How can a College of Further Education offer Higher Education courses? Many students particularly those who wish to study part-time find it difficult and inconvenient to travel to study. For this reason many colleges of Further Education now offer Higher Education (HE) courses through partnerships with Universities. Coleg Morgannwg works in partnership with a number of Higher Educational establishments so that Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas and Certificates are available on your doorstep. The College has a long term working relationship with its partner HE institutions. Over the years many hundreds of students have chosen the convenience of becoming a University Student at their local college whilst still having access to the facilities at the University of study. Will the course I study be the same as the one offered at the University? Yes, the courses delivered at Coleg Morgannwg are designed by and are identical to those offered at the University. On successful completion of your course your graduation will be at the University. Higher Education partnerships Coleg Morgannwg are working closely with UHOVI (Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute) to offer a range of courses. This includes a number of Foundation Degrees, especially designed to provide relevant skills and knowledge for the region’s existing or growing industries. College Achievements Coleg Morgannwg holds many awards for good and outstanding practice including the Investors in People Award (IIP), the Welsh Government Basic Skills Quality Standard and the Green Dragon Award. The college has also recently achieved the following: Coleg Morgannwg wins national education award Coleg Morgannwg celebrated after winning one of the UK’s most prestigious awards for its outstanding contribution to further education. The college scooped the Edge Award for Practical Teaching and Practical Learning for its costume construction in theatre and screen foundation degree. The Association of Colleges Beacon awards recognise colleges providing excellent practical teaching that results in students having learning experiences that are real, meaningful, challenging and life-changing. The UK-wide Beacon Awards provide national recognition for excellence and innovation as well as acknowledging the talents of staff at all levels. They highlight the breadth and quality of education in the college sector. The college has strong links with theatre and film production companies and won the award for the course which was developed to meet an industry need for higher level practical skills in costume construction. During the course students produce costumes for theatre and screen productions and benefit from working alongside professionals in theatre, dance, screen and opera companies. Most students go on to complete the full BA degree programme in costume construction at university, while the remaining students take up jobs in London’s West End or go on to work in the television and film industries. Peter Mitchell, interim CEO of independent education foundation, Edge, said: “Coleg Morgannwg showcases the importance of providing students with high quality educational routes and this project highlights the successful future such an approach can give to young people. I congratulate them on their Award and hope they continue to lead the way for other Colleges across the UK.” On top of this Coleg Morgannwg also picked up the Association of Colleges’ President’s Award at the ceremony. The College was chosen from 17 AoC Beacon Award winners as an outstanding example of achievement in further education by the President of the AoC Charitable Trust, Lord Willis of Knaresborough. Lord Willis chose Coleg Morgannwg as the winner because he was impressed with the scope and ambition of the course. College wins ‘Most Improved Organisation’ Award Coleg Morgannwg won The Prize for the Most Improved Organisation in Wales, sponsored by SONY UK TEC at a Gala Dinner and Awards evening at City Hall in Cardiff attended by dignitaries from across the private and public sector. The Award was presented by Mr Steve Dalton, MD of SONY UK TEC, for demonstrating year on year improvements across all aspects of the organisation’s operations looking at a minimum of three year trends. It also assesses the distance travelled by organisations against other benchmarks/standards such as Investors in People, Green Dragon Environmental Standards etc. Winning this prestigious Wales Quality Award is an accolade for any business and the college is proud of its achievement.

Top performing colleges and learners awarded At a glittering ceremony at the Hilton Hotel Cardiff, outstanding learners and teachers were recognised as the top performers across colleges in Wales and seven colleges were awarded for driving improvements that benefit learners. ColegauCymru’s Annual Awards recognise outstanding achievements by learners, teachers and colleges and the quality of submissions for the ColegauCymru Awards 2011 was notably high. The judging panels were very impressed, noting that the colleges had “raised the bar” this year. Coleg Morgannwg picked up the award for Effective Leadership in the Delivery of Skills. Dr John Graystone, ColegauCymru Chief Executive, said: “Congratulations to all the winners. These awards ensure that best practice is properly recognised. The awards are also central to colleges’ continual efforts to raise standards across the board by learning from the best. The ColegauCymru Awards 2011 not only benefit learners but also have a clear value to a wide range of highlyrespected national organisations. Coleg Morgannwg leading the way for a healthier and happier Wales Coleg Morgannwg has become the first further education college in Wales to receive a prestigious award for its high standards of health and well-being. The college has been working hard to maintain and improve the health and well-being of its staff and has been awarded the Gold Corporate Health Standard by the Welsh Government. After receiving the silver standard last year, Coleg Morgannwg has continued its commitment to creating an ideal working environment for its 500 staff. The college has been commended for the range of health and well-being interventions that have been implemented, such as promoting healthy eating across all campuses and supplying staff with a supportive return to work process. Student Achievements

Dressing the stars of stage and screen Samantha Jones and Kate Barton have put to good use the industry contacts they made while studying for the Foundation Degree in Costume Construction for Screen and Stage at the college. As part of her studies, Kate was placed with prestigious companies on work experience, including four months as costume maker/assistant on the BBC’s Young Dracula and a live project with the Welsh National Youth Opera production Maisey Day. Since leaving college she has been working full time at the Welsh National Opera as a costume maker on shows such as La Traviata, Madame Butterfly and Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg. Samantha’s work experience included working alongside the costume designer for Theatre Mappa Mundi’s The Importance of being Earnest, working professionally on tour for Theatre Na n’Og as a wardrobe assistant. She graduated in 2009 and believes the course gave her the skills and confidence to go directly into the industry. Samantha chose the freelance route and has collected an impressive list of credits for her costume work, including the Sound of Music, Les Miserables and Hairspray. She has worked for the Wales Millennium Centre and the Birmingham Royal Ballet and was the costume designer on the feature film Masterpiece, which shot to fame this year. Samantha also makes and alters bridal dresses and is in the process of setting up her own business. She said “I’m loving what I am doing and am already set up with work for the next couple of years!”

Gareth Jones is delivering up success “It had been some years since I had left school without many qualifications. I decided that after 18 years as a postman I wanted a career, not just for myself but to also inspire my children to go to University. I attended Coleg Morgannwg during 2003 to study Access to Science. The teaching staff were fantastic, supporting my learning and guiding me through what seemed the complicated process of finding a degree course and applying to University. I was awarded the Jane Hodge student award during 2004 which gave me confidence in my ability after so many years away from education. I gained a place on a 4 year Degree and started in 2006 and completed my Degree in 2010 gaining first class Honours. Following this I decided to pursue a career in teaching, and after getting a place on a PGCE course I returned to Morgannwg for some of my teaching practice during 2011. This year I have been accepted to further pursue my career beginning a 3 year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research Degree at Glamorgan University. My time at Coleg Morgannwg has given me a second chance, to achieve something more, and crucially the confidence to “Go for it”, if I can do it anyone can! I never thought that I would get a Degree and now I’m starting a PhD.”

I hoped to go back to university and it has allowed me to study again while teaching and bringing up our family. It’s a brilliant way of bringing high quality higher education into valleys communities”.

Constructing his future Nicholas Clements is the first student to benefit from a work placement at the new Taf Ely Learning Campus project at Nantgarw.
