The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott

Absolutely stunning x“ Cy Hutchinson's exhibition, "A Collection of Pointless Objects" at Queen’s Park Gallery. October 14th to November 4th the Queen's Park Gallery. Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm. This solo exhibition celebrates craftsmanship and creativity, featuring a collection of meticulously designed objects from a curated selection of over 30 local and imported materials.

CY HUTCHINSON

A COLLECTION OF POINTLESS OBJECTS

The pointed oval is a shape I have focused on for many of my works and felt like some insight was necessary about the shape. Leaves, fish, feathers, a spearpoint, femininity, an eye, a streamlined shape; these are just a few places where this shape is found and I have used all and many more in the various works shown here. For me the shape represents life, death and all between. The viewer can see the objects and interpret what they believe each variation to represent.

CY HUTCHINSON A COLLECTION OF POINTLESS OBJECTS Cy Hutchinson is a Barbados born artist producing three dimensional works. Known primarily for working with a large variety of local woods, Cy produces pieces using both natural and man made materials often incorporating hand-shaped/sculpted metals and other exotic elements into his projects. His love for working with his hands led him to attend Rycotewood College in England from 1994 to 1998 where he earned a National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Furniture Design and Making. Cy’s work is influenced by Nature’s designs along with the actual materials he works with. These influences as well as elements from primitive, tribal and organic forms are present in his finished work. He especially relates to the beliefs of Constantin Brancusi and George Nakashima of using shapes that represent the essence of a form or object and treating materials with utmost respect. The attention to detail and high level of surface finish is consistently recognized by those who view his work. He takes much time in selecting the correct piece of wood for each project, positioning and aligning the grain to ensure that the overall work is cohesive. Cy’s work is widely appreciated and has been exhibited and awarded both locally and internationally.

CY HUTCHINSON

A COLLECTION OF POINTLESS OBJECTS

I believe that there are certain shapes and objects that impact and affect us when we see them. Whether it is a subconscious recognition or primal understanding of what they mean I am not sure. I have read about Carl Gustav Jung’s idea of the Collective Unconscious. The Oxford dictionary says, “The part of the unconscious mind which is derived from ancestral memory and experience and is common to all humankind as distinct from the individuals unconscious” It is with this intention that I have designed and made this series of objects; to awaken the ancient soul that lies dormant in most of us. Much as the first people did, I use cues from Nature for aspects of the design and I blend these with beautiful wood and exotic materials.

Embassy of the Argentine Republic, Barbados & Artists Alliance Barbados Invites you to view ‘ACCESS’ an exhibition of visual art. Opening reception Friday November 3rd. In celebration of Independence 2023 and two years further down the road of being a Republic, Artists Alliance Barbados is encouraging artists to submit work on the theme of ‘Access’.

Inspired by the excerpt (below) from HERITAGE VS CULTURE, an article written by Norma Springer in 2021. “We are late to recognize the beach as cultural heritage. In the 1970s Fr Andrew Hatch was warning us to guard against Barbados becoming an inner city with all the attendant social and economic chaos when we lose access to the beaches for escape and play. In our short-sightedness we heard but did not understand, and today as every window to the sea is closed and the sea is taking back the beach, we are again recycling talk about beach access. In reality we do have beach access – narrow, garbage shewn paths to take us down for a dip but we are not to linger as we do not have a place to unload chairs, cooler and pot of pelau from our cars, nor space to spread out, eat or play. These living experiences my friends are the result of the narrow thinking of de gatekeepers whether in de govment or in de parliament – that access is just an entryway.

Access is an essentially contested concept in sociology but that does not prevent our policy makers setting the meaning for purpose. The lazy definition is entry into or use of – once de door open yah can go in, while the other approach looks at factors influencing entry or use that requires more effort from our policy makers and regulation controllers to consider how Bajans use the beach, how to preserved both entry and usage while sharing it wid de turists dem. De turists dem can spread out in dem beach chairs but Bajans got tah drawup by de high water mark policed by their own sons and daughters. Again, I acknowledge the works of our visual artists on beach access – Arlette St Hill’s installation at Queens Park Gallery Beach Access, (circa 2010), Therese Hadchidy curated exhibition Water (2019, Queens Park Gallery), and Annalee Davis with her video, Public Beach Access (circa 2012) and essay Beach as Plot (2020). Davis’s video shows her actually measuring the width of these access paths de govment made sure we have. There are many more artists across all forms and genres working to help us see, hear and understand the world around us, but alas!” We encourage you to not only explore questions of access to our beaches, but to cast your nets further and submit work that also looks at access to health, education, information, land, money and choice.” - Norma Springer

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is pleased to announce the exhibition LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze, launching on 20 July 2023. LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze is a powerful collaboration between five women artists working primarily in photography – Risée Chaderton-Charles, Jalisa Marshall, Joy Maynard, Amber Newton and Kia Redman. Responding to the Historic Postcard collection of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the artists offer unprecedented narratives through original works, and critically engage with, challenge and dismantle the ways in which Black bodies have been objectified, dehumanised, and reduced to stereotypes through the lens of colonialism. The artists invite us to reconsider the power dynamics at play in the production and circulation of images, and offer alternative visual languages of the Caribbean that center Black agency and subjectivity. For more information, please contact Curator Natalie McGuire at info@barbmuse.org.bb or +1 (246) 538 - 0201.

Congratulations to Annalee Davis exhibiting her suite of six drawings, ‘Second Spring’ in the Linhas Tortes exhibition at Mendes Wood DM, Sāo Paulo. “Thank you to Diana Cambell for including my suite of six drawings, ‘Second Spring’ in the Linhas Tortes exhibition at Mendes Wood DM, Sāo Paulo. Made while on residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2019, these large-scale drawings explore women’s embarkation into the uncharted territory following the generative stage of life. I wanted to ask questions about how our experiences with growing invisibility, shifts in desire, hormonal readjustment levels and increasingly androgynous states of being, impact our expectations of womanhood as we grow older. I was also curious to understand what changes manifest with this proximity to ageing and changing perceptions of beauty. I thought at the time that these works were dealing specifically with the post-reproductive phase of women’s life but as I continue to think about the climate urgency I realise that this curiosity about the aging body is linked to thinking about the earth, its waning capacity to reproduce at all costs and our need to think about the end of life, both human and planetary.” Excerpt from curatorial statement. “Linhas Tortas is a multi-venue international group exhibition that celebrates the entanglements of journeys and the power of storytelling, marking a decade of Mendes Wood DM. Inspired by the Brazilian aphorism “deus escreve certo por linhas tortas”, which literally translates to “god writes straight with crooked lines” and metaphorically to “god works in mysterious ways”, the show follows complex trails (of thought and of life) that unfold when one sets off with intention but without an end in sight. It takes paths that are not driven by expediency or efficiency, not optimized by supply and demand, but rather ones that avoid the many shortcuts blazed by capitalist and/or colonial forces to better the few at the expense of the many. It questions who had the right to write history, and posits new ways to (re)inscribe profound perspectives and systems of being that were deliberately obscured from view.” Photo by Gui Gomes Courtesy of the Artist and Mendes Wood DM São Paulo, Brussels, New York

SUGGESTIONS ARE LISTED BELOW MONOCHROME/BLACK & WHITE Monochrome photography has always been a beloved genre of photography. The existence of only one- color functions as an incentive that unlocks feelings and leads viewers to new paths of realization. Almost everything has been shot in Monochrome, presenting a different aspect of the same subject as Monochrome images are not direct renditions of their subjects, but are abstractions from reality. Black and white photography as well as sepia and brown hued images are welcome to be submitted. FINE ART It stands in contrast to representational photography, which provides a visual account of specific subjects and events. It is the way photographers see the world around them and communicate it to their viewers. It’s a totally Submissions will begin on November 18th. Entries must be submitted no later than November 25h, 2023. Members may submit up to three images to the curator of which up to two may be selected for the exhibition. Notification of the selection of work will be emailed by the 30th of November. personal way of expression, which helps all of us realize what happens in the mind of a photographer. It is our window to the artist’s world and that is why it is so fascinating. STREET PHOTOGRAPHY Urban environment is the perfect set for Street Photography. People moving around the city are the subjects of the photographers. Most of the photographs are candid and spontaneous. No one cares if the image is sharp or blurred, colored or black and white. Everything that matters is the atmosphere of the city and the depiction of everyday life. LANDSCAPE It is a genre many photographers like and are willing to travel all over the world just to depict places that are out of the ordinary. Some of the most beautiful and impressive places on earth. There are breathtaking photographs taken by both amateur and professional photographers, of places totally untouched by the human hand and others where the human element exists in harmony with nature. All kinds of landscapes are welcome to take part.

PORTRAITS People and their expressions have always been an interesting subject for photographers. It is really challenging to try to capture the emotions and the mood of a person in just one shot. It is also always interesting to see what the photographers see of the people they have photographed. This relationship is always interesting to be seen as it is developed through “Portraits”. WILDLIFE/ANIMALS Wild animals’ photographs, taken in their natural habitat, in different areas of the planet, showing the beauty hidden in wildlife, is something we have totally forgotten in the western world. What is dominant in these photos is the photographers’ love for what they are doing. This love and understanding of the animals is obvious in the way the animals are presented, in all their glory and beauty, leaving the viewer speechless. Such photographs are always welcome in this category. ABSTRACT Abstract photography is a means of depicting an image that does not have an immediate association with the object world. It can isolate a fragment in order to create something unreal from a real object. It’s main purpose is to convey a feeling, a sensation or an impression. It draws away from natural appearances and recognizable subjects in the actual world. MACRO By some definitions, a macro photograph refers to a finished photograph of a subject at greater than life size. Macro photography encourages the photographer to take a closer look. It enables the shooter to search harder for minute subject matter and to make everyday objects appear extraordinary. Also, it gives people the opportunity to discover new worlds, totally unseen to the naked eye.

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is pleased to feature works by the talented Peter Brathwaite in the exhibition 'Rediscovering Black Portraiture’. As a performer and artist of Barbadian descent, Peter Brathwaite’s celebrated work goes beyond mere representation. By centering the stories and experiences of Black figures that have been historically marginalized or erased, he challenges conventional narratives and calls attention to the social and political concerns that surround the portrayal of the global majority. Through Peter’s reimagined portraits and his personal connection to Barbados, this exhibition provides an opportunity to confront historical injustices, challenge established narratives, and foster meaningful dialogue. Join us on this artistic journey that reshapes history, unravels truths, and sparks vital discussions. Let's celebrate the power of art to inspire change!

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. “Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather

Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
