U.S. proof coins are incredibly brilliant with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Here’s how these special collector’s sets are created: the San Francisco Mint uses coin blanks that are specially treated, polished and cleaned to ensure high quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with hand-polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp, high relief. The coins are then packaged in presentation cases to showcase and maintain their exceptional finish. A. 50 State Quarters Clad Proof Set The State Quarter program entered its final year in 2008 honoring the States in the order in which they were admitted into the Union. The final set featured designs including Oklahoma’s “Scissortail Flycatcher,” New Mexico’s “Land of Enchantment,” Arizona’s “Grand Canyon with Saguaro Cactus,” Alaska’s “Grizzly Bear with Salmon,” and Hawaii’s “King Kamehameha I.” The tenth and final year of the program is over, so hurry – these proofs are sold out at the US Mint and the early years are becoming very difficult to obtain.
