Editors’Letter Welcome to the March/April issue of Chiltern View magazine. It’s hard to believe that we are going to be celebrating Easter with this issue! Many of us really look forward to this time of year, as it feels like a new beginning. The winter is mostly behind us, and warmer days are coming. New life is all around, with bulbs and shoots emerging through the soil, Spring lambs frolicking in the fields and little chicks, bunnies and ducklings starting to be born. We hope you enjoy our front cover for this issue which we felt was bright and colourful, plus who could resist that quizzical, cheeky, little face peeking out at you. We also have an Easter bunny competition, and for your chance to win, just find him hiding inside the magazine and email your

answer to Coralie at salesprv@live.co.uk. You could win one of 5 yummy Easter Eggs we have to give away. Perhaps you are starting to feel more spring-like yourself and whether that’s doing something energetic, making home and garden improvements or just enjoying being outside more, we have lots for you to enjoy, plus it doesn’t have to cost the earth and can even benefit others. Lindengate offer beautiful surroundings to aid health and well-being, plus you can volunteer (p.32). Treat your mum to a lovely afternoon tea and help raise money for Scannappeal (p.40). Florence Nightingale have teamed up with Waddesdon, where you could purchase a Forever Snowdrop in memory of a loved one (p.52) or take part in the Big Pace Walk (p.64). Charities need our help more than ever after the last couple of years, so if you can help out, especially whilst having fun at the same time, then why not get involved. Until next time,

Coralie

BAKING

The Hairy Bikers’ DairyFree, Vegan Brownies Si, from the Hairy Bikers: The baking revolution of the Noughties was really something to behold, and the momentum of that in the years since has never slowed down. As a duo, we always felt we had unfinished baking business ahead of our Bakeation series, not least because being on the road, on motorbikes, does limit your ability to use an oven. Also, I think in some ways, baking can easily get pushed to one side when the necessity is there to get home and cook a meal for your family. Lockdown finally afforded more time to play about with baking ideas and ingredients, and this dairy-free variation on the classic brownie was one of my absolute favourites. These brownies contain no butter no eggs, and are vegan friendly, and these beauties still taste fantastic. Give them a try! Ingredients (serves 8-12) • 275ml plant-based milk, any sort • 150ml groundnut or walnut oil • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 tbsp ground flax seeds • 60ml hot water • 125g plain flour • 125g cocoa powder • ½ tsp baking powder • 100g light soft brown sugar • 75g caster sugar • ½ tsp salt • 150g vegan chocolate chips • 100g nut butter, any sort

16

Method Step One Preheat the oven to 180°C/ Fan 160°C/Gas mark 4. Line a 20x20cm brownie tin with baking paper or brush with cake-release spray. Step Two Whisk the milk, oil and vanilla extract together in a bowl and set aside. Mix the ground flax seeds with the hot water and leave to stand for 5 minutes. Whisk all the remaining ingredients, except the chocolate chips and the nut butter, together in a separate bowl. Step Three Beat the flax seeds into the wet ingredients, then add

the dry mixture and fold in as gently as you can. Add the chocolate chips. Step Four Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin. Dot spoonfuls of the nut butter all over the batter, then swirl it through, using the tip of a knife. Don’t mix it up too much! Step Five Bake for 20–25 minutes until the brownies have just set. Leave to cool completely, then cut into squares. If you want them extra fudgy, put them in the fridge for several hours. Otherwise transfer to an airtight container.

BOOKS

Finding a place of peace A voyage into the emotions of the mind this month, with three engaging and intriguing books to look out for. Be Yourself and Happier by Will Young Will Young has written an accessible A-Z guide on mental health, Be Yourself and Happier. The platinumselling and double-BRIT Award winning singer/ songwriter has long been a mental health advocate, and counts his experiences within the industry as a catalyst for various voyages of selfdiscovery that have led him to where he is today. “I have been at the coalface of depression and anxiety - a state of mind that’s always under threat, and only by exploring the reasons and causes behind this can we look to make changes.” In the book, Will discusses his breakdown in 2011, and how extensive therapy helped the star to unpick and interrogate

20

everything he thought he knew: how he formed his identity, what he relied on for self-esteem and how he behaved and communicated. Everything he has learnt over the past 10 years is now condensed into this accessible A-Z guide. Published by Bloomsbury on April 21st A Different Kind of Happy by Rachaele Hambleton Author Rachaele Hambleton a full-time mum to three daughters and one baby boy, stepmum to two boys and married to her ‘bird-boy’ Josh – has certainly earned her status as one of the most honest and sincere modern writers out there, largely through the success of her Part-Time Working Mummy, Sunday Times bestseller from 2018. Using the strength of her persona as a trusted parenting personality, she returns with A Different Kind of Happy, a book that explores the trials and successes of a blended family situation. The book is a soaring and

purposeful guide to modern parenting, with a few catastrophes thrown in along the way! Published by Penguin Random House on April 14th A Family Affair by Robyn Carr Anna McNichol knows how to take charge. Raised by a single mother, she’s worked to ensure her three children have every advantage she didn’t. And while her marriage has its problems, she values commitment and believes in ‘till death do us part’. Now an empty nester, she’s at the peak of her career and ready to seize the opportunity to focus on her future. But, life can change in an instant, and when her husband dies suddenly, Anna’s carefully constructed world falls apart. The mysterious young woman at the memorial service confirms her husband had been keeping secrets, and Anna is determined to get to the truth. Published by MIRA on April 5th

Charlotte Chenery I graduated from Oxford International College of Beauty in 2004 and have 18yrs experience in the beauty industry. I have previously owned two award winning salons in north and west Oxfordshire (which I sold to concentrate on my young children). I now specialise in permanent cosmetics, having trained in microblading in 2018, and this year I have expanded my treatment offering to include powder brows, ombré brows, eyeliner and lip blush. I trained with Candice Watson who is globally recognised as an expert in micro pigmentation to make sure my knowledge and technique is among the best in the industry.

look darker and fuller. This is a subtle treatment, yet it really enhances the eyes.

• Lip blush: this is becoming one of the most popular treatments! Gives a lovely subtle flush of colour, helps define lips and give them a fuller appearance without the need for filler. The treatment itself has anti-ageing benefits as it helps produce collagen. Benefits of permanent make up: Great for people with a busy lifestyle, people who gym/swim a lot, people who are physically unable to do their own make up. It won’t smudge or fade. Perfect if you have allergies/ hay fever etc • Eyebrows: when done properly they frame the face. I carefully map the eyebrows which helps to lift and open the eyes. • Eyeliner: the treatment I offer is called a “lash line” which places the pigment between the lashes making the eyelashes 36

March Offer: powder/ombré brows usually £300, now £200. Combination brows usually £350 now £250. BEAUTIFUL EYEBROWS WITH MICROBLADING

HIFU Nonsurgical facelift If recent photo’s have left you feeling like you could do with a gentle lift or a tighter jawline, without needles or surgery, a HIFU non-surgical facelift could be the right treatment for you. HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound and is an innovative, painless and non-invasive way to lift and plump sagging skin whilst reducing wrinkles, that lasts up to 18 months. Often referred to as a non-surgical facelift, HIFU uses highly concentrated ultrasound waves that penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. 20% of the result can be seen immediately after the treatment. 3-6 months later, the final result is visible. This method requires no artificial filler products or toxins. It relies solely on the body’s natural regenerative capacity. Since the treatment targets deeper layers, the surface of the skin is not affected. After the treatment, you can simply go about your usual activities as there’s no downtime.

to address crepey skin on the neck or décolleté. Is HIFU treatment safe? HIFU treatment has been used to lift and tighten skin on the face and body for over 10 years. Our HIFU practitioners undergo specialised training to be able to carry out this procedure. The most common areas for treatment are face, neck, décolleté, arms and stomach. How long does a HIFU facelift last? Depending on your lifestyle you should expect HIFU results to last around 12-18 months. How does HIFU facelift work? HIFU uses a tried-and-tested ultrasound technology to gradually strengthen your skin from deep within. The ultrasound energy stimulates natural collagen production, which starts to deplete as we age. This in turn plumps and tightens gradually over a period of 3 months, leaving you looking fresher and more radiant. Contact ERA Skin & Laser Clinic on 01844 698441 to book a free consultation.

We are an Audiologist led network of earwax removal clinics. The advantage of this is that if you feel that you have an ear wax blockage, but it turns out that there isn’t any, we can also provide hearing tests and give unbiased independent advice. If wax build up is causing a problem or is uncomfortable, it may need to be removed. Microsuction ear wax removal is a gentle and safe procedure. Earwax is natural and has an important function. It should not be routinely removed

Chiltern Arts Imagine entering a darkened church. Shimmering golden-green lights illuminate pillars and windows and quiet forest sounds bring the world around them to life. The place is imbued with magic, and it feels as though one has stepped into another world entirely. A concert experience like no other, and unforgettable performances from some of the UK’s top musicians, often interwoven with spoken poetry and readings. From April, look out for our friendly fairies nestling in towns around the Chilterns, accompanied by some of the winning entries from our 2022 Poetry Competition. And from 14th–21st May, immerse yourself in a week of glorious music across the area, including concerts in Henley, Marlow, Great Missenden, Princes Risborough, Hughenden, High Wycombe, Wendover, Amersham and Berkhamsted.

Finch and Seckou Keita, the Carice Singers, soprano duo Fair Oriana, pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, guitarist Sean Shibe, BBC Young Musician finalist Ben Goldscheider’s new horn trio and the City of London Sinfonia, as well as lunchtime concerts featuring young musicians from the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Young Artist platform. And, on the opening day of the festival you can join in with the music too, with a choral discovery day celebrating the 150th anniversary of both Vaughan Willaims and his Swedish counterpart, Hugo Alfvén.

Over the week in May you can hear the Albion String Quartet, the celebrated duo Catrin

socially as a person, as well as in our relationships with others. Others may be attempting to settle into their new routines. Many may be struggling with the fatigue, frustration, sadness, anger, grief, and anxiety (among other things) of adjusting. In all of this, here are a few important things to remember. 1. This situation is both uncertain and temporary! It’s okay not to feel okay. It’s also okay (and encouraged) to seek help and support! 2. Adjustment is a process that looks differently for most people. This process

is not linear or well-defined. Patience and flexibility are really important. 3. Setting a routine can be really helpful! In addition to doing your work, make sure to schedule time for your physical and emotional health, fun, creatively, social connection, and stress relief! I hope that you are able to see that you aren’t alone in this developing process. My wish for you is that you have found some peace in the chaos, and we can move forward, utilising a sense of urgency and desire to do better. Best wishes, David

Remember a loved one this spring with a Forever Snowdrop Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has partnered with Waddesdon Manor to launch a very special event to remember loved ones and raise funds for local hospice care this Spring. In March, a stunning temporary display of 500 bespoke 3-headed metal snowdrops will be installed at the Aviary Gardens at Waddesdon Manor. Each Forever Snowdrop will represent the life of a loved one and has been uniquely designed and hand crafted by British Ironworks. The Charity are offering you the opportunity to be a part of this event by purchasing one of these limited Forever Snowdrops, which also includes an invitation to a private viewing of the display on Monday 21st March whilst the grounds are closed to the public. The Forever

Snowdrop installation will then remain on display to the general public for two weeks. And, once the installation is removed, you will be able to take the flower home to display as a Forever Snowdrop keepsake. The money raised from the display will help to raise vital funds for hospice care, ensuring that the Florence Nightingale Hospice team are there to support patients and their families through the toughest times. Dedicate your Forever Snowdrop at https://www.fnhospice.org.uk/foreverflowers or call 01296 429975 for more information.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue My name is Coco; I’m a Chihuahua mix and I am 10 years old. I found myself in the care of Stokenchurch Dog Rescue as my previous owners could no longer care for me. I started to suffer with separation anxiety after a house move and then got used to having my humans at home during the lockdowns and found it hard when they went back to work. Please don’t let my age put you off adopting me. I still love going for my walks and enjoy my daily jaunts off site with the volunteer dog

56

walkers. I also love playing with tennis balls, so a nice enclosed garden where I can play fetch with my new human would be great. I haven’t had a huge amount of previous training, but you definitely can teach an old(er) dog new tricks – I’m very intelligent and will enjoy spending time with my new human, learning some new commands. I’m looking for a home where my human will be around for the majority of the time and will have the patience to build up my confidence when I do have to be left for short periods. I do not want

to share my new home with other dogs or cats and would prefer an adult only home. Can you offer this lovely young girl a loving and permanent new home?

GARDENING

Give your garden a spring clean to get it blooming March and April are possibly our favourite months of the year when the garden is waking up and bursting into life with beautiful and bright colours. It’s time to get out into your garden and give it a good spring clean to freshen it up and start creating those spring beds and borders. Your garden will need a little TLC and the number of jobs might be a little overwhelming, but we are here to help and have devised a checklist to assist you in tackling these spring tasks! Whether you have a garden or a window ledge, you can still get planting and sowing in spring. March •Tidy up your flower beds by removing weeds, leaves and debris •Cut back your hedges and neaten up your lawn edging •Prune fruit trees and shrubs, ideally before they start budding. Many will benefit from a light prune now, such as apple and pear trees, roses and hardy

58

fuchsias, but be wary that not all plants like to be touched yet. •Divide your perennials to keep them healthy and bulk out your flower bed •Add mulch and feed your beds to encourage growth and supress weeds •Plant roses, fruit trees and shrubs

•Plant vegetables outdoors such as potatoes, carrots, onions and radishes for a delicious summer crop. You can either do this straight into the ground or in large pots or deep containers

•Sow more tender vegetables indoors, such as tomatoes and chillies

•Carry out general maintenance; for example, power wash patios and paths, clean bird feeders and refill with fresh seeds, and check your garden furniture April •Sow hardy annuals and plant new perennials. How about putting your violas, marigolds, pansies or sweet peas in a pretty planter, a window box or a colourful container by your front door? •Plant summer bulbs such as Dahlias, Gladioli, Begonias and Lilies •Sow more vegetables and fruit outdoors, including lettuce, spinach, courgettes and strawberries. How about planting strawberries in a hanging basket as something a little different? •Talk to us about slug control •A job that many of us have been waiting for - on a dry day, set your mower blades to high and cut the grass! For help and advice on making your garden blooming beautiful, contact the team at Hartwell Nurseries. Happy gardening!

New Highway Code Rules for 2022 The Highway Code has received a refresh, with a new set of rules coming into force from 29th January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws having been updated, new rules will be introduced. The changes are extensive and further information is available on the website link located at the bottom of this article. However, the key areas are summarised below. Hierarchy of road users Previously The Highway Code stated all road users should be considerate towards each other, applying this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It meant that equal responsibility was originally placed on all road users for assuring the safety of others. The new hierarchy places responsibility on road users who could do greatest harm to others, and it is with them that the greatest obligation to protect the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists, horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed to pedestrians. Pedestrian priorities at junctions Prior to the rule change, road users would have given way to pedestrians who have started to cross the road into which they are turning. Under the new rules priority must be given to pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which means that if you are about to turn into a road and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way. New rule for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions The new rule states that when turning into or out of a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders or horse-drawn

62

vehicles, if doing so would cause the other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve. Safe passing distances An amendment to existing Rule 163 sets out safe passing distances for drivers when overtaking cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and those in horse-drawn carriages. Drivers must give at least a 1.5 metre space when overtaking a cyclist at speeds of up to 30mph. More space should be allowed when overtaking at speeds of more than 30mph. Rule 72 establishes the right for cyclists to ride in the centre of their lane, to ensure that they remain visible. When passing a pedestrian who is walking in the road, drivers should allow at least two metres of space and maintain a low speed. Rule 213 has also changed and now states that on narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see and be seen. Drivers should pass a horse at least 2 metres distance and at a slow speed. In all cases, drivers will now have to wait behind a motorcyclist, cyclist, horse rider, horse-drawn vehicle or pedestrian and not overtake if it is unsafe or not possible to meet these clearances. Extra care should be taken in poor weather, including high winds. For a more in-depth look at the new rules, visit: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk /government/uploads/system/uploads/ attachment_data/file/1037306/table-ofchange-to-the-highway-code.pdf www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

KINETICO WATER go limescale-free and love your shiny new home!

GULP! The damaging effects of hard water are far more serious than you might think Limescale in your water supply is impacting both you and your home. The most obvious sign you live in a hard water area is in your kettle. Mineral deposits in the water are left all over the kettle in the form of damaging and unsightly limescale. Most people just use a descaler and think no more of it. But, if you fill your kettle with hard water that also means you’re running it through your hot water boiler, washing machine, dishwasher, plumbing and you’re showering in it too! Hard Water

Soft Water

The answer is a Kinetico Water Softener Designed by the world’s leading manufacturer of water softeners, the Kinetico Premier Compact has a twin-tank system that prevents damaging limescale from ruining your home and ensures a constant supply of soft water 24 hours a day.

You’ll notice the difference straight away When you wash in soft Kinetico water your skin will feel softer and your hair will look shinier. Your tiles, shower screen and work surfaces will be so much easier and quicker to clean too.

Over the course of a year, you could save up to £400 (average family of 4) on cleaning products and toiletries. Save time and money, and look after your appliances Limescale build up in an appliance can cause it to work less efficiently and wear out more quickly. The more expensive the appliance the more costly it is to repair and renew. Simple and easy to install A Kinetico Water Softener is non-electric so there’s no wiring required. Installation is simple and running costs low. Compact and quiet, it can fit neatly under your kitchen sink.

You can transform the water you drink too

With a Kinetico Drinking Water Filter you can also enjoy filtered water on tap. It can take out impurities like chlorine, lead and bacteria to provide a constant supply of filtered water. Better than jug filtered water, it’s also cheaper per litre than bottled water. ✶ AP

How to reduce heat loss from your home - ‘the fabric first approach’. We all know that we are being asked to do ‘our bit’ in being more eco-friendly. How can we achieve this in our homes? A family asked EcoTiffin to do just that and after enlisting their help, they commented, “EcoTiffin saved us 37% in energy bills whilst increasing our square footage by 35%, giving us a warm and welcoming home.” Moisture in brickwork is the worst possible ingredient to have in your property and every effort should be made to prevent the ingress of moisture. Moisture in the brickwork reduces the bricks thermal capacity to retain heat and it has a chilling effect like a fridge on your home. Solid brick walls are by far the worst. Remember; wet walls are cold walls! ‘The fabric first approach’ is essential when improving insulation to roofs, walls, floors and windows which are just some of the ways of reducing heat-loss. The use of thermography

(thermal imagining) is an exciting and relatively new application in the building world. If you want to identify areas of excessive heat loss in your home on the way to creating an eco-friendly building, using thermographic equipment is a good place to start. Robert Tiffin (descendant of the original family) and highly respected building expert and Quantity Surveyor, has seen a rise in the number of families wanting to make their homes work more efficiently by reducing heat loss. Evidence from thermograms help to provide much of the data to substantiate Robert’s bespoke reports for each property in “seeing the unseen”. To the trained eye, the results can reveal important information enabling a clear diagnosis. Home owners look forward to maximising their comfort to a warm, cosy and cost effective, healthier environment for themselves and their families.

Are you protecting your home? • Climate change - how is my home coping? • Heat loss - how can we reduce it, wet walls are cold walls! Older properties were not built in an energy efficient way but there are plenty of things you can do to improve your comfort and have a healthier living environment.

Eco Tiffin is a well established family run business that undertakes extensive property restorations, refurbishments and modernisations, combining a passion for energy saving and conservation.
