Editors’Letter Welcome to the January/February issue of Chiltern View magazine. Last year we said how challenging 2020 had been and, although things have definitely improved, it seems we have all had to find a ‘different normal’ to live with. Sometimes it’s hard to stay positive when things start to get better and then seem to go backwards again; but here at Chiltern View we are so impressed by our wonderful local businesses who continue to be extremely busy, our community who are always planning events and fundraisers, and people in general looking forward and supporting each other. We have already had some snow this winter, but wouldn’t it be lovely (for the little and big kids at least), to have a little more for a few days. Not only can it look beautiful, but if you like to wrap up warm and get the sledge out, it can be so exciting! You can always cosy up

afterwards with a nice hot chocolate like our little lad on the front cover. There are also many things to entertain us that don’t involve getting a bit cold and wet, although this has never bothered Kenzo, who is back with his adventures (p20)! You might all laugh to see him covered in mud but imagine the clean-up operation ;). We would love to hear funny stories about your pets, so why not post them on our Facebook page www. facebook.com/chilternview. If you do prefer to stay dry, then why not visit Waterside Aylesbury Theatre (p 50) or Thame Players (p26) to see a show or enter our competitions to try and win tickets. You could also try out a Flight Simulator experience for something completely different (p 9); Connor tells you all about his trip there and how much he enjoyed it (p 8). We also have lots of community organisations (p 62/63) back up and running, so how about getting involved in something new for the New Year? Until next time

Flight simulator review On October the 16th, the day before my 24th Birthday, I was surprised by a lovely present from my Mum and Dad. They had signed me up for an hour with Stuart from the Flight Sim Wycombe, Flight Simulator Experience for the most realistic and engrossing flight simulator I’ve tried. As quite an enthusiastic gamer both now and when I was younger, I couldn’t wait to see how I would actually fair with a full-scale simulator used for training actual pilots. It has always been a dream of mine, after watching Maverick in Top Gun of course, to become a fighter jet pilot, so sitting in a real cockpit behind real controls was pretty thrilling. Stuart was a really friendly, knowledgeable and laid-back instructor and allowed me the right amount of freedom to choose how formally I wanted to learn. Firstly, we started by getting

familiar with the basic controls, and gradually working my way up to landing and taking off. This was swiftly followed by having a bit of fun with some simulated emergencies and trying some crazy turns. I really would thoroughly recommend the Flight Sim Wycombe if you have an interest in aviation, gaming, or just trying out a fun new experience. Although I may be a little biased since Stuart said he was very impressed with my flying, and I could potentially get my pilots licence… Connor

What kinds of exercise are best for happiness? While all physical activity is beneficial, research into the relationship between happiness and health is developing rapidly, exploring the possibility that impaired happiness is not only a consequence of ill-health but also a potential contributor to disease risk. Happiness associates several areas, including affective well-being (feelings of joy and pleasure), as well as our sense of meaning and

16

purpose in life, together with our own life satisfaction. Happiness is generally associated with better health. Physical activity is significantly related to life satisfaction and happiness in young, middle-aged, and older adults.

important for the physical health of youth, but also plays an important role in their mental well-being.

In adolescents, studies illustrate that even shortterm, physical activity promotes happiness and vice versa; Showing that physical activity is not only

The results support the promotion of physical activity for all.

In addition to the above, life satisfaction and happiness increased with increasing age.

WALK

Hound of the Baskerville’s Social Distancing Walk Summary This undulating stile free walk explores the Chilterns countryside around the south Oxfordshire village of Binfield Heath. There is plenty of flora and fauna to catch the eye. Length: 5 miles Start & finish: Binfield Heath Post Office & Stores, Binfield Heath, Henley on Thames RG9 4DU Access Information: Easy walking on good paths and country lanes Food & drink: The Post Office & Stores and The Bottle & Glass Inn Route Walk along Dunsden Way (signposted to Playhatch) for 1/2 mile to a chapel and turn right into Gravel Road. After about 200 yards, take the footpath on the left. 1. Follow the waymarked path along the field edge, switching fields through the tree belt, and continue on to join Tagg Lane. Turn right up the track past Spring Cottage to a path on the right just beyond the bend. 2. Take the path across a small wooden footbridge. Continue over the field and cross Kiln Road into Comp Wood. Stay straight ahead on the track through the wood and along the field 18

edge to a fork. Go left under the overhead cables to emerge on the lane at Bishoplands Cottages. 3. Turn right along the lane and look for a gap in the hedge after about 100 yards, signposted to Crowsley. Cross the field and descend into the shady wood of Lady’s Shaw. The path then rises alongside Morgan’s Wood, nipping through the hedge and up to join the Chiltern Way at Crowsley. The route will now follow Chiltern Way signs until the Bottle and Glass Inn. At the thatched Frieze Cottage turn right and follow the lane to its junction with Sonning Common Road. 4. Turn left and then right through the side gate at South Lodge. Just after the main entrance to Crowsley Park House, turn right through a gate. Walk between the green railings, through the next gate into the park and fork left. Continue through a kissing gate and across the open park. Bear left at the

path junction and down to another kissing gate. 5. Go through and turn sharp right, signposted to Binfield Heath. The path, known as Bones Lane, leads up past North Lodge and along the park boundary before dipping down, and then up, through Bones Wood ignoring other paths to left and right. Emerge from the wood, bear right and continue to the Bottle and Glass Inn. Cross the lane and follow Common Lane to its end. Bear left to return the start. Points of Interest A – Binfield Heath Chapel built in the 1830’s B – Comp Wood clay pits C – Historic cottages D - Crowsley Park, once home to the Baskerville family and with association to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskerville’s! E – Bones Wood being replanted with deciduous trees.

Kenzo’s Diaries January With the start of the Noo Ear I really wants to be a new pup. Last year I wanted to escape my hoomans garden, eat as many food pebbles as possible and just be a naughty pup. Now with the end of what the hoomans call ‘lock down’; basically, an excuse to spend all their time with me, I am going to be the best pup for mummy and daddy EVER. I have started some of my Noo Ears Resolutions early, and I am super proud of me already.

shouting my name, but that didn’t stop me, it looked so fun, so I ran and jumped straight in. It was amazing. I rolled and rolled until I wasn’t white anymore. Mummy sounded angry and she called me a “bad mucky pup”, I don’t know why she didn’t get in with me. But I obviously haven’t been too much of a bad pup because mummy bought me a noo teddy! He is so squishy and floofy. His name is Karl and I take him with me everwhere. I do get a bit sad sometimes, because if I sqweeze him on his tummy, he cries. I had to try and help him… so when mummy went out, I went to work. I carefully ripped his tummy with my teefs and took out all his floof. I found a squeeker and ripped it up for hurting Karl. Karl seemed a lot happier and didn’t cry anymore.

Firstly, I am making the best of this wet, cold and muddy wefer. It is SO much easier to get my white coat all muddy and stinky with all these huge puddles around. She thinks I do this to annoy her, but what mummy doesn’t know, is that the muddyest I can gets, means much more attention for me. When will mummy understand my genius plans? There was this huge puddle on my walkies yesterday; it was so big, so muddy and so exciting! I started running; mummy was

20

I knew mummy would be mad if she found all this floof on the floor, so I hid Karl in the garden so she wouldn’t know it was me. It was an emergency. I still love Karl, but he is a lot lighter and a lot less squishy now. Maybe one of his Noo Ears Resolutions was to lose some floof weight? Until next time Paw Pals, Kenzo xx

Pet Peeves

Reliable ways to improve your dog’s behavioural issues. • ONE - Excessive noise - After your dog has been triggered into barking, hold a treat in front of them and don’t give it until the dog has ceased making sound. Extend these periods of quiet time before giving the treat and eventually introduce a command such as ‘quiet’ or ‘shush’. • TWO - Messing or urinating in the house - First, establish why your dog is going inside. In older dogs it is important to rule out health issues first, while for pups, anxiety can be a contributing factor. Alternatively, it may simply be that a dog needs to be let out more regularly. In any case, it is important to reassure rather than punish, and consider calming aids to soothe them. • THREE - Digging - Digging in your garden

can be tempered by longer walks and extended play in order to tire a pooch out. If all else fails, you may want to consider consigning an area specifically for your dog to dig. • FOUR - Begging - To dispel begging during family mealtimes, make a point of sending your dog to their bed or even to another room until you are fi nished eating, at which point you can o er them food. • FIVE - Aggression - It can be easy to pinpoint the particular trigger that is bringing out the snarlier side of your beloved pet. In such cases, understanding, love and an attempt to avoid such events can solve the problem, but if the behaviour continues it may be worth seeking the help of a professional trainer.

How to reduce heat loss from your home - ‘the fabric first approach’. We all know that we are being asked to do ‘our bit’ in being more eco-friendly. How can we achieve this in our homes? A family asked EcoTiffin to do just that and after enlisting their help, they commented, “EcoTiffin saved us 37% in energy bills whilst increasing our square footage by 35%, giving us a warm and welcoming home.” Moisture in brickwork is the worst possible ingredient to have in your property and every effort should be mage to prevent the ingress of moisture. Moisture in the brickwork reduces the bricks thermal capacity to retain heat and it has a chilling effect like a fridge on your home. Solid brick walls are by far the worse. Remember; wet walls are cold walls! ‘The fabric first approach’ is essential when improving insulation to roofs, walls, floors and windows which are just some of the ways of reducing heat-loss. The use of thermography

(thermal imagining) is an exciting and relatively new application in the building world. If you want to identify areas of excessive heat loss in your home on the way to creating an eco-friendly building, using thermographic equipment is a good place to start. Robert Tiffin (descendant of the original family) and highly respected building expert and Quantity How to reduce heat loss from your home - ‘the fabric first approach’. Surveyor, has seen a rise in the number of families wanting to make their homes work more efficiently. Evidence from thermograms help to provide much of the data to substantiate Robert’s bespoke reports for each property in “seeing the unseen”. To the trained eye, the results can reveal important information enabling a clear diagnosis. Home owners look forward to maximising their comfort to a warm, cosy and cost effective, healthier environment for themselves and their families.

Are you protecting your home? • Climate change - how is my home coping? • Heat loss - how can we reduce it, wet walls are cold walls! Older properties were not built in an energy efficient way but there are plenty of things you can do to improve your comfort and have a healthier living environment. Eco Tiffin is a well established family run business that undertakes extensive property restorations, refurbishments and modernisations, combining a passion for energy saving and conservation.

YOUR LOCAL THEATRE COMPETITION

Agatha Christie at Her Very Best! Cast doing a read-through

It’s 1939. Europe teeters on the brink of war. Ten strangers are invited to Soldier Island, an isolated rock near the Devon coast, as the weather turns for the worse. They include a reckless playboy, a troubled Harley Street doctor, a formidable judge, an uncouth detective, an unscrupulous mercenary, a God-fearing spinster, two restless servants, a highly decorated general and an anxious secretary.

Cut off from the mainland, and with their hosts mysteriously absent, they are each accused of a terrible crime. All that they have in common is a wicked past they’re unwilling to reveal and a secret that will seal their fate. When one of the party dies suddenly, they realise they may be harbouring a murderer among their number. The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again… and again. One by one they are picked off. Who will survive? And who is the killer? And Then There Were None is the bestselling crime novel of all time and one of Agatha Christie’s most famous thrillers. In 2015 it was voted the World’s Favourite Christie in a global vote to mark her 125th anniversary.

Revolutionary Technological Breakthrough for Incontinence Now available in Thame Medical grade, technologically advanced and clinically proven treatment that works while you are fully clothed, is able to rehabilitate the pelvic floor and is available in Covid secure clinic.

Urinary incontinence; an unintentional passing of urine, is an embarrassing problem suffered by many. The NHS estimates that 3-6 million people in the UK may experience urinary incontinence in some form. While the condition affects men and women, young and old, the chances of developing urinary incontinence are increased by a number of factors, including pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the onset of the menopause. It is estimated that between 30 to 40% of women will suffer from the problem at some point in their lives. While simple lifestyle changes help many, for others this is insufficient and additional help is required. ERA Skin and Laser Clinic in Thame has recently introduced a revolutionary treatment, the Emsella Chair, which tackles stress and urge urinary incontinence, non-surgically. The treatment is a medical-grade, clinically proven, physiotherapy treatment for pelvic floor rehabilitation. It substantially improves the quality of life for those suffering from serious urinary incontinence.

Patients sit, fully clothed, on the chair and the magnetic fields exercise the pelvic floor with the equivalent of 11,000 voluntary contractions in the 25–28-minute treatment cycle, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and improving continence. The number of treatment cycles required is bespoke, but typically patients need an average of six treatments. Emma Rothery, Clinical Director of ERA, is heartened to have been able to bring about such a change in the quality of the lives of her patients. “We’ve been delighted with the results the Emsella Chair is achieving for our patients The Emsella Chair technology has been successfully harnessed in physiotherapy by the top athletes worldwide for muscle rehabilitation. It’s a clinically proven, life changing treatment and we are thrilled to be the only clinic in Oxfordshire offering Emsella. 98a High Street, Thame, Oxfordshire OX9 3EH To find out more call the clinic on 01844 698441 or email info@eraclinics.co.uk

TRAVEL

Sleep Tight The enduring popularity of the Caledonian Sleeper. Next year marks the 150th anniversary of the commencement of one of the most enduring pieces of British railway history – the Caledonian Sleeper. In many ways, it’s the simplest of concepts – the vanquishing of a long, arduous and winding train journey with the simple use of sleep! After all, why endure up to 12 hours of unrelenting travel on a train when you can close your eyes, waking up to the bright, breath taking wonder of the Highlands in the early morning.

It was the Victorians who first struck on the concept. In February 1873, the North British Railway unveiled the first ever sleeping car. A single carriage, it was attached to the King’s Cross to Glasgow service which headed north up the East Coast Mainline. Six months later, the rival Caledonian Railway pegged

30

three cars to its nightly mail service train, and so was born a transport legacy that exists to this day. Currently, two Mark 5 fleet trains are operated on each day of the week, with the exception of Saturday night/Sunday morning. The Highland Sleeper ventures to Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William, while the Lowland Sleeper terminates at either Edinburgh Waverley or Glasgow Central. Trains leave London Euston at 9.15pm. Speed is usually between 80mph to 100mph and, depending on destination – there are actually 46 stations along the route – they will offer the best part of a full night’s sleep by arriving early morning. The furthest possible route is London to Fort William, with arrival in the Highlands at 9.57am. The Sleeper experience these days is taken to be a semiluxurious affair. Lounges exist at many stations along the route, for those picking it up midway rather than beginning their adventure in London; and accommodation includes double beds, breakfast, en-suite facilities, WiFi and everything else you would expect from an overnight stay. Prices are around £400 for a premium room in single occupancy, £225 for club, and £200 for classic, with reclining

seats (no room facilities) starting at around £80. Around 300,000 passengers per year catch the train, and let’s not dwell too long on the fact the Serco-run service loses money almost every year.

The reason it is kept going is to offer those who choose to travel a unique feeling of stepping back in time, of travelling through the night. There is something captivating about retracing the steps of those rail fanatics of the past; of traversing routes that have shaped themselves and their surroundings across multiple decades, while the faithful Caledonian Sleeper rumbles on. And of course, the majesty that confronts many when they wake up hundreds of miles from home is another reason why this experience is truly one to cherish.

GULP! The damaging effects of hard water are far more serious than you might think. Limescale in your water supply is impacting both you and your home. The most obvious sign you live in a hard water area is in your kettle. Mineral deposits in the water are left all over the element and up the sides in the form of damaging and unsightly limescale. Most people just use a liquid descaler from time to time and think no more of it. But, if you fill your kettle with hard water that also means you’re running it through your hot water boiler, your washing machine, your dishwasher and your plumbing. Never mind your family are bathing in it too!

The result? Hard water is costing you and your home.

Not only that, when you wash, bathe or shower in hard water the result is often dry, irritated skin and lifeless, dull hair.

The answer is a Kinetico Water Softener Designed by the world’s leading manufacturer of water softeners. The Kinetico Premier Compact’s twin-tank system prevents damaging limescale from ruining your home and ensures a constant supply of wonderfully soft water 24 hours a day.

You’ll notice the difference straight away Appliances like your washing machine are wearing out quicker than they should and you’re using far more cleaning products and toiletries than you really need to. 36

When you wash in wonderfully soft Kinetico water your skin will feel softer and your hair will look shinier. Not only that, you’ll your tiles, shower screen To advertise herefind please email salesvv@live.co.uk

quiet, it can fit neatly in a corner under your kitchen sink. Installation offer is subject to survey and any further costs are quoted prior to purchase.

You can transform the water you drink too Over the course of a year, you could save up to £400 (average family of 4) on household cleaning products and toiletries.

Save time and money, and look after your appliances Limescale build up in any appliance that uses hard water can cause it to work less efficiently and wear out quicker. The more expensive the appliance the more costly it is to repair and renew. Soft water causes none of these problems and therefore appliances will work better and last longer.

Simple and easy to install

With a Kinetico water filter you can also enjoy great tasting water straight from the tap. A high carbon filter helps take out impurities like chlorine, lead and bacteria to provide a constant supply of fresh, delicious drinking water 24/7. Far better than jug filtered water, it’s also a lot cheaper per litre than bottled water.

GARDENING

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and allround horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about making time for your garden to serve you as a place of creativity and contemplation. It was pointed out to me a few years ago that a lot of my novels contain a sort of yearning for something. That led me to think, maybe I’ve got a deep in-built craving or hankering. Maybe we all have, and in life we’re all looking for something… something more. I think the lucky ones are those who find it and know when they have found it. So where am I going with this? Well, I do sometimes feel a lot of those wants and desires can be arrested by going to a place that gives you quiet contemplation. It

38

was John Lennon who said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”. Well stop being busy, stop making other plans,

and for goodness’ sake get out in that garden of yours and enjoy it! You see, a real problem for a number of gardeners is the fact we spend hours, days, weeks and months tending to that glorious bit of land. We shovel, trim, cut, prune and pick until our hands are blistered and our knees are sore, yet omit to actually take a step back, or pull up a chair,or just sit on the blessed grass and soak it all in.

gardening; it’s in the ability to stop! So as we get ready for when winter morphs wonderfully into spring, perhaps try to do less, not more. I know that can be easier said than done; there are always jobs to do, and there will be those of us who cannot sit still in the garden - we find it difficult to stop, to accept a space how it is, always spotting imperfections here and there. In truth, it is all those blemishes and flaws that make nature what it is - beautiful. I’ve got two gardens of my own and I’m very proud of them - one in Hampshire, and a small coastal plot on the Isle of Wight. They are my achievements, my own little bit of land… but they’re only relevant and special if I remember to spend time in them, enjoying them, and sometimes, you know, doing nothing much at all!

Satisfaction in your garden sometimes comes in not www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

RECIPE

Tom Kerridge’s Chicken & Coconut Curry Introduction Award-winning British chef Tom Kerridge lost 11st through a dramatic weight-loss regime, though there was one dinner-time favourite that remained on his personal menu throughout – the trusty curry! Ingredients (serves four) • 2 onions, finely chopped • 8 garlic cloves, grated • 4cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated • 2 tsp sea salt flakes • 1 tsp each ground ginger, turmeric, cumin and cinnamon • 1 tsp chilli powder • 400ml can coconut milk • 200g chopped tomatoes • 50g desiccated coconut • 2 hot green chillies, thinly sliced • 1 lemon, juice only • 6 skinless and boneless chicken thighs • 6 tbsp roughly chopped coriander • 4 tbsp roughly chopped green chillies • Salt and pepper • Vinegar

46

I’ve always been effusive about curries. For me, the hotter, the better. Not only is that a taste preference for me, but it’s scientifically proven that when we eat spicy chillies, our brains are tricked by the heat into releasing endorphins, which results in a natural high.

2. Add the garlic and cook, stirring for 4–5 minutes, or until the onions are golden. Add the ginger, salt and all the dry spices, stir and cook for 2–3 minutes, or until fragrant.

So you get a huge food sensation on multiple levels. “My curry dishes make use of homemade sauces stuffed full of my favourite spices – curry leaves, turmeric, paprika and my secret ingredient, vinegar. I’ve always found the acidity of the vinegar complements the spice fantastically, and I recommend you try.

4. Now pour in the coconut milk and chopped tomatoes and stir. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.

“The curry scene is really part of British food heritage now, and as the winter months draw in, it’s the perfect time to warm up with that unique combination of flavour, heartiness and sensory overload.”

3. Add the chicken and wait until cooked through.

5. Dry-fry the desiccated coconut in a frying pan until golden. Add it to the curry with the fresh chillies and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until thickened. 6. Season with lemon juice, vinegar, salt and pepper. Stir in the coriander and chopped chillies and serve in warmed bowls.

Method 1. Pour a little oil into a large saucepan. Add the onions and cook over a low heat for 10–15 minutes, or until they start to colour. www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk

Risborough Rangers After the result at Baldock Town on Saturday 13th November I feel Risborough Rangers’ 47 game unbeaten run in the league should be given some form of recognition, as it has been an amazing journey since our Manager Mark Eaton arrived at Rangers back in November 2019. Risborough have not lost a league game since April 9th 2019, when they lost 1-0 at Winslow United back in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One and it continues now, well into this 4th season.

Since then Rangers have competed for two seasons in the Hellenic League Division One, going 23 games unbeaten in 2019/20 when whilst sitting top and clear by 14pts, the season became null and void through the pandemic. Then in 2020/2021 another 6 games were played before again, the season was bought to a sudden halt again, through Covid-19. Moving to this campaign and having been switched across laterally to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division after gaining promotion through PPG, Risborough are still unbeaten after 8 games

© Charlie Carter

and are battling it out at the Top of the League in their very first time in the club’s history as a Step 5 Club. What makes it more poignant is that it is also Rangers 50th Anniversary this year, having been formed in 1971. To achieve this remarkable run is nothing short of amazing and keeping the record going in 3 different leagues is a fabulous effort. Long may it continue..... Steve Burnett

What our customers say: "My partner and I started Coco Accounting last year and decided to place an advert in Chiltern View to ‘test the water’. Since then we have received some significant enquiries of which some resulted in new customers and some of those are now with us for the long term. We believe we are testament to the fact that local advertising really does work and in today’s internet driven world, the word ‘local’ can mean so much, especially for a small business such as ours as we can meet our customers regularly to collect documents and discuss their business face to face. Thank you Chiltern View for giving us a head start and we look forward to continue growing our business with your help! David Saint - Coco Accounting

Fiction: The Maid by Nita Prose Molly the Maid is thrown into the spotlight when she discovers an infamous guest, Mr Black, very dead in his bed. Shew becomes embroiled in a hunt for the truth, learning who to trust as she navigates the secret underbelly of the Regency Grand Hotel. Escapist, charming, and introducing a truly original heroine, The Maid is a story about how everyone deserves to be seen, and how the truth isn’t always black and white. Published by Harper Collins History: How Civil Wars Start by Barbara Walter Acclaimed expert Barbara F. Walter, who has advised on political violence everywhere from the CIA to the U.S. Senate to the United Nations, explains the rise of civil war and the conditions that create it, explaining how backsliding democracies means citizens becoming more polarised, and that increases the chances of conflict becoming even more widespread.
