Volume XIV, Issue III

The Cost of Being Late Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin group of companies, recently told CNBC that his biggest productivity tool is punctuality. In this day and age, where many of us are wearing multiple hats, it is hard to stay on schedule, but if one of the busiest CEOs in the world can do it, you can as well. There is a cost to being late, it may not be quantifiable, but it is real.

Being on time is not only good etiquette, it is good business. In an article by the website Commonsense, it is noted that there are somewhere around 11 million meetings a day in the United States, accounting for about 70 percent of managers’ time, and equating to as much as 15 percent of personnel costs. We may all hate meetings, but they are a necessity, and as these statistics show, an investment in time and money for businesses. So, consider the productivity lost when meetings begin late due to key participants arriving in late. The Independent, a British based publication, published the results of a study about being late in 2012. This study of nearly 600,000 workers is telling. The study showed that each late worker loses an average of 97 months of productivity. When all costs are factored in, this is 9 billion pounds sterling (about $11 billion U.S.) lost each year. Being late has an impact both on the company’s bottom-line and on the employee’s psyche. Nearly half of all the workers from the 2012 Stan Musial study admitted that being late impacted on their concentration and interaction during the meeting. These feelings can last after a meeting as workers can feel guilty and other workers could harbor resentment towards them.

“If you’re not 15 minutes early… you’re late!”

Being late can impact your reputation. Think of a time where you were in a meeting and an attendee came in late - how did you react to them? It likely made a difference in how you perceived that individual and possibly their business. Perception is often reality until proved different. An ABC News article states that experts generally say there are different types of chronically late people. One type is the “rationalizer.” This person typically blames factors outside of their control for making them late, like their kids or spouse. There are types who are more like “absent-minded professors” who are forgetful. Some are “rebels” who want to defy authority or common mores and get a physiological “high” by keeping people waiting.

Cost of Being Late

► Continued from page 1

However, the most common late person is more deadline-driven who is driven more by the adrenaline rush from the tension of running on a short timeline. Being on time does not take much, just a bit of planning. Here are some simple tips for fighting lateness:  

    

Give yourself an extra 15 minutes for each scheduled meeting Accurately account for how long it will take you to complete a task or travel to a common meeting place Don’t over-commit by learning how to simply say “no” Know when to stop obsessing over details which may only matter to you, this eats up time Step away from your devices - limit distractions Resist the impulse to do that “last thing” before you leave for a meeting Give yourself a penalty for being late - late for a lunch meeting? Then you’re buying

In the end, being constantly late can have an impact in your trustworthiness and keep you from reaching your goals.

ASIANS FOR MIRACLE MARROW MATCHES A3M's journey began in 1991 when thirty-six year old Nick Suzuki needed a marrow donor. Faced with a serious lack of registered donors of Asian descent, the family was left with only one option: recruiting donors themselves, in the hopes of finding a match. This marked the beginning of A3M and since then the organization has played an integral role in providing patients with the guidance and support to recruit donors in their communities. A3M's bilingual staff educates, informs and registers people from diverse communities, to be potential marrow donors, in the national marrow donor registry.
