It did not prevent us from passing,” Wanda Johnston, Wayne County School Superintendent, said of the “target” classification. Not only did our schools receive passing “grades,” our school system also continued to exceed the state requirements for graduation rates. Tennessee’s standard requirement for graduation rates is 90%, but the Wayne County School System’s graduation rate is over 94%! Wanda Johnston expressed her feelings about the overall findings and the system’s performance with these words, “We’re very pleased with the results. We met the new goals, and we did it with the revised standards.”

Some Wayne Residents May Qualify For Tax Relief Under 2010 Disaster Designation It’s tax season again, and on January 14, 2010 the IRS began accepting taxes through their E-File system, expediting the entire tax return system. Remember, though, that there are certain groups who must wait to file. Those groups include people who itemize their deductions, those who claim the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction, and Taxpayers claiming the Educator Expense Deduction. For these groups, the 2010 filing season begins midFebruary. Whether you must wait to file or you may file now, there is help for those who were affected by the severe storms of 2010. Since Wayne County has been declared a disaster area a number of times throughout the year, there are some tax benefits that some Wayne Countians will qualify for under the disaster designation “Tennessee/ Severe Storms, Flooding, Straight-Line Winds and tornadoes.” Those who request tax relief according to this benefit should write that sentence at the top of their income tax return in red ink for faster processing, according to the IRS website. Individuals may deduct personal property losses that are not covered by insurance or other reimbursements, but they must first subtract $100 for each casualty event and then subtract ten percent of their adjusted gross income from their total casualty losses for the year. For details on figuring a casualty loss deduction, see IRS Publication 547,

Officials Encourage Cold Weather Safety There have already been at least four deaths associated with the freezing weather in Tennessee this year, according to authorities in Memphis and Nashville, and weather reports indicate that more snow could be on the way! Snow days may be fun for the children, but safety guidelines must be followed in order to enjoy the unpredictable winter season. Prepare for harsh winter conditions before those conditions actually strike. There seems to be a running joke about people rushing out to buy bread and milk before snowstorms in Tennessee, but buying adequate food is actually a good idea. It is also a good idea to make sure you have plenty of bottled water. Cat litter is also a recommended item, according to the U.S.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can be used for traction on walkways and driveways to prevent falls in icy conditions. Sand could also be purchased and stored for these occasions. Homes should be well insulated, and those who heat with wood burning fireplaces or stoves need to make sure the flue is clear. It should be inspected each and every year. Safety guidelines also recommend installing a carbon monoxide detector if a wood burning stove, fireplace, or kerosene heater is used in your home. Make sure your heaters are in good working order before cold weather arrives, and

if you have a gas tank, make sure it is filled before those cold winter nights hit. It is important to have a working heater in your home, but it is even more important to turn it on during extremely cold weather! Pipes freezing is a secondary concern when one stops to consider that hypothermia can kill young and old, alike. According to the CDC, hypothermia kills about 600 Americans each year, half of whom are 65 and older. The elderly are especially susceptible to extremely cold weather, since many of them are on medications and have a decreased ability to sense the dangerous change in temperature. Additionally, many elderly are more likely to avoid turning on heaters, even in extremely cold weather, because they cannot afford the higher electric bills that may come from running heaters. During cold spells, check on your elderly neighbors. If they are close enough, get out and

see them. Make sure they are staying warm in the cold weather, and make sure that they have taken proper precautions to prevent their pipes from freezing and possibly even busting. If you suspect hypothermia, take them to the hospital or call for help. Hypothermia can happen when a person’s normal

body temperature drops just a few degrees, from 98.6 degrees to 95.

In rooms with plumbing, leave the heat on low, even if nobody is in that room, to prevent pipes from freezing. It may also help to leave faucets on a slight drip during the coldest weather, since moving water does not freeze. Even a very tiny and slow drip is enough to keep water moving through cold pipes. Enjoy the winter weather by being prepared this season! Take care of your home, stock up, and check on elderly neighbors and friends to ensure that Wayne County stays safe as the cold winds and icy storms swirl about us.
