PRESIDENT’S REPORT

CEO’S REPORT Dear Members,

Dear Fellow Members, A warm welcome, a slight understatement considering the heat we have most recently been experiencing, to a new year here at your Club. The Autumn Edition of your Club Magazine once again presents a fantastic line-up of great entertainment, food offers and events to you our valued Members. So far this year have already seen a lucky Member drive away in a brand new Audi and many more winning great cash prizes through the exciting Member Draws conducted at the Club. The tail end of January was extremely busy here with Australia Day, Dami Im performance and Chinese New Year festivities all landing on the same weekend, I don’t recall a busier time at your Club. The coming months will be just as busy as is always the case at this time of the year. March has some great offers for all Members and Senior’s Week features a great meal deal and entertainment for Seniors Card holders. As discussed further in the CEO Report, the Club is about to embark on some significant changes to the food and beverage outlets, with work commencing 20 March by the closure of Mama Wong Restaurant on the lower ground floor. I’d like to express my gratitude to the operators for their more than seven years of service here at CHPRSL and wish them all the best with their future endeavours. April is an extremely busy time with the Board and Advisory Committee Elections, our Annual General Meeting, Easter raffles and events, Member’s ANZAC Caberets, Commemoration Sunday and most importantly Anzac Day all within the month. Please refer to the relevant pages within this magazine for all the details. Accompanying this magazine is a copy of our 2016 Year in Review. Please take the time to read about the great results achieved throughout yet another record year.

This year is an election year and we strongly encourage all Members to read the enclosed notice and participate in the election, by voting for the Board and Advisory Committees (where applicable), and attending the Annual General Meeting being held at in the Auditorium at Hurlstone Park on Tuesday 4 April at 7pm. Also, I’d like to inform you of some changes that will be occurring at your Club this coming year and beyond. We are about to embark on building works to create some exciting new food outlets that we plan to open throughout 2017 and beyond. In order to make these changes, on 20 March this year, Mama Wong Restaurant will close its doors. I’d like to personally thank Mama Wong for the past seven plus years that they have been part of our Club. I look forward to announcing more about our exciting new food outlets and master plan stages over the coming months. We appreciate your patience as the Club continues to operate throughout the construction stages. There will be a number of disruptions to different areas of the Club throughout this time and on behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that these changes may cause. If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Also included are details of our AGM and important information about the Elections for the Board and satellite Club Advisory Committees. Thank you again for your ongoing support. I look forward to seeing you again soon at the Club.

SUB-BRANCH news Ken McIntyre – Honored by RSL Headquarters Ken McIntyre was recently honored for his service to the Canterbury–Hurlstone Park RSL Sub-Branch by the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation from RSL Headquarters. Ken had served many years as the Sub-Branch’s Honorary Secretary before a serious accident in 2016 left him severely injured with a long and painful recovery period ahead of him. During his convalescence, Ken and the Assistant Secretary, Jock Stewart, swapped roles whereby Ken took on a mentoring role to ease Jock into the position. He continues to represent the Sub-Branch at our District meetings and is our Clubs delegate at State Council. Ken also devotes a large amount of his time to the Vietnam Veterans Association. His dedication to the Club and the Sub-Branch, prompted the Sub-Branch Committee to recommend to the Members that Ken be put forward for this award. The proposal was unanimously passed at a meeting of all Members and approved by Head Office.

Ken accepting his award from Sub-Branch President, Mark McIntyre.

Vale Neville Rose Neville John Rose passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Monday 21 November 2016. Neville’s career began in 1954 as an Aircraft Engineer with Qantas, serving 44 years and afterwards volunteering his time with The Qantas Retirees Club, becoming the President. Neville joined Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club in 1993 as a regular Member and was always accompanied by his late wife Margaret. In 2006, Neville was elected to the Board of Directors and served on the Board’s Executive Team in 2009. For his outstanding service and dedication to our Club, Neville was awarded Life Membership in 2013 – the highest honour for any Club Member. Neville was deeply passionate about “his” Club and in particular, he was a great supporter of the various Sub-Clubs and also the vital role the Club played in the local community. He was very popular amongst the staff and other Members for his courtesy and friendliness. Beloved Neville, father of Stephen and Phillip will be dearly missed by families Natasha and Aston, Wendy, Rebecca and Samantha and of course, Members and staff of Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club… A true Club man.

The Returned & Services League of Australia (NSW Branch) commenced in Sydney on 25 April 2017 after being granted a charter to form a Returned Soldiers Association. The organisation was formed to provide a place where men returning from the horrors of The Great War. It enabled them to gather and talk with one another, sharing experiences and stories that they were not able to share with family and friends. They had endured horrific conditions and so were able to help ease the pain that they had gone through.

The 4th Light Horse Regiment This year marks the 100th anniversary of the famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade into Beersheba The battle of Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917 as part of the wider British offensive collectively known as the third Battle of Gaza. The final phase of this all day battle was the famous mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Commencing at dusk, members of the brigade stormed through the Turkish defences and seized the strategic town of Beersheba. The capture of Beersheba enabled British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza on 7 November and continue the advance into Palestine. After Gaza fell on 7 November 1917, Turkish resistance in southern Palestine collapsed. The 4th Light Horse Brigade participated in the pursuit that followed, and then spent the first months of 1918 resting and training. The 4th Light Horse Regiment’s first major battle would also become that which made it legendary.

morations By forming these groups, that then went on to become the RSL as we know it now, they were able to find some sense of solace. In 1919 the Returned Soldiers Association became the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. In 1941 the name changed again to the Returned Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen Imperial League of Australia. In 1966 the name then became the Returned Services League of Australia. Finally, in 1999, then name became what the RSL is known as today - the Returned and Services League of Australia to incorporate all serving and ex-serving members of the Defence Force.

TIMELINE: Australia in the First World War, 1917 1917 31 Mar

United States Declares War on Germany It would take at least 12 months before US troops were present on the Western Front in enough numbers to have any effect on the outcome of the war.

Second Battle of Bullecourt The Hindenburg Line was attacked again by two brigades of the 2nd Division. It was a successful yet costly action for the British & Australian units with 7,482 casualties for the AIF.

Battle of Menin Road I ANZAC attacked Menin Road as part of the British 2nd Army. Overcoming formidable German positions they made considerable gains. Again, victory was not without heavy losses and the two divisions sufferd 5,000 casualties.

Battle of Broodseinde I & II ANZAC fought alongside each other for the first time in what was the next step towards the Gheluvelt Plateau. The troops successfully captured the German positions on Broodseinde ridge at a cost of 6,500 casualties.

“The Light Horseman” from “The Charge” This image is available for viewing at the Club throughout April. It is also available for purchase via www.lighthorseart.com.au

Battle of Beersheba The most famous mounted charge involving 400-500 troops of the 4th Light Horse Brigade. Beersheba fell to the Australian Light Horse with less than 70 casualties and the way was now open to roll up the flanks of the defences at Gaza.

Withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line The German Army made a tactical withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line. This had the advantage of shortening their defensive line as well as creating a much stronger position.

First Battle of Bullecourt Troops of the 4th Division assaulted the Hindenburg Line in what was a poorly planned & executed attack. The battle cost the 4th Division over 3,000 casualties – the largest capture of Australian troops on the Western Front.

Battle of Messines II ANZAC formed the southernmost flank of the British attack on Messines Ridge. 19/21 mines dug beneath the German lines were detonated causing the largest man-made explosion in history (at the time). II ANZAC casualties: 13,900.

Battle of Polygon Wood The 5th & 4th Divisions attacked the German stronghold of Polygon Wood. The “Plumer Battles” was a series of successful limitedobjective set piece attacks. Despite nearly gaining all their objectives, 5,770 casualties were suffered

31 Oct

Village of Passchendaele The 3rd Division and NZ Division advanced alongside five British divisions but were bogged down in the valley well short of their objective. After this, the Australians were relieved by the Canadian Corps for the Winter.

20 Dec

Second Conscription Referendum Like the first, was rejected by a slim margin.
