Visualartsbarbadosevents
The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

Barbados Photographic Society
President of the Barbados Photographic Society, Bradley Benskin, is optimistic about the future of the association and looks forward to further developing established alliances with regional associations.
In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the society has mounted an exhibition titled 20 Years Of Light at the Queen's Park Gallery which opened on Saturday evening and runs until February 10. About 46 pieces by 25 photographers are on display in various mediums inclusive of canvas, paper, acrylic, mental satin paper, and silk. The exhibition, curated by Giselle Walker, is divided into three sub-categories: mixed media, 16x16 canvas prints and the virtual Bajan Life, their November 2023 exhibition.
In an interview with the DAILY NATION after the opening ceremony, the president said there are "approximately 40 registered and paid-up members. On Facebook we have a following of about 16 000 people and there are varying degrees of activities throughout the year. We have a lot of associate members, and we also have some honorary members". He noted the purpose of the society is three-fold with its main goal being to foster the creative development and promotion of photography in Barbados.
"There's also a teaching and educational element so we teach the principles of photography, which are the science and art, the technical or physical side behind photography such as how to use the camera. We also do the artistic side which is the creative eye. We teach photographers how to see light, in other words, how to see your photograph and how to make photographs.
"We span a wide range of genres. We do portraiture, astral, food, architecture, still life, and street photography. There are members in the society who have all specialised in the various areas and those are the ones who come back and teach. We also have some people who we partner with from overseas and who may be coming to Barbados and reach out.”
"We recently formed an alliance with the Trinidad and Tobago Photographic Society and the Jamaica Photography Society. There are partnerships like that we're fostering across the region and those members do help us with our training aspects," he said
Benskin mentioned the recently staged Caribbean Photo Walk, where photographers from each country went out at the same time on the same day and shot images based on the theme or topic selected in a stated time frame. That was followed by a three-day virtual symposium, part of which was a panel discussion and viewing.
And during his remarks as he welcomed people to the opening ceremony, he thanked all members who had a hand in the society as well as those who worked to mount the exhibition featuring the work of the photographers *who show Barbados as they see it", including things that no longer exist.
"We have to encourage each other to capture those moments because that moment is only a split second and it will forever be indelible and when somebody looks back 30 years from now, [they'll say, 'Oh, I remember that,' but it's only just a memory. Here's to 20 more years," he said to applause. The president also said the Barbados Photographic Society would not be around now, were it not for *three individuals 20 years ago", namely the founding members Ansley E. Weekes, Laura Rudder; and Leslie Taylor, who were thanked and recognised for their foresight in 2003, sterling contributions. and guidance through the years.
They formed what was then the Barbados Photography Club. Some years later, it evolved into what is now known as the Barbados Photographic Society," Benskin said. He also said he was looking forward to the next 20 years and to being at a future exhibition heralding another major milestone where he will congratulate the president then, saying, "Fantastic job’
‘Picture Perfect Night’
Scores of photographers, photography lovers and art enthusiasts headed to the Queen's Park Gallery, The City, last Saturday evening for the opening of the Barbados Photographic Society's 20th anniversary exhibition.
Titled ‘20 Years Of Light’, the display highlighted the images taken by members of the group ranging from chattel houses, fruit, people, the sea, birds and insects, topography in and outside of Barbados, to plants.
Giselle Walker is the curator of the exhibition which stemmed from an idea put forward by Sherlock Lord, the Society's treasurer.
After president Bradley Benskin delivered opening remarks and a presentation to the three founding members - Ansley E. Weekes, Laura Rudder and Leslie Taylor - guests viewed the photographs on the various mediums such as canvas, acrylic, paper and satin paper, chatted with the photographers, sharing their thoughts, before heading out to the terrace to grab a glass of wine or juice and some light refreshments.
One lucky patron went home with a Hugh Walker photograph after her number was pulled in the draw.
The exhibition ends on February 10.” (GBM) Nation News.

‘Excommunicado’ An exhibition by Saan Ross. Exploration of Isolation, Resilience, and the Quest for Belonging. (Date To be announced)
https://www.saanrose.com/
In "Excommunicado," the debut solo exhibition by SaanRose, the artist invites you to embark on a poignant journey through the realms of exclusion, resilience, and the eternal pursuit of belonging. Drawing from personal experiences of feeling like an outsider, the exhibition serves as a visceral exploration of the emotions and stories that unfold when one is cast adrift from the familiar.
Through a diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, photography, etc.., SaanRose delves deep into the complexities of human connection and disconnection. The title itself, "Excommunicado," resonates with the weight of exclusion, echoing themes of isolation that have colored the artist's narrative. Each piece in the collection serves as a brushstroke on the canvas of the artist's life, capturing the isolating moments that have shaped their perspective. The raw emotion embedded in every stroke or sculpture speaks to the universal human experience of yearning for connection.
"Excommunicado" boldly challenges societal norms, prompting viewers to question the boundaries that define inclusion and exclusion. The art becomes a mirror reflecting the arbitrary nature of these boundaries and the impact they have on individuals who exist on the fringes.
Amidst the shadows of exclusion, the exhibition celebrates resilience. Each piece embodies the strength found in adversity, showcasing the ability to rise above societal expectations and find one's voice even in the face of rejection.
With a nod to religious and symbolic themes, the exhibition weaves a narrative that resonates with historical and mythical tales of exile and redemption. The timeless stories echo through the art, offering a lens through which to interpret the complexities of modern-day exclusion.
"Excommunicado" is an invitation to reflect, connect, and recognize the shared human experience of navigating the delicate balance between isolation and the yearning for connection. As you wander through this collection, may you find echoes of your own journey and perhaps discover that, in the midst of isolation, there is a profound beauty in resilience and the pursuit of belonging.

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling. With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope
to help raise the standard of art and artists in
Barbados,
and eventually across the Caribbean.”

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
