prior to her appointment at C.W. Post, Travers was head coach for five years with the men’s and women’s swimming team and women’s water polo squad at Whittier (Calif.). Her tenure was marked by 25 new school records in swimming and included a men’s conference champion in the 200-yard butterfly and a women’s national qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke. Five members of her women’s water polo team garnered All-America kudos. Travers’s coaching resume also includes a stint as assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1991-95), head coach of the Harvard women’s water polo squad (1993-97), and head coach of the women’s swimming team at Simmons College from 1995-97. In August 1990, Travers added an impressive accomplishment to her swimming resume, as she swam across the English Channel. The Levittown, N.Y. resident graduated from Queens College in 1987 with a degree in physical education before earning a master’s degree in exercise & sports studies from Smith College in Northampton, Mass. She was team Most Valuable Player for Queens in 1984 and 1985 in swimming, and also won team MVP accolades while competing for the men’s water polo team in 1987.

ASSIStant COACHES

Mike Travers, brother of head coach Maureen Travers, is now in his ninth season as an assistant for the C.W. Post women’s swimming program, possessing a wealth of competitive swimming experience. During the past several years, Travers has taken over the sprints group and met with tremendous success. The Pioneer sprint program has produced several conference champions (2007, 2008, 2009) and numerous NCAA qualifiers and top 8 finishers. Travers competed for Division-I La Salle, and was a multi-year qualifier for Senior Nationals,

where he swam and trained with some of the best athletes and coaches in the United States. Swimming with coach Jack Nelson at Ft. C.W. POST PIONEERS 2010-11 Swimming after transferring from Brenau University in Georgia. While at Brenau, she was a qualifier for the NAIA National Championships. For Post, Morrison will see time in the sprint Freestyle and Butterfly events and she will be looking to earn spots on several of the relay teams. Four freshmen also come into this season looking to make their marks. Tamara Garriock (Duncan, Canada),a fast swimmer out of Western Canada, comes to the Pioneers with a USA Swimming Short Course NCAA National qualifying time in the 200 IM. She will have the opportunity to compete among our nation’s best at that meet this December. Garriock’s speed in multiple events will give the Pioneers the chance to vary their dual meet line-ups to a greater degree than ever before. Alongside Garriock, also handling the IM events is Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.). Hew, while strong in the breaststroke and IM events, will also contribute in the distance freestyle. A strong swimmer with tremendous aerobic capacity Hew will be a tough competitor throughout the season and will also be a strong contender for some relay spots. Mathilde Hyddmark (Lund, Sweden) brings a strong mid-distance swimming background to this year’s team. Hyddmark swims an unusual combination of Backstroke and Butterfly and this versatility, along with her strong Freestyle makes her a threat in multiple events. The final newcomer, and another all-around swimmer is Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden). A true IMer with great technique in all four strokes, Luiga is probably the most well-rounded swimmer on the team. She can compete in myriad events and will sure to be another top contender throughout the year. Travers is once again joined by her brother, Michael, for their ninth season with the Pioneers . They also welcome first year assistant Stephanie Palmeri to the staff. A 2009 graduate of C.W. Post, Palmeri still holds spots in the Pioneer Top Five Times. In 2009 Palmeri participated in the NCAA Championships as part of the 400 Medley Relay and was an NCAA qualifier in the 1650 Freestyle. The Pioneers open the season on Oct. 16 at the Millersville Relay Carnival and host their first home meet on November 3 at the Pratt Recreation Center against the Queens College Knights.

2010-11 season preview

The swimming team is looking to make the upcoming year a special one. This season’s squad, a more versatile group than in years past, has already demonstrated their tremendous potential. The C.W. Post coaches plan again, to have strong representation at the NCAA Championships at Palo Alto, Texas in March. The lone senior on the team comes into the year with high expectations. Last season, Riley Cassidy (Cambridge, Ontario) set records in the 100 Butterfly (56.14), the 400 Medley Relay, the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. She was conference champion in the 200 Fly and had NCAA qualifying times in the 100 Fly, 200 Fly, and the 200 IM. For the past two seasons, Cassidy was named Honorable Mention All-American in various events. The squad also sees the return of three sophomores. Kristina Fritsch (Brooklyn, N.Y.) will be the team leader in the mid-distance freestyle events. An ECAC qualifier in multiple events, and swimming a personal best 1:56.80 in the 200 Freestyle last year, Fritsch plans on having even greater impact throughout this season. Cornelia Hanes (Stockholm, Sweden) comes off a strong freshman campaign where she was named an All-American Honorable Mention with her performance at the NCAA Championships in March. 11. Her Metropolitan Conference Championship Riley cassidy win in the 50 Freestyle was also a qualifying time for the NCAA Championships. Additional Conference wins in the 200 Medley and Freestyle Relays also proved to be qualifying swims for the NCAA meet. Hanes hopes to continue her dominance in the sprint freestyle events as well as make her mark in the 100 Fly. Sandra Kirstein (Hollviken, Sweden) is the final returner from last year’s squad where Kirstein was part of the Conference Champions 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays that set school records last year and qualified for the NCAA meet. A Freestyle and Backstroke specialist, Kirstein expects to qualify for this year’s National meet in both individual and relay events. The swim team welcomes in a group of newcomers that seek to make immediate impact. Mairi Morrison (Carnock, United Kingdom) comes to the Pioneer squad

David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.

Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and buildings and grounds. His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

Administration

The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.

An evaluation is any off-campus activity designed to assess the academic qualifications or athletics ability of a prospect, including any visit to a prospect’s educational institution or the observation of any practice or competition at any site at which the prospect participates.

Telephone Calls

Institutional staff members may make telephone calls to a prospective student-athlete as of June 15 following the prospect’s junior year.

Official Visits

An official visit to a member institution by a PSA is a visit financed in whole or in part by the member institution. A prospect may not make more than 5 official visits to NCAA member institutions, with no more than one to a single institution, regardless of the number of sports in which the prospect is involved. A prospect must provide the institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT or an ACT test taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions and must have registered with the clearinghouse. The official visit may not exceed 48 hours. A prospect may not make an official visit prior to the opening day of classes of the prospect’s senior year.
