PRESIDENT’S REPORT Members of the Club, As another year rapidly comes to an end and reflecting on the many achievements your Club has attained, it is with the great work we have done in the community that I am most proud of. You may recall that in 2014 we began funding a program at RPA Hospital to support the establishment of the state’s first clinic that provides much needed support for families that have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. Three years has past and the iSail Clinic has been recognised by its important work, so much so that NSW Health has now committed to making the program a permanent component of the state’s health system. In late October, this was even further recognized by the Clinic being nominated as a finalist in the NSW Health Awards. This is another great example of how your Club has helped support a much needed initiative getting off the ground and meeting an important need for the community. While on this topic I’d also like to update you on another of our successful community programs that continues to grow in strength. In this its third full year, Carnival of the Codes continues to demonstrate our commitment to promoting wellness by engaging over 3,000 local school children with 12 grassroots sports clubs in sports participation. Through this program, that we created, we have managed to lift the profile of local grassroots sport within community by engaging directly with young school children and educating parents in the importance of sport for their children’s health and wellbeing. In October we ran a smaller community forum involving the main sporting associations including NRL, ARU, AFL, Sydney FC, Netball NSW, Touch Football NSW, Little Athletics NSW and Cricket NSW. We also invited a number of local schools and Ashfield Police where we brainstormed ideas about how we could further engage and communicate directly with parents. These are just two examples of the many initiatives that we have taken a lead role in to supporting the community in which we belong and I look forward to informing you of some great new initiatives in 2017. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish everyone an enjoyable and healthy Christmas.
John Crowhurst President
CEO’S REPORT As the year draws to an and when reflecting on what has been a busy year, it would be remiss not to mention some of the significant achievements that the staff were involved in throughout 2016. In May of this year, several members of our team took part in the ‘Honour Our Heroes Relay Walk’ which helped to raise much needed funds for the ‘Homes For Heroes’ program. As mentioned before, this program is dedicated to providing accommodation to our homeless veterans, of which in 2009 there was estimated to be in excess of 3,000. By maintaining our involvement in this cause, we are helping to keep faith with a core RSL aim: “Looking after veterans in time of trouble”. I can report with a great sense of pride, that our relay team raised in excess of $5000 for this worthy cause. Following on from the inaugural CHP Kokoda Challenge of 2015 in which Nathaniel Taylor and Danielle Sheppard successfully completed the arduous journey, our Senior Chef De Partie Viktoria Markwell-Burgmann and Bargo Club Supervisor & Trainer Jaime Bentley were also afforded the opportunity of a lifetime, in retracing the steps of our ‘Diggers’ on a inspiring journey of endurance and indomitable spirit. Congratulations to both Viktoria and Jaime for successfully completing the CHP Kokoda Challenge. It is always with great pride that I can announce when one of our long serving staff Members receives external recognition for their achievements. Congratulation to our HR Coordinator, Ryan Dickson our HR Coordinator on being awarded a “Rising Star” in the prestigious “Human Resources Director Magazine”! Ryan started his career as a Trainee at the Club in 2007, moving through the ranks where he has been working in HR for the past 3.5 years. Ryan has developed some very successful initiatives for frontline employees including a reward program, employee benefits scheme and mentoring for Duty Managers and Club Supervisors. Without doubt, I am sure that you will agree, by continually striving for personal excellence, our staff will transcend their ability to make Members and Guests feel welcome safe and providing a truly exceptional place to belong. On that note, I would like to sincerely thank you for your continued loyalty and support and wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday.

CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR On 10 September we celebrated the fine work of all of our Sub-Club Members with the Club Member Of The Year Awards. This year’s winner Marilyn Bower has been a Member of the Club for 42 years and has been involved with the CHPRSL Youth Club Since 1982. Now a Life Member of the Youth Club, Marilyn has also dedicated her valuable time to many charities, events & fundraising, and is a deserved winner of this illustrious award.
TEAMING UP WITH HEARTBEAT OF FOOTBALL TO HELP SAVE LIVES! On Friday 16 September your Club teamed up with Heartbeat Of Football – an organisation dedicated to providing heart health awareness on the sporting field and saving lives by providing much needed access to defibrillators. What a day! The inaugural HEARTBEAT OF FOOTBALL Sports Luncheon was a huge hit, with our Club helping to raise over $20,000 for such a worthy cause. Special thanks to HOF global ambassador Tim Cahill and his family, Nick Farr Jones as well as those other sporting celebrities who supported us on the day including Susie Maroney, Peter Katholos, Simon Hill, Steve Mortimer, George Peponis, Stuart Clark, Mark Dalton, Tony Henderson, Luke Kendall, Sharni Layton and many more - particularly from the football world. We look forward to continuing our support for The Heartbeat Of Football Foundation next year, and in many years to come.
THANK YOU – JEANIE BROWN The committee of the Lawns Bowls group and the Board of Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club would like to thank Lawn Bowls Secretary Jeanie Brown for her long standing commitment and 40 plus years of service to the group. Jeanie attended her first Lawn Bowls game back in 1976 and has been an integral part of the Sub-Club ever since. She joined the committee in 1989 and in 1993 she became Bowls Secretary - a position which she still holds to this very day. Jeanie clearly demonstrates her commitment by caring for everyone and ensuring players have the best of fun at all events organised. We would like to thank Jeanie for her achievements and for being the “backbone” of the Lawn Bowls group! Well done.
Jeanie and her friend Margaret.

How many times have you been met with rolling eyes when handing out Christmas gifts? When you get it right – and you’ll know when you do – their reaction will be like nothing else. LAST MINUTE OR SOMEONE WHO IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BUY FOR…
An unaccounted guest who is joining you for Christmas Day or a friend or relative who appears to have absolutely everything! Gift Cards may appear the lazy present with little thought but they can also be the ultimate gift as they provide the flexibility for the recipient to buy something at their leisure.
