Let’s get the arts out there!

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

Dennis de Caires exhibition “Wuh Part You Is?” at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. February 23rd to March 24th Open Monday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm

About the artist

“Dennis de Caires (b. 1957) was born in Guyana and has lived in the UK and Barbados. He completed a BFA at Winchester School of Art and an MA at The Royal College of Art, London, as well as completed further study at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He has exhibited extensively in the Caribbean and internationally, with 21 solo exhibitions to date, notably at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, Queens Park Gallery, Zemicon Gallery in Barbados and the UNESCO Galleries in Paris.

He has been in 13 group exhibitions internationally, and in addition to the Barbados National Art Gallery collection, his work is held in numerous public collections including The British Council, De Montfort University in Leicester, the National Gallery of Art in Guyana and the Georgia Museum of Art in Atlanta, USA. He has been awarded two British Council Travel awards and has participated in residencies in Trinidad & Tobago, Switzerland and Colorado.

In an artist statement, de Caires outlines “If I were pressed to make a statement I would confess my desire to make paintings that are contemplative and encourage a slower reading of the world. A more recent impetus, with a full time return to the Caribbean, has been a more acute awareness of, and engagement with nature: leaves, clouds, sea and birds and the moon.”

Congratulations to artist Annalee Davis. Her exhibition ‘In The Sugar Gardens at AWL Gallery in Girona, Spain. From May 8th.

“AWL is pleased to announce ‘In the Sugar Gardens’, the gallery’s first exhibition of work by Annalee Davis (@annalee.devere) on view in Girona from May 8. Featuring new sculptures, a new sound work, embroideries, as well as historical works on paper, the exhibition is a survey of Davis’s trajectory curated by Sira Piza (@sira_piza).

Annalee Davis (Barbados, 1963) explores the intersection of history and biography in discussions of ‘post-plantation economies’ with cultural activism in the arts sector. Davis’ works explore Barbados’ transformation from a once biodiverse landscape to sugar plantations, and more recently a tourism-dependent islandboth arguably sectors of enclosure and exclusion. In the exhibition, ’In the Sugar Gardens´, AWL gallery spaces are conceived as a former home. Each of the areas unravel the interconnected complexities of Annalee Davis’ practice, weaving together the experience of her land of origin and its people in contemporaneity, while digging through the layers of dependencies, trauma, and regeneration that the land holds or encompasses.”

The Board of the Barbados National Art Gallery is pleased to share news of the acquisition of two works by Cy Hutchinson (@cyhutchinsonart): “Protection Series 11” and “Protection Series 12” (2023).

“These works were created for Hutchinson’s 2023 solo exhibition at Queen’s Park Gallery titled ‘A Collection of Pointless Objects’.

The artist described this series as having an “underlying theme of protection; whether the piece represents a shield, a weapon, an amulet or a cleansing process.”

He continues, “the Greenheart for these two works was sourced from a boardwalk refurbishment in Bridgetown along the Careenage. These were some of the supporting beams under the walkway that were being discarded and I was fortunate to get a few of them. The pattern on the pierced piece - Protection Series 11 - was done entirely freehand and any defects, bolt or nail holes etc. were incorporated into the design. There are 130 holes along the two edges that were bound with sinew, each hole took between 4-8 feet of sinew and there are a total of 355 holes overall.

The piece with the carbon fiber - Protection Series 12 - had a very weathered texture which I appreciated and decided to work with, it also had two large holes (one top, one bottom) which I decided to mirror about a horizontal and vertical axis resulting in the eight holes that I had decided on for the finished work. The carbon fiber piece was tapered both ends, bound with cord in selected areas and subtly highlighted with solid 18k gold which compliments and lifts the tones in the wood. It also satisfied my need to use modern materials in work representative of ancient artifacts.”

“The exhibition ‘Something to Say' is exactly as it presents itself. Every artist whether subconsciously or by intention is telling a story through their art. The exhibition 'Something to Say' is an opportunity for artists to get those words off of their chest and onto the walls. Titles that spark discussion have been encouraged. A single paragraph that gives the viewer a window into the themes chosen.”

THE INVISIBLE MURALS OF TEMPLE YARD

Barbadians viewed TEMPLE YARD as a place of exile for “the pariahs” who want to live apart from society - smoking weed and talking ‘bout Africa - and failed to recognize that TEMPLE YARD exemplifies the rich history of creativity and enterprise, and the culture of resilience and survival of AfroCaribbean people.

Only the brave venture there to buy organic products, vegan food and leather craft, but few explored the vast tapestry of murals that adorned the perimeter walls and individual kiosks.

So, as the weather-worn wooden kiosks are demolished, and the institutions of state build a more aesthetically pleasing workspace for the Rastafarian community to increase their visibility and bring consumer traffic, we say goodbye to the dynamic and diverse murals … and anticipate the new ones.”

Temple Yard upgrade project to empower Rastafarian community in Bridgetown from Barbados Today06/04/2024

“Government’s efforts to revitalize markets in the city will soon include a reimagined Temple Yard. Speaking on behalf of the planning committee, Christal Austin, Director (Ag.) Public Affairs Department, said the official reconstruction effort is soon to get underway.

“Temple Yard, historically, has been a hub of cultural, culinary and artistic expression for the Rastafarian Community in Bridgetown and, like many areas of the capital, is in need of a facelift.

“The planning team is engaging actively with the vendors and the wider Rastafarian community, who are the ultimate beneficiaries, to develop and execute the new design. We are looking at how do we preserve the legacy of this iconic space while advancing the economic and sociocultural wellbeing of this important community.

“This will mean incorporating events, proper lighting and security. We are also working on new standards for tenants who will be given business development guidance and support throughout the transition period so that the new space can welcome both locals and visitors to the island.”

Austin added that the committee was actively exploring areas where the current vendors can be temporarily relocated with emphasis on areas in and around the current Cheapside location. A town hall is also in the works to inform and engage vendors and nearby residents and businesses.

The project team includes the representatives from Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTII), Public Affairs Department (PAD), Urban Development Commission (UDC), the Prime Minister’ Office (PMO) and Markets Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Nutritional Security.” https://barbadostoday.bb/.../temple-yard-upgrade.../amp/

Responding to the Historic Postcard collection of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the artists offer unprecedented narratives through original works, and critically engage with, challenge and dismantle the ways in which Black bodies have been objectified, dehumanised, and reduced to stereotypes through the lens of colonialism.

KINGDOM OF BARBADOS•

• Sunday, April 14th, will mark the 208th anniversary of the Bussa/only acted Barbados Slave Revolt

• To honour the ancestors I am going to do my first solo exhibition entitled "The Kingdom of Barbados". The exhibition is from the perspective of an enslaved person imagining; dreaming of what life could be if they had won the Bussa Rebellion

• These are some sketches, pieces and ideas that I've worked on between 2017 and 2023 (so it's been a while coming) I'll share more updates during the month of March and in April as I work on the pieces !

• Very grateful for the support and love I've received so far and looking forward to sharing the space when everything is done !

• Blessings ! •AN UPDATE•

• So I'm planning to do this exhibition in April and it's required a deeper dive into history than I've done before.

• The emotional weight doing extra research for this project was going to have was definitely not something I fully considered; It's alot .

• It has been a wild experience but also a revolutionary one.

• My persepctive on communal freedom and personal freedom have definitely been impacted and are quite literally changing every day.

• Love this for us. ❤️

• Here's a sprinkle of some references and some sketches !

• Looking forward to sharing some more as the weeks continue on !

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS

of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
