While microchips have already been inserted in some workers in a Swedish company, Epicenter, on August 1st, Three Square Market, the first U.S. company will be offering insertion of a RFID microchip to its workers. The voluntary program allows those employees who choose to have the chip injected to perform any task that that would normally involve an I.D. card. For example, employees will be able to unlock doors to gain entry into the office building, login into the copy machine and computer, and even pay for purchases in the break room micro market with the convenience of just a swipe of their hand. The RFID chip, a radio frequency identification tag roughly the size of a grain of rice, will be injected under the skin between the thumb and forefinger. The microchip is capable of containing various types of information, and when scanned, the chip can provide a person’s ID number linking it to a database with more detailed information about the wearer. As with any new technology, the future of microchipping both within and outside the workplace has many interesting potential applications as well as downsides that need to be considered and explored. With future chip standardization, individuals should consider the following advantages & disadvantages. RFID Advantages   

  

Replace chip embedded plastic cards that we use for our daily activities. Easier personal identification such as passports & driver’s licenses. Access to medical history in an emergency; the chip wouldn’t contain medical history but an ID number could access the information from a database. Especially useful for people suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Keep track of children (lost or kidnapped), the elderly, patients, and criminals using a GPS tracking device within the chip. Digital identity brought to your home to automatically start your car, unlock your doors, control the thermostat, and change TV channels. Firearms would allow only the registered owner to fire them (Smith & Wesson and Brown have already developed this implant system). More on Page 3

Board Chair’s Report I was inspired! The Chamber provides me priceless connections and experiences with our local people. Trinity Printing had an outstanding ribbon cutting on this past Thursday! In just three years, this business has grown due to the leadership of its owner, Paul, and the dedicated and friendly staff. Their religious fervor and patriotic displays are a sight to see, and promotes their business philosophy and ethics. Many of us were moved by the staff vocalists singing the hit song, “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” accompanied by guitar, percussion and piano. How talented! Introspectively, I now need to look at my own business to see if I have a “theme”, a “common thread” that draws my own following. To develop a uniqueness in one’s own Dr. Mark Chung business, requires ideas from my business peers. 2017-2018 Chamber Board Chair So I encourage all to continue supporting ribbon cuttings, and other events, and as a business family, we can help each other by sharing thoughts and new improvisations that can incorporated in our own business. We are all leaders in our field of expertise, but what makes us unique from our competitors? Well, feel free to ask your customers and your trusted Chamber members, and perhaps we can help you develop and promote that “special trademark” you worked so hard for. - Mark

RFID Disadvantages 

  

Injected microchip could pose a threat to our health. Would we need to implant more than one chip? A potential problem is that the chips can migrate to a different location, making it hard to locate them. The implantation site could become infected. Patients having a MRI cannot take anything metal, including microchips. There is also a potential risk associated with defibrillators. Microchips could take our freedom away. Could they be mandatory for applying for a job, admittance to a school, or to obtain insurance? Microchips could become a prime target for hackers. Could your data could be corrupted, wiped or copied with the intention of criminals using your data and coping it onto or replacing it with their own data, altering your – and their – physical identity. Would we lose our privacy and be “tracked” by the government? RFIDs can basically be scanned from a few feet away, by anyone who has a reader. This is a legitimate concern that requires stringent privacy controls and security measures.

The manager of Three Square Market emphasized that the chips are FDA approved and removable. The chief executive explained that the chip they are implanting in their employees have limited capabilities. They are not tracking devises; they can only give data when data is requested. However, there is concern that once the chip is implanted, it would be very hard to stop a widening of its usage. And while the companies using these chips often claim that they are secure and encrypted, there is still the possibility that they could be easily hacked. It will be interesting to follow up with Three Square Market’s voluntary microchip program and see if this employee microchip program gains momentum in the U.S. workplace.
