Student Support‌ Helping you think outside the box The staff in Campus Services provides a clear point of contact for students and help by giving impartial help, advice and guidance. You will find the Campus Services office near the reception area of each campus. In particular staff in the Campus Services offices can help with queries regarding enrolment on courses, fees, grants and other financial help. Specially trained Welfare Officers are also available to help and advise you with any personal and practical problems.

Support for Students with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities Is provided by one of the specialists in the Student Support Services team. They make all reasonable efforts to ensure that any student or potential student is not disadvantaged by their disability. Tell us about any specific requirements as early on in your application process as possible, everything will be treated sensitively and used to prepare your Individual Support Plans.

Voices and Views The Student Parliament plays an active part in improving the college by representing the students on all aspects of college life. Affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS) it provides a forum for students to discuss issues affecting them, with members of the Parliament representing students on various groups and committees including the Governing Body. Each campus has its own Student Parliament; they then elect members onto the whole college Student Parliament.

The Learning Centres (LCs) are the hubs of activity open to all students providing study space and a wide range of resources from computer based material, print (books and journals) to microfilms and interactive learning packages. Computers, Smart boards and other hardware are available for ‘in class’ work and for students to prepare presentations and project/course work submissions.

Coleg Morgannwg holds many awards for good and outstanding practice including the Investors in People Award (IIP), the Welsh Assembly Government Basic Skills Quality Standard and the Green Dragon Award. The college has also recently achieved the following:

Coleg Morgannwg wins national education award

College wins ‘Most Improved Organisation’ Award

Coleg Morgannwg celebrated after winning one of the UK’s most prestigious awards for its outstanding contribution to further education. The college scooped the Edge Award for Practical Teaching and Practical Learning for its costume construction in theatre and screen foundation degree.

Coleg Morgannwg won The Prize for the Most Improved Organisation, sponsored by SONY UK TEC at a Gala Dinner and Awards evening at City Hall in Cardiff attended by dignitaries from across the private and public sector. The Award was presented by Mr Steve Dalton, MD of SONY UK TEC, for demonstrating year on year improvements across all aspects of the organisation’s operations looking at a minimum of three year trends. It also assesses the distance travelled by organisations against other benchmarks/standards such as Investors in People, Green Dragon Environmental Standards etc.

The Association of Colleges Beacon awards recognise colleges providing excellent practical teaching that results in students having learning experiences that are real, meaningful, challenging and life-changing. The UK-wide Beacon Awards provide national recognition for excellence and innovation as well as acknowledging the talents of staff at all levels. They highlight the breadth and quality of education in the college sector. The college has strong links with theatre and film production companies and won the award for the course which was developed to meet an industry need for higher level practical skills in costume construction. During the course students produce costumes for theatre and screen productions and benefit from working alongside professionals in theatre, dance, screen and opera companies. Most students go on to complete the full BA degree programme in costume construction at university, while the remaining students take up jobs in London’s West End or go on to work in the television and film industries. Peter Mitchell, interim CEO of independent education foundation, Edge, said: “Coleg Morgannwg showcases the importance of providing students with high quality educational routes and this project highlights the successful future such an approach can give to young people. I congratulate them on their Award and hope they continue to lead the way for other Colleges across the UK.” Coleg Morgannwg were presented with their award by John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, at a national presentation ceremony in Westminster.

President’s Award On top of this Coleg Morgannwg also picked up the Association of Colleges’ President’s Award at the ceremony. The College was chosen from 17 AoC Beacon Award winners as an outstanding example of achievement in further education by the President of the AoC Charitable Trust, Lord Willis of Knaresborough. Lord Willis chose Coleg Morgannwg as the winner because he was impressed with the scope and ambition of the course.

Winning this prestigious Wales Quality Award is an accolade for any business and the college is proud of its achievement.

Silver Corporate Health Award Representatives from Coleg Morgannwg attended the ‘Healthy Working Wales’ award presentations in Port Talbot to collect the Silver Corporate Health Award. The college is only the second college to be granted this level of award. The Corporate Health Standard is the national mark of quality for health and well being in the workplace. Any workplace that has adopted practices to improve employee health and well being can apply. The standard is a continuous journey of good practice and improvement, and it can be used as a tool to support the development of policies that promote the heath and well being of employees. The standard has been developed to recognise good practice and to target the key preventable ill-health issues. The promotion of Health and Well Being has become an integral part of the Colleges core values and has included the setting up of a Health and Well Being group which has run initiatives such as Breast Cancer Awareness, No Smoking Day, Stress Awareness and the Health Challenge “28 days around Coleg Morgannwg”. The College will be continuing on this journey and hopes to achieve Gold or even Platinum. Other sessions have also included awareness sessions on Cervical Cancer, Testicular Cancer and Musculoskeletal Disorders.

Coleg Morgannwg helps three unfulfilled sisters get the career bug Three sisters from Pontypridd who found themselves unfulfilled with their jobs, signed up for the same college course on the same day and are now looking forward to brighter futures. Bethan Edwards, 27, Rhianydd Edwards, 25, and Zoe Najian, 19 embarked on the Access to Humanities course at Coleg Morgannwg to improve their future career prospects. Bethan, previously a stay-at-home mum thought university would never be an option. At school, she didn’t complete GCSEs because she had epilepsy which made her so ill that she had to leave school at 15. At Coleg Morgannwg Bethan has been able to complete her GCSEs as well as an OCN in Humanities. Zoe, who was previously working on a production line at a factory, is also working towards the OCN. Both Bethan and Zoe hope to go to university next year after completing the Diploma to become primary school teachers. Rhianydd, who was working in a bar before she started at the college already had AS Levels so was able to bypass the OCN course and go straight onto the Diploma course. Would-be support worker Rhianydd is studying Supportive Housing at Cardiff University. Bethan said: “We all found ourselves really de-motivated and unfulfilled in what we were doing with our lives. So when we heard about Coleg Morgannwg’s open day we thought we’d go along and see what they had to offer. When we realised how easy it could be to get some qualifications, we instantly signed up and haven’t looked back since. “I’m so pleased that I’ve been given a second chance to do my GCSEs and Coleg Morgannwg has been really supportive in helping me achieve my goals. Also my daughter goes to the college crèche which is a big help, and it’s reassuring knowing that she is so close.”

Still not sure come and have a chat at our HE Information Day - 26th May 2011

Karen Stagg Karen Stagg successfully completed the Access to Health Professions Diploma in July 2010 after studying two evenings a week, over two years. Karen’s first hurdle was to overcome a tumour of the thyroid gland, which left her feeling very tired and lethargic. Karen had to undergo surgery to remove her thyroid gland but she still kept up with her coursework deadlines (a task that is daunting at the best of times). Karen had to take hormones to supplement those normally produced by the thyroid gland and was not overly concerned when she developed headaches, even though they were often crippling. After investigation, she was diagnosed with a rare, debilitating and progressive condition called Arnold-Chiari Syndrome. This is a skull abnormality, whereby the skull is too small to accommodate the brain, as a result, the brain bulges out at the base of the skull and compresses the spinal cord. Arnold-Chiari Syndrome quickly became ‘that Arnold’ and Karen even joked that it wasn’t her skull that was too small but her brain had grown bigger since starting the Access course! Not many students would cope with the conditions Karen has had to endure. Her determination and drive to become a nurse has been the impetus that has maintained Karen’s focus over the past year – her attendance record is testimony to this and she even came to college the day after having her thyroid gland removed! After completing her course Karen has gained a much sought after place at the University of Glamorgan and is now studying a BN in Mental Health.

Barbara Protheroe Barbara Protheroe is a visually impaired student studying with the part-time computer group. She came to the college in September to improve her e-mail and Internet skills, which she felt would help her with her work with SIDS (Sensory Impairment Drop-in Scheme) which she runs from the Children’s Centre in Rhydyfelin. The aim of the group is to provide support for people or their families who are experiencing sight loss. She is also involved in raising awareness of visual impairment, the issues people with sight loss face within the local community and the support available. Barbara also runs a Guides group which she has done for a number of years and previously taught Braille in the community. She is someone who does not let her blindness prevent her from doing things or supporting others who are in a similar position to herself. Barbara was recently awarded the Above and Beyond winner and overall winner in the RCT International Women’s Day ceremony. She really is an inspiration to everyone!

An interview with Elen Thomas Production Arts-Make-up student What made you choose Coleg Morgannwg? I was advised by a friend, who was a student at Coleg Morgannwg at the time, that the lecturer they had was an industry professional, and could therefore impart knowledge straight from the industry itself, rather than them coming from a non industry back ground. Also from researching, it felt like the best 'all rounder' course of this nature.

What would you say your highlights were from your time there? I have to be honest, the highlight was and still is the lecturer Jane Beard, she's a perfect teacher, she knows her stuff, and teaches it brilliantly, I still keep in touch with her, and if I ever need any tips she's always happy to help. I honestly can't praise her enough.

How did it prepare you for such a competitive industry? It gives you all the basics that you need to go in to the industry at a trainee level, although you still need to do a fair bit of work and practicing at home, it takes a lot of determination and self motivation to do well.

What is your personal career highlight? Every job is exciting and different, I've been on many large and small, film and television sets, I get to meet interesting and fun people, and I get to do a job I love. It doesn't get much better than that!

Wealth of experience helps students Jane Beard studied A Level Sciences at her local Grammar School, destined to follow in the academic footsteps of her family. However she soon realised that this wasn’t the career path she wanted and changed her studies to Humanities and Art. She secured a place on a 3- year college course and on completion, was accepted at the BBC Makeup Training School, London. Following this training Jane was fortunate to secure employment at BBC Wales; where she worked for 13 years on a variety of programmes including Light entertainment, Children’s programmes and dramas. With a young family, Jane chose to stay in Wales and for the past 17 years has worked as a Freelance make-up artist; some of her recent projects include Dr Who, Torchwood and Young Victoria. Jane’s involvement with the college began when she was asked to ‘cover’ the National Certificate in Production Arts (Make-up) course at the Rhondda Campus for one week – she’s still teaching the course 3 years later! Jane said “I really enjoy my work and have been fortunate to have worked on varied projects, meeting some very interesting people. I find lecturing at Coleg Morgannwg very rewarding, the students have such talent and enthusiasm and four have already been accepted on courses at Grimsby, Somerset, Bournemouth and also a Special Effects course in London. It’s been good to share my experiences with the students, hopefully it will give them an insight into the industry and the opportunities that lie ahead of them”.

Donna has recently successfully completed the HNC in Management and Business along with the Foundation Degree in Management and Business at Coleg Morgannwg. Besides being in full-time employment and having a busy family life with teenagers in tow, Donna has always shown herself to be a committed, enthusiastic and hardworking student within our parttime cohort and has gained some excellent results to her credit . Donna has now progressed onto the BA Honours Degree in Management and Business at the University of Glamorgan where she has been gaining some excellent results in the modules she is studying.

Tracy Pearce Due to family circumstances and a few set-backs Tracy found herself at home lacking in confidence and motivation. When a friend suggested enrolling on a college course Tracy was reluctant but after some consideration realised she needed to do something for her future. Tracy visited the college and spoke to IT Tutor Rhian Morris, who advised her of the courses available at the college and the career paths they could lead to. Despite her anxieties Tracy took the step and enrolled on the NVQ Administration and Office IT course. She said “At first I was really nervous but Rhian was an inspiration to me, with her support I finished the course and gained the confidence to seek employment. I am now employed at Securitas Security and looking forward to the future; I wouldn’t have achieved this without Rhian’s patience and understanding – she is a fabulous tutor and gives 110% commitment to her students. 15

Carol-Ann Bennett has just completed her NVQ Level 3 at Coleg Morgannwg Pontypridd and started work at Bauhaus Aveda in Cardiff. She attended the college for 3 years, she began her hairdressing programme as a Part Time Evening student and completed NVQ level 1 & 2 Hairdressing. During the third year she became a full time student and completed her NVQ level 3 Hairdressing and Customer Service Level 3. Carol-Ann took every opportunity to participate in hair competitions and hair showcase events alongside promoting her abilities at fashion shoots. She applied for the BaByliss Pro Style Gallery competition 2010 which is worldwide, which she went on to win. Her prize was to attend Salon International and work alongside Patrick Cameron (a celebrity Hairdresser and Guru of long hairdressing), Adam Reed and the crew at Salon International and the Babyliss Hair Team for the three days of the event. Salon International is a massive event attended by hairdressers from all over the world.

From Selling to Styling Stephen Lewis always had a passion for hairdressing but on leaving school found himself in the Sales market, selling mobile phones. He soon realised this was not for him and when a friend asked for his help in his hair salon, he jumped at the chance. He enjoyed the basic tasks in the salon and realising Stephen’s potential his friend recommended the hairdressing course at Coleg Morgannwg, he enrolled on the course and has progressed to his current course, the Level 3. Stephen said “Due to the pressures of the placement, at one point I came close to throwing the towel in; being a junior in a salon isn’t easy! But with the support of the staff at Coleg Morgannwg, especially my tutor Anne Hopkins, I stuck at it and have come out the other end more confident about myself and my capabilities. The college recently entered a competition, with entries from colleges and salons, from all over Wales. The standard was extremely high and I was really pleased to take 2nd place for my Male haircut and 3rd place for my Female cut; the college were awarded 1st place in the Overall Team. I am so glad that I took that initial step and enrolled at Coleg Morgannwg, I’ve never looked back!”

Students help patients Students at Coleg Morgannwg have participated in a number of fundraising activities, including the provision of therapeutic treatments to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre. Further collaboration has developed a work placement opportunity which contributes to a variety of environments for our learners to gain experience in the provision of both beauty and complementary therapies. Helen Tyler, Therapy Services Manager at Velindre Cancer Centre, recognises the benefits observed on the wards, she says “Something which sums up how the patients feel is 'It’s a treat not a treatment'

Complementary Success Angela Green, a former student, says “I thoroughly enjoyed studying for the HND Complementary Therapies and particularly liked the mix of different therapies as it gave me a broad foundation to build on. My focus was always for the clinical setting and I started working at Velindre Cancer Centre on my work placement during my studies. Six years later, I hold the position of Clinical Lead in Complementary Therapies in a busy department at Velindre, and gain tremendous satisfaction from using my therapies for the benefit and support of patients, carers and staff.”

www.morgannwg.ac.uk 18

Lecturer with a wealth of Experience Coleg Morgannwg lecturer Nicola Davies runs a highly successful Beauty Salon and provides a wealth of practical, retail and marketing knowledge that she is only too happy for students to draw upon. Her salon has won Innovative Salon of the Year on more than one occasion and been nominated for Regional Salon of the Year. Nicola also writes a column in a regional magazine providing beauty advice and reviews of the latest developments affecting the Beauty Industry. She prides herself on providing the ultimate professional experience for clients and this passion for customer service is passed onto students during her practical client sessions at the college which students feel invaluable in bringing real life experience to their college learning experience. After all, in an industry that is so hands on it takes more than just theory to create an excellent beauty therapist.

We are a dynamic progressive curriculum area, whose focus is to ensure that you have the best possible teaching and learning experience. Hairdressing, Beauty and Complementary offers a career portfolio that is extensive and varied. We will ensure that you will achieve qualifications, skills and qualities that will equip you for a diverse exciting and rewarding professional career within the ever evolving wellbeing sector.

I’m really enjoying the course”

Michael Cude Following a career change fifteen years ago from the private sector to the public service sector, Mike entered local government as a Recreation Officer within the Environmental Services Group. This is one of four groups within the Council, all of which provides services within Rhondda Cynon Taf to approximately 234,000 people. His appointment was at a newly built leisure facility within Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and during the first three years Mike progressed through the organisational structure to a position of Junior Manager. An opportunity became available for a more senior position within the service area, which Mike was successful in obtaining. For the last 12 years, Mike has been employed as a Principal Manager for Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council. To help facilitate career enhancement, Mike emphasises that Coleg Morgannwg has been an essential support mechanism and a key motivating factor to enable him to fulfil the many duties necessitated of his role within the organisation. An example of this is the recent NVQ level 4 Business Management with which Mike had continuing support from the course appointed assessor. The NVQ Level 4 Business Management fitted in well with my own career and the curriculum emphasis was on areas such as: strategy planning and financial management which he found very interesting. Mike states that this course has increased his confidence and motivation. On completion of the NVQ level 4 Business Management, Mike felt such pride in acknowledging this achievement; this motivated him further to pursue further studies. He discussed options with his assessor. Mike is currently in the second year of a distance learning MA in Business Management at the University of Glamorgan. Mike states that this was unthinkable only a couple of years ago. Mike is an avid supporter of the college and has stated that he continually praises and promotes the College to other Community Centre users. He highlights to them the benefits he personally has received, via the help and support given through the Coleg Morgannwg community learning programmes delivered at Waen Wen Community Centre. Mike recently received an award in the College’s Prize Ceremony for his hard work and commitment.

David Griffiths – A Learner’s Experience My name is David Griffiths. I returned to education with Workchoices in 2006, so that I could help my children with their school work and also to improve my handwriting and spelling. At first I was afraid to walk through the door and ask any questions regarding any courses. Luckily for me, I did pluck up enough courage and walk through the door and I quickly enrolled. I really enjoyed the course. The lecturers gave me lots of support with my numeracy and literacy. I hadn’t realised how poor my skills had become. I was over the moon when I attained City and Guilds Qualifications in English and Maths. With the help and support from all lecturers I was nominated for the Dennis Davies’ Student Award which I won. I was grateful to the lecturers who had shown such confidence in me. Since I enrolled on the Workchoices course my confidence and self-esteem have improved 100%. Now with my new found confidence I am able to attend the main campus in Aberdare and enrolled on a two year course in IT. While doing the IT course, myself and my family have won “Family NIACE INSPIRE AWARD”, which was a very proud day for us all. I am currently doing a two year Access to Humanities course with Coleg Morgannwg, which hopefully takes me to university to gain a degree. I would like to thank everyone on the Workchoices course for giving me the opportunity to achieve my wishes.

Rosemary Brown “My name is Rosemary Brown I am 52 yrs of age, I left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications. I started going to the Waun Wen Resource Centre 11yrs ago. 8 yrs ago I had to fill in a C.V. and when I glanced over the C.V. I noticed how empty it looked compared to everyone else’s and I felt quite embarrassed. That is when I decided to enroll on community courses with Coleg Morgannwg. Through the lack of confidence I only enrolled on craft courses, though by doing these courses my confidence grew and this motivated me to go further. I then enrolled onto a computer course for beginners which when finished; I felt that for the first time in my life I could better myself! I then completed level 1and 2 in word processing - not bad I thought when I couldn’t even work a calculator! I was then asked if I would like to do a NVQ 2 in Administration which I successfully completed - feeling really pleased with myself! I am now doing NVQ 3 in Administration and NVQ 2 in Community Development simultaneously which I hope will develop my career prospects for the future. When I think back on that empty C.V. , I am really proud of myself and with my self esteem ever growing I will have to fill in 2 pages next time I have to fill in a C.V. ! It just goes to prove you are not too old to learn - not bad for a grandmother of three.”

Learning Gives Heather the Ingredients for Success Five years ago, Heather Loveridge, a single parent in her 40’s from Glyncoch, was unemployed, had no qualifications and lacked in confidence. Roll forward to the present day and Heather, along with her sister Sian, now own a successful café and catering business, The Giant’s Bite, based opposite Pontypridd YMCA in the town centre. Heather’s journey to this stage in her life has taken some time but this is the reward she has earned for her commitment, drive and enthusiasm through adult learning. Over the past five years, Heather has completed numerous courses within her local community, supported by the Glyncoch Communities First Partnership. Just some of these include a ‘Get Cooking’ tutors course, a City & Guilds in Community Tutoring, a Community Regeneration Module with the University of Glamorgan and Basic Skills with Coleg Morgannwg. Heather has also been an invaluable volunteer to Glyncoch by supporting with events, supporting the start of a Depression Busting group, has run her own 15 week cooking course for other members of the community and recently took the role of Administrator for the recent Adult Learners Week for the whole of Rhondda Cynon Taf, all on a voluntary basis. These are just a few examples of the activities that Heather has participated in to achieve her dream of owning her own catering business. “Adult learning and volunteering has made a world of difference to me. It has given me new skills, new friends and confidence and I enthuse anyone to get involved in learning, whatever the age.” Said Heather.

Treorchy partnership - Group Profile The groups were set up in January 2010 after meetings with Treorchy Jobcentre and Treorchy library. The Jobcentre wanted a group for clients to extend their ICT skills in an environment away from the Jobcentre. The college had previously offered basic skills groups in the Jobcentre so a good relationship already existed. The Skills for Lifelong Learning department had already established a successful partnership with Treorchy library and they were happy to provide the venue for the new venture. The referrals and involvement of the Jobcentre staff in the project have always been consistent and committed. A member of staff from the Jobcentre was released to support the groups and this worked well as they were able to expand the course to include, jobseeking skills, CV writing and job search. The library supported the project by providing a welcoming environment, free resources and a place away from the Jobcentre. The retention and attainment of the learners was excellent 100% attainment, 88% retention, 88% successful completion. The group is also successful in progressing learners – the main progression route is Skillbuild at the college and a number of learners who complete the course at Treorchy library go on to join the Full-time Work Based Learning Skillbuild course. Other learners have continued onto the next course to extend their education whilst a small number of learners have gone on to employment. The success of the project is largely due to the commitment of the three main partners to provide quality education in the community. 25
