WOMEN’S SOCCER Under the direction of firstyear head coach Dallas Boyer, Cleveland State enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history. The Vikings went 9-9-1 overall, tying for the second most wins in school history, and posted a 5-4 mark in Horizon League play to advance to the League tournament for the first time since 2015. The Vikings played eventual League champion IUPUI to a 1-1 draw in the first round before falling in penalty kicks. CSU’s 28 goals this year were tied for the most in a season in school history, while the Vikings set a single season record with 224 shots. The Vikings had four players reach double-digits in points for the first time in program history and were led by freshman Jenna Prathapa’s 15 points on six goals and three assists.

Junior McKenna Vento had 13 points (4G, 5A), while junior Dani Sowinski finished with 12 points (5G, 2A) and freshman Grace Grant had 10 with four goals and two assists. MEN’S SOCCER Under the direction of firstyear head coach Kirk Harwat, Cleveland State advanced to the Horizon League semifinals before falling to the eventual Tournament champion. It was CSU’s sixth trip to the semifinals under the current tournament format, the most among all HL schools. The Vikings advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a comprehensive, 4-0, victory at Wright State in their opening postseason match. Cleveland State prepared for League play by facing one of the toughest non-conference schedules nationally as its non-conference strength of schedule ranked 15th at the end of the regular season. The Vikings took down Patriot League regular-season champion, Loyola (Md.), and only lost to Elite Eight participant Michigan State, 1-0, in a tightly contested match.

Cleveland State saw its RPI improve 51 places from the season prior even though it showcased youth at a couple of key positions. CSU started two newcomers at central defense in 13 of the team’s 19 matches, and the Vikings had three true freshmen starting on their back line in their HL Tournament contest. Junior Noah Pio tied for the team lead in goals (5) and led the squad in assists (5) en route to AllLeague honors. Sophomore Vlad Jandric scored five goals in eight starts in an advanced midfield role to earn All-League honors while senior Alec Nagucki was named All-League for the second straight season. VOLLEYBALL For the third straight season the Cleveland State volleyball team finished the year at the top of the Horizon League, as the Vikings captured their fifth #HLVB Regular Season & Tournament titles. Cleveland State finished the year with a 22-8 overall record, posting the 17th 20-win campaign in program history. The Vikings were led by the senior class of Alexis Middlebrooks, Shannon Grega, Gina Kilner, and Katie Mihalik, who graduated as three-time #HLVB champions, and finished their careers as the most decorated class in program history with 80+ wins and 17 individual honors. Throughout the season multiple milestones and career records were achieved, including; Alexis Middlebrooks surpassing 1,000 career kills, Gina Kilner reaching the 4,000-assist mark and Emily DeGeorge setting a freshman class record with 325 digs, while Alexis Middlebrooks (hitting percentage, block assists, solo blocks, total blocks), Gina Kilner (assists, sets played) and Shannon Grega (digs, sets played) finished their careers

ranked in the top-10 in the CSU Career Record Book. For the 18th season, the Vikings were under the direction of head coach Chuck Voss, who was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. As the all-time winningest coach, Voss led the Vikings to their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance during 2017, while he finished the campaign with 337 career wins. With the 2017 #HLVB Tournament title, the Vikings became the second team in league history to claim three straight championships, and the first to do so since the 1994 season. Postseason Honors: Emily DeGeorge (HL All-Freshman Team), Shannon Grega (HL Defensive Player of the Year; First Team), Trinniti Hall (#HLVB Tournament Team), Gina Kilner (HL Setter of the Year; First Team; AVCA All-Region; #HLVB Tournament Team), Alexis Middlebrooks (HL First Team); Sara Skeens (HL Honorable Mention; #HLVB Tournament MVP); Chuck Voss (HL Coach of the Year).


CROSS COUNTRY The Cleveland State cross country team posted one of its best seasons in program history during 2017, including a pair of team titles and a fourth place finish at the Horizon League Championship. Throughout the season the Vikings were paced by the trio of Anna Brandt, Karen (Barrientos) Kosik and Jessica Finley, who finished the year with a combined 31 top-50 5K and 6K times in the CSU Record Book. For the first time in program history the Vikings captured a pair of team titles during the year, as Cleveland State won the Lock Haven Invitational and Jenna Strong Fall Classic. Overall, the Vikings recorded five topfive team finishes, and 15 top-10 individual finishes. This success continued at the Horizon League Championship, as the Vikings tied their best result with a fourth place finish as a team, while Anna Brandt became the first Viking all-time

to earn Frehsman of the Year accolades on the cross country course, leading the Vikings with a seventh place individual finish. Karen (Barrientos) Kosik finished her career at the top of the CSU Record Book - owning program records on the 5K (17:59) and 6K (22:10) courses. Kosik’s personal-best 5K time marked the first sub 18-minute 5K time in program history, while it also allowed her to win the individual title at the Jenna Strong Fall Classic. After leading the Vikings for the last 13 seasons, head coach Joe Jaketic retired following the 2017 campaign. During his tenure, Jaketic systematically built Cleveland State into a Horizon League contender and led the Vikings to success on and off the course. MEN’S & WOMEN’S FENCING Prior to the season, the program welcomed familiar face Andy Tulleners back into the head coach role. Freshman Ahmad Taqi’s first tournament as a collegian proved highly successful as he won the foil discipline at CSU’s Fall Open to begin the campaign. Taqi picked up 10 wins without being defeated en route to the victory. Fellow freshman Declan Forth finished second in the saber competition after claiming nine wins in the event. In its first team event of the season, the CSU men went 4-2 with wins over Michigan State, Bowling Green, Iowa and Xavier. The CSU women posted a 3-3 record with wins over Bowling Green, Iowa and Xavier. Forth added another top-five individual finish as he began the new year by placing fifth as CSU

hosted its ninth annual John Szent-Kiraly Open. Forth went on to place seventh in the men’s saber competition at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Senior Sarah Mok was CSU’s highest female finisher at the event, taking ninth in the foil event. Forth and Mok along with freshman Emma Hartlaub all qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in March. Cleveland State served as the host of the event for the third time this century in 2018, as CSU welcomed the top-ranked team in the country on both the men’s and women’s sides to Woodling Gymnasium. Postseason Honors: Declan Forth (Midwest Fencing Second Team-Saber); Sarah Mok (Midwest Fencing Honorable Mention-Foil).


MEN’S SWIM & DIVE With Cleveland State hosting the Horizon League Championships for the first time in four years, the Vikings finished second with 665.5 points. It was CSU’s highest point total since 2013 while the race for first was the closest in the League in the past five years. Cleveland State surpassed NCAA qualifying standards in eight different events at the League meet. Junior Jared Stergar and freshman Dominik Niedzialek both surpassed NCAA standards in multiple events, with Niedzialek breaking the school record in the 200 backstroke (1:44.98). Junior Jason van der Touw and sophomores DJ Arslanian and Tyler Stevenson both surpassed NCAA marks as well. Despite being seeded fourth entering the event, CSU’s 800 freestyle relay team won the League title and broke the school

record in the process. Van der Touw, junior Erwan Mahoudo, Niedzialek and junior Sean Mulvin combined to finish in 6:32.96 with Mulvin furiously rallying CSU to the win. Freshman Matt Akers led CSU on the diving boards, qualifying and competing in the NCAA Zone C Championships at Ohio State. Akers was the runner-up in the 1-meter event at the HL Championships. Cleveland State won the Magnus Cup for the fourth consecutive year with its 328-point margin of victory being the largest in the history of the event. CSU went 6-1 in dual action against Horizon League opponents and also led the League with seven Academic All-League selections. Postseason Honors: HL Champions 800 Freestyle Relay (van der Touw, Mahoudo, Niedzialek, Mulvin).




WOMEN’S SWIM & DIVE With Cleveland State hosting the Horizon League Championships for the first time in four years, the Vikings finished in third place with 586 points, only seven spots out of second place. Paul Graham was named Coach of the Year after helping the Vikings to a four-position improvement at the League meet in the past two years and their highest point total in five years. Molly McNamara had an outstanding junior season and became just the second Viking ever to earn the League’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year honor. McNamara won two individual titles at the League Championships, both in NCAA qualifying times. She broke the League record in the 200 butterfly (1:57.69) while becoming the first Viking woman to win that event more than once. McNamara broke school records in all three of her individual events (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM) and be-

came just the third woman this century to sweep the butterfly titles at a HL Championship. McNamara’s assault on the record book was part of a larger team effort as CSU broke school records in nine of 18 swimming events at the League meet. Senior Jamie VanDewerker (100 back), junior Cassandra Oltman (200 back) and freshman Lexie Kostelnik (1650 free) all held school records at the end of the HL meet. Despite being in fourth place at the halfway point, senior Tobie Zeller rallied to win the 100 breaststroke, her first HL title coming while racing her signature event for the final time. Postseason Honors: Paul Graham (HL Coach of the Year); Molly McNamara (HL Champion 100 butterfly, 200 buttefly, HL Female Scholar-Athlete of the Winter Season, HL Female Athlete of the Year); Tobie Zeller (HL Champion 100 breaststroke).


MEN’S BASKETBALL First-year head coach Dennis Felton’s squad showed continued improvement throughout the season and culminated the year with a run to the Horizon League Championship game. The eighth-seeded Vikings magical run came up one win shy of earning the third NCAA bid in program history. Seeded eighth in the League tournament, the Vikings defeated ninth-seeded Youngstown State in the opening round, 7271, and shocked top-seed and defending tournament champion Northern Kentucky in the quarterfinals, 89-80. A 44-43 victory over fourth-seeded Oakland sent the Vikings to the championship game for the first time since 2009, but second-seeded Wright State ended the Cinderella run in the title game. CSU was the second-highest seeded team to ever play for a Horizon League title.

Senior Kenny Carpenter was one of the most improved players in the Horizon League, capping his final season with 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, while senior Bobby Word averaged 10.3 points and made 84 three-pointers, the second most in a season in school history. The Vikings set a single season school record for three-pointers made (294) and threes attempted (863) and tied the single game school record with 14 three pointers made in four games this year. Carpenter also received the Mr. Viking Award at the VESPYS, which is presented to the CSU senior that represent what it means to be the ultimate Viking on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Postseason Honors: Tyree Appleby (HL Freshman Team; #HLMBB Tournament Team), Kenny Carpenter (#HLMBB Tournament Team).




WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Using a veteran laden team, the Cleveland State women’s basketball program posted one of its better seasons in recent history, finishing the 2017-18 campaign with a 19-11 overall record - the eighth 19+ win season in program history. During non-league play, the Vikings posted an 8-3 record, setting a program record with the .727 winning percentage and tying the program record for most nonleague wins in a season. Cleveland State continued its strong play during Horizon League action, finishing the regular season with an 11-7 league record - the sixth double-digit #HLWBB campaign under Peterson Abiad. Included in the 11 Horizon League wins was a 71-60 victory Green Bay who was ranked No. 19 nationally at the time. This marked Cleveland State’s first victory over the Phoenix since the 2009-10 season and just the sixth victory in the series in program history.

Throughout the season the trio of Khayla Livingston, Olivia Voskuhl and Ashanti Abshaw worked their way into the CSU Career Record Book, and became the second trio from the same roster to join the 1,000-point club in program history. Livingston finished her Viking career as the best three-point shooter in program history, owning the career, single-season and single-game three-point records. After leading the Vikings for the last 15 seasons, head coach Kate Peterson Abiad the coaching field following the 2017-18 campaign. As the all-time winningest coach in program history, Peterson Abiad led the Vikings to a pair of Horizon League Tournament titles (2008 & 2010) and six 19-win seasons. Postseason Honors: Ashanti Abshaw (HL First Team); Khayla Livingston (HL First Team); Shadae Bosley (HL Defensive Team).


WRESTLING Junior Evan Cheek’s fantastic performance in the 2018 calendar year highlighted Cleveland State’s 2017-18 season. After starting his season at 133 pounds, Cheek moved up to 141 and saw his season take off. He placed at the prestigious Southern Scuffle event to begin 2018, marking the second straight year a Viking was the only unseeded competitor to place at his weight class. Despite being seeded third at the EWL Championships, Cheek won the title at 141 pounds with a pair of pins sandwiched around a nail-biting, sudden-victory win. In the championship bout, Cheek defeated Brock Zacherl, an undefeated, top-five opponent, via first-period pin. As a result, Cheek was named Outstanding Wrestler of the EWL Championships. He became just the third Viking ever to win that honor and the first in 35 years.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba, who was battling an eye injury sustained during the event, placed fourth at the EWL meet, dropping a pair of matches in sudden-victory sessions. True freshman Georgio Poullas also placed fourth at the EWL meet, dropping his two bouts by a combined six points. On the team side, the Vikings collected wins over two opponents that had beaten them a season prior. Cleveland State took down Northern Illinois, 28-12, in December and notched a EWL victory over George Mason, 2918, in January. Postseason Honors: Evan Cheek (EWL Champion, Outstanding Wrestler of the EWL Championships, NCAA Qualifier).




MEN’S TENNIS For the first time over the last five years the Cleveland State men’s tennis team returned to the top of the Horizon League, as the Vikings captured their sixth #HLMTEN Tournament title in program history to cap off an excellent 2017-18 campaign. Cleveland State finished the year with a 17-11 record - recording its seventh 17+ win season in program history and the first since the 2014-15 campaign. Included in this record was an 11-1 mark at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, tying the record for most home wins in a single season. The quartet of Nico Mostardi, Matthew Terry, Luke Phillips, and Benjamin Slade all recorded 20+ singles wins on the year, marking just the second time in program history that four Vikings on the same roster have recorded 20-win seasons in the same year. Mostardi and Terry finished the year ranked second on the CSU Single-Season Wins List, while Slade joined the 50-win club and ended the year tied for ninth on the CSU Wins List.

Following the 2018 spring season, Cleveland State earned a top10 regional ranking, finishing the year ranked No. 9 in the ITA Midwest Region. This marked just the third time in program history that the Vikings earned a top-10 finish, also doing so following the 2009 and 2010 seasons. For the 17th season, the Vikings were under the direction of head coach Brian Etzkin, who finished the year with 234 career victories at the helm of the program. Etzkin has led Cleveland State to all six of its NCAA Tournament appearances, and is the only current Horizon League coach with 200+ wins at their current school. With the 2018 #HLMTEN Tournament title, the Vikings lead all current schools with six tournament titles, while they also have a league-best five regular season crowns. Postseason Honors: Nico Mostardi (HL Player of the Year, First Team); Luke Phillips (HL Second Team); Matthew Terry (HL Freshman of the Year, Second Team).


WOMEN’S TENNIS Despite playing with a limited lineup throughout the season, the women’s tennis team posted a successful 2017-18 campaign, finishing in the top-three in the Horizon League standings for the ninth straight year and advancing to the #HLWTEN Semifinals for the 12th time in program history. The Vikings finished the year with a 12-13 overall record, including a 7-2 mark against league teams marking the third straight year with 7+ wins against league opponents. For the third season the Vikings were calling the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion home, a facility where they own a 23-8 record. Over the last three years the Vikings have dropped just two league matches at the MMTP, owning a 12-2 regular season home record in #HLWTEN play.

Individually, Aleksandra Golawska finished her career tied for seventh on the CSU Singles Wins List, while she also finished seventh on the CSU Doubles Wins List. Golawska, along with Isabella Spindler finished the year ranked second as a tandem on the CSU Doubles Wins List as one of just two teams in program history with 39+ wins as a doubles team throughout their careers. The Vikings were under the direction of the 16-year head coach Brian Etzkin - the all-time winningest coach in program history. During the non-league slate, Etzkin recorded his 200th career victory, becoming one of just two Horizon League coaches to own 200+ wins at their current school. Postseason Honors: Isabella Spindler (HL First Team).




LACROSSE Cleveland State demonstrated significant signs of progress in its second year of existence as the young program continued its growth. Cleveland State collected four wins against Division I opponents in 2018 while facing six teams among the top 25 in the NCAA’s RPI. After hosting Ohio State in its season opener in front of a sold out crowd, the Vikings picked up a signature win later in the month. Cleveland State stunned defending Southern Conference champion Air Force, 8-7, as CSU picked up its first road win over a Division I opponent. The Vikings closed the season by winning three of their final four games that did not come against nationally ranked opponents, as Cleveland State notched comprehensive victories over Lafayette, Hampton and Sacred Heart.

The Vikings also hosted eventual national championship game participant Duke in mid-March and put forth one of the top defensive efforts of the season against the Blue Devils. CSU was one of only three teams to hold Duke to a single-digit goal total in 2018, as the Vikings held the Blue Devils to a season-low .231 shooting percentage. Freshman Stephen Russo made 17 saves against Duke, the best mark by a DU opponent in 2018, and was subsequently named to USILA’s Team of the Week. Freshman Michael Wilson had points in all 13 of his starts and led the team with 35 points on the strength of a .457 shooting percentage.


SOFTBALL The Vikings had an early season seven-game win streak, but battled through injuries and adverse weather conditions all season en route to a 15-34 mark. Senior Mackenzie Joecken was one of the top utility players in the League this year, hitting .324 with 11 runs, seven doubles, five home runs and 24 RBI. In the circle, she won six games and led the team with 80 strikeouts. Joecken was the only player in the Horizon League to earn both Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

Junior Riley Ries hit .333 with 16 runs and led the team in doubles (10), home runs (6) and RBI (31), while senior Mel Woodard led the team with a .336 batting average and added a team-high 22 runs with six doubles, two triples and seven RBI. Senior Kristin Catalano set the CSU program record with 70 career relief appearances. Postseason Honors: Mackenzie Joecken (HL Second Team), Riley Ries (HL Second Team).




WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings finished in third place at the Horizon League Championship. CSU was in sixth place after the first round, but used a second round 315 to climb into fourth place and a final round 316 allowed CSU to finish third. In all, CSU had four top-three finishes and a pair of runner-up showings this year. The Vikings also set the single season scoring record at 316.0, bettering the old mark by more than one shot. Freshman Madison Butler led the team with a 78.7 scoring average, the fifth lowest for a season in school history and the second lowest for a freshman. Butler began her collegiate career by winning the YSU Roseann Schwartz Invitational with rounds of 72-77 (149), becoming the fifth player in school history to win a tournament.

Sophomore Kaylee Neumeister’s average of 78.8 was the sixth lowest for a season in program history, while senior Sophie Kelner capped her career with an 80.9 scoring average, the fourth best in school history. Kelner also received the Ms. Viking Award at the VESPYS, which is presented to the CSU senior that represent what it means to be the ultimate Viking on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Postseason Honors: Madison Butler (HL Second Team); Kaylee Neumeister (HL Second Team).


MEN’S GOLF Cleveland State captured its fifth straight Horizon League Championship and advanced to the NCAA regionals. It marked the ninth League title in the last 13 years for the program and the 10th overall. The Vikings shot a first round 303 and were in second place after the opening round. A second round 292 - the lowest round of the tournament vaulted CSU into the lead - and the Vikings shot a final round 294 to claim the title by 18 shots over runner-up Oakland. Junior Anton Krecic was the runner-up at the League tournament, a year after claiming medalist honors, while senior Blake Prince finished fifth as both players were named to the all-tournament team.

Krecic led the team with a 74.2 scoring average this year, which is the 10th best in a season in school history. The Vikings were selected to the NCAA Columbus Regional at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course where CSU finished 13th. Freshman Jules Blakeley was the teams top finisher, tying for 46th place with rounds of 75-75-77 (227) for his lowest 54-hole score of the season. The season marked the end of the careers for seniors Joey Krecic, Prince and Matt McAdoo. The trio became the third, fourth and fifth players in school history to win four straight League titles. Postseason Honors: Anton Krecic (HL First Team; #HLGolf Tournament Team), Blake Prince (#HLGolf Tournament Team).




TRACK & FIELD In just its second season as a full NCAA member, the track and field team had another successful season of continued improvement during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, setting multiple school and personal records during 2017-18. During the indoor season the Vikings had a six-meet slate leading up to the Horizon League Indoor Championships, in which they had four podium finishes from Anna Brandt (800 Meter Run), Julianne Dorothal (Pentathlon), Hannah Gaskins (Pentathlon), and Rachel Wenzel (High Jump). The Vikings then had steady improvement throughout a challenging six-meet outdoor schedule, capturing event wins at the Bob Kahn Invitational (Hannah Gaskins-High Jump, Lauren Zawie-400 Meter Dash, 4x100 Relay) and the Ashland Alumni Open (Jessica Finley-5000 Meter Run).

At the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, the Vikings finished seventh as a team after recording eight podium finishes, including two from Julianne Dorothal (Heptathlon & Javelin) and Hannah Gaskins (Heptathlon & High Jump). Also recording podium finishes for the Vikings were Anna Brandt (400 Meter Hurdles), Chan’lier Myers (100 Meter Dash), Rachel Wenzel (High Jump), and the 4x100 Relay Team. Throughout both the indoor and outdoor seasons, the Vikings set 31 of a possible 36 program records. Postseason Honors: Hannah Gaskins (HL Outdoor Co-Freshman Field Athlete, Second Team).


COMMUNITY SERVICE The Cleveland State Athletic Department prides itself on putting an emphasis on community service - from department-wide initiatives to sportby-sport activities - Viking student-athletes, coaches and administrators are willing to lend a helping hand. All 18 teams spend countless hours in the community at various service projects including; Special Olympics, Kids Kicking Cancer, Kids Day Games & Community Day Games, Habitat For Humanity, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Rocky River Men’s Group, Blessing Bags, Cleveland FoodBank, St. Jude’s Run/ Walk, Youth Clinics, and so much more. This year, the lacrosse team was honored with the annual Community Service Award for completing more than 1,000 hours throughout academic year.




VESPYS The 2017-18 edition of ‘The VESPYS’ was the sixth annual Viking Excellence In Sport Performance Yearly Awards, highlighting outstanding performances by Cleveland State student-athletes and teams throughout the academic year. 13 awards were handed out throughout the evening, while the three Horizon League Tournament Championship teams were also honored. The most prestigious award of the night - Mr. & Ms. Viking - went to men’s basketball’s Kenny Carpenter and women’s golf’s Sophie Kelner. This award is given to the graduating senior who represents the ultimate Viking - showcasing academics, athletic performance and leadership. The VESPY awards are voted on by the Cleveland State athletic administration, coaches and student-athletes.

ACADEMICS A record 231 student-athletes representing all 18 sports were recognized at the 28th annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon, with Women’s Fencing (Best of the Best), Jamie VanDewerker (President’s Award), Samantha Butterbaugh (John McLendon Award), Sophie Kelner (John & Sandra Konstantinos’s Scholarship), and Mackenzie Joecken (FAR Award) earning major accolades. Throughout the year, 232 student-athletes earned a spot on the Cleveland State Dean’s List, including 128 that made the list during both the Fall and Spring semesters. The Vikings also combined for 63 perfect semester 4.0’s during the academic year. At the 2018 Spring Commencement ceremonies, three student-athletes were recognized as Outstanding Seniors in their respective fields, as
