he power of words! I was fortunate to be raised by Robert Schuller who would spend time at every meal discussing words and how important it was to choose our words wisely. My husband, Jim and I tried to follow his lead when we raised our sons. Imagine my surprise when my son Christopher was five years old. Like my other sons, he went to a private Christian school. Both of Jim and I felt it was worth every penny when one day this young boy—who usually spoke in terms of truck, plane, and car sounds—burst forth from the back seat of the car: “For God so loved the world that He sent His one and only begotten Son that whosoever believes He made you! in Him should not perish but have everlasting life!” (John 3:16). He loves you! Jim and I looked at each other in astonishment. This May, we watched with pride as Christopher walked in cap and gown to receive his Masters in Divinity degree. Surely we should have had a clue that morning in the car that God had a call on Christopher’s life to proclaim the Word! These words in John were Christ’s response to Nicodemus who had paid Jesus a midnight visit. These words were proclaimed by The Word! John opens his book of the Bible with an amazing description of Jesus, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made” Christopher with his grandma Coleman. (John 1:1-3) . This claim means that Jesus is the image of God. He was with God from the beginning. He is the Creator. He made you! He loves you! He breathes His life, His love into your life. So, I challenge you, today, to use the power of your words to praise the Word! Worship the Word today with your words! Say it today and every day… “Thank you, Jesus, for being the Word of my life! I praise You, Lord! Amen.”

Schuller One of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned came straight from the mouth of my Savior Jesus when He said, in Matthew 6:15, “Your heavenly Father will forgive you if you forgive those who sin against you.” Forgiveness is non-judgmental love. That’s the only real love. Most people love judgmentally: “I’ll love you if you agree with me.” “I’ll love you if you’ll start living a cleaner life.” “If you don’t meet my expectations, I will not love you.” Even if we did not believe in God, He still loves us non-judgmentally. There are no “ifs” in God’s love for you and me! In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said that if we love only the people that agree with us, what is so great about that? Even scoundrels and crooks love their fellow crooks. Jesus went on to say that genuine love is shown when God allows the sun to shine on the just and the unjust, and His rain falls on the good as well as the evil. That may seem unjust to you, but let me assure you this concept is filled with mercy. And there will always be a tension between justice and mercy! Jesus despises our transgressions but loves us anyway…and always. When we err, we are forgiven even before we think to ask. However, we are able to be conscious of His forgiveness only by forgiving others: “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” If you are having difficulty forgiving someone because “what they did is just not right,” let me encourage you to listen to what Jesus says, and forgive as you have been forgiven.
