When Related Group unveils a seaside condo, there are always too many attractions to resist. At Casa Costa, midway between Boca Raton and Palm Beach, you’ll find everything from classic resort amenities to an attended lobby, from your own beach club jitney to a pool deck overlooking yachts on the Intracoastal. There are trips you take – and then there are the trips that take you. From Switzerland’s ski-elite slopes to Hawaii’s island sanctuary, these five über-desirable destinations offer great escapes – their one common attribute with South Florida being that, yes, of course, you can stay in high style. Pascal Ollinger

Nic Roldan knows well the cliché of polo as “the sport of kings” – the high-dollar horses, the high-life sponsors, the high-society spectators. Indeed, the Wellington polo player seems to live it. “People think of polo as a lifestyle,” he says. “Fact of the matter is it’s one of the most dangerous sports in the world.” On occasion, he also lends his athletic physique and photogenic face to fashion shoots, where our Contributing Editor Elizabeth Rahe interviewed the model horseman.

FIRST WORDS

The gifts we give to ourselves

I

look for gifts that say South Florida, but all I find is beach debris. A “Sealife Natural Driftwood Bundle,” defined as “a piece of driftwood, seastar and twine,” for $11.99 on Amazon.com. A “Jellyfish on LED Light Stand” for $26.99 on eBay. A set of “Seahorse and Starfish Shadowboxes” for $23.23 on Amazon again. I try to remember the last time I saw a starfish or seahorse on our beaches. Or fancy driftwood. Or jellyfish lit up with LEDs. I can’t. Do any of these gifts really say South Florida to you? Does it seem someone actually from South Florida thought any of them up? If not, when did we offshore our vital gifts-that-say-South-Florida-shore industry? We have so much to give here. How could we have strayed so far from the gentle footsteps of Julia Tuttle, who set the gift bar high for us in the 1880s? The story goes the “Mother of Miami’’ sent a branch of fresh orange blossoms one winter to railroad magnate Henry Flagler, hunkered down up North. Th e story goes on that the railroad builder was so impressed he dug himself out of the dreary snowdrifts and pushed his tracks to Palm Beach, Miami and, for good measure, across the warm and glistening seas to Key West. Tuttle’s simple, brilliant idea has held on through the years. How many of us still send boxes and bags of fresh orange and yellow citrus to friends and family up North? How many of us act surprised when friends and family shake free of their own snowdrifts and show up at our door? (Hopefully, not C.O.D.) We tempt the world with fruit from our winter garden. We should not be surprised when the world arrives to throw us out of Paradise for a few weeks in winter. Or at least out of our beds and onto a sofabed. This being the holiday season, our minds naturally turn to gi fts – and we have found some great ones for this issue, pgs. 25-30. No, you won’t find any seahorses or starfish or fancy driftwood or electric jellyfish here. And while our collection of treasures may not immediately say South Florida, they are certainly gifts that say we care. The gi ftthat truly says South Florida doesn’t come in a box. You won’t find it on a beach, or light stand or shadowbox. It’s the door we leave open to this place we love, the gift we share with the world. Even if it’s from a sofabed. —Mark Gauert mgauert@cityandshore.com

Second Story Bonnet House heads upstairs

for new Private Living Quarters Tour

A

visit to Fort Lauderdale’s Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is always a treasure hunt – learning about the lives and passions of the historic Birch and Bartlett families through the eclectic, art-filled home and intriguing gardens. Now the museum is lifting the veil on the families’ inner sanctum with special tours of the upstairs living quarters, including the master bedroom, guest bedroom, Hugh Taylor Birch bedroom and bridal suite. “Seeing someone’s bedroom always gives you a better sense of their personality,” says Stephen Draft, Bonnet House curator. In the master bedroom visitors will see the ornate antique furniture that was a gift to the original lady of the house, Helen Birch Bartlett, upon her marriage to artist Frederic Bartlett in 1919. Her father, Hugh Taylor Birch, had given the newlyweds 50 acres along the Fort ort Lauderdale coast, where they soon built their Caribbean plantation-style On Treas line Extr home. Six years after Helen’s death in 1925, Frederic married Evelyn Fortune Lilly Bartlett. What to watch when you think there’s nothing on

As you await the next Homeland, or lament the end of Breaking Bad, we’ve got a streaming bet for you straight outta Ireland. Try to imagine a younger Clint Eastwood as a disgraced cop in the stunning coastal town of Galway. Add some rougher edges, and a deep resonant voice perfect for Philip Marlowestyle voiceovers, and you’re getting close to Jack Taylor, hero of the series of the same name. Starring Iain Glen (Game of Th rones, Resident Evil) the Irish TV movies bring crime drama to, if not a whole new level, at least much better accents. Jack may have problems with drink, and may get distracted by women, but he sure seems to know a lot more about solving crime than the police (The Guard) who booted him out. In Galway, when someone turns up missing, or worse, people seem to find Jack. The gulls, the seaside, the quaint provincial streets – and the enigmatic characters who inhabit them – give the fi lms immense charm. Jack also has to work through some family issues; his “mum” and he are estranged. When he ends up in her place after a particularly bad beating by thugs (guns are few and far between in Galway, a kind of charm, too), things don’t improve. When he leaves, he muses to himself in that wonderful brogue about “why parents always seem able to push your buttons.” His answer: “They put them there in the first place.” —John Dolen

Sum O of all Cheers Winterfest Boat Parade numbers add up to holiday fun By Elizabeth Rahe

ne hundred boats gilded to the bulwarks, to the wheelhouses, to the tuna towers. One million spectators watching from the shoreline, from hotels and restaurants, from holiday-trimmed balconies. Th e Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade on Dec. 14 promises to brighten the Fort Lauderdale holiday season once more. Here are some more numbers that help tell the story of this South Florida tradition: 504 Splits and 204 full-size bottles of Moët & Chandon champagne are expected to be popped at the Winterfest Black Tie Ball Dec. 7 at Hard Rock Live, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. 41 Parades have plied Fort Lauderdale waters since 1971. This year makes 42. Each has featured a grand marshal, including Bob Hope, Kelly Ripa, Joan Rivers, Randy Jackson, Donald Trump, Shaq, Alonzo Mourning and Kim Kardashian. This year’s honoree is actress Tori Spelling. 12 Miles is the distance the parade will travel from downtown Fort Lauderdale, east on the New River and north on the Intracoastal Waterway to Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. 2 Parade themes have included the word paradise, including this year’s Passport to Paradise. Look for a plethora of exotic-destination decorations. (The 2002 theme was Pirates in Paradise.) 7,000 parade watchers are expected to flow into Birch State Park, where the Grandstand Viewing Area holds 4,000 reserved seats. There will be free interactive games, live entertainment, food trucks and the Michelob Ultra Culinary Courtyard. (Reserve your seats at winterfestparade.com.) Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade begins 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14, winterfestparade.com, 954-767-0686. CITYANDSHORE.COM

A Vintage Weekend Down to the sea in ships (and cars and aircraft) at Ocean Reef Club

Half the fun of Vintage Weekend at Ocean Reef Club, Dec. 5-8, is watching other people getting there. Vintage yachts fl oat up to the docks at the members-only club in the northern Keys, vintage aircraft buzz the private air strip, vintage cars gleam in a Concours d’Elegance stream on the red carpet. As spectacle, it’s a tour de force on land, at sea, in the air. The members-only policy at the gatehouse drops for this long weekend. Everyone is welcome for Vintage Weekend through a three-night, four-day package at the club’s oceanfront inn. “Vintage Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for people to not only admire the world’s finest conveyances up close, but also to share in a memorable social experience among new and old friends,” says Vintage Weekend Co-founder Vicki Goldstein. “Ocean Reef Club is one of the few places in the world that can host all three modes of vintage transportation by land, sea and air — and also offer flawless hospitality in a stunning setting.” Highlights this year include a Vintage Aircraft Aerobatic Show & Luncheon, a must-see mix off private air show and beach picnic; a Concours d’Elegance-caliber car show (last year’s included a rakish 1938 Jaguar SS100); vintage yacht tours (last year’s included the lovingly restored presidential yacht, Honey Fitz); tours of aircraft (a silvery bullet P-51 Mustang was the Spectator’s Choice) and “Vintage Weekend Goes to the Movies” Cocktail Reception & Dinner Dance round out the day of thunder. Half the fun may be watching other people getting there. Th e rest is being there. Classic cars roll the red carpet at Vintage Weekend at the Ocean Reef Club.

Raimi’s World of Wake Believe

A 20-year-old’s 2 big splash in the competitive world of wakeboarding

Most M o little girls don’t grow up dreaming of becoming the wakeboarding champion of the world. But then, most little girls don’t grow up with a professional barefoot-skiing father. the “I really enjoyed barefooting as a kid, but my father wanted me to try wakeboarding because it was an up-and-coming sport,” says Raimi Merritt, 20, who grew up on Lantana’s Lake Osborne, where a variety of water sports served as “recess” for her and three home-schooled siblings. “My father showed var me a magazine featuring a girl who had won a national championship in wakeboarding. He wanted me m to go to that same tournament.” Merritt entered the contest the following year and won the title. She was 10 years old. “Ever since winning that tournament I had a vision that wakeboarding was what I really wanted to do.” w What a vision it turned out to be. Wh Since turning pro when she was 14, Merritt has won eight International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation world cup events and two world championships (the contests are held every other year), in 2011 and 2013, the latter of which she claimed in September in South Korea – on a broken ankle. She had surgery in October to remove bone fragments and hopes to be fully recovered to return to the IWWF circuit in Australia in March. Merritt lives in Orlando – a mecca of American wakeboarding – with her older sister Mia. On lakes there she perfects flips and spins and dipsy-doodles behind a $150,000 wakeboarding boat powered by a 450-hp engine, courtesy of Nautique, one of her sponsors. Along with being a professional wakeboarder – a fi rst-place fi nish in an IWWF event can earn her as much as $8,000 – Merritt is a sophomore at Valencia Community College in Orlando. She plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida and major in business. “Mia is a fashion designer, and we’ve always talked about doing something together,” Merritt says, “but I still want to remain part of wakeboarding.” How long can she continue to compete at a world-champion level in the physically punishing sport? “It depends on how long your body holds up,” she says. “But I see myself competing for a really long time.” Broken ankle or not. —Dave Wieczorek

Ring in the new year

‘Bridal Playgrounds’ debut at King Jewelers

Few things in life are more magical than shopping for an engagement ring. There’s love, there’s anticipation, there’s a plethora of sparkling diamonds. King Jewelers is extending the magic with the debut of its new Bridal Playground. The store-within-a-store (housed in King’s Aventura and Nashville, Tenn., locations) is a bridal dream come true. Come with or without your spouse and try on sample rings, sip champagne, learn the ins and outs of diamonds, design a custom band and track the progress of your ring from conception to completion. “We want to bring the fun and romance back into shopping for an engagement ring,” says David King, CFO. Couples (or fi ancées) are invited to play with rings, talk to designers and watch the progress of their ring from idea to delivery. King Jewelers even delivers a photo album of your ring, including images of the jeweler melting platinum, the wax figure used for your ring, a diamond setter setting the stone, the fi nal ring and occasionally, the proposal moment. The Kings created the bridal playground in part as a reaction to the rise of online shopping for engagement rings.

“You can’t judge the beauty of a diamond by a certificate,” says David King of online shopping. “You have to see with your eye, what it looks like to you.” “We wanted to make sure we’re giving consumers the right education, going above and beyond the basic info of the 4 c’s (color, carat, clarity and cut) and letting them know about the other important elements of the diamond,” adds Jonathan King, director of sales. Ready to take the plunge? The King brothers report rose gold, halo settings and round- and cushion-cut diamonds are trending, while oval and pear-shaped diamonds are on the rise. —Valerie Schimel The Bridal Playground is available via appointment or walkin basis at King Jewelers: 18265 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura, 305-935-4900, kings1912.com

ON THE MONEY

Happy holidays! Now let’s talk taxes

By Robyn A. Friedman December. A time for family and festivity, pumpkin pie and sugar plums, tinsel and . . . taxes? You bet. Experts say the end of the year is a great time to assess your tax situation and make any necessary tweaks. The bottom line: It’s not too late for savvy taxpayers to save money on their 2013 taxes. “When you talk tax rules to most people, their eyes glaze,” says Mari Adam, a certified financial planner in Boca Raton. “It sounds complicated so they’re going to put it off. But people should just take 15 minutes to think and do one or two things because it really can make a difference.”

Ah,

Here are just a few of the strategies you should be discussing with your tax professional now: Funding your retirement plan: Whether it’s an IRA or a 401(k), you can dramatically cut your tax bill — and help secure your future. Documenting sales tax: “For 2013, you have the ability to deduct sales tax because we don’t have a state income tax, so look at all of your expenses to see what you paid in sales tax,” says Marjorie A. Horwin, CPA, who heads up the Private Client Wealth Services Group at accounting fi rm Morrison, Brown, Argiz & Farra. If you purchased a car in 2013, for example, that could be a sizeable deduction. Harvesting capital gains: Consider selling assets to offset any gains and to make the most of capital gains rates.

42

CITYANDSHORE.COM

Accelerating income: If you’re looking at higher taxes next year — and some higher-income taxpayers are — accelerate income into 2013. Conversely, if you’ll be in a lower tax bracket in 2014, defer year-end bonuses and accelerate deductions. Discussing DOMA:. If you’re a legally married same-sex couple, talking to a tax advisor is crucial. Since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act, you may be able to fi le a joint tax return or be entitled to other federal benefits; Adam says the rules are still in flux. Expensing business property: You can elect a Section 179 deduction to write off the cost of qualified business property purchased in 2013.

he weeks between Th anksgiving and New Year’s Day can be hectic, stressful, happy, disappointing, sad – the whole gamut of human emotion, as well as physically challenging at times. A perfect gift to smooth out the ups and downs is a visit to a spa, for a few hours or the day, or even a week of total relaxation and pampering. South Florida offers many different venues and packages that can be neatly wrapped up in a gift card and presented at the best possible moment. You decide. “What we fi nd more and more is that people like to give experiential gifts, and a spa gift is a gift of different possibilities – massage, luxury Guerlain facials, a myriad of services,” says Bonnie Reuben, a spokesperson for The Spa at Th e Breakers luxury oceanfront hotel in Palm Beach. “It’s a gift of indulgence that the person probably wouldn’t buy for themselves.” Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa at The Galleria in Fort Lauderdale wants to reduce your stress and is offering an extra $30 gift card with every $200 gift card purchased until Dec. 25, says Claire Perkins, spokesperson for the spa,

Lapis Spa features an array of services and with each spa reservation, guests also get access to the spa’s signature Water Journeys and the entire Fontainebleau poolscape – stretching a single tranquil treatment into a full day of rejuvenation and serenity.

MODEL HORSEMAN Third-generation polo player Nic Roldan has written his own history from an early age. Now he reaches for the game’s top rank – a perfect 10.

N

By Elizabeth Rahe

ic Roldan knows well the cliché of polo as “the sport of kings” – the highdollar horses, the high-life sponsors, the high-society spectators. Indeed, the Wellington polo player seems to live it. One of America’s top professionals, the 30-year-old has traveled the world competing in elite tournaments since the age of 15, when he helped win the U.S. Open Polo Championship. He has played in charity matches with royalty, United Kingdom’s Prince William and Prince Harry, and accepted a Best Player trophy from Prince Charles. He comes from a tight-knit polo family – his father and grandfather played the game professionally. On occasion, he lends his athletic physique and photogenic face to fashion shoots, as he did this fall for City & Shore. Rather a perfect cliché. And all part of the game. But according to Roldan, it misses the mark. “People think of polo as a lifestyle,” he says. “Fact of the matter is it’s one of the most dangerous sports in the world. We put our lives on the line every day, the moment we step on the field. It’s a mental sport. It’s a very physical sport. It’s intense.” With eight mounted players swinging long-handled mallets galloping after a small white ball at 35 to 40 mph, danger comes with the territory – which happens to be about nine football fi elds in size. Playing high-level polo, Roldan says, requires a total commitment and a continual “fine-tuning of the horses and the players.” His own fine-tuning includes working out with a trainer four or five times a week and putting in an equal number of riding workouts. A team of four helps train and care Watch for his horses, which he says are “80 percent of the game.” Polo players change a video of mounts after each of the six periods, called chukkers. For an important match, our photo shoot Roldan will bring along 8-10 horses, also called polo ponies. He owns about with Nic Roldan at two dozen horses in Wellington, and five or six in Argentina. Thoroughbreds he buys off the racetrack for as much as $20,000 and trains them for polo. “The way we get the horses ready for a big tournament is the way an athlete would get ready for a marathon,” he says. “There’s a special routine that the horses do every day, morning and afternoon. It’s a lot of work, a lot of expense, but it’s what we love to do.”

R

oldan was born in Buenos Aires to an Argentine polo family. His father, Raul, played for the Sultan of Brunei. His mother, Dee, an interior decorator, is of German heritage. Th e family moved to the horse-loving community of Wellington when Nic was 2 months old. He was riding and swinging a mallet by age 4, playing polo by 8, and competing professionally by 14. A gifted athlete from an early age, Roldan played many other sports, including ice hockey in the Junior Olympics. Becoming the youngest player to win the U.S. Open catapulted him into the polo profession. In the game’s handicapping system, which rates players from -2 to 10 goals, Roldan reached 9 goals several years ago and is currently rated at 8. He aspires to reach the lofty 10-goal mark. (Matches are categorized by adding up the goal ratings of the players; the highest matches are 20 goals and up.) “There are only five 10-goalers in the world and no American 10-goalers,” he says. “It’s obviously a huge accomplishment to be able to reach that level.” He plays on the Audi team for Marc and Melissa Ganzi, owners of Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington. Marc Ganzi says Roldan is one of the few American players who have the talent and skill to make it to 10 goals. “He has a combination of skills you rarely see in a polo player, as he possesses power, finesse and incredible shot-making,” Ganzi says. “He has a fi erce desire to win whenever he steps on the fi eld, but at the same time he also knows how to keep the team relaxed with his easy-going way and great sense of humor.” Roldan is a founding member of Aspen Polo Club, which the Ganzis are developing in Aspen, Colo., to host summer matches. He is also involved with Polo Gear, a Wellingtonbased supplier of equipment and apparel for the sport, including the Nic Roldan Elite Free Shoulder Saddle. Created with a team of saddle makers, equine chiropractors and veterinarians, the saddle is designed

to facilitate player positioning while improving the movement and comfort of the horse, he says. He sees himself as an American ambassador for his sport. In October he traveled to Tianjin, China, to represent the United States in the Super Nations Cup. England edged the United States, 14-13, in overtime to play Hong Kong in the finals, where Hong Kong prevailed. “Unfortunately, my team was not successful in winning the championship,” Roldan wrote in his blog, “but we were all very happy to be a part of this time when polo is growing so much globally – especially in this region.” Roldan says the key to building interest in polo is educating the public and making the game more accessible. “It’s not the easiest sport to understand, so if we educate people the right way, they realize it’s a great sport, it’s a fast sport. The horses are beautiful. There’s no reason why it can’t grow more.” He talks about launching a polo academy in Wellington and then expanding. “I’d like to open up academies all over the United States where young kids, if they have an interest in riding or playing polo, can do it without having to buy horses.” Roldan remains close to his parents, who live two minutes away in Wellington, and his sister, Lupe, and her family, who live in Dubai and London. “Family for me is everything. They come first always. They are my best friends, my love and what got me to where I am today.” Although not in a relationship at the moment, he says he hopes to have his own family eventually, perhaps pass the polo tradition on to a fourth generation. “But for now I will enjoy spending time with my sister’s new little son, Santos. He’s the love of my life.” His philanthropic efforts focus on children. He was the first polo ambassador for JustWorld International, a Wellington-based charity of the equestrian community that focuses on aid for impoverished children in Cambodia, Honduras and Guatemala. He also has participated in Rally for Kids with Cancer events, which support cancer research, treatment and care for kids. The holidays will be spent, as always, with family, and then Roldan will focus on the Wellington highgoal polo season Jan. 5 - April 20 at International Polo Club Palm Beach. He celebrates his 31st birthday Dec. 4, and he is determined to make the most of the next decade, which he calls his prime years, in his quest for a 10-goal rating. “The last 10 years have been amazing, but I’ve been building up my string of horses and building up my reputation. It’s a long process to become one of the top polo players. I think the next 10 years are the most important for me.” Ten years to reach a perfect 10 – sounds like a cliché Roldan could live with.

MODEL HORSEMAN Third-generation polo player Nic Roldan has written his own history from an early age. Now he reaches for the game’s top rank – a perfect 10. By Elizabeth Rahe

N

ic Roldan knows well the cliché of polo as “the sport of kings” – the highdollar horses, the high-life sponsors, the high-society spectators. It’s intense.” With eight mounted players swinging long-handled mallets galloping after a small white ball at 35 to 40 mph, danger comes with the territory – which happens to be about nine football fields in size. DESIGNERS WITHOUT BORDERS

I

By Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub

nterior designers and architects rarely get a chance to create rooms exactly the way they envision. Clients may reject their ideas because they are too different, or too expensive The exceptions come when they can participate in a designer show house, or when a client trusts them enough to follow their instincts. Then they are really free to show off their creativity. We asked five design professionals to explain why the rooms they selected in these pages are their favorite examples of such work, created without constraint.

Joseph Fava loves the soothing color in this room contrasted with bold artwork and the sculptural Arco floor lamp by Y Lighting.

Designer: Joseph Fava Photographer: Craig Denis Backstory: Fava designed this sitting room in an upstairs suite for a college student in her parents’ Towson, Md., home. “They allowed me to experiment and to do what I thought would work,” he says. “If I proposed this lamp for some clients, it might be out of their comfort zone. This client wasn’t micromanaging.” Why favorite: He loves the fresh color palette and texture differences – vinyl on the ottoman, Ultrasuede on the sofa, the sculptural metal lamp and the shag rug. “I was trying to give the room a retro vibe,” he says. “I love the art over the sofa. It almost makes fun of pop art.” Inspiration: The fabric on the pillows has a mid-century feel that Fava echoed in the acid-green throw and the teal of the walls and rug. What makes a great room: The unexpected. It is an element in the space that is uncommon and hasn’t been done before. 70

Designer: Giselle Loor and Brett Sugerman Photographer: Barry Grossman Backstory: Clients with three children wanted to fit as many people as possible in the dining room of their Weston home because they entertain often, host charity events and have large Shabbat dinners with friends. They asked for the room to be elegant and practical with a wow factor. The upholstery is leather for easy cleaning and the two custom tables were designed so guests wouldn’t be too crowded. Why favorite: “We love that the room is such an intimate and elegant setting and how the light goes through the sheers. The whole space is practically enveloped in sheers. We used some of our favorite things – chairs and benches in a formal setting. The sconces that appear to be floating really make a statement behind the sheers.” Inspiration: The family’s lifestyle. They tried to tone down the Mediterranean-style house and make it more contemporary. But the sheers honored the architecture by showing the archways and architectural elements. What makes a great room: “Function. I think it’s important that you have a beautiful room, but a room doesn’t work unless it meets the client’s needs and there is not enough room to pull out chairs,” Loor says. “Everything else is secondary.” Giselle Loor says the sheer draperies and the chandeliers make this dining room perfect for entertaining.

Joseph Pubillones was inspired to design this room by the crewel fabric used on the brown and white throw pillows. The large H comes from a remodeled Hermès store.

Designer: Joseph Pubillones Photographer: Daniel Newcomb Backstory: When Pubillones was asked to design a room in a Key West style home for the 2013 Red Cross Designer’s Show House in West Palm Beach, he rejected the typical tropical vibrant colors for shades of sand and driftwood. He illustrated how to mix patterns with a Moroccan patterned dhurrie rug, a zebra-print fabric on an art deco-style chair and a tone-on-tone fabric for a Chippendale settee. Large-scale pieces include an “H” from a remodeled Hermès store and a large pottery lamp from the 1950s. He covered the front of the chests in reclaimed wood. Why favorite: Choosing the right scale for a small room makes it seem larger. He says this 12 by 15 room with three seating areas could be a case study for a living room in a small urban condo or apartment. Inspiration: He was inspired by the hand-embroidered Sedona ikat from Beacon Hill done in collaboration with Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, founders of Ankasa. The design illustrates how to mix different patterns – using the same color palette and varying print sizes. What makes a great room: “You have to have a combination of ordinary things and a few extraordinary things,” he says. “Not every piece has to shout. The majority should be a backdrop with one or two extraordinary pieces.” 74

Designer/architect: Lachmee Chin (designer) and Kurt Dannwolf (architect) Photographer: Ken Hayden Backstory: This elegant wine room was designed for snowbirds from Montreal who own a penthouse on the 68th floor of the Four Seasons Residences in Miami. The room, about the size of a one-car garage, was designed to hold more than 1,100 bottles of wine. The most prestigious wines are displayed on their side with the label facing forward so it can be read. The clients wanted the wine room to be a transition between the open living room and the home theater. A heavy soundproof curtain that retracts into the wall allows the media room to be shut off when movies are shown. Why favorite: “They gave us a long leash,” Chin says. “They wanted a homey look but with clean lines. We presented three boards – one very comfortable, one outside the box and one in between. They went with the most extravagant plan that was outside their comfort level.” Inspiration: The design team was inspired by the wine collection. They used a variety of materials – wood, stone, metal and glass. What makes the design unique is the Black Kosmus Granite walls, a tactile stone of black and silver with a bumpy texture. The beige limestone floor has a brown vein. Both are from Opustone. What makes a great room: “A great room is something you go into again and again and keep noticing different details,” Dannwolf says.

SKI RESORT ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND

The bubbly climate may be described as “champagne,” but when you’re on the slopes of St. Moritz, you are breathing rarified air. One of the most exclusive and renown winter resorts, St. Moritz doesn’t just sound … well, more ritzy … its name is so synonymous with elegance it’s even trademarked. Cosmopolitan ambience and celebrity magnetism certainly abound, but no more so than its 6,090-foot-high perch in a breathtaking landscape flush with mountain lakes (horseraces are held on some of them) and almost always graced with sun and snow. Th en there’s its unparalleled pedigree as the birthplace of both Alpine holiday tourism and winter sport, having hosted two Winter Olympics. However, it wasn’t its ski trails (now numbering over 200) but its therapeutic springs that fi rst made St. Moritz famous. Spa-seekers came as early as the Middle Ages, and if they were religious, actually were granted total absolution for doing so by Pope Leo X in 1519. Luxurious accommodations: You can’t go wrong with any of the Big Five hotels – all 5-star, all stunningly scenic: Badrutt’s Palace Hotel (badruttspalace.com), Carlton Hotel (carlton-stmortiz.ch), Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains (kempinski.com/stmoritz), Kulm Hotel (kulm.com) and Suvretta House (suvrettahouse.ch).

HISTORIC CITY DUBROVNIK, CROATIA

Crkva Sv. Vlaha

B. Kragić

Almost 20 years aft er Croatia’s hard-fought independence, the restored Dubrovnik continues to live off the spoils of war – tourism. Topping the cliff s of the Dalmatian coastline, massive medieval walls that long ago shielded “the Pearl of the Adriatic” from invaders now invite armies of tourists to gaze out over the sea or turn inland into Old Town, a living treasure trove of history and Venetian Gothic architecture. There, the Visia Dubrovnik 5D Th eatrum provides an unconventional look back. Th e “3-D Time Travel” attraction employs lasers, wind machines and rumble seats to tell the tale of a holographic scientist – all projected onto an actual waterfall. Luxurious accommodations: Th e 5-star, cliff-side Hotel Bellevue offers a rare fi nd in the rocky coast – a private stretch of beach. Its similarly starred sister property, the recently renovated Hotel Excelsior, is celebrating its centenary (both at adriaticluxuryhotels.com).

MODERN CITY PANAMA CITY, PANAMA The canal is still a must-see, but since the United States gave it back in 1999, the city is experiencing rebirth as an aspiring metropolis – immediately visible in the view of its imposing skyline from Amador Causeway, an island gateway and weekend hotspot, and reflected as well in the approximately 10-fold boom in hotel rooms, including new hotshots like Trump, Waldorf-Astoria and Hard Rock. This is not the fi rst rebirth for the Panamanian capital, however. Th e original city was sacked and burned by the pirate Henry Morgan in the 1600s, and rebuilt in nearby Casco Viejo two years later. Th e site of the ruins, Panama Viejo, is a national park and top draw for tourists. Luxurious accommodations: Go big at Th e Bristol (thebristol.com), an urbane tower in the fi nancial district that Condé Nast Traveler repeatedly names “Best Hotel in Panama.” Go small at Canal House (canalhousepanama. com), an elegant three-room mansion in the Casco Viejo historical district and a New York Times “Editor’s Pick.”

PACIFIC ISLAND KAUAI, HAWAII Could it be that Kauai is called “Hawaii’s Island of Discovery” because it is the least-discovered of the big four islands? It is the least-visited and the least-populous compared to its southern neighbors – Maui, the Big Island and the relative megalopolis that lies the closest, Oahu. Kauai is also described as the smallest, the most rural, the most secluded and, pardon the oxymoronic vernacular, the most chill – which could explain its cachet as a celebrity hideaway. Comparisons abound, yes, but Kauai is virtually beyond compare as a lush island paradise – not for nothing does it bear the a.k.a., “Garden Isle.” The oldest of the islands, it’s great P.R. for erosion – from the eye-popping cliff s of the Napali Coast (seen in Jurassic Park) to the multicolored, 3,500-feet deep Waimea Canyon (“the Grand Canyon of the Pacifi c”) to its rep as the island with the most miles of sandy beach. Luxurious accommodations: Renovated in 2009, the St. Regis Princeville Resort (stregisprinceville.com) is arguably the island’s most splendid. Spectacular sunset vistas from the lobby lounge may be enough to make you a believer.

One of only two populated isles of a large archipelago off the coast of North Africa, Madeira is well-known for its wine. Perhaps more alluring for visitors and locals alike is the source of its nickname, “Island of the Eternal Spring” – a climate with highs hovering around the 70s year-round. The island, an autonomous region of Portugal, is also called the “Garden in the Atlantic,” largely due to an ambitious aqueduct system that delivers northern rainfall to the drier south and keeps vegetation flourishing all year. The levadas, as the mini-canals are called, also create a hiker’s paradise – their maintenance paths provide level trails through the mountainous terrain. Luxurious accommodations: In Madeira’s 5-centuryold capital and largest city, Funchal, Th e Cli ff Bay (portobay.com) overlooks Funchal Bay from atop a natural promontory. Th e 5-star hotel’s restaurant, Il Gallo d’Oro, has its own star – the island’s fi rst and only from Michelin – which it has held since 2009.

GREATNESS Wines to bring cheer to any recipient on your shopping list

T

By Bob Hosmon and Mark Gauert

he 2012 Natura Sauvignon Blanc ($11), an organic white produced from grapes grown in Chile’s justly famous Casablanca Valley, is clean and crisp on the palate and one of the best value sauvignon blancs I’ve ever tasted. -B.H. Produced in South Africa’s Cape region, the 2011 Simonsig Cabernet Shiraz ($12) is a uniquely delightful red blend. The recipient of such a gift may never have tasted a wine like this before, but will be glad he or she did, thanks to you. -B.H. From California’s Monterey County I’d opt for the 2011 Wrath Ex Anima Pinot Noir ($30). Th e wine is first-rate and also comes with an interesting background: Dr. Michael Thomas, the winery’s proprietor, is an archaeologist and university professor. -B.H. For those someones who are very special on your gift list I recommend the exquisite 2010 Nickel & Nickel C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon ($100). Its home is in Napa, but it’s one of the very best cabs produced anywhere. -B.H. For anyone on an Especially Good List this year, a trio of 2010 Cabernet Sauvignons from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, notably the CASK 23 ($225), S.L.V. ($125) and FAY ($110) estate cabs, would impress, too. The S.L.V., from the vineyard that produced the epic “Judgment of Paris’’ victor in 1976, unwraps an especially tasteful gift of black cherries, blueberries, cedar and spice. -M.G. And if price is truly no object, there’s the 2010 Chateau Mouton Rothschild ($1,200+). With its Jeff Koons label and its 97 rating from Robert Parker, who could hope for anything more? -B.H.

Attorney Mark A. Tepper, Esq. Representing victims of stockbroker fraud Legal tips ! ! ! ! ! ! !

T

ough economic times call for a logical and sensible approach to investing, and it’s vital to choose a broker that represents your best interests. Many investors — especially the elderly — place complete trust in stockbrokers and money managers but sometimes misconduct and mismanagement can betray that trust. Over my 35 years as an investor advocate, I’ve represented hundreds of clients who, as investors, felt brokers had betrayed their trust. In these cases, divided loyalty is a recurring theme — especially if the broker is a friend or family member. That personal connection with the broker may sometimes even outweigh the frustration, disappointment and resentment that can accompany the financial loss due to a misguided recommendation. The client-stockbroker relationship is founded in trust, and a belief that our interests will be protected. Unfortunately that’s not always the case.

Seniors beware The drop in interest rates has impacted the elderly — especially those on fixed incomes who depend

Trust, but verify. Don’t blame yourself. Financial firms have a duty to supervise broker activities in your account. When in doubt, opt out — especially from cold callers offering “the opportunity of a lifetime.” If it doesn’t “feel” right” pass on a “one-time opportunity.” Ignore “if you don’t act now” high-pressure sales tactics. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You may be eligible to recover damages based on stockbroker misconduct.

heavily on investment for income. In this financial climate, seniors can become targets of aggressive money managers promising higher returns through alternative investments. If you have trouble evaluating a good investment from a bad one, and do not receive the proper guidance from your broker, that combination can make you an easy target of broker fraud. An 82-year-old client claimed his broker put him in a bad investment, and it cost him thousands of dollars; another client, who knew very little about the stock market, discovered the money earmarked for a certificate of deposit was diverted to stocks because he didn’t understand the recommendation. Remember, if a broker doesn’t tell you the full story, gives false information or recommends something that isn’t right for you, then that could be misconduct. As a consumer, recognize the red flags — like unexpected losses in your account. If the explanation given doesn’t make sense (whether you understand investing or not) get another opinion. Ask your broker how he or she is compensated, what costs

are associated with your broker’s recommendation, and what are its risks. Your biggest concern is how much can you afford to lose. A sure thing doesn’t exist. If your money is managed properly, you won’t be over exposed to risk. If you’re told to expect at least an eight percent return on your income portfolio, make sure you’re not buying blue sky.

Hard facts A financial firm is obligated to supervise all of its customer accounts, and is responsible for detecting improprieties. If you believe you’re a victim, don’t judge yourself too harshly. It’s not a time for denial, but a time for action and re-evaluation. You may be eligible to recover damages based on broker misconduct. A competent attorney can independently evaluate your claim. After a review, you’re in a better position to know whether or not to file a claim based on facts. This action puts the burden of thinking about your broker relationship in the past, plus you can move forward with confidence, making a wise business decision that will benefit you for years to come.

POUR ARTISTS Wine tastings, museum tours mix at ‘Art of Wine’ series at Boca Raton Museum of Art

“W

ine can of their wits the wise beguile, make the sage frolic and the serious smile,” wrote the Greek poet Homer. Wine also can provide a new twist to art appreciation, as participants in “The Art of Wine” series at the Boca Raton Museum of Art are discovering. Museum curators and wine expert Stephanie Miskew joined forces beginning in October for wine tastings and museum tours that explore the fi ner points of both artwork and the fruit of the vine. Th e monthly series will run on select Wednesdays through March. What Spanish wine should one serve with a Picasso? The colors of spring inspire painters; what flavor of wines would pair best with those colors? “The Art of Wine” series will answer those questions, as well as provide commentary on artistic works in the museum’s permanent collection. Cost for each program is $35 for museum members and $40 for non-members. Reservations are required. —Kingsley Guy Sandro Chia (Italian, 1946), Bacchus, 2000, color etching, ed. 28/50, 15 x 11 1/4 inches, Gift of the Artist, Permanent Collection 2006.035
