Museum Exhibitions Erle Stanley Gardner’s Baja December - January 15, 2012 Erle Stanley Gardner’s love affair with Baja California began early. In grammar school, he was already studying maps of the sea coast of lower California. When he moved to Temecula in his late 40’s, the proximity of Mexico to his ranch made it easy to visit his love. He wrote seven books about his adventures in Baja, the first in 1947 and the last published months before his death in 1970. Join us for a look into Uncle Erle’s adventures in Baja and see why he loved the land and people of this wonderful place.

Tools of the Trade January 28 - April 1, 2012 Join us for a fun look at antique tools used in many trades. Learn how workers performed tasks before computers and electronics. You may see tools that have “stood the test of time” with very little improvement over the years or others that are not recognizable and show no clue of their use to the modern eye. Discover industrial, personal and home use tools. This will be a fun exhibit for the whole family.

Wine Country: From the Missions to Modern Day April 14 - June 17, 2012 In the early days, the sweet taste of Angelica was produced from the wine grapes brought to the valley by the Spanish missionaries. Temecula Wine Country is now a multimillion dollar industry, producing award winning wines and bringing tourists to our lovely valley. Take a look at the development of this local industry from the missions to modern day and discover how it has turned Temecula into a charming destination.

Vail Ranch Conservation

The Temecula Valley Museum is undertaking an extensive conservation effort to protect maps, documents and photographs recently donated to the Museum by Whitney Wilkinson. There are over 2,000 documents and photographs in this significant collection accumulated by the original owners of the Vail Ranch. The Ranch extended for 87,000 acres from the Santa Rosa Plateau to Vail Lake. The importance of this collection is reflected in the source and dates of the items. Many items date from the mid-1800’s and are unique and provide rare primary research opportunities. Vail Ranch was the dominant economic entity from its founding in 1905 to its sale in 1964. Temecula’s history is intertwined in these documents.

Black History Month

“You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.” Many in business have heard this bantered around the office, but do you know who originated this phrase? (Leroy) Edlridge Cleaver (1935-1998) in a speech given in San Francisco in 1968. This gentleman was a writer and activist who was a Black Panther leader in the 1960’s and achieved fame with his book Soul on Ice. A former militant, he changed his philosophy in the mid-1970’s and turned his focus to religion and other less controversial issues.

Women’s History Month

In 1848 a group of fearless women launched a grass-roots campaign aimed at winning the right to vote. They boldly declared that women are fundamentally equal to men and set about convincing the rest of the country that women deserved the right to vote. In 1911, California became the sixth state to allow women to vote. Today, a higher percentage of women vote than men, women’s college attendance is equal to men’s and as of 2010 women make up 51% of the workforce in the United States.

WHEN: Every NON-holiday Saturday (Subject to closure due to weather) TIME: 9:00am until 2:00pm WHERE: 25315 Jefferson Ave in Murrieta (N. of Murrieta Hot Springs Rd.) CR&R Inc. and the City of Temecula will be cosponsoring the bi-annual Citywide Clean-up one Saturday in the Spring. All City residents may dispose of e-waste, used motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, green waste, and bulky items. This service is free to Temecula residents. (ID is required). Event will be held at Chaparral High School between 8am and 2pm. For more information check the city website or contact Dale West in Community Development at (951) 694-6400.

Holiday Schedule Trash Pick-Up

On holidays your trash collection will be delayed by one day. If your normal trash day is Monday, your trash will be collected on Tuesday, etc. If your normal trash day is Friday, your trash will be collected on Saturday. Holidays will also affect the street sweeping schedule. If the holiday occurs on Saturday or Sunday, your trash collection & street sweeping services may not change. Holidays are New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Curbside Christmas tree pick-up begins the first trash pick-up after Christmas and continues for two weeks. Please make sure that trees are free of decorations and tinsel. Trees 6 feet or taller should be cut in half. Do not place in plastic bags. Place tree next to the green recycle barrel.

Street Sweeping

Please be a good neighbor and remember not to park on residential streets on trash pick-up day and street sweeping day. Residential streets are swept the day after trash pick-up day. Keeping vehicles off the streets on these days allows efficient trash collection and street sweeping. Observing this simple request helps keep all of Temecula’s neighborhoods looking their best!

Bulky Item Pick-Up

Reminder! City of Temecula residents are allowed two FREE bulky item pickups, including e-waste, annually. Please call CR&R at (800) 755-8112 and make arrangements in advance for the pick-up of these items.

Storm Drains

The City of Temecula would like to remind residents of the City’s storm water and pollution prevention requirements. When it rains, water flows from our streets and into our creeks. Flows then drain into the Santa Margarita River, which ultimately discharges into the Pacific Ocean. The City is committed to improving water quality by implementing programs that systematically reduce and eliminate pollutants from urban runoff before reaching our local creeks. Please join us in this commitment by considering some simple pollution prevention measures: • Use dry methods (raking, vacuuming, sweeping) for outdoor cleaning. • Use rags or powdered absorbents to clean up spills. • Dispose of pet waste, debris, and trash in trash bins, not in the gutter. • Use a mop instead of a hose to clean areas when water is needed. • Set irrigation timers to prevent over-watering. This runoff carries fertilizers, pesticides, and sediment into local creeks and harms their ecosystems. • Do not hose down driveways, sidewalks, or gutters. Other than rain water, it is illegal to send pollutants into our streets, gutters, storm drains, or any waterway. If you see an illegal discharge, please report it by calling us at 951-694-6411. To obtain additional information about the City’s water quality program and requirements, please visit our website.

TCSD Maintenance Division

The Maintenance Division is committed to ensuring an aesthetically pleasing and healthy city by providing safe, clean public areas. The Maintenance Program provides effective landscape and facility maintenance services to parks, slopes, medians, recreation facilities, and also oversees the repair and maintenance of arterial and neighborhood streetlights. If you have a streetlight out in your neighborhood, call the Community Services Department at 694-6480.
