ov e r a l l

For the second time in program history Chuck Voss led the Vikings to the top of the Horizon League in 2012, as he guided Cleveland State to its second league title and second trip to the NCAA Tournament. Under Voss, the Vikings have now recorded five 20-win seasons, a .603 winning percentage, a pair of regular season Horizon League titles, two Horizon League Tournament titles and countless accolades. The success of the 2012 season did not come as a surprise, as Voss - who was named the 2012 Horizon League Coach of the Year - has meticulously put his stamp on the Cleveland State volleyball program throughout his 13-year tenure, turning it into a Horizon League Championship contender year after year. Part of this comes from Voss and his staff continuously recruiting gifted student-athletes who possess agility, athleticism, intelligence, size, strength, and power - all qualities that lead to a championship caliber team. Last season the Vikings posted an overall record of 23-7, marking their fourth-straight 20-win season. Included in their overall record was a 13-1 mark in Horizon League contests, which tied the program record for most league wins in a season. With the 13-1 league record, CSU claimed the regular season title and earned the top seed in the league’s post-season tournament. With wins over Loyola and UIC in the semifinal and championship matches of the Horizon League Tournament, the Vikings earned their second trip to the NCAA Tournament in the past six years with the program’s second Horizon League Tournament title. This time the Vikings earned a First Round contest against No. 20 Kansas, falling to the Jayhawks 3-1. Despite the loss, the Vikings were still able to post a program first, picking up their first-ever NCAA Tournament set win - a 25-17 decision in the first frame against KU. Voss has now led the Vikings to the Horizon League semifinals in each of the last nine seasons, one of just two schools in the league to accomplish the feat. In addition, CSU has played in six league title matches during that span, winning the 2007 and 2012 tournament titles. Four of those Horizon League Championship match appearances came between 2011 and 2007 - a five-year span in which Voss led the Vikings to a 103-51 record (.668). Highlights during this five-year stretch include Cleveland State claiming the regular season title for the first time in program history during 2009, Voss picking up his 200th career win and earning Horizon League Coach of the Year honors during the same season, the Vikings posting a record-tying 13 league wins during the 2011, 2009 and 2007 seasons, and most memorable of all CSU winning its first-ever Horizon League Championship in 2007. During that memorable 2007 season, Cleveland State posted a 13-3 mark in league matches - finishing as the regular season runner-up. Voss then guided the second-seeded Vikings to wins over Youngstown State, Wright State and Valparaiso during the Horizon League Tournament, dropping just two sets throughout the entire tournament en route to the program’s first-ever Horizon League Tournament Title. Along with the Horizon League crown, the Vikings earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament where they had the chance to play on a national stage for the first time in program history. Despite falling to Albany in the First Round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, the Vikings made their mark as a Horizon League Championship contender and became a prominent name at the top of the league standings. The Vikings finished the 2007 campaign with a 23-9 record, marking the ninth time that CSU eclipsed the 20-win mark, but the first under Voss after a pair of 18-win seasons and two 19-win campaigns. The climb to be a championship contender year-in and year-out was not an easy one though. When Voss arrived in Cleveland to take over the program in 2000, the Vikings had not enjoyed a winning season in 17 years and were coming off a season in which they won just eight matches and were just 3-9 in the league. But that did not deter Voss, who guided CSU to a respectable 19-36 mark during his first two seasons at the helm. It was in 2002 that Voss really began to show what he could do on the sidelines, leading CSU to its first winning season (18-13) in 19 years. Prior to the 2007 season, Voss’ most successful run at CSU came in 2004 when he led the Vikings to the Horizon League Championship match for the first time in program history. Although the Vikings fell to Loyola in five sets, Voss’ blueprint of constructing a championship program was beginning to take form and people were starting to take note of Cleveland State volleyball.

the Cleveland State volleyball team, as the Vikings achieved goal-after-goal with hard work, determination and focus. As a team that worked together so effortlessly on the court and off, the Vikings were able to put together one of the best seasons in program history, which included a Horizon League Tournament Title and trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Vikings finished the 2012 campaign with a 23-7 record marking the fourth straight 20-win season and the fifth under head coach Chuck Voss. Included in Cleveland State’s overall record was a 13-1 mark in league contests, as CSU claimed the regular season title for just the second time in program history. The Vikings opened the 2012 season in much of the same way as they ended it - as champions. CSU won its first three matches of the year over Kent State, IPFW and Murray State to claim the IPFW Invitational crown. The Vikings then went on to post a 5-4 record throughout their final three early season tournaments - and entered Horizon League play with an 8-5 record. Cleveland State opened its Horizon League regular season slate with a pair of road victories - including the Vikings’ first win over Milwaukee in the past three seasons. The following weekend the Vikings fell to Loyola in straight sets, the only

During that 11-match win streak; CSU reached the 20-win mark in a five-set thriller against Valparaiso (Nov. 3), clinched the Horizon League regular season title with a 3-0 sweep of Wright State (Nov. 2), and posted program win No. 700 against UIC (Sept. 29). Throughout the league schedule the Vikings posted eight 3-0 sweeps and had a perfect 7-0 record on the road. CSU also became just the second league team to finish regular season play with only one loss over the past 10 years. After ending the season with a 13-1 league record, the Vikings not only captured the regular season title, but also earned the honor of hosting the Horizon League Tournament as the top-seeded team. As the No. 1 seed, CSU received a bye into the semifinals of the tournament where the Vikings were able to take down No. 4 Loyola in straight sets, advancing to the Championship match for the sixth time under Voss. The Cleveland State volleyball team is proud to call the Homer E. Woodling Gymnasium home. Thanks to a facelift in the summer of 2003, the refinished floor features the volleyball court as the primary markings on the middle of three basketball courts. Located within the Physical Education Building, the gym seats 1,500 for volleyball matches and upwards of 3,000 for wrestling. It boasts a suspended running track that is used year round. The volleyball locker room, a full service training room and a newly-built, fully-stocked weight room are located in the lower levels of the P.E. Building. Woodling Gym has served as the host for numerous championships, including the 2006 & 2012 NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals, the 2000, 2008 & 2012 Horizon League Volleyball Championships, the 1999 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship and the 1999 Eastern Wrestling League Championship. Recently, the Vikings have turned the gym into a significant home court advantage, posting a 47-18 (.723) mark over the past five seasons in Woodling Gym and winning a CSU Invitational title in the process.
