Editors’Letter Welcome to the May/June issue of Chiltern View magazine. This issue has been a really exciting one, in more ways than one! Firstly, there is a real feel about summer being on the way, with many of us spending more time in the garden. Hartwell Nursery have a lovely page (p16) about how to care for our bees, which is so important as they are sadly in decline - but there are many things we can do to help. Secondly, we have also had a record number of outdoor events that we have been asked to help promote, such as The Horses Trust (p68), The Chilterns Walking Festival (p58) and The Stokenchurch Fete and Dog show (p56). These are all wonderful days out for all the family so definitely worth adding them to your diary!

We haven’t forgotten our competitions in this issue either. We have Aylesbury Theatre (p60) who are offering tickets to one of their upcoming shows, as are Thame Players (p12), and we are very excited to announce that The Beacon Festival (p34) is back, and you have a chance to win a family ticket for the weekend, which is a fantastic prize. Make sure you get your entries in! We also must mention how busy Thame is going to be in the next couple of months as their Carnival, Duck Race and Music in the park are all back with a bang, plus new for this year is Taste of Thame: See page 38 for all the details you need. Lastly, when you’ve enjoyed everything mentioned here, The Risborough Festival is back in July, so one to look forward to (p67). And finally, we have an extra bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June. Things are definitely sounding more upbeat and positive! Until next time,

Beacon Festival Announces Line Up For 2022 A Queen Tribute, festival favourites Noble Jacks, Kioko, Fontanas, along with SkaSouls UK, Chic to Chic, Nile Rogers tribute, are among a multitude of diverse artists and ensembles ready to perform at Hill Farm, Watlington, on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June 2022.

This year marks the 10th annual festival, which takes place on a hillside overlooking the stunning South Oxfordshire scenery and boasts 4 stages and over 60 acts. How to reduce heat loss from your home - ‘the fabric first approach’. We all know that we are being asked to do ‘our bit’ in being more eco-friendly. How can we achieve this in our homes? A family asked EcoTiffin to do just that and after enlisting their help, they commented, “EcoTiffin saved us 37% in energy bills whilst increasing our square footage by 35%, giving us a warm and welcoming home.” Moisture in brickwork is the worst possible ingredient to have in your property and every effort should be made to prevent the ingress of moisture. Moisture in the brickwork reduces the bricks thermal capacity to retain heat and it has a chilling effect like a fridge on your home. Solid brick walls are by far the worst. Remember; wet walls are cold walls! ‘The fabric first approach’ is essential when improving insulation to roofs, walls, floors and windows which are just some of the ways of reducing heat-loss. The use of thermography

(thermal imagining) is an exciting and relatively new application in the building world. If you want to identify areas of excessive heat loss in your home on the way to creating an eco-friendly building, using thermographic equipment is a good place to start. Robert Tiffin (descendant of the original family) and highly respected building expert and Quantity Surveyor, has seen a rise in the number of families wanting to make their homes work more efficiently by reducing heat loss. Evidence from thermograms help to provide much of the data to substantiate Robert’s bespoke reports for each property in “seeing the unseen”. To the trained eye, the results can reveal important information enabling a clear diagnosis. Home owners look forward to maximising their comfort to a warm, cosy and cost effective, healthier environment for themselves and their families.

Managing wellbeing in Global uncertainty The war in Ukraine has left many across the world feeling stressed and anxious. Coming on the back of a global pandemic, news of the war has only compounded feelings of fear and uncertainty. A reason watching news from the Ukraine may be affecting health is because witnessing the suffering of others can actually cause us to feel pain: Here are some ways you can manage your relevant health. Acknowledge your feelings: Many people try and dismiss their feelings by saying things

like, “I’m being silly – there are people who are really struggling in the world.” While undoubtedly there are others suffering, this doesn’t invalidate the feelings you have. Acknowledging and accepting our feelings, without judgement can lead to improved mental health by reducing the burden of denying negative feelings. The reasons any person experiences each of these emotions, will be different. For example, being unable to see their loved ones during the pandemic. It might be helpful to write down feelings, or talk to a friend.

Speaking about struggling thoughts has been shown to disrupt the stress cycle. Being selective: when you view the news; avoiding it just before bed and first thing in the morning because it increases stress levels and make it difficult to relax. Ultimately, we can’t control the outcome of the conflict. But, we can have control over the things we can change, by responding to our own needs, helping one-another to retain our sense of wellbeing, when the world feels out of control. Best wishes, David

Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s Pear & Almond Cake

Introduction This soft, dense, almondy cake can be served warm for pudding with lashings of cream, or cold with a cup of tea or coffee. Firm Conference pears should work a treat here. Ingredients (serves six) • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 125g caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp • 3 pears, firm but not too hard, peeled, cored and quartered • 2 eggs • 75g whole blanched almonds or ground almonds • 75g self-raising flour Method 1. 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm diameter, springform cake tin and

line the base with baking parchment. 2. Put a saucepan over a medium heat and add 25g of the butter. When it’s sizzling, add a tablespoon of sugar and stir until it dissolves. Add the pear quarters and fry in the buttery caramel for five to ten minutes, until they start to brown and soften (the time taken will vary greatly, depending on how ripe the pears are). Put to one side to cool a little.

We need to talk to our children, tomorrow is never promised. So many people find this a taboo subject and I feel passionate that this needs to change. For it to be moved away from being a taboo subject and become a conversation that we have naturally with our children.

In 2021 I founded Memories Box to help support children who are, preparing for, or managing a bereavement or stress and anxiety. Memories Box provides families with the tools to help get conversations started in a natural and gentle way. Each premium white box contains an age appropriate storybook, a craft activity and paints to paint the box. Reading an appropriate storybook allows for further conversation and helps when the adult has no idea how or where to start. The craft activities compliment

the story and encourage discussions through play. By incorporating art therapy each box can be personalised by the child. They can then use it as a memory box to keep those precious mementos safely inside. Chilterns Walking Festival We are delighted to announce the 9th Chilterns Walking Festival will take place from 21st May to 5th June. It will feature a programme of over 70 walks and events throughout the Chilterns. We have a number of new walking experiences on offer this year, along with themed walks designed to celebrate some special anniversaries. Here is a flavour of what’s on offer: • Guided walks and events taking in some of our precious chalk streams to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Chalk Streams project: Includes a River Chess Discovery sessions for kids, with a walk and scavenger hunt, stories, craft and songs. • Nature walks at Barton Hills and Aston Rowant National Nature Reserves to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of National Nature Reserves.
