Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still grab a little R&R. Road trip!

BY LORI CAPULLO If any state is ideal for a staycation, it’s Florida. Depending on how much time you’re willing to spend on the road, there are options sprinkled from north to south and east to west, and since “season” isn’t yet in full swing, there are deals to be had everywhere you look. We’ve organized some of our favorite options according to drive time — and each offers an experience guaranteed to revitalize and rejuvenate, whether you prefer to keep your body in motion or blissed out beneath the hands of a masterful masseuse.

A convertible in South Florida is cool, these drivers say, even when it’s hot BY DAVE WIECZOREK You’re driving along the beach, top down, music up, the star of your fantasy beside you, the breeze blowing his or her

hair straight back like the fins of a ’59 T-Bird. The allure of a convertible is irresistible. “I’ve had several convertibles over the years. Some were bad rides, some had leaky roofs,” says Ed Brown, of Coral Springs, who now drives an arctic white 1958 Buick Special with bright red interior. “I’ve always wanted a convertible, because they’re sexy and glamorous.” It doesn’t get more complicated than that. Every convertible owner City & Shore spoke with talked about the glamour, sex appeal and liberation they feel behind the wheel of their open-air dream machines. “It’s such a fun, fresh-air feeling,” says Jodi Lerman, an attorney with Lerman and Whitebook in Hollywood, whose ride of choice is

CRIMES I have a little fashion sense.

“You’re going out dressed like that?’’ she says. “Yes,’’ I say. “Why not?” “Your shirt is turned inside out,” she smiles. “Did you know that?” Long pause. “Yes,” I say. “I knew that.” “You knew that?” “Yes,” I say. “It’s the style now.’’ “It is not the style now,’’ she says. “I thought you had a little fashion sense.’’ Long pause. “I do,” I say. “So you’re going out dressed like that?” Longer pause. “No,” I say. “You’re going to turn your shirt right-side out?” she smiles. “Yes,’’ I say. Short pause. “See,” I say, “I just did.” She smiles. “You’re going out dressed like that?’’ she says. “Yes,” I say, “why not…?” “There’s mustard on your shirt.” We can all use a little fashion sense from time to time,

and we get a lot this issue, starting on page 85, from Fashion & Style Director Elyse Ranart. Elyse has been with City & Shore for seven years, but she started her career as an apparel designer for some of the most successful brands in the fashion business. She followed her design career with a move into art direction, and spent six years as a Senior Art Director for Neiman Marcus advertising. Over the years, Elyse has worked with most every luxury lifestyle and iconic fashion brand in the business, including Armani, Prada, Chanel, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik. We are fortunate that she is on our side, watching what we’re wearing, saving us from fashion faux pas. She follows fashion the way a baseball fanatic follows a box score; the way an oenophile follows a harvest; the way a foodie follows a food truck. When she says red’s the color this fall, men's wear is influencing women’s wear, prints are in or even – if it slipped past a discerning eye at home – there’s a little mustard on our shirt, we believe her. She has more than a little fashion sense. —Mark Gauert mgauert@cityandshore.com

Something to think about in line this fall at the Apple store: Is it better to buy an iPad or to buy stock in the company that makes it?

Get it or Forget It? BY LORI CAPULLO

Many of us will be lining up again at Apple stores this fall and winter, eager to upgrade to the new iPad and iPhone incarnations reportedly in the works. Here’s something to think about in line: Would it be better to buy stock in your favorite publicly traded companies or spend the same amount and just enjoy the stuff they make? Here’s how five of them – starting with Apple - performed over the past year:

As someone who has been through surgery more than once, I’ve learned a few things. First, your faith helps give you strength. Second, knowing you’re at a top-rated hospital is crucial.

“COMPASSION IS NOT A CORPORATE POLICY; IT’S A PERSONALITY TRAIT.”

And finally, your hospital should employ the kind of people for whom compassion is second nature. Compassion and hope aid the healing process and make your experience so much better. When it comes to all of the above, Holy Cross Hospital is your natural choice in South Florida. – Regis Philbin

Light at the end of the Tunnel Tunnel to Towers run, commemorating fallen first responders of 9/11, returns

Looking for a way to pay tribute to the first responders who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks?

On Sept. 8, thousands of runners and walkers will gather at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale to participate in the 2nd Annual Tunnel to Towers Fort Lauderdale 5K Run/Walk. The event, presented by Patriot National Insurance Group, is intended to bring the South Florida community together and demonstrate that we have not forgotten our fallen firefighters and other first responders. The Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk began in 2002 in New York City, where it recreates the final steps of firefighter Stephen Siller. Siller was last seen running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel — with 75 pounds of gear strapped to his back — on his way to the World Trade Center soon after the attacks. Last year, over 20,000 people took part in that event. Organizers hope to eventually hold a similar run in 343 cities across the nation to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks. The Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk was brought to Fort Lauderdale last year by Cindy Campbell, director of client relations and special events at Patriot National Insurance Group in Fort Lauderdale. “I heard about the run in New York from a friend and contacted the Tunnel to Towers Foundation,” she says. “They asked us to have a run here in Fort Lauderdale, so I went to our CEO, and he thought it was a great idea.” Last year, over 3,000 local runners and walkers participated, raising more than $75,000 to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. Campbell is hoping to have over 5,000 participants this year. “We are proud to have brought the Tunnel to Towers Run to Fort Lauderdale,” says Steven Mariano, Patriot’s president and CEO. “The South Florida community was so deeply affected by the 9/11 attacks, and we consider it a special privilege to honor and remember the sacrifice of the first responders, without whom the tragedy would have been far worse.” The festivities begin at 6 a.m., when registration opens at Huizenga Plaza, 32 E. Las Olas Blvd. The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. In addition to the Run/Walk, the event will feature family-friendly activities, including food trucks, games and entertainment. The cost to register on race day is $35 per adult and $25 per child under 12. Online registration is available through 11 p.m. on Sept. 6 at a discounted rate. Proceeds will be used to build “smart homes” to allow triple and quadruple amputees from post-9/11 wars to live independently. Chef’s choice

A Hell’s Kitchen winner cooks for a heartfelt cause – healthy babies Hell’s Kitchen winner Paul Niedermann has a personal Chef Paul Niedermann reason for joining the 16th Annual March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction Event, Sept. 19 at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale. Actually, three reasons: His triplet nieces and nephew, Sarah, Lauren and Noah, who were born three months premature. Little Noah lived only 22 hours. However, the girls will celebrate their fourth birthday in November. “Sarah is tiny but a real firecracker,” says their mom, Kim Wilson, of Cooper City. “Lauren has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair, but she is doing great. “And Paul is the most amazing uncle to the twins and our older daughter, [6-year-old] Hannah. They’re crazy about him,” she says. Every year since the twins were born, Niedermann has participated in the annual March of Dimes Walk to support its mission of helping moms have healthy, full-term babies. The former junior sous chef from Davie won Season 9 of Hell’s Kitchen last fall, along with the head chef job at Blt Steak in New York City. At the Signature Chefs event he will hold cooking demos as well as Q&A sessions. “For people who have any questions about my experiences during the show or after winning – what it’s like to be a head chef in Niedermann the Big City,” he says. and niece Hannah And what is that like? The straight-talking chef says it has been life-changing. “I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love and to have my family as support – you know, to make sure my big head can still fit through the door,” he says with a laugh. “In the beginning it was a little bit intense to be put in the spotlight in New York, but now it’s second nature. It’s kind of amazing to have all these fans around the world. I can’t thank them enough.” Niedermann will join 20 area chefs at the Broward March of Dimes event for an evening of food, wine, live music, and silent and live auctions. It’s all to benefit programs that promote stronger, healthier babies, says event chairman, Gerry Litrento, senior executive vice president at Bank United. “Funds raised at this event support life-saving research and educational programs to reverse the trend of premature births, the most serious infant health problem in the U.S.,” Litrento says. Chef Niedermann has a straightforward explanation for his participation: “Simply put, I do it for the babies.” March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction Event, Sept. 19, Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale, 754-300-2614 or djordan@marchofdimes.com. – Elizabeth Rahe

Five to favor

How to stay on trend this season, even in steamy South Florida BY LORI CAPULLO Every fashionable South Florida woman wants to be in step with the seasonal trends. But let’s face it: in this subtropical environment, not many of us lead the life for clothing straight off the runways. So we asked Jonie Sabo, of Neiman Marcus Fort Lauderdale, What’s

Pin one on If you’re going to add one new piece to your Fragments accessory collection, make it a brooch. “You for Neiman can do a cluster — maybe three,” Sabo Marcus, $125 suggests. “If you don’t want to pin them on, add them to a necklace to give it a whole Good new look and make a bold statement.” Also for you hot: piles of bangles and dramatic earrings. and your wardrobe: Mixed greens Ippolita bangles, $550 to $14,500 “This is number one on the trend list,” Sabo says. “Greens in all shades Drew Barrymore Navy — from teals to in an Emilio is the emerald to lime Pucci gown for new — worn alone Neiman Marcus, neutral photographed by or together.” Norman Jean Roy. Retro to go

See something vintage you’d like to see in your party or wedding? Rent it Jovan and Katie Blineau always were vintage fans. For her, it was

clothing, jewelry and thrift store furnishings. For him, it was vintage lighters. But it wasn’t until they visited the Postcard Inn on St. Petersburg Beach that the hotel’s retro style inspired them to collect vintage that morphed into a business. A few months later they got engaged and began collecting vintage china, lace tablecloths, wooden crates and mismatched chairs for their Miami wedding. “We spent seven months collecting,” he says. “Halfway through we had enough for the wedding and decided we would keep going. We said this would be a great business that doesn’t exist in South Florida.” They started their rental business, Unearthed Vintage, in February but kept their full-time jobs. He is a fire inspector for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. She sells advertising for CBS Outdoor. They have furnished everything from weddings to showers and birthday parties and hope to expand into movie props. An event for 100 people ranges from $2,000-$5,000. Styling and delivery are extra. They serve Key West to Palm Beach. “We had seen similar businesses in California,” she says. “California tends to be ahead of Florida with trends. We are hopeful South Florida will be as receptive of vintage as it is modern art deco.” —Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub Unearthed Vintage, by appointment only, call 305-332-8494; www.unearthedvintage.com.

Constructive fun

Bradenton business turns earth moving into big-kid play How many of us stuck in seemingly endless construction projects on major interstates here haven’t glanced out the window at the workers and their heavy equipment and thought, “that looks like fun’’? A lot more fun than sitting in traffic. A crew Alisa and Jason Bennett, of People at Play in Bradenton, are member practices now offering adults the opportunity to operate earth-moving excavation equipment in a 21-acre skills sandbox just for fun. Owners of an excavation and utility construction company, the Bennetts got the idea during a downturn a few years ago when they hosted a barbecue and equipment play session for civil engineers to drum up business. It was such a hit, the couple realized the potential for putting their machinery to use during off times. Now on many Saturdays, pre-registered participants report to the People at Play site 50 miles south of Tampa to dig, scoop and bulldoze. Every session begins with a video orientation and training with an OSHA-certified instructor. Then fledgling crew members hit the dirt. Packages begin at $155 (plus tax) for a one-hour experience on a skid-steer loader (Bobcat) and go up to the six-hour Superintendent package at $1,575, which includes operating a skid-steer loader, excavator and bulldozer and maneuvering through an obstacle course plus a “hearty boxed lunch.” The Bennetts also offer team-building programs for groups up to 12 people – an activity that threatens to bury the corporate A photo ropes course outing. completes the experience.

FROM KITCHEN TO BATH BY CHARLYNE VARKONYI SCHAUB One investment in your home that typically

pays off when you sell is to remodel the kitchen or the bath. Today we can make our bathrooms resemble home spas and our kitchens look like a master chef is behind the burners. Here are some of the latest innovations – from tubs that look more like furniture to induction cook tops with Japanese-grill accessories.

Clean lines

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, rising stars of European design who have been compared to Philippe Starck, recently launched their Axor Bouroullec Collection for Hansgrohe. The vanity, with room for a drop-in sink ($2,200), features the clean lines of a Parsons table. Sinks range from $998 for a wall-mounted one-shelf version to $1,098 for a large drop in with two shelves. Prices range from $428 for a singlehole faucet to $1,298 for a shelf with a single-hole faucet. Bottle shock

Wine lovers can show their appreciation for the grape with Bottles by Erin Adams for New Ravenna Mosaics. The backsplash, perfect for a kitchen or bar area, comes in Moonstone, Opal and Julius Jewel Glass. It sells for $214 a square foot and is made to measure. Available at Ceramic Matrix in Miami, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach. See www.ceramicmatrix.com

French doors fresh take

Sub-Zero has introduced a new 36-inch wide refrigerator featuring a pair of 18-inch French doors for smaller kitchens. It is available in stainless steel or as an overlay that can be flush inset. Suggested retail starts at $8,310. Available at House of Appliances, 600 N. Congress Ave., Delray Beach 33445, 561-278-2299, www. houseofappliancesinc.com.

Furniture for the bath

Bathrooms have been evolving from functional to sophisticated. Why settle for a simple vanity when you could relive the style of old Hollywood? Greta Garbo or Joan Crawford would be right at home in front of Waterworks’ Henry metal mirror vanity ($6,329). The vanity, with openings for two sinks, is made with metal and beveled mirror. Available at Waterworks showroom, 167 NE 39th St., Miami 33137, 305-573-7593, www.waterworks.com. 2. Craving copper

copper in a bathtub shape with a hand-rubbed bronze finish ($566). Available at Ferguson Enterprises South Florida locations, www.ferguson.com; and www.faucetdirect.com. 3. Country classic

ROHL has introduced a casement detail for an updated look on the classic apron-front sink ($1,771). Making these sinks with fireclay construction in England is a matter of pride for the artisans, who sign every sink they create. The surface resists scratches, alkaline and acids. Available in white and biscuit at Millers Fine Decorative Hardware, 501 S. Olive Ave.,West Palm Beach 33401, 561-837-9090, www.millershardware.com; and Ferguson Enterprises South Florida locations, www.ferguson.com.

4. Seamless solution

Collecting everything from fruit and vegetable peels to egg shells and coffee grounds for compost is made easier with Blanco’s Solon ($525), a below-the-counter vessel made from recycled stainless steel. It can be installed next to sinks or in any countertop for a seamless appearance. An attractive lid offers a hygienic seal that contains odors. Available at Wool Plumbing Supply, 1321 NE 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale 33304, 954763-3632, woolsupply.com; and Next Plumbing Supply, for locations in Deerfield Beach, Davie and West Palm Beach, see www.nextps.com. 5. Induction innovation

Thermador has introduced a new induction cook top that

claims to be the largest on the market. It has an Anti-Overflow System that shuts off and sounds an alarm when liquids are detected on the surface. Induction, a cooking method that experts say is a cool, clean and more energy-efficient alternative to gas, is perfect for hot, humid South Florida because 90 percent of the heat goes into the pot. It heats fast like gas, but the burner - which isn’t as hot - cools quickly when the pot is removed. A tappanyaki grill like those you find in Japanese restaurants is available as an accessory. Price available upon request. Available at Coral Springs Appliance Center, 3500 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs 33065, 954-752-3880, www.csappliances.com.

The kitchen features KitchenAid stainless-steel appliances, polished stone countertops and gooseneck faucets with Franke stainless steel sinks. The floors are eco-friendly bamboo. New bamboo cabinets by UltraCraft are stylishly floating and eco-friendly.

Details Light was brought into the kitchen with lots of windows, a glass door and a combination of light and dark cabinetry. The island was designed with two levels so the children could sit comfortably. Countertops are granite and some of the cabinets have seeded glass fronts. Appliances include a Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher, beverage

center and wine cooler on the island and pot filler. Lesson Don’t be limited by the original footprint of a room. Clients in Palm City requested an expansion of their kitchen into a room their family of four could enjoy.

Terrific tile BY CHARLYNE VARKONYI SCHAUB Tile gets more sophisticated and innovative each year. Color is coming back, but forget about the dated pink or blue bathrooms of the past. Digital technology has turned ceramic into look-a-likes for wood, marble and granite. Digital printing also allows manufacturers to produce smaller batches of a new collection to see how it will sell before making a commitment. Welcome to the name game. Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli and musician/designer Lenny Kravitz have introduced collections. Here are some tile collections from the recent 2012 Coverings show in Orlando which may reinvigorate your kitchen and bath.

1. Cavalli chic Fashion designer Roberto Cavalli introduced Diva Damasco Nero, a ceramic tile with the look of wallpaper, for Ceramiche Ricchetti. The tile, which has the same sophistication as his clothing designs, has a suggested retail price of $35 to $45 a square foot. Can be ordered from Rainbow Tile, 1800 N. Powerline Road, Pompano Beach, 33069, 954-972-8001, www.rainbowtile.com. 2. Glassic, a classic Seneca Tiles, a former Miami company now in Ohio, introduced Glassic, an attractive cracked glass fused to high-fired stoneware. It is available in 21 colors and sells for $35 a square foot. Available at Ceramic Matrix in Miami, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach. See www.ceramicmatrix.com.

3. Surfside style Maui, a tile made of stone and glass with a motif reminiscent of surfboards, is a perfect solution for a backsplash in a kitchen or a wall in a powder room. It comes in Calacatta Gold, Bianco Carrara and La Leaf – Silver. Suggested retail prices range from $84-$146 a square foot based on materials selected. Available at Ceramic Matrix in Miami, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach. See www.ceramicmatrix.com. 4. Ecological example Re-use is a color porcelain from Emil Ceramica Group’s Provenza brand, made from recycled concrete and marble slated for the landfill. It was developed with ink-jet technology to mimic the look of marble and with isostatic pressing to create a texture to make it appear as if it has been worn by time and use. Suggested retail for the 18-36-inch size is $8.50 a square foot and the 12-by-12 inch mesh mounted mosaic is $26. It comes in three colors and matte and polished finishes. Order through Tamiami Tile of Delray, 1085 SW 15th Ave., Delray Beach, 33444, 561-272-8453, www.tamiamitile.com.

5. Coloring your world Tired of too many neutrals? Cerim introduced the Vanity Collection for the bathroom in Lily, Rose, Peony, Purple, Violet and Aubergine. Sizes include 20-by-20 inches and a mosaic. Prices available upon request. Available at Specialty Tile Products, 838 Orange Ave., Winter Park, FL 32789, 407-647-9355, www.specialtytile.com 407-647-9355, specialtytile.com. 6. Kravitz cool Musician/designer Lenny Kravitz, who founded Kravitz Design in 2003, introduced Goccia, a 3-D tile that he describes as an architectural statement. The design, which represents a drop of water, was done in collaboration with Lea Ceramiche and is available in black or white with a glossy or matte finish. Suggested retail is $18.85 for a 5.1-inch square to $26.55 for a 16-by-4 inch piece. Distributor Lea Ceramiche can be reached at info@leausa.com or 704-522-6300 for retailers when it becomes available.

BEST CARE

NURSES REGISTRY PROVIDING THE ‘BEST’ IN HOME HEALTH CARE No one ever wants to believe that there may be a time or place where they cannot take care of themselves or need to find care for a loved one. At times, life throws us curve balls, leaving us in need of an in-home nurse or aide. Whether it be to care for a post surgical procedure, a debilitating accident or illness, caring for an elderly parent, or happily helping the new mom at home, Best Care, a private, state licensed Nurses Registry, has been providing the highest quality, personalized home health care in South Florida for over 30 years. One of the largest family-owned private duty home care companies, Best Care is a one stop shop for all of your private duty home health care needs. Led and managed by Marc Spector, President & CEO, and his business partner Jacque Scherfer, R.N., B.S.N., Vice President, Best Care’s mission is to provide the most experienced and compassionate caregivers who deliver comprehensive, quality health care and assistance to individuals, of any age in their own homes. The company’s goal is to match clients with caregivers who enable the client to maintain a quality of life, as close as possible to his or her daily routine; thereby, enhancing the client’s dignity and minimizing his/her feelings of dependence. Aside from providing its clients with preeminent care and service, Best Care distinguishes itself from other home health care companies with a number of innovative programs. The company accepts long-term care insurance and it issues an assignment of benefits so clients do not have to pay upfront. Best Care also offers private “concierge cosmetic care” for patients who undergo elective cosmetic surgery. Best Care caregivers accompany patients home, or to hotels in the case of out-of-town patients, and provide comfortable and confidential care in the privacy of their dwelling. Additionally, Best Care offers a special home health care program for qualified veterans and their surviving spouses. Home Health Care is a less expensive and more effective way to provide health services for anyone needing assistance or supervision, yet not requiring hospitalization. The Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Home Health Aides and Companions contracted with Best Care’s clients strive to provide healing environments where patients and families learn to care for themselves. All caregivers are put through background checks and are thoroughly vetted. Established in 1980, Best Care is a multi-services registry that can refer caregivers who provide a comprehensive range of health care services, on a 24-hour basis. The company which has offices in the tri-county, operates 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, providing caregiver services at home, in the hospital or at nursing homes. For more information, please visit www.bestcare.net or call 954-522-1112, 305-652-3311 or 561.254.2802.

Jacque Scherfer and Marc Spector of Best Care Marc Spector, CEO of Best Care, suggests some important and useful questions to ask when looking for in-home health care nurses and aides for yourself or a loved one: 1. Is the company you have selected a licensed entity or do they carry a certificate? Make sure the home health care registry or agency is licensed through the state. Some companies in home health care may carry a certificate, not a license. If you go through a registry or agency that is licensed through the state, such as Best Care, it ensures the state is overseeing it and making sure that certain requirements are met. A company that carries a certificate does not have state oversight like a licensed company. 2. Is your caregiver properly licensed and what kind of training or background do they have? You definitely want to make sure your caregiver has the proper training and level of training that can cater to the health needs of the individual. Only those with a license or certificate of a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, a certified nursing assistant or a home health aide are allowed to provide hands on care (therapists are also permitted) per Florida Law. 3. What kind of background check is being done? It would be best to hire a state licensed company like Best Care which is required to run a level two background check on all nurses and nurses aides, rather than hiring someone on your own when you do not know their background history.

TAKING OUTPATIENT SURGERY IN STRIDE By Audra Hodges

The moment that a physician utters the word “surgery,” most patients experience the same feeling: anxiety. No matter what kind of procedure needs to be performed, there are physical, financial and time factors that cause people to experience elevated stress levels. Aside from worrying about work and family concerns, even outpatient surgery involves some level of risk and requires a certain amount of recovery time. There are many ways, including breathing techniques, imagery and more, to stay positive, upbeat and focused on the good outcome of a successful surgery. Whether you are scheduling an in-hospital stay or an outpatient procedure, proper preparation can relieve the feelings of being overwhelmed before surgery. Here are some guidelines to ensure you come prepared for your appointment: Talk with your physician about: • The expectations, benefits and risks of the procedure • What type of anesthesia will be administered and what recovery time is expected • Any medications (over-the-counter or prescription) you are currently taking, as well as any prior procedures, history of chronic illnesses and allergies you may have • Any post-operative instructions regarding medications, changing dressings and follow-up appointments

Remember: • Stop drinking and eating for the recommended amount of time before and after surgery • Follow any specific pre-operative bathing, shaving or cleaning instructions • Do not wear makeup the day of surgery, including nail polish • Do not wear contacts the day of surgery • Leave any valuables and jewelry at home • Advise the medical staff if you have dentures or wear any other prosthetic devices • Arrange all insurance coverage prior to surgery as many insurance carriers do not cover many plastic surgery procedures (i.e. cosmetic procedures) • Make sure you have a ride home after your procedure Remember: No surgery is routine. Health care professionals follow specific standards and practices to ensure your safety during the surgical procedure. Stress relief can greatly improve a patient’s health outcomes. Choosing the right physician and a highlyrated hospital, like Broward Health Imperial Point, (BHIP) is one of the most important decisions you can make. The BHIP surgical team’s goal is to ensure a positive experience for the patient and their family. “Regardless of whether you come for a one-day outpatient surgery or a longer stay, we pride ourselves in providing a safe environment for all of our patients,” said Alice Taylor, Broward Health Imperial Point CEO. “Our outstanding physicians, nurses and support staff work hard to ensure every patient receives the highest level of quality care.”

NORTH SHORE MEDICAL CENTER

CAMPUS KEEPING BROWARD’S HEARTS BEATING SINCE 1974. At the Heart Institute of Florida at North Shore Medical Center FMC Campus, the team of dedicated board certified physicians, nurses and technicians have been taking care of Broward’s cardiac patients since 1974. With a rich legacy behind it, the Heart Institute of Florida recently entered a new era in cardiac care with the opening of the new Hybrid OR Suite and Valve Clinic. “FMC was the first hospital to perform open heart surgery in Broward County in 1974,” said Ben A. Rodriguez, Chief Administrative Officer. “Since then, our history of excellence in cardiac care has remained steadfast. With the new hybrid suite open, we are proud to offer the future of cardiac care today at FMC.” The addition of the new Hybrid OR Suite compliments the hospital’s legacy of leadership in cardiac care by enabling FMC’s cardiologists and cardiac surgeons to offer some of the most sophisticated treatment options for patients. The suite is an advanced operating room that combines imaging capabilities with traditional surgery. The new technology may reduce the patients’ recovery time as well as the risk of complications. The new technology features a robotic arm that is linked to an advanced imaging system that allows flexible movement to almost any location on a patient so that the surgeon can see internal details from multiple angles. Typical procedures performed in the hybrid OR include: diagnostic angiograms, angioplasty and stent placement. The hybrid OR suite is also maintained as a sterile environment allowing physicians to use the room for open vascular procedures should they need to. Through the new Valve Clinic, patients have access to some of the latest cardiac treatments performed by board certified physicians specifically trained to perform innovative valve procedures designed to repair or replace the Aortic Valve. The program at FMC offers patients a streamlined process with one day of several appointments instead of many appointments spread out over multiple specialists. A visit to FMC’s Valve Clinic can include an evaluation by a cardiologist and a cardiovascular surgeon, review of prior diagnostic studies, and additional testing if deemed necessary that could include an echocardiogram and a CT scan. Heart valve disease may be suspected if the heart sounds heard through a stethoscope are abnormal. This is usually the first step in diagnosing a heart valve disease. A characteristic heart murmur (abnormal sounds in the heart due to turbulent blood flow across the valve) can often indicate valve regurgitation or stenosis. To further define the type of valve disease and extent of the valve damage, physicians at the Heart Institute of Florida may use any of the following diagnostic procedures: Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), Echocardiogram, Chest x-ray, cardiac catheterization or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In some cases, it may be determined that the only treatment for heart valve disease may be careful medical supervision.

However, other treatment options may include medication, surgery to repair the valve, or surgery to replace the valve. Specific treatment will be determined by your physician based on: the patient’s age, overall health and medical history, extent of disease, the location of the valve, signs and symptoms, the patient’s individual tolerance for specific medications, procedures or therapies, expectations for the course of the disease and the patient’s opinion or preference. FMC’s Valve Clinic patient navigator works closely with each patient and makes all necessary appointments for the visit to ensure each patient receives personalized care. Treatment plans are then shared with the patient’s personal physician. It is important to note that mild heart valve disease may not cause any symptoms. The following are some of the most common symptoms of heart valve disease; however, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may vary depending on the type of heart valve disease present and may include: chest pain, palpitations caused by irregular heartbeats, migraine headaches, fatigue, dizziness, low or high blood pressure (depending on which valve disease is present), shortness of breath, abdominal pain due to an enlarged liver. Symptoms of heart valve disease can also resemble other medical conditions. oes the idea of going to the dentist leave you terrified? Has the fear of sitting in a dentist’s chair caused you to postpone needed care? If so, you’re not alone. According to some estimates, one in seven people suffer from some level of dental anxiety. But help is available, thanks to Sleep Dentists, a full-service dental practice in Plantation that specializes in Sedation or Sleep Dentistry. Sedation Dentistry is an innovative option for dental treatment for the dental-phobic, for patients with special needs, and for people who need complex dental treatment that requires one or more lengthy procedures but have limited time. “A lot of people confuse Sedation Dentistry with going to sleep,” says Dr. Lee A. Weiss, one of the members of Sleep Dentists. With sleep dentistry, you don’t smell, hear or feel anything. You will be completely asleep, not just drowsy. There are a lot of advantages to Sleep Dentistry, he notes. For instance, people in need of complex treatment can have the work completed in “one-half day or a day” because Sleep Dentistry enables the patient to receive care from more than one doctor or specialist. He also cites special-needs patients. Those with mental and physical handicaps or behavioral problems may have difficulty

receiving proper dental care because they may be unable to remain seated for long periods of time, and as a result require care in a hospital under general anesthesia. But Sleep Dentists allows such patients to receive their care in the Plantation office instead. Sleep Dentists is one of the few dental groups in this state that has hospital-trained doctors trained in general anesthesia and IV Sedation. The group holds general anesthesia permits from the State of Florida, and has facilities that satisfy the state’s requirements for administering general anesthesia. Since 1973, this office has combined a comfortable setting with a personal touch and the latest in technology to provide the best and most complete dental care. In addition to providing gentle care for special-needs patients and others with special concerns, Sleep Dentists provides comprehensive care for all members of the family. The practice includes general dentists, dental anesthesiologists, a medical anesthesiologist, a periodontist, an oral surgeon and a physician. Among the Sleep Dentists’ many services are bridges, cosmetic dentistry, dentures and partials, endodontics, extractions, general dentistry, implants, oral surgery, periodontal therapy, restorations, teeth whitening and Invisalign.

For more information, visit www.sleepdentists.com or call (954) 424-6500. Don’t let anxiety over dental care jeopardize your oral health. You can rest easy about the care you’ll receive from Sleep Dentists.

ore and more people from the Baby Boomer generation are turning 65 years of age in 2012. For them, and millions of other seniors, Medicare is an essential part of their healthcare plan. But the road to healthcare security can be a rough one, filled with potholes of frustration and misunderstanding, as people search for the answer to the question of “what is best for me?” Independent agent Robert Holzman, president of Robert Holzman, P.A., can help. “When a person reaches 65, he or she is inundated with Medicare information from multiple insurance carriers, and that’s where I come in,” he says. “I want people to understand the process; I want to educate them about what can be done to secure their future wellbeing — and to choose the plan that is most appropriate.” He can discuss the benefits of Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage (United Healthcare and United American), long-term care, annuities and life insurance — but most importantly, he’s an agent that provides reliable information so clients enjoy peace of mind in their senior years. A health insurance veteran of 41 years, Holzman understands the ever-changing world of health care in America. He understands the challenging importance of long-term care for seniors — a major concern in today’s insurance industry. “Without a doubt, insured home health care options are — or should be — a priority on everyone’s medical checklist,” he says. “I specialize in long-term care insurance, so people can preserve their assets in the wake of a catastrophic illness.” Long-term care policies may be difficult to obtain because insurance companies know the downside of how much extended payouts to subscribers will affect their bottom line.

“I can help get clients a better premium, and I can help couples in their 40s and 50s plan for the future,” he says. “The younger one is, the less the premium they pay — and that premium remains basically the same for the life of the policy. Many younger people are taking advantage of that option.” It’s important to remember that after a hospital stay, there may be an extended period of physician-prescribed home care requiring the services of an R.N., a therapist, home health aide or a caregiver. Victims of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer or other chronic conditions may need assistance in the basic daily necessities of dressing, eating, going to the bathroom and other types of daily care. “Robert Holzman, P.A. has plans for all those situations,” says the firm’s president. “I’ve seen people drain their bank accounts and sell their homes just to cover the cost of long-term care.” Robert Holzman, P.A. provides outstanding home care plans that do not require being in the hospital or a nursing home to collect benefits. The firm has access to many of the major A-plus or A-rated companies that offer longterm care plans, and he can help you choose the policy that will provide the best benefits. “A lot of clients depend on me to provide, or recommend, home health agencies,” Holzman says. “I’m very service oriented, and that’s been the foundation of my business, and one of the reasons why I have over 1,100 clients.” The insurance industry is unique in that agents are challenged with the task of dealing with people of different mindsets, different personalities and different agendas. The really good ones, like Robert Holzman, are capable of pinpointing the exact coverage a person needs. “I would not recommend anything that I would not use myself,” he says. “I am happy to provide in-home consultations and answer any and all questions potential clients may have.”

The Future of

Pain Management BY: SANDY SMITH

You suffer from chronic pain. You have tried many “traditional” remedies like injections and radio frequency. You have even spoken with a surgeon and you’re still in great discomfort. Millions of Americans suffer from disabling and debilitating spinal conditions. Besides the obvious incapacitating effects, living with pain can cause and aggravate other illnesses like anxiety, stress, and depression. The doctors at South Florida Spine Clinic, pioneers in pain management, are using a new highly-effective treatment for those suffering from painful spinal, neurologic and vascular conditions. Neuromodulation of the spine (also known as spinal cord stimulation or neurostimulation) is a minimally invasive procedure that electronically controls the body’s ability to sense pain. According to Dr. Jarrod Friedman, South Florida Spine Clinic’s Pain Management Director, “neuromodulation utilizes an implanted pacemaker-like device that stimulates the nervous system enabling patients to alleviate and suppress chronic pain. The result is an alternate sensation (like a soft massage or tingling) instead of discomfort.” Spinal cord stimulation is an excellent therapy for the treatment of chronic pain. “We have effectively utilized this technology to avoid complex surgeries, treat patients who are not surgical candidates and even extinguish pain from prior failed surgeries,” said Dr. Friedman. Some of the conditions South Florida Spine Clinic treats with neurostimulation include:

patients to regain mobility and become productive again. Many of our patients return to work and go back to playing sports after the procedure.” Neuromodulation is a great solution to control your pain because it gives you the independence and ability to say when you want your pain controlled and where you need your pain controlled. South Florida Spine Clinic is the leader in pain management and minimally-invasive, function-sparing alternatives to traditional spine surgery. With 20,000 procedures and 21 years of experience, their goal is to reduce painfully-disabling spine conditions with advanced techniques that preserve and restore function and mobility. For more information on neuromodulation contact: South Florida Spine Clinic 954-567-1332 www.FloridaSpineSurgery.com

Neuropathy related to diabetes ! Amputation-related pain, and ! Other chronic pain syndromes Neurostimulation is a two-part procedure that involves a trial where the patient gets to experience the stimulator device at home for a few days. During the trial, a temporary lead is placed under the skin; patients use a computerized modulator to increase or decrease the level of alternate sensation. “If the patient finds relief during the trial, we move to the second part of the procedure, which is a permanently implanted device,” says Friedman. When asked about the benefits of neurostimulation, spine surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Cantor, South Florida Spine Clinic’s Medical Director said that “neurostimulation is one of the only spinal procedures that patients can take ‘for a test drive.’” Speaking about effectiveness, Dr. Cantor added that “neurostimulation is a safe and effective treatment for chronic forms of pain; it allows Image: Copyright St. Jude Medical. Five questions for fashion insiders about true style and fashion for fall

What is the difference between fashion & style? Fashion is something to follow, like a set of rules that are given to you; whereas style is the exact opposite of that. It is all about the freedom of self-expression and the ability to create your own rules.

FROM F THE EXPERTS

rom a nude mouth to bold red lips, smoky shadow to an electric-blue eye in makeup and braids and top knots to slick-back strands for hair, beauty for fall is all over the map. I sat down with hair and makeup artist Euridice Martin to get her take on beauty for fall and beyond. Braids Smoky eye

Who is your favorite fashion icon? For me there is no one person but a period in time. The women of the 1940s had a perfect balance between strong and sexy. I think that Alexander McQueen is a contemporary design house that has brought that balance of power back to the modern woman. What are the top three rules you follow when it comes to beauty? 1. First of all I think about where she is going and what she is wearing. Hair and makeup should complement her overall look.

3. Good preparation of the skin is most important when it comes to makeup. Clean, moisturize and use the right foundation for your skin tone before adding any color. Once you have created a strong “canvas” you can have fun with the palette.

What hair and makeup trends inspire you most from the new fall collections? Without a doubt, Rodarte was the most inspiring show for me this fall. James Kaliardos created the most beautiful makeup, with a heavy dusting of bronzer on the eyebrows and cheeks, complemented by faux bobs [and] sprinkled with stars from Odile Gilbert, for an ethereal glow that is strong and sensual at the same time. Fill in the blank: The key beauty product for this season is_____? I never tire of red lips, which are very present again for fall. My favorite this season is Diorific lipstick in Roulette Red, from Dior. It’s got great long lasting coverage and is simply the perfect shade.

Five questions for fashion insiders about true style and fashion for fall

his fall brings us lots of looks so there is something for everyone. Designers are still passionate about prints but strong solid reds and winter whites have captured their imagination as well – not to mention borrowing from the “boys”. I talked with fashion stylist Veronica Camacho about her inspiration and POV on fall: What is the difference between fashion & style?

many people, including myself, with his discerning eye for street style. Riding his bike through Manhattan with camera in hand, he sees what others miss and captures individuals who have a sense of style that is both unique and personal. His photographs for The New York Times have launched many fashion trends - translated by editors and designers, who draw inspiration for their stories and collections. What are the top three rules you follow when it comes to style? 1. If you don’t feel good about what you are wearing, don’t leave the house. Always put on something that makes you feel confident. Because confidence is the key ingredient to great style. 2. Keep a good pair of nude pumps in your closet. They will work with almost anything in your wardrobe. But be sure they are of quality. An inexpensive pair in that shade will look cheap.

Who is your favorite fashion icon?

my favorite season, so I’ll mention a few things I especially like this year. I’m crazy for the gentleman’s influence this season. The pantsuit, accessorized with men's wear millinery, looks both sexy and strong. I also like all of the poppy palettes. It’s really refreshing to see color for fall, not to mention the runaway red trend, which is such a classic color. Finally, I absolutely love all the white that I have been seeing in many of the collections. Whoever said that you mustn’t wear white for fall, hasn’t been following fashion. who grows up to be a swan. We read it – or had it read to us – when we were children. But what makes the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale so poignant today – so lasting into adulthood – is its story of transformation. It’s as much a message that applies to personal style – and fashion – as fairy tale. Many of the fashion icons and muses of yesterday were considered odd, different and quirky growing up – and the same is true today. But ducklings, we remember, can become swans: The ones to watch, the ones to admire and to emulate. Few things are more seductive than fashion because of its capacity to transform. Fashion offers us an opportunity to reinvent ourselves each time we dress; and clothing can be our most creative form of selfexpression. In our media-mad culture, more women than ever look to celebrities for this mode of “self-expression,” while most so-called fashion icons don’t even have their own sense of style. I’m bewildered to see so many women following celebrities for trend cues when so many of the stars have their style manufactured for them. Celebrity stylists squeeze them into gowns for red-carpet events, whispering that this or that designer is “the one to wear.” So what they end up in has very little to do with their own personal fashion POV, if they even have one. Who wouldn’t look “the part” in a borrowed $10,000 gown? But fashion icon? Not even close. Off the carpet, the stars are often seen strolling around with the requisite bottle of water in hand, donning the standard celebrity

from the red carpet

A former model turned actress, Diane Kruger comes from the world of fashion, and her perspective is spot on. She brings retro glamour to the red carpet, but she keeps it from turning cliché with her modern edge.

Zoe Saldana clearly loves fashion but smartly stays clear of wearing trends head-to-toe, like so many celebrities. Her penchant for femininity with an edge, and risktaking choices of color and cut, keep her from being just another pretty face in the spotlight.

Helena Bonham Carter

Cate Blanchett's claim that she was a high-school Goth doesn’t surprise me. The Hobbit star is still taking risks, from her casual elegance in man-tailored suits to sweeping the red carpet in show-stopping statement gowns.

Tilda Swinton is simply sublime in every choice she makes. Her avant-garde style is minimal, modern, dramatic and daring. Equally elegant in sportswear or eveningwear, she claims, “I follow my nose.”

Truly a free spirit, Helena Bonham Carter says she dresses to please herself. Her “howdo-you-like-themapples” style is fabulously fun, often tongue-incheek and always uniquely her own.

Michelle Williams

Like no other actress at the moment, Carey Mulligan has mastered a modern take on the ’60s French New Wave style. Her freshfaced, gamine glamour shows that she has the pulse on fashion but her spunky style makes it all her own.

is the perfect mix of quirk and charm. She has a ladylike look that says modern and an atypical elegance that says nonchalant chic. Her keen sense of pairing apparel with the unexpected accessory is both surprising and stylish.

makes interesting style choices, from Rodarte to vintage Ossie Clark. She opts not to use a stylist, she says, because “there’s nothing interesting about looking perfect.” I couldn’t agree more.

Salma Hayek has long flirted with fashion, but since her marriage to Francois-Henri Pinault, the CEO of luxury good company PPR, it's become a fullon love affair. At a curvaceous 5'2", she says, "You have to work with what's available - like your body but sometimes it's good to take chances."

is the archetypal “English Rose.” Her highly romantic style is both eclectic and elegant, making her a perfect choice as the face of Coco Chanel fragrance and Tom Ford’s new women’s wear collection.

uniform of designer denim, trendy T-shirt, leather jacket, boots and, of course, the “look-at-me-but-don’t-look-at-me” oversized sunglasses. This is not style, personal or otherwise. So when thinking about celebrity style, it is much easier to reference from the past, including true stars Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, the two Hepburns (Audrey and Katharine) – another reason “retro” style remains so relevant today. But that’s too easy, and a bit of a cop-out, if you ask me. Their costume designers, nee stylists, dressed many of these women as well. Even the “lifestyle” images of them, “at home” or “on trips abroad,” were staged

photo-shoots, for which these stars were primped and primed. That said, it doesn’t mean that there are no fashionable females in today’s firmament of stars. They are just harder to spot and less likely to get the credit they deserve for having a steadfast sense of signature style. So with the start of the fall fashion season, it’s time to give credit where it’s due to some seriously stylish stars who choose clothing that is refreshing, different, sometimes quirky and often unexpected. The ones on these pages who know real style can be as transformative as duckling to swan. ●

“It’s such a fun, fresh-air feeling,” says Jodi Lerman, an attorney with Lerman and Whitebook in Hollywood, whose ride of choice is

a white 2012 Volvo C70. “I’ve never been on a motorcycle, but it must be the same type of experience.” “For me,” says George Pacinelli, a telecommunications executive from Weston who drives a black 2011 Infiniti G37, “riding with the top down is all about fresh air and freedom.” Americans have glorified and mythologized convertibles for decades in song and on screens big and small, and had fun, fun, fun doing so. In the 1960s the Beach Boys sang of the girl who lied to Daddy and led boys on a wild goose chase. They made no reference to a convertible Thunderbird, but make no mistake, the picture in our heads was of a defiant surfer girl and her wind-tossed sun-bleached hair. Some 50 years later country singer Tim McGraw “I get thumbs-up everywhere I go,’’ Aurelio shifted into a higher hormonal gear in the back seat of a red ragtop: She said please Camacho says of his Fiat 500C Lounge Edition. don’t stop lovin’ me. It was Hollywood, naturally, that really revved our engines for convertibles. Remember the sleek Corvette from the hit ’60s TV show Route 66? Bob McMahon does, and the pharmacist from Victoria Park in Fort Lauderdale knows something about the appeal of a ’Vette. He owned several Ferraris over the past 20 years before getting bored with them. “So I started looking for an old Corvette,” says McMahon, who found a 1966 Blue Laguna Corvette. “I’ve got the top down just about every time I use it, usually listening to ’70s music like the Rolling Stones. It gives me a pleasant, wind-in-your-hair feeling.” Convertibles have played key roles in countless movies, from

romance to comedy and tragedy. Remember Benjamin furiously shifting gears in his Alfa Romeo in pursuit of his true love in The Graduate? Who could forget Ferris Bueller and friends playing hooky in Mr. Frye’s Ferrari? Or Thelma and Louise's epic road trip in Louise's sky-blue Thunderbird? Cheryl Dempsey of Greenacres can tell you about succumbing to the lure of a T-Bird. “It’s the perfect South Florida car,” says Dempsey, a sales consultant at Maroone Ford of Delray who owns a black 2005 Thunderbird 50th Anniversary Special Edition, the last year Thunderbirds were made. “It makes me feel good when I get in it. Some owners have 7,000 miles on their cars. I have 62,000 on my T-Bird. I drive it every day. I don’t want a ‘special’ car. I want a car that’s special every day.”

Bit by the Fever

Open-air vehicles are no strangers to American roadways, of course. They’ve been around since the late 1800s and early 1900s, when cars were little more than motorized buggies. It wasn’t until 1910 that the first enclosed auto, a Cadillac, hit the streets. Ever since, the popularity of convertibles has had its ups and downs without ever fading from our fantasies.

“When the fever bites, you’ll always want a convertible,” says Brown of his Buick Special. “Once the top is down it’s a whole different space for transporting yourself.” The fever bit Aurelio Camacho, who recently swapped a behemoth for a little bitty beauty. “I traded my Hummer for a pearl white Fiat 500C Lounge Edition,” says Camacho, a real-estate investor from Davie. “I saw one on the streets and thought it was as cool as hell.” These chariots of desire are as much a part of Americana as astronauts, beauty queens and politicians who perch themselves atop the back seats and wave to parade crowds. Perhaps not surprisingly, Bill Clinton owned one of the sexiest rides ever, a 1967 “Clearwater Aqua” Mustang. For security reasons, upon entering

the White House in 1993 the president had to park his beloved ride. Two years ago, Clinton retrieved the Mustang from The Museum of Automobiles in Morrilton, Ark., where it had been on temporary loan, polished it up and gave the car to his 16-year-old nephew in California. Convertible conversion sometimes occurs unexpectedly. “I’d always been a Porsche driver and never had any intention of getting a convertible Jag until I test drove one,” says Gavin Robin, a marketing and advertising consultant from Boca Raton who pilots a black 2012 Jaguar XKR-S. “I went to the showroom and the salesman suggested I take it for the weekend. By the time I got home, I said to my wife: ‘Guess what? I’ve got a new car.’ ” He’d always thought of a “Jag as an older person’s car, but it’s

"When the top is down,'' says Gavin Robin, of his 2012 Jaguar XKR-S, "I feel free.''

really a younger person’s car. It’s surprisingly edgy, sleek and very powerful with a smooth ride. And when the top is down, it enhances my experience. I feel free.”

Cool Even When It Sizzles

If price is of no concern – “When the top goes down, the price goes up,” so goes the saying – there really is only one drawback to owning a convertible: Cruising around South Florida with the top down in the summer can be a blistering experience. That’s why Mary Williams, a human-resources executive from Fort Lauderdale, collapses the roof of her silver gray 2012 Lexus IS 350C after the stars start to twinkle. “Driving at night with the top down is just wonderful,” Williams says. “I absolutely love it.” No doubt about it, a convertible is cool even when it’s hot. “When it’s hot I’ll crank up the AC, and when people see me driving with the top down they just love it,” says Fiat owner Camacho. “I get thumbs-up everywhere I go.” Going topless is, apparently, the only way to go among these drivers in South Florida. As Dempsey says with a laugh: “I get a lot of looks when driving with the top down. People are probably saying, ‘Why is that 49-year-old woman driving a convertible T-Bird? She’s too old for it!’ I’m not!” And she’s going to go right on having fun, fun, fun until someone takes her T-Bird away. ●

NEW RESTAURANTS OF

2012

Imoto

Picture a shot glass perched atop a mound of shaved ice. Within the glass is a colorful soup of shochu, ponzu and sriracha, a silver blue oyster and golden uni (raw sea urchin) garnished with tobico caviar and scallions. It’s almost too pretty to touch, but it’s down the hatch — and the sea and earth collide into one glorious dance on your tastebuds. Chef Clay Conley has done it again, as he continues to shake up Palm Beach with his distinct flair with flavors. The James Beard Award semifinalist and executive chef behind last year’s best new restaurant, būccan, has added another (award-winning) restaurant to his portfolio this year. Nestled in the space adjacent to būccan on South County Road in Palm Beach is Imoto, Conley’s version of a Japanese izakaya. Imoto, translated to mean “little sister,” continues būccan’s successful “small plate, big flavor” concept with Japanese and Asian-inspired cuisine. The menu is carefully balanced between tried-and-true sushi, sashimi and tempura dishes interspersed with Chef Conley’s innovative creations, all inspired by his time living and working in Japan. What sets Conley and his restaurants apart from — and ahead of — the rest is his emphasis on flavor. Each dish is carefully prepared to perfectly execute the delicate textures and tastes that exemplify this type of cuisine. If you stick to Conley’s signature dishes, your senses are in for a treat. After the delightfully balanced Wianno oyster shooter, wow yourself with the yellow-tail sashimi with grapefruit, avocado and toasted coconut and “mm mm” your way through the Peking duck tacos with plum sauce. Bring it all to a stunning crescendo with the tuna and fois gras slider with mango salsa. Feeling less adventurous? Even the California rolls are worth a drive here. While only seating 40, Imoto’s atmosphere is bright and energetic, even if the tables are close and cozy. Just keep a wary eye on your curious neighbors and their wandering chopsticks.

PBCatch

The dearth of fine dining seafood restaurants in Palm Beach has been corrected considerably this year with the new PBCatch on Sunrise Avenue. PBCatch is not only beautifully decorated — with friendly, attentive service to match — but also features Chef Julien Gremaud's delightful selection of fresh, local fish and such customer favorites as steak and chicken. But it’s the raw bar and fantastic happy hour specials that get our applause. The raw bar boasts a great selection of fresh oysters, clams, crab and shrimp while the happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday not only offers $1 oysters, but two-for-one drink specials. his Florida institution has been owned and operated by the same family since 1949 and has never wavered in its commitment to give customers the best value for the dollar. A fire in August of 2011 brought the thriving business to an abrupt halt and forced the Studiale family to close the restaurant’s doors for nearly eight months. The restaurant — with all of its Old World charm restored — reopened in March. In addition to a new kitchen and equipment, new booths and carpet were installed, and the false ceiling in the reception area has been replaced to show the original tongueand-groove wood panels. But other than that, the oldest steakhouse and seafood restaurant in Broward County has resumed what it had been doing best: providing a great and varied menu and friendly and attentive service at great value. The regulars are back for the steaks and the large sides of potatoes, while newcomers are discovering the essence of the way South Florida used to be with the restaurant’s special sea bass française and steak au poivre.

Josef's Table, at the Polo Shoppes in Boca Raton

Josef’s Table

Josef’s Table makes our list for its wholly satisfying and simply delicious Euro-fusion cuisine. Each dish takes its cue from Austrian-born Executive Chef Josef Schibanetz, who has cooked from Europe to South America. Based at the Polo Shoppes in Boca Raton, Josef’s Table features a menu stemming from Chef Josef’s Austro/Italian culinary roots that is sophisticated and contemporary, with a hint of nostalgia. Josef’s signature items include wild mushroom beef and barley soup, roasted maple-leaf duck, herb-crusted rack of lamb and, of course, wiener schnitzel. Pair any of these dishes with a fabulous bottle of wine selected by the in-house sommelier and top it off with the delicate apfel strudel topped with housemade ice cream, and, well, you just might have the urge to go into the kitchen and give Chef Josef a hug. This is comfort food, Boca style.

Ernie’s Italian Chophouse

There are more than a few Italian restaurants in South Florida, and many offer veal osso buco; but Ernie’s Italian Chophouse’s osso buco is causing a stir in Lighthouse Point. The twin baby veal shanks are slow roasted to juicy perfection and served with a perfectly textured risotto Milanese. But it’s not only the osso buco that gets rave reviews, it’s nearly the entire authentic Italian menu. From the warm, crusty bread served with olives and a dipping sauce to the black linguini with shrimp and crab meat, to the grilled octopus tossed in a limoncello vinaigrette and served with cannelloni beans, Ernie’s delivers on freshness and flavor. The pasta is made fresh daily, the fish is fresh and the chocolate cake is excellent. In a sea of Italian joints, Ernie’s stands out for serving the most memorable Italian food in the area — a rather commendable achievement for a newly opened restaurant.

Stéphane’s duck a l'orange

Stéphane’s

If you’ve ever spent time in the metropolises of France, you might be familiar with the popular chain restaurant Léon de Bruxelles and its delicious moules frites, prepared every which way and served in cast-iron pots. Here at home, Boca Raton residents are now enjoying mussels every which way — along with a casually elegant dining experience as only the French can do — courtesy of the new Stéphane’s. If those moules frites prepared provençal, Mumbai or American style — with bourbon, Virginia ham, corn, Golden’s mustard and crème fraiche — bring back memories, it may be a simple tribute to owner Stéphane Lang-Willar’s previous culinary success in Paris as the owner and operator of a Léon de Bruxelles. But Stéphane’s serves much more than mussels, offering such traditional and contemporary authentic French dishes as duck a l’orange served with potato cakes, carrot purée and cauliflower purée, Mediterranean sea bass with mushroom and rice pilaf, and a selection of pastas, salads and sandwiches. From the raw bar to the bouillabaisse, expertly paired with selections from the wine list created by master sommelier Virginia Philip, Stéphane’s is worth a drive for out-of-towners as well. Stumped on what to cook tonight? How about a juicy rotisserie chicken, vanilla crème brûlée and a bottle of wine from Stéphane’s gourmet curbside service? With an all-star staff from executive chef John Belleme to general manager Patrick Keenan, Stéphane’s gets our nod not only for its menu that emphasizes sustainability and hormone-free meats, but for its regular specials and service as well.

The wines of Spain are well made, plentiful - and a bargain. So why aren't they better known? BY BOB HOSMON Most Americans know, thanks to Messrs. Lerner and Loewe, that the “rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain,” but they may not know the largest country on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula is awash with wine. In every region - from Alicante to Galicia, from Catalonia to Jerez - Spanish wineries produce enough wine annually to rank third in the world in total production, after Italy and France (the United States is fourth). Spanish wines deserve your attention. One good place to begin is with the wines of Rioja. They are as universally food friendly as the wines of California, are available in most U.S. markets, offer a variety of options for the consumer, and are, arguably, the best wine bargains in the world. Located in northern Spain, the city of Logroño (south of Bilbao) is the capital of Rioja, and wine has been produced here for centuries. The principal grape grown in Rioja is tempranillo, and most of the best red wines are produced from that grape, sometimes completely and sometimes as a dominant grape in a blend. Even though tempranillo may have come from France centuries ago, for all practical purposes, the grape now qualifies as a Rioja native. Other grapes used in red wine production include garnacha tinta, mazuelo and graciano (another uniquely Spanish grape). And while Rioja is best known for its red wines, the region also produces some delightfully refreshing whites from viura, malvasia and garnacha blanca grapes. While location and grapes contribute to the quality of Rioja wines, it’s the wine laws here that provide consumers with very useful information and true value. By labeling their reds either crianza, reserva or gran reserva, Rioja winemakers quantify the minimum aging of the wine that’s in the bottle. To earn the label “crianza,” the wine must have spent a minimum of one year in wood barrels and one year in bottle before it’s shipped to market. “Reserva” wines must spend a minimum of one year in barrel and another two years in barrel and/or bottle. “Gran reserva” wines must spend a minimum of 2 years in wood and three years in bottle before they show up in your neighborhood wine shop. And that’s where the best bargain for the buck comes into play. Crianza wines are easy on the palate and the pocketbook, usually retailing for around $15 or less a bottle. Reservas and Gran Reservas, while carrying higher price tags, offer even better bangs for the buck, and all because the wineries have taken on the responsibility of doing the bottle aging for the consumer. When you buy it, it’s ready to drink. Consider that a 2011 gran reserva won’t be on the market until, at the earliest, 2016, when it’s five years old. Try finding a five year old cabernet from California that’s still on the shelves. I once asked a Rioja bodega owner how the wineries could afford to hold on to that inventory, in essence sitting on a lot of capital they won’t see for years. His response was that tradition in Rioja was the reason the wines were so successful, and I got the impression that he would have no more considered changing that than he would dumping his wine into the nearby Ebro River. Some 200 Rioja wine brands are available in the U.S. market, and these are just a sampling of some I suggest you try (you won’t be sorry): Conde de Valdemar, Bodegas Ontañón, Bodegas Muriel, CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España), Bodegas Muga, Marqués de Murrieta, Marqués de Riscal, Marqués de Cáceres, Bodegas Lan, Bodegas José Palacios, La Rioja Alta, Bodegas Bilbaínas, Bodegas Beronia, Bodegas Riojanas and Bodegas Baigorri.

art letters From The Norton Museum of Art's Clubs, Joints and HonkyTonks exhibition of photography: Erykah Badu, photographed by David Scheinbaum at the Sunshine Theatre, Albuquerque, N.M., Jan. 20, 2003. Gelatin silver print. Edition 1AP, courtesy of the artist.

ONE FOR THE STAGES

Is the place we listen to music as important as the music itself? We speak of “music to our ears,” but the “musical experience” can encompass all the senses. Just ask those who attended Woodstock, the 1969 music festival in upstate New York that helped shape the attitudes of a generation. Images of Woodstock by Elliott Landy are among the 75 photographs in Clubs, Joints and Honky-Tonks, at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Other noted photographers, including Jeff Dunas, David Scheinbaum and Henry Horenstein, take visitors through a visual odyssey of rock, country music, hip-hop and blues. The exhibition, which runs through Sept. 30, concentrates not so much on the singers and musicians, but rather the audiences and the venues that add vitality and flavor to musical presentations. Says curator Tim B. Wride, “This complex interweaving and reconciliation of performance, environment and image-making could only be achieved by photographers whose understanding and passion for the music is matched by the creativity and courage of their talent.”
