72 In this age of music everywhere, in the comfort

et me ask you this: Is there such a thing as too much music? Don’t we have more of it than we need – or even want? Can we not now listen anywhere we go, or go practically anywhere without being smacked in the ears? And, more importantly, who’s going to be the one to tell Iggy Pop he’s got to stop (or at least to put his shirt back on)? Surely not since the first caveman sang the first “ooga” of Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling has there been sooo much music heard by sooo many people. If Citizen Kane were made today, you just know the name on the sled would be Earbud. Even as I write this, I hear a piano riff coming from somewhere – oh, that’s you? Take the call, I’ll wait… That fingertip accessibility is the irony behind the decline of the old music biz when there are more musicians being heard than ever. I hear or hear of a new one every day. Consider just one source — iTunes radio. At last count, it offers 6,500 nonstop music streams in 21 genres (International/World wins with 838; Blues, the loser, 46). How many musicians must it take just to fuel that? Don’t even think about YouTube or the zillion other websites, or satellite and cable radio. There’s even music on old-fashioned broadcast radio (OK, in South Florida, that’s debatable). And almost all of it is free. Yet in this age of music everywhere, in the comfort and convenience of wherever you are and whatever you do, The Concert is still music’s magic time. There is nothing like a

and convenience of wherever you are and whatever you do, the live concert is still music’s magic time. And this summer, from tuxedoed Justin Timberlake and rapper extraordinaire Jay-Z to Beyoncé and beyond, there’s going to be a lot of magic here. 86

live show, and apparently no amount of mp3's or outlandish ticket prices can change that. This summer, South Florida venues will put on over 60 concerts; the most by far – about 20 – will be at Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm. And how many South Floridians do you think will fork over a day or two’s pay to brave the sticky heat and squeeze into a stadium seat to take in the season’s only supersized extravaganza – a tuxedoed Justin Timberlake and rapper extraordinaire Jay-Z closing out their Legends of the Summer tour Aug. 16 at Sun Life Stadium? In Timberlake’s case, the draw may be as much the result of an epic marketing blitz as the music itself. After six years off, he released his smash comeback album, The 20/20 Experience, “on one of the most effective global marketing/ promotion campaigns in pop-culture history,” Billboard says. Stoked by a savvy social media strategy, the JT machine targeted only the big bangs, like the Grammys. On the heels of debut single Suit & Tie, the exposure barrage went ballistic n February with a double Grammy whammy, as the song’s in knockout performance during the telecast was echoed by repeated plays of his Bud Light Platinum commercial. Pumping it up was the emergence of his new look, all sophisticated and slicked-back, evoking the black-tie style of a ’50s crooner (think Bobby Darin) amplified by the retro big band behind him. That’s where the image and the 20/20 sound part ways, though. JT’s ’70s-era falsetto glides and

MAKING MAGIC On the set of the sultry mob drama Magic City, where the real magic is in the details BY DEBORAH WILKER On the Miami set of Magic City, it doesn’t take much to get the show’s star, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in the right mood.

“You just kinda walk around here and the attention to detail is such that I put on my tie, and my awesome suits, I step onto my set – and I can practically hear Frank Sinatra singing in the background.” The sumptuous1959 mob drama, beginning its second season on STARZ, follows the romance and action at the glamorous Miramar Playa Hotel – a setting based loosely on the mid-century glory days of The Fontainebleau, Eden Roc and other Miami Beach destinations. Morgan (Supernatural, P.S. I Love You, Grey’s Anatomy) plays a kind of timeless movie hero on the show– a family man forced to deal with the devil. “He’s definitely straddling that line,” Morgan says of his character, Miramar hotel owner Ike Evans. “I definitely

Peak experience Himalayan trek reaches beyond the mountaintop

On day nine of her 12-day trek in the Himalayas, after

overcoming a violent stomach illness, dehydration and the mental confusion of oxygen deprivation, Jen Klaassens looked at the “steepest of the steepest” ascent to Kala Patthar Peak in Nepal and said, “Are you kidding me?” Still, she made it to the 18,200-foot summit and learned a few lessons in the process. “I learned I had strength and perseverance I didn’t know I had,” says Klaassens, vice president of programs for The Wasie Foundation, based in Fort Lauderdale. One week after returning home, she was still processing the lifechanging experience. Klaassens and 44 other women undertook The Freedom Climb, a ministry of Christian-based Operation Mobilization, to raise funds and awareness about women and children who are exploited, enslaved, oppressed and trafficked. The team also

included fellow South Floridians Tina Yeager, of Deerfield Beach Tina Yeager, (director of Freedom Debbie Dingle, Climb USA at Operation on Jen Klaassens Mobilization); Jill Taylor,, of Deerfield and Jill Taylor Beach and Debbie Dingle, e, of Boca Raton. The climb raised more than $190,000 00 for f OM efforts ff t to t fight ht exploitation. l it ti The women had trained since January in order to reach Mount Everest South Base Camp, but an intestinal illness that struck nearly all the climbers forced a change in plans. Still, 24 of the women climbed to Kala Patthar for the awe-inspiring view of Mount Everest. Klaassens characterizes the mountain as symbolic on so many levels – it represented personal growth, sacrifice, but most of all, “fighting this fight of the disgusting filth of human trafficking.” The day the women summited, 10 men in Kathmandu, Nepal, were arrested in a sting operation for trafficking. “That made it all come full circle,” Klaassens says. “It made all the blood, sweat and tears worth it.” For more information or to donate, visit thefreedomclimb.net. SKY HIGH Ultra-luxury condominium prices are going through the roof BY ROBYN A. FRIEDMAN You might have heard that South Florida’s real estate market is on the rebound. Sales are up in many neighborhoods, as are prices. What you might not have heard is just how well one particular sector of the market is doing — ultra-luxury condominiums. That market is absolutely booming. After a number of years perhaps best described as sluggish, the ultra-luxury condominium market in South Florida — the epicenter of the condo bust — has roared back. No one knows this better than Mark Zilbert, president and CEO of Zilbert Realty Group in Miami Beach. After all, Zilbert’s firm was responsible for brokering the record-setting sale of a penthouse unit at The Setai in Miami Beach — for a whopping $27 million, the most expensive condominium resale in the southeastern United States to date, Zilbert says. But that’s just the beginning, since higher sales are about to hit the record books as newly constructed condominiums, which have been sold by developers but not fully constructed yet, begin to close. “The past 12 months has really been an amazing time here,” Zilbert says. “The overall averages in the market are at an all-time high

on the shore — even higher than the condo boom.” The ultra-luxury condominium market — sales of $10 million and more — is being driven by a number of factors. Buyers from all over the world are flocking to South Florida and particularly Miami — some seeking sun, excitement or an easy business gateway to Latin America, while others are seeking a safe haven for their money. These are “real” buyers — end-users who plan to use the condos for themselves and their families — not speculators. And as demand has risen, so have prices. “There’s a great demand for exceptional properties, but we’re really at a point where there’s not a lot of the very best inventory available,” Zilbert says. “We’re talking about people of extreme wealth, and when they find something they want, they’ll pay whatever it takes. They’ve got the money.” Today, South Florida is a Mecca for buyers from Latin America, Europe, Russia and, increasingly, from the United States — particularly second-home buyers from New York who are propelling these mansion-in-the-sky prices to new heights. And, compared to prices in other major cities, luxury units in South Florida are a virtual bargain. “In general, Miami has a lower price with respect to the rest of the world,” says Edgardo Defortuna, president of Fortune International and the developer of Jade Signature, a 192-unit condominium in Sunny Isles Beach at which prices range from $1.7 million to $25 million. “While prices have gone up compared to what they were a year or two ago, they are still significantly less than what you can buy something for in New York, Rio or São Paulo.” Indeed. An opulent penthouse at the Pierre Hotel in New York City just hit the market for a cool $125 million. The 16-room unit has five bedrooms, six full baths, three partial baths and encompasses the entire 41st, 42nd and 43rd floors, offering 360-degree views of Manhattan. So what does the future hold for South Florida’s ultra-luxury condo market? Will development of these super-towers creep north into Broward and Palm Beach Counties? At least one industry expert thinks so. “Potentially Broward has a future because the land is there,” says Zilbert, who pointed to Pompano Beach and Hollywood as possible locations. “It will become much more commonplace to be in these outlying areas, and what is now an ‘off’ market could very much become an ‘on’ market.” Dezer Development broke ground in April on Porsche Design Tower Miami in Sunny Isles Beach, an ultra-luxury, 60-story tower where units are priced from $4.5 million to $25 million.

Pieces of cake Entrepreneurs add gluten-free batter to their no-mix cupcake fixings When South Florida entrepreneurs Leslie Kaplan and Carolyn Shulevitz wanted to take the mess out of homemade cupcakes, they launched Ready. Set.Cupcake! – frozen, no-mix cake batter and buttercream frosting packaged in thaw-andsqueeze pastry bags. When they wanted to take the gluten out of cupcakes, they formulated glutenfree, dairy-free, vegan chocolate cake batter. Kaplan is a graduate of Florida International University’s School of Hospitality Management and former manager of Carrousel Yacht, and Shulevitz is a professional chef and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. Combining their talents they developed formulas for chocolate and vanilla batters and buttercreams without preservatives, trans-fat or hydrogenated oils. There are no bowls to clean up – you just squeeze the batter from the pastry bag into muffin cups and pipe the frosting onto the cooled cupcakes. The gluten-free batter idea grew out of their experience with food sensitivities in their own children. Kaplan’s son Jared, now 14, suffered for years with stomach problems, joint pain and “brain fog,” but she said his health and focus improved when she eliminated the wheat protein from his diet. Kaplan and Shulevitz, who call their company The Piping Gourmets, plan to launch two more certified gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan products to their line – vanilla Ready.Set.Cupcake! batter and frozen thaw-andserve whoopie pies. — Elizabeth Rahe

Pet Project Celebrities join in American Dog Rescue campaign Delray Beach philanthropist Arthur Benjamin is enlisting some familiar faces to promote

his American Dog Rescue Foundation this summer – actress Taryn Manning and red-carpet host Melissa Rivers. Manning, who has appeared in Hustle and Flow, 8 Mile, Crazy/Beautiful, Law & Order: SVU and dozens of other TV and film projects, also had a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart last fall, Send Me Your Love. This summer she appears in the Netflix original series Orange Is the New Black. Rivers interviews red carpet celebrities for E! Entertainment Television and stars with her mother, Joan Rivers, on the WE tv reality series, Joan & Melissa: Joan Taryn Manning Knows Best? She also works behind the camera, serving as executive producer of E! Entertainment’s Fashion Police. Both women are supporting ADRF’s mission statement, No Dog Without a Home, through a summertime social media fundraising campaign. “The numerous efforts of American Dog Rescue encouraging others to get involved and make a difference is truly inspiring to me, as a devoted animal lover and mother to my furry children, Mile and Lola,” Rivers says. Funds raised from the campaign will help support ADRF’s many projects, including reuniting American troops with their pets from overseas, expanding and improving animal shelters, supporting the timely rescue of abandoned pets after disasters: and providing proper vet care and medical attention to animals in need. “It is so powerful that a fundraising campaign is able to offer people from around the country the opportunity to help,” Manning says. “There is no doubt that we will make a difference in the lives of animals.” — Elizabeth Rahe American Dog Rescue Foundation, americandogrescue.org, 888-262-4753.

What to watch when there’s nothing on Spiral, or Engrenages in French, provides hours and hours of splendid drama. With its gritty backdrop, crack ensemble cast and realism it recalls the early days of NYPD Blue – only in contemporary Paris. Begin with the first episode from season one (2005) and if you’re a crime thriller buff, I almost guarantee you’ll make it all the way through the seasons now available. The unfamiliar justice system – a prosecuting attorney comes to each crime scene, and then presides over the chief homicide detective, assigning the case to a judge – is an easy adjustment. Soon enough, you’ll be involved in all the delicious spirals unfolding, not only each segment’s central case, but continuing story-lines in the lives of the judges, attorneys and detectives and their wives and mistresses. Yes, this is R-rated material. There’s not a predictable character in the bunch. See all the trash high and low that Paris can offer – and how the city’s finest cope. They’re not always saintly, but their intentions and actions are entertaining on lots of different levels. —John Dolen Online at cityandshore.com: Another hidden TV gem

Celestial Computing

Outsourcing to the cloud can make business sense Any business owner who has not heard about the cloud may be living under one. Cloud computing solutions for email, file storage and business applications are ubiquitous – and growing. According to the technology research firm Gartner, by 2014 information technology organizations in 30 percent of Global 1000 companies will broker two or more cloud services, up from 5 percent today. Andy Wiggins, managing partner at the South Florida information technology services company Integrated Technology Corporate Solutions, agrees the cloud is here to stay. For many companies transferring some operations to cloud-based services – which are hosted on servers offsite – can increase efficiency and reduce costs, he says. “The businesses don’t have to buy all the hardware and software,” Wiggins says. “It’s like leasing a car. You’re leasing the server and the applications.” Wiggins cautions that cloud computing is not for every business or function, however. Data stored in the cloud resides on servers shared by many other users, which can make it inappropriate for businesses that deal with sensitive information, such as health care providers, s, or the legal or financial services industries. Also, relying on cloud solutions means if the cloud goes down, a business could be “dead in the water,” he says. Such an outage occurred last December when Amazon Web eb Services encountered a problem that caused a disruption in Netflix service. To help prevent such interruptions and provide for security, Wiggins advises going with big-name providers – he g in mentions Microsoft, Rackspace and Google – and understanding ding the services they provide. in a t “If a company’s needs fit the cloud, we recommend it,” t,” he says. “Every business should explore re e der r cloud computing.” i fo v

Innovative Hip Replacement Surgery: Minimally Invasive Direct Anterior Surgery There may be a number of reasons for persistent hip pain. When the pain interferes with day-today functioning, and limits a person’s ability to walk normally, sit comfortably or perform daily activities, it’s time to seek medical advice. In some cases, pain can be resolved with conservative treatments such as ice, physical

or injections. In other cases, surgery becomes necessary. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s, Orthopaedic Surgeon Juan Suarez, MD, specializes in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and says it is important to evaluate each patient to determine a treatment approach that is best for him or her. “We perform a thorough evaluation of the patient through a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and other imaging to evaluate the cause of hip pain, Dr. Suarez said. “After a thorough examination, if the patient is a candidate for hip replacement surgery, we ensure that he or she fully understands what to expect before, during and after the procedure.

of assistive devices such as canes and walkers is also substantially reduced. In contrast, the average recovery time with traditional hip replacement surgery is two to six months, making the direct anterior hip replacement surgery an appealing alternative.

Juan Suarez, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Physical Therapy Physical therapy is the key to recovering mobility Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a rehabilitation program with techniques that facilitate patients’ recovery. After physical therapy, patients can usually return to recreational pastimes such as cycling, golf, skiing, tennis and horseback riding. The risk of dislocation is also less using the direct anterior technique. Patients are not required to follow strict precautions as are necessary following other traditional surgical methods.

To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicorida.org.

Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of few facilities offering patients a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery called “direct anterior. This approach enables the surgeon to insert the hip prosthesis through a small incision at the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or back where the surgeon has to cut through muscles and tendons. Faster Recovery Due to smaller incisions and less muscle trauma, patients recover faster with the direct anterior approach than with traditional hip replacement surgery. In some instances, patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities in as little as two weeks. Patients also endure a much shorter hospital stay and report less pain, which reduces the need for pain medication. The use

HIGHER AUTHORITY

Paley Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center treats those hoping to lengthen limbs, or become taller BY NANCY McVICAR Caitlyn, a teen born with dwarfism, wanted to be five inches taller. Adam’s

parents were told the only solution for their son’s short thigh bone was to cut off his leg and fit him with a prosthesis. Doctors also recommended amputation to the parents of Jade and Aynslie, both 19 months, because each had a lower leg deformity with the foot turned backwards. All became patients of Dr. Dror Paley, director of the Paley Advanced Limb Lengthening Institute at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, whose surgical skills will help them live their lives, limbs intact. He also treats physically healthy people who want to be Dr. Dror Paley taller, surgically breaking their legs and gradually lengthening them a millimeter or so a day over a period of months – a painful and expensive process – about $80,000 – not covered by insurance. Paley, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, has been performing limb-saving procedures for 25 years, and since bringing his expertise to South Florida four years ago, has broadened the area’s reputation as a medical tourism destination. Patients have sought him out from Abu Dhabi and Israel to Australia and Scotland. “We get people from many different countries, more children than adults,” Paley says. “Not a lot of doctors do [the procedure] at the level of complexity that we do it.” He has established the Paley Foundation which helps patients with non-medical expenses – such as travel – that are not covered by insurance, brings doctors from other countries to learn the techniques and has sponsored mission trips to Haiti and Nicaragua. Lengthening a limb involves surgery and extensive physical therapy. The surgeon cuts through the bone and attaches an external adjustable fixator, a cage of sorts, around the leg with pins to hold it in place. The gap between the two pieces of broken bone begins to fill in with new bone. By adjusting the distance incrementally, a quarter of a millimeter four times a day, the space expands and more bone is added until the ideal length is reached over a period of about three months. Newer techniques use an internal implant and a remote control to adjust a telescopic device that pulls the two ends of bone apart. A second surgery is done to remove it a year later. Using the process to lengthen limbs in dwarfism is not without controversy, however. The group Little People of America says there is no medical reason to do it, and warns against possible complications including infection and temporary nerve injury. Adults who opt for the procedure for cosmetic reasons make up only about five percent of his practice, Paley says. He used to refuse anyone who was five-six or taller, but that has changed. “We did psych evaluations on all of our patients for 22 years, and what we found is they have a body-image problem. What mattered was that they could undergo the procedure. It took away whatever it was about their own body they couldn’t live with. That convinced me not to limit it.” But he doesn’t encourage it, either. “It’s very disruptive. These people end up in a wheelchair for several months,” he says. “This is a much bigger thing than most cosmetic procedures. There’s blood loss, pain. It’s a whole different ballgame. Insurance doesn’t pay for it. It’s something they need to think carefully about.” ●

Rattan lookalike Many of us love the look of rattan but not the deterioration our climate inflicts on it when it is left outside. Arholma ($79) is a hand-woven plastic rattan that looks like the real thing but is durable for use outside. The reversible pillow, polyurethane foam with polyester wadding for added comfort, has a removable cover that is washable. Available at IKEA, 151 NW 136th Ave., Sunrise, 888-888-4532, ikea.com.

These days you can have almost anything in your outdoor design that you have indoors. Manufacturers, realizing how important outdoor living is to consumers today, have designed everything from rugs to lamps to beautiful fabrics that withstand heat, humidity and sun. It’s easier than ever to build the outdoor kitchen of your dreams. Here are some of our recent finds.

Grand grilling Now that many of us are spending more time at home, it is time to re-evaluate grilling options. Your backyard can be transformed into a restaurant-style kitchen with Alfresco’s open air culinary system. Modular pieces put together allow you to refrigerate, prep, cook, serve and entertain like the pros do. Prices upon request. Available at Coral Springs Appliance Center, 3500 Coral Ridge Drive, Coral Springs, 954-752-3880, csappliances.com. Totally Tommy No wonder that South Floridians go for the Tommy Bahama-style indoors and out. Although islands in the South Pacific inspire the Ocean Club Pacifica Collection, the lines are contemporary with a Zen-like twist. The Pacifica swivel counter stool and cushion with slat back ($1,929 suggested retail each as shown) is paired with the 38-inch diameter bistro table from Tommy’s Ocean Club Resort Collection ($2,319 suggested retail). The table top is a concrete composite Weatherstone with a stain-resistant finish and a polyurethane sealant for reduced maintenance. For local stores, see baers.com.

Fashionable black and white We are not only seeing black and white on the runways, it’s also showing up in stylish outdoor umbrellas. Treasure Garden designers show the look in styles from animal prints to polka dots and stripes. This umbrella with matte-black frame and black-and-white zebra fabric features a 9-foot collar tilt that allows someone to tilt the umbrella even when seated. Suggested retail varies from $430 to $740 depending on fabric selection. Base is sold separately. Available at Carls Patio stores, carlspatio.com; Jerry’s Casual Patio, mycasualpatio. com; patio.com, 3060 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton, 561-395-8035, patio.com; Patio Furniture Warehouse, 2930 SW 30th Ave., Hallandale Beach, 954-458-3113, patiofurniturewarehouse.net. Botox for furniture What do you do when you spent thousands on outdoor furniture and a few years later it is showing its age? Absolute Patio Furniture Restoration is dedicated to give your old furniture a new life – with everything from refinishing the metal to replacing slinging, strapping and custom cushions. In this case the chaises were blasted with aluminum oxide to remove the old finish. Then they went through a five-stage chemical pretreatment system to prepare the metal for powder coating. They were baked in a 450-degree oven in two stages – a primer coat, which protects the surface from future rust and corrosion, and an Old Bronze decorative finish. New slings were added. Prices upon request. Available at Absolute Patio Furniture Restoration, 1254 NW 21st St., Pompano Beach, 954-917-2715, absolutepowdercoat.com.

e love outdoor living. Swimming. Cocktails by the pool. Al fresco dining. Reading in the shade of a tiki hut. It’s no wonder we want our outdoor living spaces to look as chic as our indoor design. Forget the old ideas of scratchy outdoor fabrics and uncomfortable furniture. Seating is deep and comfy. Fabrics can mimic anything we use indoors – such as chenille or damask – and they stand up to sun, heat and humidity. Attractive outdoor kitchens have made the solitary barbecue grill seem so 20th century. And a fire pit is becoming the new must-have even in South Florida heat. Four designers show us their interpretations of the “Great Outdoors.” Come with us, and get inspired.

tiles surrounding the pool interior were replaced with a subtle blue tile. The Chattahoochee pool decking was covered with wood decking and a walkway. She created a lush, tropical landscape with travelers palms, staghorn ferns, hibiscus and bougainvillea. But Hurricane Andrew had other plans. “Nothing was left,” she says. “I was screaming. I looked anorexic and couldn’t eat. I started working on cleaning the garden and found bags and bags of beer bottles and a horseshoe. When I found the horseshoe I had an epiphany: We have to stay here and I have to put everything back.” She redid the garden and kept that horseshoe, which she hung over the front door. But she apparently hung it upside-down. A friend told her if she wanted good luck she should hang it with the ends pointing upward. She complied and is thrilled with her version of Key West in South Miami. “I told myself that when this design was finished I would never rent a house in Key West again,” she says. “We never have.”

hen Dan and Loretta Forer bought their small three bedroom, two bath house in South Miami, it was the property, not the building, that made her see the potential for a haven they never would want to leave. They walked to the back of the 20,473-square-foot lot past an interesting kidney-shaped pool and little formal landscaping. Her vision transformed the home and outdoors in three stages with tropical plantings, an outdoor kitchen, a chickee hut and a series of 28 French doors that opened on to a covered space for outdoor entertaining. The goal was to make this a great outdoor party house and to make the Forers feel as if they were outside when they were inside. “The only time Dan wasn’t shooting was over Christmas so we would rent a house in Key West through New Year’s,” she says. “I hated leaving those houses. I wanted a house I didn’t have to leave. I wanted our house to be Key West.” Her idea for a fountain in the existing pool came from the Marquesa Hotel in Key West. She bugged the owners for their source and she The kidney-shaped pool was there, but the Forers added a walkway creatively used the fountain upside down so it looks like a curved to cover the Chattahoochee and a fountain inspired by the Marquesa spray of water that flows into the pool. DESIGNER: JACK FHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHER: ROBERT BRANTLEY ack Fhillips has a reputation for designing homes with a tasteful aesthetic that never goes out of style. The lanai and pool seating he created on the north end of Palm Beach island defines his look. The clients, who have other homes in Ireland and Majorca, wanted something comfortable and not too trendy where they could sit outside and relax. Fhillips gave them a design he describes as “unpretentious, unaffected and easy on the eye.” It looks like something you would see in a movie about an old-money family in Palm Beach. The pool area is decorated with white Lutyens benches, a classic design inspired by 19th-century English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Fhillips, who has them in his own homes, describes them as classic as a white button-down oxford shirt. Around the pool, pink begonias are planted in white metal urns based on a New Orleans style. “The whole house became blue and white,” he says. “From one end of the house to the other you don’t get jolted and shocked by color. I used different shades of blue throughout the interiors and brought out the crisp blue and white for the outside.” The lanai is enclosed on three sides so he was able to use real wicker, not a synthetic facsimile. The two conversation areas are similar — one featuring an Indonesian table and the other a rope twist coffee table with thick bamboo legs. His favorite accessory is the old beat-up basket on the floor filled with old wood floats. “That basket has more character and charm than anything,” he says. “At times, we are all focused on everything being so perfect. There is something special in the imperfection of things. A chip or a ding gives it intrinsic value. I think it’s so sad that so many accessories are made out of resin. They are not real things. When you find something real it has tactile quality. It shows usage and weathering. It is real.”

J

Jack Fhillips used classic Lutyens benches in the pool area and blue and white upholstery in the lanai in this Palm Beach home. His favorite accessory is the beat-up basket on the floor because it is real and tactile.

design ARCHITECT: WILLIAM WIETSMA PHOTOGRAPHER: ROBERT BRANTLEY illiam Wietsma’s snowbird clients hired him because he is an architect and a builder who could fulfill their vision of a house in Bermudian design with Flemish gables on a double lot in Gulf Stream. Wietsma's company has designed and built 26 homes in Gulf Stream and it gave the Gulf Stream Golf Club, which was designed by Addison Mizner, a facelift. “The husband is a builder in Virginia and he was very particular about quality,” Wietsma says. “We worked on the project together. We went through how they entertain and how they live.” They entertain a lot so the outdoor covered area has dining and two conversation areas with teak furniture that the owners selected. All the main spaces – the family room, kitchen, William Wietsma, a builder and architect, anchored the pool with a small cottage that dining room, living room and master bedroom has an outdoor kitchen. All major rooms of the Bermuda-style house in Gulf Stream — open up to the lanai. The small cottage facing open to the pool. the pool and hot tub has an outdoor kitchen with granite countertops and a dining area. Behind the door is a cabana bath. An artist painted a trellis design on the walls. The pool, which has a hot tub, was designed with scalloped edges, blue tile to match the water and a cast stone from Herpel on the coping and deck. “In our designs, the outdoor living spaces are as important as the indoor spaces,” he says. “People have been coming to Florida for over a century to be able to enjoy a tropical lifestyle. Our goal is to create a sanctuary for our clients that encourages relaxation, conversation and socializing.”

DESIGNER: JOSEPH FAVA PHOTOGRAPHER: KIM SARGENT hen Joseph Fava’s clients bought their 12,000-squarefoot home in Jupiter’s Bears Club, they started by renovating the master bath and bedroom and then they wanted to add another 6,000 square feet. The wife is from California so they moved into the Beverly Hills Hotel for four months while the work was completed. “They entertain a lot and four of their seven children live there full time,” Fava says. “They spend a lot of time outside and wanted something that was very cool and different. They wanted the design to flow well while they entertain.” Not only did they expand the house, they also wanted This house in the Bears Club in Jupiter has a large pool with beach entry a larger pool. This desire translated into filling in the old and grotto. Joseph Fava designed the covered area with plenty of seating for pool and creating one with a beach entry, a grotto and a dining and conversation.

This summer, from tuxedoed Justin Timberlake and rapper extraordinaire Jay-Z to Beyoncé and beyond, there’s going to be a lot of magic here. Entertainment writer Greg Carannante rounds up the big – and small – shows coming soon. Our writers will also tell us what they Like about South Florida; we check into some splendid summer vacations close to home; dining writer Rebecca Cahilly sets the table with dining deals and we’ll taste the little-known wines of Italy’s Puglia.

COOL SUMMER

JT and Beyoncé may split the summer concert spotlight, with an assist from Jay-Z. But the biggest star is music BY GREG CARANNANTE

et me ask you this: Is there such a thing as too much music? There is nothing like a

live show, and apparently no amount of mp3's or outlandish ticket prices can change that. On the heels of debut single Suit & Tie, the exposure barrage went ballistic in February with a double Grammy whammy, as the song’s knockout performance during the telecast was echoed by repeated plays of his Bud Light Platinum commercial.

I feel like I can see he go the music.’ I said, that’s really cool, music that you can see, not just hear. That’s a real experience. What if I just called this The 20/20 Experience? Wha So tthen the idea for the album cover just came out of that.” Soon after the Grammy blast, the album Soo at No. 1, selling more than 900,000 units debuted a week, only the 19th to do so since 1991 when in its first week SoundScan started tracking. It also was the fastest-selling album worldwide in iTunes history, and at press time, remains album charts at #9. The JT machine rolls on: a on the Billboard d albu follow-up album will drop Sept. 30 and a 20/20 solo world tour kicks off Oct. 31.

novel, a troop of Iraq War heroes on a U.S. victory tour are mustered into Thanksgiving Day halftime festivities at Dallas’ Texas Stadium – starring Destiny’s Child. It is not merely that Bey has been embraced by the realm of literature that’s so telling, it’s the way that her sexgoddessness is sanctified by it: Given the privilege of meeting THE Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, how do these men respond? We don’t want no stinking cheerleaders, they cry. We want to meet Beyoncé! Months before their arrival, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were already stirring things up in South Florida. Their April trip to Cuba evoked headline-grabbing demands for an investigation from Sen. Marco Rubio and other conservative Cuban-American politicos. As it turned out, the couple’s suspected fifth wedding anniversary pleasure trip turned out to have been authorized as “cultural engagement” and not illegal “tourism.” “You know, it was such a beautiful trip,” Beyoncé said in a GMA interview. “I met some incredible children. I visited some incredible entrepreneurs. I learned so much about so many people and the country, and [the reaction] was actually quite shocking.” Shocking? Perhaps not in Miami, where only last year the outcry over manager Ozzie Guillen’s proCastro comments no doubt emptied a fair number of seats at Marlins Park in Little Havana. What would be shocking, however, is if the recent flap took any toll on either tour’s ticket sales. ●

Beyoncé is not only the brightest but also one of only a few female stars in a boy-crazy lineup. The Jonas Brothers (Aug. 2) and the Backstreet Boys (Aug. 25), both at Cruzan, follow recent boyband area shows by New Kids on the Block, Boyz II Men and One Direction. For the musically more mature, there are charttopping nouveau dynamo Bruno Mars (Aug. 30, AAA), triple-threat Renaissance-boy John Mayer (Sept. 8, Cruzan) and trusty Kelly Clarkson

HOME DESIGN & DÉCOR Classy countertop pinongrill.com, iddidesign.com, attainc.com Restaurants are more than just food. Service and design also make the experience special. One of the most intriguing aspects of the design at Pinon Grill at Town Center Mall in Boca Raton is the countertop that is reminiscent of the priceless walls of the Amber Room in St. Petersburg, Russia, which were presented to Peter the Great in 1716 by the King of Prussia and stolen by the Nazis in WW II. Pinon’s 3-inch thick countertop of poured resin with indirect lighting was custom made by Atta in New York City for the commercial interior design firm ID & Design International in Fort Lauderdale. Imagine this in your home. — Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub

Stately statues sklarfurnishings.com Homes with high ceilings require accessories that don’t get lost or look like they are in miniature. What we need are pieces that are tall and memorable. Two of my favorite examples are the resin statues of a male and female found at Sklar in Boca Raton that resemble statutes in a promotion for Art Basel in Switzerland. The statues, 13 by 16 by 84 inches, would make a grand statement in a great room or an entry foyer. — Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub

Going in circles christopherguy.com, brownsinteriors.com Mirrors have come a long way from simple circles, rectangles, ovals and squares. One of the most intriguing is a mirror by Christopher Guy that I first saw in a Delray Beach home designed by Patty Gilbert of Brown’s Interior Design in Boca Raton. The spyrograph mirror intertwines three single ribbon rings with the complexity of hand-carved twists. It comes in three sizes – 44 by 44 inches, 51 by 51 inches and 57 by 57 inches. — Charlyne Varkonyi Schaub For more of the 2013 Like list, download City & Shore's iPad app free in the iTunes store.

It’s

no secret South Florida vacations are cheaper in summer, but this story isn’t about cheap. It’s about hopping in the car and within an hour or two checking into a resort that has a stunning spa, alluring swimming pools, impeccable concierge service and talk-of-the-town restaurants. It’s about taking the kids along and, at pet-friendly places such as Loews hotels, not having to kennel the dog. It’s about leaving your passport at home and avoiding airport chaos. For those who love to be outdoors, summering in South Florida is about clear waters for scuba diving and snorkeling and calm waters for sailing, paddle boarding and fishing. Even those who dislike the heat praise our dewy-fresh mornings, refreshing afternoon showers and steady sea breezes. Included in the package are resort credits, discounts and, in the case of The Diplomat, tickets to the Charles Schulz Peanuts exhibit this summer at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (through Sept. 1). Also popular with summer guests is power shopping at such blockbuster sites as Sawgrass Mills and the ravishing Bal Harbour Shops across from the plush St. Regis Bal Harbour. “We’re the closest resort to Sawgrass Mills,” says Bonaventure General Manager Jim Mauer. “Many of our summer guests come from south of us. We’re known for our golf, spa and steakhouse. At the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, individuals or couples can book a “Stay Fit in Fort Lauderdale” package that includes Beach Boot Camp sessions, a 30-minute consultation with the hotel’s personal trainer and nutritionist and fitness classes (yoga, Pilates, spinning, Zumba, kickboxing).

At all South Florida luxury hotels contacted for this story, special staff are assigned to track guest preferences to ensure that repeaters receive special perks. After staff heard one couple talk about “our song,” for example, the hotel had the tune playing in the couple’s room when they arrived for an anniversary stay. include cupcake baking taught by the resort’s pastry chef and golf and tennis clinics for kids as young as 4. “Some of our kids have grown up in our infinity pool,” Mikus says. “A girl who is now 11 made a video of the family’s nine summers here. It was so good we showed it for the board of directors.” What should you look for and look out for in a South Florida summer staycation? First, book early if you’re using loyalty points for a free stay. Redemptions spike in summer. Summer packages are always a plus, but look too for Florida resident specials, fourth night free, kids-eat-free deals, and discounts or freebies on amenities such as court time, golf-club storage or spa treatments. Some lastminute specials are announced only via e-mail.

Your hosts know it’s hot, so expect surprises such as frozen grapes and iced towels gratis at the beach or pool. If you’re a repeat guest you may also find gifts in the room or your favorite cocktail upon check-in. Returning guests also have a good chance of a room upgrade, sometimes leaping two or more categories. Don’t be shy about asking. In summer it’s also easier to get a late check-out, allowing for a full morning at the beach. Sherry Serio, director of sales and marketing at the W Fort Lauderdale, sums up what South Florida’s resorts offer guests who opt for a local staycation: “You’re really in your own back yard,” she says, “but you’ll feel like you’re in the Bahamas.” ●

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ike Evans on Magic City

For much more on Jeffrey Dean Morgan, see our exclusive interview at cityandshore.com

Continued from pg. 24 stocked with hit-records from the 1950s. A rotary phone and a hallway ice machine look like they’d work if plugged in. “There’s no other way that I know of than to show it through the detail,” said architect Carlos Barbosa, the show’s designer, who immersed himself in the work of Fontainebleau and Eden Roc architect Morris Lapidus to get every last touch just right. “If your detail falls apart, then the whole illusion falls apart. I was fixated on creating a reality that made the actors feel like they were in a time machine.” As the storyline picks up this summer Ike’s determination to regain sole control of his hotel forces him into more intense dealings with an even bigger mob boss - Sy Berman, played by guest star James Caan. But if Morgan has his way there are lines Ike won’t cross, among them, cheating on TV wife Vera, (Olga Kurylenko). “Even when things get very dark and Ike pushes away many of the people he loves, the one thing we can count on is that he loves his wife,” he says. “But I really need that Season 3 from STARZ to see how this story plays out!” Morgan – who hit it big in 2006 as dying cardiac patient Denny Duquette on Grey’s Anatomy – lives with his longtime girlfriend, actress Hilarie Burton (herself now a co-star on Grey’s) and their young son. Living in Miami for months at a time over the past two years, Morgan said, “my memories here are all kid-involved. We lived right on Pinetree Drive – I have fond memories of taking my kid trick-or-treating on the block. We love the beach. We went to the zoo. We love Lincoln Road and the farmer’s markets. And I love the Cuban Coffee. “There’s nothing about Miami I don’t like,” he says. “OK – except maybe the House music. Way too much House music. I wish they’d go back to some rock. That’s my only complaint.” On TV: Magic City – starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olga Kurylenko, Steven Strait, Jessica Marais, Christian Cooke, Elena Satine and Danny Huston – airs Fridays at 9 on STARZ, through Aug. 9.

MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE

A taste - without the travel - of Italy’s Puglia region BY MARK GAUERT I have never been to Puglia, but I’ve tasted it.

For those about to tap a Google map, Puglia (pronounced POOL-ya) is on the heel of Italy. I’ve never set a heel of my own there, but I have seen photos of its ancient vineyards creeping up to a rocky coastline falling into the Adriatic blue. It is only a postcard image, of course. For all I know, Puglia is the asphalt capital of Italy. But I don’t think so, because when I sip wines from Puglia, I do not taste asphalt. I taste mint, sage, thyme, orange peel, black cherry and other red fruits. Flavors, generally speaking, that do not grow between the cracks of parking lots. It’s been three years since I last recommended wines from Puglia. At the time, it seemed a little risky - the wines were relatively unknown in South Florida, muscled out by better-known cousins from Tuscany, Abruzzo and the Piedmont, among others. I’m happy to report these scrappy wines are holding their own on wine lists now. At least, I no longer stump the waiter if I ask if there’s NePriCa Puglia in the house. Well, mostly. I can also report the 2008 wines I recommended from Tormaresca (owned by the Antinori family) have been equaled – and, in a couple of cases, exceeded – by vintages now entering the market. The 2011 Chardonnay Puglia IGT, a floral bouquet in a glass, and a steal at $12. The family from France, visiting us recently at the table, compared it favorably to more expensive white Burgundy wine. (Beaune? Bon.) The 2010 Torcicoda Salento IGT ($22). Proudly 100 percent Primitivo - all fig and plum and licoricey - this is a fine wine for drinking now. And I mean right now if you happen to have some bleu cheese and crusty French bread to serve with it. Sublime. The 2011 Roycello Fiano Salento IGT rated a solid three out of five stars at our table, but only because it was a bit too sweet. Call it three stars plus, though, when paired with prosciutto di parmi. And that’s the way we imagined they drink in Puglia, pairing these fine wines with smoky meats and fresh seafood pulled from the seas off that rocky coastline. Of course, none of us around the table has ever been to Puglia. But we were convinced we'd tasted it. ●

ariety is the spice of life, and it’s certainly adding vitality to summer at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Through its Masterpiece of the Month series, the Norton has been displaying some striking — though seldom-exhibited — works by renowned artists. The series opened in May with Lucien Freud’s The Brigadier. The life-sized portrait remains on display, along with several Freud prints. It was followed this month by four works on paper by impressionist Mary Cassatt.

The series finale in September features the early 18th century Chinese court portrait, Yinli, Prince of Guo. The works belong to private collectors in South Florida, for whom Norton curator Cheryl Brutvan has high praise: “This series would not be possible without their willingness to loan these masterpieces for public display.” —Kingsley Guy
