The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas. The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts. Thank you for understanding. Corrie Scott

The National Cultural Foundation invites you to the opening reception of ‘Wear Your Art’ at Queen’s Park Gallery. Saturday December 9th, 7pm There will be a prize for the best worn art on the evening. The NCF will host the show during the Christmas season which discusses the intersection between art and function whilst highlighting the talent of our local designers and artists. We aim to provide a platform for a diverse audience to facilitate added sales for our talented creatives, whilst seeking to uplift the viewer and buyer and offer them alternative items to wear. Wearable Art blends Visual Arts, haute couture and slow fashion. It sits at the crossroads between craft, fashion and art. It is typified by quality and creativity. This will be a fluid exhibition set-up where we will allow buyers to take their pieces at the time of purchase if they so desire. We may therefore ask artists and designers to restock as needed. SHEENA ROSE WITH MARUANI MERCIER First opening at the gallery’s Brussels location, the exhibition will concurrently take place across the pond at London’s revered Saatchi Gallery featuring different artworks by the same participating artists that instigate an international dialogue. They say “History is Written by Victors” when it comes to the Black experience and the racism that often impacts it, the negative ramifications of this quote in relation to Colonialism and the Transatlantic slave trade have corrupted the full truth of Black history pre and post this deplorable era. Filling in the Pieces in Black aims to help redress this imbalance by bringing together a collection of some of the most talented artists of today, through the power of their visual storytelling we will Redefine the past, Refocus the present and Reshape the future. June Sarpong OBE has enjoyed a 20-year career, in which she has become one of the most recognisable faces of British television. June began her career at Kiss 100 and later became a presenter for MTV UK & Ireland. It was when she started on Channel 4’s T4 that she became a household name. In 2008 she hosted Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in front of 30,000 people in London’s Hyde Park. June has also interviewed and introduced some of the world’s biggest names including HRH Prince of Wales, Bill Clinton, Al Gore and George Clooney. She has worked extensively with HRH Prince Charles as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, whilst campaigning for The One and Produce (RED). June was later awarded an OBE in the 2020 New Years’ Honours List. June is the cofounder of the WIE Network (Women: Inspiration & Enterprise) and is a regular panellist on Sky News’ weekly current affairs discussion show, The Pledge, and the author of three award-winning books: Diversify: Six Degrees of Integration, The Power of Women, and The Power of Privilege. Winston Carloyde Yearwood “Cassius Clay”

“I’d like to say a few words about one of the most entertaining, kind, and likable people I have met since I started coming to Barbados every year. His name was Winston Carloyde Yearwood. A homeless street kid by the time he was 10, living on the docks, eating discarded produce, and carrying water for the workers for a few pennies, he learned to fight with the other boys for what little he had. His luck changed when the police finally sent him to the Government Reformatory school. For the first time he was part of a ‘family’ who educated and cared for him. After he left the school, he became a boxer. He won over 100 fights including international bouts. At home everyone started referring to him as ‘Cassius Clay’. Later he started performing feats of strength and stunts such as swallowing fire. He entertained at Harbour Lights for years and hosted fundraisers for kids. He painted local scenes, and he also became a tour guide which is how I met him. For the first few years that I came here, I was intent on learning everything I could about the island. I hired tour guides, some very informative, who enlightened me about the new water system installation, or the over-sale of sugar to Puerto Rico, or the offshore cement plant, and the incredible literacy rate of over 99% for the adult population, and some who didn’t speak at all and just chauffeured me to tourist destinations. Then I met Cassius and entered into the heart of the country. He drove down roads that didn’t actually exist to places not seen by many except locals. He told me about his island, his life, and his art. When I asked to see his artwork, he took me to a neat little house which belonged to his family and showed me some of his pictures. Here are 3 that were hanging on his walls and the fourth is in NY hanging on my wall. He was a beloved Barbadian. He died this past June.” Pam Hunt

In celebration of Independence 2023 and two years further down the road of being a Republic, Artists Alliance Barbados is encouraging artists to submit work on the theme of ‘Access’. Inspired by the excerpt (below) from HERITAGE VS CULTURE, an article written by Norma Springer in 2021. “We are late to recognize the beach as cultural heritage. In the 1970s Fr Andrew Hatch was warning us to guard against Barbados becoming an inner city with all the attendant social and economic chaos when we lose access to the beaches for escape and play. In our short-sightedness we heard but did not understand, and today as every window to the sea is closed and the sea is taking back the beach, we are again recycling talk about beach access. In reality we do have beach access – narrow, garbage shewn paths to take us down for a dip but we are not to linger as we do not have a place to unload chairs, cooler and pot of pelau from our cars, nor space to spread out, eat or play. These living experiences my friends are the result of the narrow thinking of de gatekeepers whether in de govment or in de parliament – that access is just an entryway. Access is an essentially contested concept in sociology but that does not prevent our policy makers setting the meaning for purpose. The lazy definition is entry into or use of – once de door open yah can go in, while the other approach looks at factors influencing entry or use that requires more effort from our policy makers and regulation controllers to consider how Bajans use the beach, how to preserved both entry and usage while sharing it wid de turists dem. De turists dem can spread out in dem beach chairs but Bajans got tah drawup by de high water mark policed by their own sons and daughters. Again, I acknowledge the works of our visual artists on beach access – Arlette St Hill’s installation at Queens Park Gallery Beach Access, (circa 2010), Therese Hadchidy curated exhibition Water (2019, Queens Park Gallery), and Annalee Davis with her video, Public Beach Access (circa 2012) and essay Beach as Plot (2020). Davis’s video shows her actually measuring the width of these access paths de govment made sure we have. There are many more artists across all forms and genres working to help us see, hear and understand the world around us, but alas!” We encourage you to not only explore questions of access to our beaches, but to cast your nets further and submit work that also looks at access to health, education, information, land, money and choice.” - Norma Springer

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is pleased to feature works by the talented Peter Brathwaite in the exhibition 'Rediscovering Black Portraiture’. As a performer and artist of Barbadian descent, Peter Brathwaite’s celebrated work goes beyond mere representation. By centering the stories and experiences of Black figures that have been historically marginalized or erased, he challenges conventional narratives and calls attention to the social and political concerns that surround the portrayal of the global majority. Through Peter’s reimagined portraits and his personal connection to Barbados, this exhibition provides an opportunity to confront historical injustices, challenge established narratives, and foster meaningful dialogue. Join us on this artistic journey that reshapes history, unravels truths, and sparks vital discussions. Let's celebrate the power of art to inspire change!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online. I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling. With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.” -Jeena Chatrani

Helping the young talent where we can. This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art. I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena. These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting. Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados. Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need. Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving. Please don’t add their names here. Private message me. Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression. OBJECTIVES of the NCF are: To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry Rodney Ifill, Cultural Officer Visual Arts 424-0909 ext.234 rodney-ifill@ncf.bb www.ncf.bb Annette Nias Cultural Officer - Film and Photography 424-0909 Ext 238 annette-nias@ncf.bb

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.” Dan Rather
