GUE was decided between CSU and the Flames. After getting out to a sluggish start and dropping the first set, the Vikings stormed back and swept the next three sets to claim a 3-1 victory over UIC, capturing the program’s second Horizon League tournament title.

With the 2012 Horizon League title, Cleveland State earned its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history. The Vikings, along with Arkansas and Wichita State, were sent to 20th-ranked Kansas for the First and Second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. As the No. 4 team at the Kansas site, CSU faced the host Jayhawks in the opening round - just the second all-time meeting between the two teams. The Vikings got out to a dominating start, earning a 25-17 victory over Kansas in the first set, marking the first-ever set win for the Vikings in NCAA Tournament play. The Jayhawks responded with a controlling 25-10 win in set two and then cruised to 25-16 and 25-18 victories in the third and fourth sets, respectively. Despite a strong

performance against a top-ranked team in Kansas and a stellar year, the Vikings’ 2012 season came to an end with a first round loss in the NCAA Tournament. Throughout the season the Vikings were honored with multiple accolades, including a pair of AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions in seniors Kara Koch and Marie Frease. Prior to earning All-America honors, Koch and Frease were named AVCA Midwest All-Region. Koch was also named the Horizon League Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team, while Frease and classmate Amanda Medvetz joined her on the First Team. Redshirt freshman Dayna Roberts earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team and Chuck Voss was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year.
