The Cost of Clutter Full Definition of CLUTTER intra nsitive verb : t o r u n i n d i s o r d e r t ra nsitiv e v erb : t o f i l l o r c o v e r wi t h s c a t t e r e d o r disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness Yes, I know I started this article with a definition from Webster’s Dictionary, breaking the “cardinal rule” of writing. However, it’s important to remember what clutter is before I begin to describe its impact. Let me first say that I relate to this topic completely. If you have visited the Chamber office, you know that my desk is typically a disaster, with May’s desk a few steps up. Jill’s desk is virtually clutter free. I admire the precision and deliberate action it takes to be that organized. So, I wanted to find out why I’m a clutter-bug and what I can do to become better organized. An article in Fast Company magazine claims that clutter is ruining your life. Their list, and it’s a good one, makes some sense. The bottom line is that clutter kills productivity by stealing your focus, stressing you out, and leads to procrastination. The website Lifehacker.com claims that clutter impacts your brain. In the article “How Clutter Affects Your Brain (and What You Can Do About It)” points out a UCLA study of families showed that stress hormones spiked when mothers were dealing with belongings, or clutter. So there is actual, scientific evidence that clutter is stressing you out. There is a tangible cost to clutter as well. The Professional Organizers of Canada costs businesses over $650,000 a year. The Wall Street Journal pointed out that every lost piece of paper costs a business $120 and that 15% of all paper handled in a business is lost. Not only that, but 30% of all employees’ time is spent trying to find lost documents. The bottom line is that clutter costs your business time and money.

Okay, so your desk is a mess and you suffer from Clutter Syndrome, what do you do now? Rob Paul wrote a blog last year giving some steps to overcome paper clutter: 1. Discard unwanted mail and paper before it enters your home or office. 2. Remove yourself from junk mail lists and cancel subscriptions to magazines and catalogs that you do not read. Contact originators to be removed from lists. 3. Create an Inbox or tray for papers that need to be processed. 4. Create four file folders and label them with tasks you use most. Keep these file folders in plain sight for easy access. 5. In a timely manner, separate papers into the categories you made in #4 and process them according to the associated task.

These are all great ideas, but to remain uncluttered you have to be disciplined about adhering to a system. This process will take a great deal of time to become habit, and you will likely fall off track several times before you get into a rhythm. Don’t get discouraged, just keep trying. Remember, any amount of organization will likely help keep you on track, remain more organized, and stay productive.

Let’s Do Breakfast! at Polly’s Pies “Let’s Do Breakfast” was held at Polly’s Pies on September 13th. Chamber members were able to start their day with networking while enjoying delicious breakfast selections that included pancakes, French toast, waffles, and eggs along with their scrumptious, giant cinnamon rolls. Of course Polly’s Pies isn’t just for breakfast – they invite you to join them for lunch and dinner or just stop by to have a slice of pie or a whole pie to go. We would like to thank General Manager Ramon Ortega for graciously hosting this event.
