The Economy in an Election Year If you did not already know, this is an election year. This November, we will vote for a new President. Right now, both parties are still selecting candidates who have diverse and very different ideas for the future of our country. Have you ever wondered what happens to the economy in an election year? Actually, the economy acts in interesting ways every four years, depending on deeper issues impacting our country.

Looking at Wall Street during election year shows a mixed bag. An article in Market Watch shared that the S&P 500 showed an average return of 6.5 percent in election years compared with a 7.9 percent return over all years. The article also points out that the market tends to perform better when there is a Republican Congress rather than a mixed or Democrat Congress. Forbes calls the trading trends the Presidential Election Cycle and notes that in the year running up to the election, the Dow Jones Industrial Average shows the highest returns in the four-year cycle. According to the article, in years when a new president was to be elected, the market had a return of -5.6 percent. In fact, many of the years where a new president is elected were the worst periods of the four-year Presidential Election Cycle. Forbes notes that the third year of a president’s term tend to show the best market returns, mostly due to familiarity and certainty. Jobs tend to do well in an election year. The Wall Street Journal recently noted that only three election years since 1964 have shown a higher unemployment rate in November than in the following January. Perhaps the economy has more of an impact on determining who will be elected president than how the election process has on the economy. Political experts agree that a good economy benefits the party of the incumbent president. Results, in general, show that if the country is experiencing an economic recession, then the office of the president typically changes parties. However, if the national economy is expanding, then the party in power retains the presidency. How is the economy doing right now? It depends on who you ask. Low oil prices have led to some of the lowest gas prices seen in the past decade. The Federal Reserve has raised short-term interest rates and has plans to raise them in future. Unemployment is also at the lowest point since the recession began in 2008. However, U.S. workers have seen little in the way of pay increases with wages still mostly stagnant. The global economy is slowing, with China leading the headlines of those countries experiencing economic troubles. Some economists believe there is a chance that the U.S. could experience another recession, while others think there is only a slight chance. In fact, most experts expect the economy to expand around two percent, much like that past several years. What does this mean for this year’s presidential election? After all is said and done, experts seem to have thrown out all of the trends and analysis when looking at this election cycle. The candidates are unique and the electorate has changed so much it is difficult to predict any winners let alone final candidates. The only certainty is that a new president will be elected on November 8th.

Last week, the Chamber held its annual mid-year board retreat. This retreat always gives the board a chance to gauge how the Chamber is doing through the first-half of the year and reflect about the board’s role in guiding the Chamber. This got me to thinking about the role of your Chamber board. The characteristics of the Chamber board include the following:  Participation in the chamber events regularly, and is active in community and business outreach.  Engages in meeting other chamber members and nonmembers at luncheons and mixers in order to build spirit and Ronald Johnson cohesiveness within the chamber. 2015-2016  Demonstrates professionalism wherever a chamber event is Chamber President held.  Shares their talents and learned skills with others to build a chamber that has resourses and opportunities for all of its members. It is these characteristics and desire to be part of a Chamber that invests its time by networking and interacting with its members that make the Cerritos Regional Chamber such a special organization. In fact, this organization, which I really feel is more of a family than a Chamber, is constantly working to improve programs and events that truly benefit the membership.

2016

I am truly proud to serve as President of this great group and appreciate all the board, ambassadors, and staff do to fulfill our mission.

Inspired by Beatriz Cortez's time as the 2015 Art+Tech Artist-in-Residence, the exhibition 'Your Life Work' invites the viewer to imagine different possibilities for the present, and the future, through a series of speculative interventions into the past. The large-scale installation explores the way vocational education was conceived as part of a plan for population control that put into practice ideas about the predetermination of people's lives that were inherited from colonial times and then recycled into modern national discourse. The exhibition will run from March 1, 2016 through April 1, 2016. Visit www.cerritosgallery.com for more information about this exhibit.
