I recently heard a story of a grandparent who took his grandchild to a wellknown retailer and gave him $10 to spend on whatever he wanted. After wandering through the toy department for some time, the grandparent asked the child why he was having such a difficult time deciding on what to buy. The child answered that he wasn’t sure because there was no star ranking (customer feedback) on the toys he was looking at. Even at a young age, this child has been exposed to one of the reasons why so many are choosing to buy online instead of going to a store. There is no doubt that more consumers are buying products online, through their computer, phone, or tablet. The National Retail Federation expects online retail to grow 8 – 12 percent this year, compared to an expected 3.7 – 4.2 percent growth rate for total retail sales. This could mean online sales could be as much as $443 billion. So online shopping is taking over retail, right? Maybe not. Shoppers still want an “in-store” experience. Ninety-four percent of total retail sales still come from traditional “brick-and-mortar” stores accounting for nearly $4 trillion. However, traffic in stores is falling about 15 percent each year. “The Los Cerritos Center continues to set annual records for attendance with about 12 million guests visiting the mall last year,” said Ken Kraus Senior Property Manager for the Los Cerrtios Center. “While On-line retailing is increasing, it still only represents less than 10% of the total retail sales annually which means the brick-and-mortar retailers still are the main draw for consumers. Traditional retailers are now investing heavily to build their online capabilities to expand their e-commerce sales, and there are numerous e-commerce retailers that are rolling out new bricks and mortar stores like Amazon, Athleta, Warby Parkier and others to expand their overall business. We firmly believe that consumers still want to experience the shopping experience and have worked to provide a great shopping center with the right mix of stores, restaurants and entertainment to meet their needs.” Just who is shopping in stores? You might be surprised to learn that, according to a 2015 report, Millennials are just as likely to buy in a store as generations before them. The report also showed that shoppers ages 25 to 34 planned to shop in stores just as often, or even more, than they did in the previous year. Shoppers still value interaction with a store associate with 90 percent more likely to buy when they receive help from a “knowledgeable” store associate. Baby Boomers expect store associates to be able to direct them to the product that fits their needs and budget. Online v. retail shopping actually intersects more than you might think. Many of those shoppers mentioned above might just be in stores to look at More on Page 9

Shopping: Stores v. Online products they’ll later buy online. This practice, called “showrooming” continues to grow. It’s estimated that about half of all shoppers will look at products then make the purchase online. The opposite is true about three-quarters of the time, where customers will research products online before going into a store or even use their smartphone while in the store to find out more about the product or price.

interactions” influence about 36 cents of every dollar spent in a retail store. Maybe there is no clear winner when considering online v. retail sales. We know that retail sales are growing and that online sales will creep past in-store sales at some point. Last year we spent more than three present more than the previous year and over four percent during the holiday season. Sales are still solid through March of this year, even with the bad weather back east.

That intersection of online and retail becomes clearer when you find out that by 2018 the internet will account for or influence 59 percent of all purchases. Out of that figure, more than half would Whether you shop online or like to visit your favorite store, it’s still rather buy at a store than online. In the end, “digital clear to see that we all like shopping. That’s a good thing.

Social Media Tip of the Month Tip of the month

Schedule You Updates (from Fast Company.com) Convince & Convert founder Jay Baer shared a great tip in this Social Media Examiner post for scheduling your updates at just the right time.

If you’re trying to reach business people like marketers, office workers or managers, this is especially handy. Jay sets his Buffer schedule to post updates just before or just after the hour. He does this to catch people who are checking social media just before or just after a meeting. Here’s Jay’s example: Meeting is scheduled from 1-2 pm. Meeting lets out slightly early at 1:57 pm, and attendees check Twitter on the way back to their desk. Meeting goes a little long, and that dip into social media occurs at 2:03 pm. Jay also makes a note that scheduling Tweets around common lunch and dinner times (if you can–time zones can make this a bit difficult) is a good way to make sure more of your posts are seen. When looking further into the science of timing, there are other great tips beyond Jay’s ideas.

Tip of the month

Networking Tip of the Month Listen more than you talk (from Entrepreneur Magazine, Jan. 25, 2017) As the saying goes, “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." Focus more on the other person and less on yourself and you will be perceived as being the most engaging person in the room.

Start out by asking the right questions and then listen to the other person’s response. Some questions might include: “What do you like to do in your spare time?” and “What motivated you to start your own business?” Most people enjoy talking about themselves, and these kinds of questions prompt people to open up. In time, they might even reveal their background, motivations, philosophy and challenges. Even though you might not agree with everything the person says, all you have to do is be a good listener. Keep your networking efforts simple. Become interested in others, find out what matters to them, and then center your conversations on their interests and priorities. When you are genuine and sincere, your network (and eventually your net worth) will organically grow.
