PRESIDENT’S REPORT

CEO’S REPORT

Dear fellow Members,

Dear Members,

Welcome to the Winter edition of Chevron.

The role of the Board and Club executive is to ensure the Club prospers and grows. As your CEO, it’s my role to maintain the vision, and manage for continued growth and success.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Returned and Services League (RSL) in Australia. Founded by returning soldiers from World War I, the main aim of the RSL is to continue to provide the camaraderie, support, and mateship shown amongst diggers during conflict. Today, the CHPRSL Sub-Branch is one of 1,200 essential sub-branches around Australia. Ever since the Club was established back in 1947 it has been a hub for countless commemorative and social events. We are proud of the close relationship we have formed with the Sub-Branch, and have worked together to deliver events that commemorate this important period of remembrance. The relationship has underpinned many of the most important events we’ve been proud to bring you through the 100-year anniversaries of the First World War, such as the Commemoration Ball in 2014, our new Dawn Service and the always well attended Anzac Cabarets. This year we’re thrilled to be one of very few clubs in NSW to host the Australians On The Western Front touring exhibition: a special exhibition of curated material from the Australian War Memorial’s National Collection which explores the experiences of Australian servicemen and women in Belgium and France between 1916 and 1918. This important exhibition, which goes on display in the Club from Friday 3 June until Saturday 2 July, is open to everyone. You are all welcome – and please encourage family and friends to view this unique, informative and moving tribute to our troops who served so courageously on the Western Front. This will be the first of three annual commemorative exhibitions that the Club will host between now and 2018. On behalf of the Club, I would like to acknowledge and thank the Australian War Memorial and the RSL & Services Clubs for their commitment to and assistance with the exhibition. We are proud to have won the ‘Arts and Culture’ Award at the 2016 ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards last month. This recognised our commitment to sustaining local arts and cultural communities through our latest community engagement initiative, the Cooks River Arts and Cultural Alliance (CRACA). A Songwriting Workshop and Showcase held at the Club late last year was the first numerous initiatives planned by this new Alliance. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to the local community building upon our success at the 2014 awards when we took home the ‘Sports Award’ for the Cooks River Sporting Alliance (CRSA).

One of the essential pillars that supports this goal is for us to remain an appealing destination for Members and guests even in changing times. When reflecting upon all our key achievements during the last quarter, I am pleased to report on several performance highlights spanning the Club’s various businesses. Continuing on our diversification pathway not only meets the needs of our diverse community and ensures our offerings are what locals value; it also lays down solid foundations for our future. As this edition of Chevron goes to print, we are just weeks away from opening the doors at ‘Camperdown Commons’ which is our new name for the former bowling club site at 31A Mallett St Camperdown. We are confident that this newly revitalised local hub will provide a safe, inclusive and much-loved space for people of all ages and walks of life. Another highlight in the last quarter comes from Bargo Sports Club. Just over a year since the new outdoor areas (expanded deck and kids’ play area) and updated familyfriendly dining facilities were completed, the Club continues to enjoy solid growth and set new benchmarks since joining the fold a little over 14 years ago. I wish to acknowledge the efforts of the leadership team and staff at Bargo and recognise all the dedication that goes into achieving such positive results and continuing to meet the needs of locals and visitors to the Southern Highlands. I would also like to take the opportunity to mention that delivering on key strategic priorities isn’t something that happens in a vacuum. One of the common denominators that underpins these achievements is a stable executive team that maintains a focus on great teamwork at all organisational levels. We look forward to continuing to bring you news regarding upcoming projects that move us towards even greater longterm success and prosperity. Finally, thank you to Members for your loyalty and patronage and to our dedicated staff. We are delighted that you value the Club and its operations and thank you for providing constructive feedback and suggestions to help us grow from strength to strength.

I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING Easter Fun Fair Chocolate, chicks and children all round! The Easter Fun Fair was held on Sunday 20 March and was a fabulous fun day for the whole family! Children got up close and personal with the furry friends, had selfies with the Easter Bunny and painted some beautiful creations with the plaster craft activity. The highlight of the day was the spectacular sight of 500 balloons falling from the ceiling as the kids all raised their arms in hope of landing a balloon containing a golden egg! Five lucky children not only went home on a chocolate high but with a 1.5kg Easter Egg to add to their collection on Easter Sunday. Thank you to all Members and guests for attending and we hope you will mark this on your calendar for next year.

Anzac Day Dawn Service Members and guests rose before sunrise for the 101st anniversary of the landing in Gallipoli at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club’s Dawn Service. It was a moving commemoration including a beautiful performance of the Australian National Anthem sung by Australia’s Got Talent contestant and recent ACE Award Winner for ‘Club Performer of the Year 2016’ Mark Vincent, and the New Zealand National Anthem sung by Australian Idol contestant Madam Parker.

Mother’s Day “Thanks Mum” New research shows that what Mums really wanted on Mother’s Day was a simple “Thank you.” Hundreds of mum’s were not only treated to a beautiful breakfast or lunch but children had the opportunity to have a personalised photo taken with their Mum to say ‘Thanks.’ The afternoon saw one of Sydney’s best loved icons, Carlotta, entertain Mums, Members and guests with her glittering costume changes, sparkling songs and debaucherous stories that left everyone revelling in side-splitting laughter. We would like to take this opportunity to say ‘Thanks’ and express gratitude to all the Mums and hope you enjoyed the day at your Club.

ADAM LIAW WOK STAR Is Adam Liaw Australia’s most popular reality star? Four cookbooks, three TV shows and columns in Good Food, The Guardian and The Wall Street Journal, it’s a claim that would be hard to argue with. He’s an author, a TV star, a businessman, a UNICEF Ambassador, a mad sports fan, a Dad and, with over 250,000 followers, he’s a bonafide legend of social media. Instantly recognisable with his warm smile and topknot, 2010 MasterChef winner has carved out a niche for himself as one of Australia’s favourite new cooks and commentators. Born in Malaysia to an EnglishSingaporean mother and Hainanese Chinese father, Adam’s family lived in several countries throughout his youth. His culinary influences stretch from Malaysia and Japan to China, Indonesia, Australia and England. Although Adam was encouraged to cook from a young age, it wasn’t until he moved in with his Chinese grandmother in his early teens that his real passion for cooking was ignited. With season eight of MasterChef in full swing, season two winner, Adam Liaw reflects on how the TV show changed his life and what it has taught him.

“A lot has changed since I won the second season of MasterChef. I’m no longer working as a lawyer, for one. These days I cook, write books, make TV shows, travel and eat, and generally spend an awful lot of time thinking about food.”

Here’s a few things Adam has learned: Cooking is a basic life skill Australians spend on average around four hours a day watching TV and surfing the internet. We all have time to cook and there’s no better way to improve your quality of life than by learning to cook well. I’m not a chef, and I don’t want to be If you want to be a chef then going on telly isn’t the way to do it. Home cooking is not second-best to restaurant food – they’re two different things. I just love feeding my family, and helping other people do the same. Simple is best There is no correlation between how difficult something is to make, and how good it tastes. Ingredients are fantastic just as they are. Don’t get in the way of their natural flavour. Seasoning is the most important part of making food taste good Seasoning and flavouring are two different things. Seasoning is balancing just five things: salt, sweet, sour, bitter and umami. Flavouring, on the other hand, is adding new flavours to a dish. Food is fun We all tend to take food (and television) a bit too seriously. When the dust settles it’s time to remember that cooking is easy, and food is fun. Keep that in mind, happy cooking, and full bellies for years to come.

Wok Star Dinner EXCLUSIVE MEMBERS’ EVENT Hosted by Adam Liaw

You will be treated to a special evening and demonstration with a 3-course menu inspired by simple Asian food that lets the ingredients shine through.

GOT THE

WINTER BLUES? Winter is the time of year that most people batten down the hatches and prefer to hibernate rather than get out and enjoy everything that the winter season has to offer. Here are our fast tips to keeping your mind, body and spirit together during the colder months.

Time to exercise Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club has a fantastic Group Fitness Studio where Members can enjoy a variety of classes, from Yoga & Pilates to more upbeat cardio & circuit classes, and our Anytime Fitness Gym is open 24 hours a day. Great tasting food Winter is the season to indulge in great tasting food, and has many a household reaching for the slow cooker to prepare stews, Stroganoff, and tasty lamb shanks. Our Club CafĂŠ and Viva Grill are offering fantastic flavours this season with all of your classic winter warmers. Social interaction Do you become a winter recluse? Studies have shown that social isolation is worse for you in some instances as smoking, alcoholism, never exercising and twice as harmful as obesity. CanterburyHurlstone Park RSL has a range of Sub-Clubs that cater for all interests.

10

chprsl.com.au

For more information, see our list of Sub-Club contacts inside the back cover of the Chevron. Music Music can make us feel uplifted, contented and can improve our health. As we listen, music works on the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for controlling blood pressure and heartbeat, as well as the limbic system, which is responsible for feelings and emotions. Check out our entertainment pages to find out more information on our range of events. Be a child at heart What better way to feel younger and invigorated, than to spend time with the kids or grandkids. Spending quality time together can be just the right medicine for your family. Given our hectic lifestyles, taking time out to take the kids to

a show, getting them to socialise with other children, or having them join the grandparents for a day will certainly help feed the need for attention that most school aged children demand. Check out our school holiday activities on the opposite page, and motivate yourself to spend that quality time with the little ones in your life. Become involved It is without doubt that becoming involved in all of the activities provided by Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club during the winter period can be combined with a range of health benefits that will not only get you through the bleak winter, but will also have you enjoying life to the fullest.
