PRESIDENT’S REPORT There are many highlights to share with you since last quarter’s edition of the Chevron. Seeing Head Chef Gilbert Aquino and Chef de Partie Sangjoon Wang’s culinary talents recognised at the prestigious ClubsNSW Chef’s Table competition was a major highpoint. Your Club was among just 20 clubs to reach the finals out of 70. No mean feat delivering a 3-course meal for $22 a head in the finals! Congrats to Gilbert and Sangjoon for their superb effort. Serving up genuine value for Members is an ongoing commitment, and our Father’s Day Ribfest this coming Sunday 4 September is no exception. Once again you can treat Dad to a rack of pork or lamb ribs for just $10 at the Club during our Ribfest. Our Members’ Cabaret in April was another highlight. Hundreds of Members and guests were taken back to the heady days of the 60s and 70s, thanks to Johnny Young and Normie Rowe. It was great to see so many of you up on the dance floor. Tribute bands from all eras are hugely popular, and, in keeping with our entertainment lineup for all ages, we were thrilled to present shows featuring the music of ‘Bowie’, ‘The Eagles’ and ‘INXS’ in addition to an all-star 80’s line-up in the ‘Absolutely 80s’ show. The entertainment didn’t stop with that, as we kicked off a comedy fest with the hugely popular ‘Wild Wogs’ in July. Due to the great response to our comedy, I’m thrilled to say that we’re bringing back regular comedy shows, starting with a sports luncheon on September 16. This will be followed by high-calibre performers every month, like Jean Kittson and Merrick Watts in October. In my book, our club’s success is not just about delivering sound results; it’s also about having a Club with a great buzz: sell-out crowds on a Friday night in the Starlight Ballroom, tables full of happy families and friends in the Viva Grill, a vibrant gaming floor and the buzz of conversations in a packed Viva Café. Thank you to all our staff for your passion and commitment to making this a welcoming, first-class Club and to you – our Members – for continuing to support your Club as we continue to strive for excellence in entertainment, food and beverage.
John Crowhurst President
CEO’S REPORT When it comes to great customer service, it’s the seemingly little things that impress us the most and keep us going back to the same places – and people – time and time again. Whenever I walk the floor at each of our venues, it’s great to witness the camaraderie between patrons and staff. That kind of connection isn’t something that just happens overnight and it continues to impress me as I approach my 25th year of service to you. We are truly fortunate to have a steady, loyal team in place that is continuously building a rapport with Members, and providing guidance to newer members of the team. Earlier this year, we recognised the contributions of Team Member Deb Hornby with the ‘Employee of the Year Award - 2015’ for her tireless efforts in providing excellent customer service in addition to her overall commitment and contribution to the Club. At the Staff Awards Night, what impressed me most was the show of hands in the room. Almost everyone present had been mentored or trained by Deb who is one of our finest. Just last month we celebrated Margaret Matthews’ 30 years with the Club. Congratulations Margaret. Our employees make an important contribution to creating this Club’s welcoming atmosphere, delivering in spades, day after day, year after year, as new and long-standing Members have come to appreciate. Today, 1 in 5 of our staff has built their careers with the Club for over a decade. They’re the familiar faces you’ll see at reception, on the gaming floor, in the Viva Café, or on the door of the Starlight Auditorium. The talents of our staff never cease to surprise and delight. As John mentioned in his report, a great moment took place in July when the culinary prowess of our Head Chef Gilbert Aquino and Chef de Partie Sangjoon Wang’s was recognised at the Chef’s Table awards. Representing the Club, Gilbert and Sangjoon were among just 20 teams to reach the finals out of the 70-strong field. Well done. Whether staff members have joined us recently or have been here for 10 years or more, I’m a passionate advocate for delivering experiences to Members and guests that ensure the success of the Club for decades to come.

COMMUNITY SPACES FOR HIRE COMMON ROOM & DECK
Camperdown Commons’ name emphasises our commitment to creating a space that works for the community, where locals can connect, get involved, simply relax and feel like they belong.
With a covered deck that spills out to a paved courtyard this is a great room for a workshop, meeting or celebration. Suitable for up to 90 people.
By revitalising the space, your Club is delivering a relevant, exciting and unique offering to locals in this medium to high density neighbourhood.
COMMON PAVILION
The construction team did a great job to ensure that the venue opened on time. We started with a ‘preview’ in June, which provided a opportunity for us to host neighbours and Inner West Council members at separate previews on June 23 and June 24 respectively. Local response was extremely positive as they sampled delicious seasonal fare from acre eatery while listening to a few words from our urban farming partner Pocket City Farms about the educational workshops and sustainability programs they have planned.
Overlooking the urban farm, it is an ideal place to host an outdoor group gathering or private party. Suitable for up to 70 people. Hire is available to not-for-profit groups at subsidised rates. To find out more or book a space visit
camperdown.commons.com.au/commonspace
Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club CEO, Dean Thomas, took the opportunity to emphasise the Club’s commitment to ensuring the site would deliver on the promise to contribute to the community even more, by providing community spaces, available for hire at subsidised rates for not-for-profit organisations. We’ve received considerable positive response from the community and the media on a broad range of topics – from how unique the kids’ playspace is, to compliments about Acre’s quality food and philosophy, to what a great opportunity locals have to attend lifestyle classes against the backdrop of an urban farm. Common Room
“The old Camperdown Bowling Club has been transformed into a lush urban farm, restaurant and community meeting place… They (Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club) envisage Camperdown Commons as a revitalised community hub providing a safe, inclusive space for locals of all ages and walks of life.” – Hospitality industry website, www.the-drop.com.au The lawn extends into a kids’ playspace, suitable for all ages and built from 100% recycled, repurposed materials. It’s a space that stimulates kids’ imaginations and promotes creative, unstructured and safe play.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING A record 20 clubs from around NSW competed in this year’s Chef’s Table finals Head Chef Gilbert Aquino and Chef De Partie Sangjoon Wang were amongst the 20 clubs from around the state to compete in this year’s Chef’s Table finals. With a budget of just $22 per head for a three-course meal, the talented team served up a delicious meal to their guests. And to add a bit more heat to the kitchen, rather than just one key ingredient, the chefs had to incorporate a five item pantry list. The Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club team certainly had their work cut out for them and the talented chefs utilised new techniques with ingredients they had never use before.

Marrickville RSL for the first time joined Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club, Bargo Sports Club, Magpie Sports Club, and a few of the staff from Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club also joining the challenge. With the game over, the groups headed back to Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club for the presentation and a beautiful buffet lunch. The Archie White Memorial Sporting Trophy went to the Magpie Sports Golf Club who won the day scoring 74.9 Callaway points. An enormous thank you for all Clubs under the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club banner for a memorable day their support in honouring the late Club and Sub-Branch Life Member Archie White.

SUB-BRANCH news Jack “Bluey” Mercer West Head Gun Battery Army Track Official Opening On the 14 May, 93 year old, Jack “Bluey” Mercer, a Member of the Canterbury-Hurlstone Park Sub-Branch, along with Pittwater MP Rob Stokes, officially opened the Army Track at West Head Gun Battery Lookout in Ku-ring-Gai Chase National Park. It took volunteers more than 15 years working to clear the thick bushland covering the site and piece together the Battery’s history. Bluey was an 18 year old when he was posted to West Head to commence building the gun battery. Army Engineers devised a rail system with a counterweight pulley to transport the materials and all work was done with hand. West Head was chosen due to its strategic topography and its ability to prevent landing craft from entering the Pittwater. Bluey told those attending how he really appreciated all that the volunteers had done in bringing back to life a very important part of Australia’s history, as he said, “I own this piece of land, it’s mine.” That’s what he was told when he first arrived there in 1941 and he hasn’t forgotten it.
(Left) Bluey was greeted by the Australian Re-enactment Heritage Unit who proudly presented arms when he arrived. (Right) Ribbon Cutting
