Just Say “No” to Hackers By Scott Smith, CEO

It seems like there’s news of a new cybersecurity attack just about every week; however it seems we only hear about these “hacking” attacks when large firms and government agencies are hit by these criminals. I thought it was only the “big guys”, too until last week when my email was hacked, and an email with a malicious attachment was sent out. I had to go through my mailing list advising my contacts not to open the attachment. The good news, if there is any, is that this malicious email went to both the Chamber’s IT contractor and a former speaker at one of our events…on cybersecurity. Both took immediate action, and all seems to be back to normal. However, this isn’t the case for thousands of small businesses. In fact, one report notes that about half of all small businesses have been breached in the past year. A few years ago I wrote that companies were in two groups: those who have been hacked and those who have and don’t know it yet. Although that remains true today, most are now realizing the worst and that their information is vulnerable. Small businesses, with their increased use of digital information and often less than adequate security, make tantalizing targets for hackers. Small business owners are typically shocked when they are hacked. An insurance industry survey showed that over 80 percent of the small business owners they talked with thought they did not have any information worth stealing. Of course, they do! They have bank account, customer, and employee information. With identity theft on the rise, they are perfect targets. So, how do you protect your company’s digital assets? You need to consider your computers and digital presence as another building. You need to lock all the ways into your “digital building” and keep valuables in a safe. You likely need anti-virus software to protect your systems from malicious software, also known as malware. Next, you lock the doors and window by using a firewall to protect your system from unauthorized users. Just like having backup paperwork in a safe or offsite, you need to backup your data to bring your business back online when you are attacked. “Cybersecurity is a must have for every business,” says Gerry Lumba from SoCal Computer Guys. “Hacking is all over the news and can put you out of business. I work with my clients to purchase a reliable virus scan software and firewall to protect your network. The harder you can make it for a hacker to get into your system, the more likely they are to move on to a new target.” Every company should have specific procedures in place to protect their digital assets. Here are some quick steps:  Update your software to the latest version to fight the newest forms of malware  Keep your employees educated on the need to maintain a secure presence More on Page 3

President’s Report Fall is upon us and with that comes many Chamber events, included the Taste of the Region & Business Expo, which took place in late September. This event is one of my favorites. With such a huge turnout this year, I think it’s a community favorite as well. This year we had about 80 exhibitors, including about 25 restaurants. I can’t tell you how many attended this year’s event, but it was very busy! Don’t worry if you missed this year’s event, next year’s is bound to be even better! I would be remiss if I didn’t say a few words about the horrific event that took place in Las Vegas. It’s hard to 2017-2018 believe we live in a world with such evil, but I know we Chamber Board Chair are better than this. I proudly served in the United States Navy, where I witnessed the bravery every American has in them. It’s this courage that will get us all through this tragedy. Let’s hope and pray it’s the last.

Develop and implement a formal security policy so that everyone is on the same page Know what to do and who to call if you are breached

You may also want to consider cybersecurity insurance. With many general liability policies now reducing or eliminating this coverage, cybersecurity insurance has become vital coverage for businesses. Insurance companies now offer a variety of coverages for just about every sized business and budget. You will need to look at covering both first-party and third-party types of coverage. First-party coverage encompasses those “general” costs related to the loss from legal assistance to business interruption to notifying customers. Third-party coverage protects your company if you were at the center of the breach for costs like legal defense. In the end, your company is only as safe as you make it. Spend time getting to know the threats your company faces. If your company belongs to an association, ask them for guidance. If not, seek out advice from an IT or cybersecurity expert. Just remember to lock those digital doors and windows and put that electronic data back in the safe.

Cerritos Sheriff’s Station The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is seeking your help to reduce nighttime residential and vehicle burglaries within this region. Criminals are adaptive creatures. Enhanced daytime patrols, security cameras, and automatic license plate reading technologies have caused some would-be burglars to switch their illicit activities to nighttime. Thieves appear to be surveilling residential neighborhoods at sunset and beyond looking for homes that appear to be unoccupied. Homes that have no exterior or interior lights on draw the unwanted attention of would-be burglars. OPERATION NIGHT LIGHT is a new crime abatement strategy designed to dissuade would-be criminals during the hours of darkness. Anyone can participate in OPERATION NIGHT LIGHT by simply turning on your porch light each day from dusk until dawn. Lights equipped with a photocell do this automatically. A lit porch light will brighten your property and “illuminate” the fact that residents on your street are part of an active Neighborhood Watch program. OPERATION NIGHT LIGHT gives criminals who operate under the cover of darkness what they don’t want ... well-lit areas and exposure. Cerritos Sheraton Hotel The Cerritos Sheraton Hotel will be undergoing renovations of it world class facilities from the lobby to guest rooms. The Cerritos City Council recently reviewed the hotel’s plans and were pleased. Some of the enhancements in the first phase of the project include new stone floors in the lobby, updated reception host stands, improvements to the ballrooms and meeting rooms, a new configuration in the hotel restaurant, and upgrades to the patio area. These improvements will ensure to keep this important facility up-to-date for guests and community members alike.
