By Robert H. Schuller illiam Cowper needed a miracle. He attempted suicide more than once. He put a rope around his neck and the rope broke. So he walked to the river, where he knew of a deep spot by the bridge, but there were so many people on the bridge, he could not jump. He went back home where he took an ornamental sword off the wall and put it to his chest. He threw his body down on it, but the point of the sword hit a rib bone, snapped the sword in two and suddenly, William Cowper called out, “Lord, forgive me!” And at that moment, he said, “Jesus Christ came into my life. I sensed His presence. It was powerful. It was real.” He was born again. He wrote a poem about this series of miracles and it became a great hymn of the church, “God Moves in a Mysterious Way.”

Then, what about your miracles and mine? • My son, Christopher, is healed of asthma and meningitis at 3-1/2 months of age. • My father, Robert H. Schuller, completely recovers from double brain surgery. • A woman I pray for who has been suffering with cancer returns to say it is gone. • Another woman I pray for who has lupus returns one Sunday to say she has been healed.
• Two little girls who were declared “brain dead” were given one day and then another, then taken off life support and are alive today. Just the other day I saw the wedding picture of one. That is a miracle! • Of course, the sun rose today—that is a miracle! Jesus is alive and loves you and forgives you and me. That is a miracle! Remember the miracles. Memorialize them. Plant a tree. Build a stone memorial. Keep a miracle journal. And let the world know—that God has done, is doing, and will do miracles— yesterday, today, and forever!

Why is it important to remember the miracles? It is important because it shores up our faith when we are waiting for our miracle. I think it is much easier to get an instant miracle. But to wait to see—that takes even more faith. To believe when you don’t see—that’s actually the definition of faith. But our faith is strengthened while we wait for our miracle by remembering that God did perform miracles. And God is immutable…He doesn’t change. The same God of the Old Testament and the New Testament is the same God today and forever. So, let’s remember the miracles! (This list is not exhaustive. Please feel free to add to it!): • Sarah conceived a child at the age of ninety. • Moses’ life is spared and he is placed as a prince in the house of Pharaoh. • The Red Sea is parted and the people are saved from

Remember the Miracles hen we prayed and asked God to send us a miracle for the Crystal Cathedral—to deliver us with the $50 million dollars we needed before Thanksgiving, 2011, I believed with all my heart that we would see this miracle. There were a few moments when my faith waivered but I had learned to remember the miracles. And when I took time to remember the miracles, my faith was once again restored. God instructed His children way back in the Old Testament to set up stone memorials so they could remember the miracles. There are numerous chapters in the Bible where the miracles are listed and remembered (for example: Nehemiah 9:7-25; Psalm 136, and Hebrews 11). When the Hebrew nation crossed the Jordan River to occupy the Promised Land, they were instructed to build a stone memorial so that their children’s children would remember the miracles.
God moves in a mysterious way. His wonders to perform; He plants His footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm.

Years later, when I was then an Iowa farm boy, a tornado destroyed our home, our barn, our livelihood—we lost everything except the clothes on our backs. With so many of us in our community suffering, we went to our little country church for a special prayer meeting. What hymn did we sing? We sang the hymn with lyrics written by William Cowper, who—with Jesus in his heart—wrote about God’s miracles:
