Black History Month

Black History Month originated in 1926 by Dr. Carter Woodson, who chose February to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, both born in February. Frederick Douglass, an American social reformer and statesman, was fond of saying, “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”

Ms. Chisholm represented New York’s 12th Congressional District for seven terms until 1983; was the first major-party black candidate for US President; and the first woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. “Queen Bessie” Coleman was a daredevil barnstormer pilot who was the first black female pilot and the first African American to hold an international pilot license. Valerie Sokol brings these unique women to life through drama, love letters and poetry. Share with her their passion, pathos and humor. Date: Thu, Mar 10 Time: 7:00pm Fee: $5
