Editors’Letter Welcome to the July/August issue of Chiltern View magazine. We do hope you all enjoyed the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We felt a real sense of community as people of all ages and from all parts of the country, joined together. Whether it was a huge street party, watching all the events on TV, actually being in London, or simply a small afternoon tea, there seemed to be a lift of mood. It was great to see people enjoying the festivities and the long, bank holiday weekend. This is our Summer Issue, and we hope that as you read this, the weather has settled into some nice long, warm sunny days. Time to get the garden furniture out and the barbeques ready for some outdoor

dining. If you feel your garden may be a little neglected, we have many advertisers who can help. And if perhaps you feel you might deserve a bit of pampering, we have many beauty offers that would be just perfect to treat yourself. We loved this front cover, especially with the sun going down and the beautiful sunflowers below the balloons. The Oxford Balloon Festival at Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park on the 19th and 20th of August is a wonderful event, with a great number of balloons taking off and lots of other things to do as well. How to reduce heat loss from your home - ‘the fabric first approach’. We all know that we are being asked to do ‘our bit’ in being more eco-friendly. How can we achieve this in our homes? A family asked EcoTiffin to do just that and after enlisting their help, they commented, “EcoTiffin saved us 37% in energy bills whilst increasing our square footage by 35%, giving us a warm and welcoming home.” Moisture in brickwork is the worst possible ingredient to have in your property and every effort should be made to prevent the ingress of moisture. Moisture in the brickwork reduces the bricks thermal capacity to retain heat and it has a chilling effect like a fridge on your home. Solid brick walls are by far the worst. Remember; wet walls are cold walls! ‘The fabric first approach’ is essential when improving insulation to roofs, walls, floors and windows which are just some of the ways of reducing heat-loss. The use of thermography

(thermal imagining) is an exciting and relatively new application in the building world. If you want to identify areas of excessive heat loss in your home on the way to creating an eco-friendly building, using thermographic equipment is a good place to start. Robert Tiffin (descendant of the original family) and highly respected building expert and Quantity Surveyor, has seen a rise in the number of families wanting to make their homes work more efficiently by reducing heat loss. Evidence from thermograms help to provide much of the data to substantiate Robert’s bespoke reports for each property in “seeing the unseen”. To the trained eye, the results can reveal important information enabling a clear diagnosis. Six Reasons Not To Feed Red Kites Red kites are an iconic bird of prey of the Chilterns. If you live in this area, you’ll be familiar with the sight of these magnificent birds circling in the skies. Red kites were hailed as a conservation success when they were reintroduced to the Chilterns in the 1990s. Prior to this in the 1980s they were one of just three globally threatened species in the UK, largely due to persecution. © Alan Shearman

than they naturally would be. Red kites have sharp claws and a six foot wingspan. If the birds become a nuisance this could change public support for the welfare of these birds – leading us back to persecution of the birds. 2. Feeding encourages concentrated numbers of kites in one area which discourages songbirds and ground nesting birds from feeding and successfully bringing up their young. 3. The scraps of uncooked and cooked meat that people feed red kites don’t present a balanced, healthy diet.

Some people like to feed red kites in their gardens to see large numbers swooping to the ground. While this is an impressive spectacle, the Chilterns Conservation Board discourages feeding. The Board has had frequent complaints about red kites getting too close for comfort, stealing sandwiches from people’s picnics and dropping scraps of meat. Here’s why we shouldn’t feed red kites: 1. Feeding encourages red kites to become far bolder

4. Red kites dropping scraps of meat onto neighbouring gardens is a health risk and attracts rats and vermin.

5. Feeding discourages red kites from expanding their range and looking for new breeding territories and sources of food. This disrupts

their natural population spread. 6. Red kites can feed and thrive successfully in their natural habitat without our assistance and their natural diet is much better for them. Red kites were persecuted almost to the point of extinction from Victorian times onwards. People mistakenly thought that they killed lambs – the reality is that they mostly feed on carrion (dead animals), weigh less than a bag of sugar and they are too weak footed to catch anything other than a small rabbit. People were encouraged to feed the kites during their reintroduction in the 1990s, but feeding is no longer necessary now that the birds are thriving. So please avoid feeding the red kites – it’s far better to enjoy them soaring high above our gardens or in their natural environment on a walk in the Chilterns hills.

Raymond Blanc’s Lemon Cake Introduction Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years. What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud. Ingredients (serves eight) • For the lemon cake • butter, to grease the tin • 5 eggs • 300g caster sugar • 140ml double cream • finely grated zest of 3 lemons • 25ml dark rum • 1 pinch sea salt • 80g unsalted butter, melted • 240g plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar

Method 1. Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper. Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter. 2. Sift the flour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked. 3. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

4. Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes. 5. Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will recrystallise, losing its shine and crispness. Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set. 6. Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

This Year the owner of The Soft Water Shop, Rodney Stone, is celebrating 40 years of bringing soft water to the homes of Princes Risborough and the surrounding areas. Rod has a background of industrial water treatment and being at a loss of what to do when he made redundant, saw the opportunity of bringing soft and filtered water to the domestic market when noticing a shop for sale in Station Road, Princes Risborough. Having made the purchase in the summer of 1982 of the building The Soft Water Shop was born. Rod knew that it would be challenging work to build a business when most people did not know the benefits of having a water softener, let alone knowing what a water softener was. With hard work and a determination of bring soft water to the residents of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, Rod has over the last 40 years made owning a water softener a necessary luxury.

In the beginning Rod built and sold single cylinder water softeners requiring electric, which he named the Commander range. This range has changed and improved over the years and is still a firm favourite with customers as an entry level softener.

Keeping up with an ever-constant moving industry Rod, 20 years ago, made the decision to sell nonelectric water softeners which were becoming popular at that time. Finding your new normal After two years of lockdown, we are now re-emerging. We want to get back to normal, and are trying to find our way.

Lockdown is over, and we are going out more, but we find ourselves questioning: who do I want to see; should I wear a mask; dare I greet people with a hug? This hesitancy is natural as we take steps to return to normal. We might wonder: “What is normal?” Perhaps life has

changed: we have suffered a bereavement, we have lost or changed our job, relationships have moved on. We are looking for something new, a new normal. We can help ourselves by getting involved in new activities, making new friendships. And we are not alone – others are going through similar difficulties, and are keen to reach out for support and companionship. But what if this process of renewal gets stuck: the change is too hard, the stress

too high, the grief too painful and difficult to work through, self-confidence too low? You too are not alone.
