In Collinwood Area A joint investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Collinwood Police Department resulted in the arrests of two individuals linked to several thefts and burglaries in Wayne County and the Collinwood area. Lieutenant Donnie Carroll and Officer Shang Rippy led their departments in the successful investigation to solve the string of thefts. The cases solved include the shocking auto theft from Ralph’s Auto Sales within hours of its beloved owner’s passing. “The Collinwood community was passionate about solving all of these cases, but especially the theft at Ralph’s,” said Lt. Scam Involves Corporate Records Serv. The TN Secretary of State’s office reports that it has received inquiries about officiallooking notices sent from Corporate Records Service that arrived in mailboxes on Tuesday. The scam mailers are causing confusion for Tennessee corporations, which are required to file annual reports with the Secretary of State’s office; however, the Corporate Records Service is not registered, affiliated or associated with the TN Secretary of State. The CRS requests a $125 fee for filing, while the state’s standard fee for filing the annual corporation report is only $20. “We can confirm that Corporate Records

Service is not a business entity on file with out office,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “I strongly advise corporations to exercise caution before providing

their private and confidential information, including credit card information, to this or any company that is representing itself in this manner.”

and reached two-thirds of the process for abolishing the state death tax, which would be completely phased out by 2016. Rep. Dennis praised the legislature for its ability to pass several significant pieces of legislation, including worker’s compensation reform, pension reform for new hire state employees, allocated funding for education and additional funding for equipment upgrades at technical schools, crime legislation against gangs and increasing state reimbursement rates for inmates, and human trafficking laws. Rep. Dennis remarked that is was an overall successful year and believed the legislature made good decisions for the people of Tennessee. Voters should expect to see three amendments to

the state constitution on the ballot for next year, Rep. Dennis said. The first is an income tax ban, clarifying the current constitutional regulations regarding taxes. The ban will not, however, include the Hall income tax, which is allowed in the constitution by its own amendment. The second is an amendment to the process by which judicial selections are made to the state’s courts. The legislature has proposed a hybrid system that would have the Governor provide nominations and the legislature would confirm or deny the nominee. Rep. Dennis explained that changing the process to this type of system would provide better oversight for the appointment of judges. Third is an amendment regarding abortion, commonly known as Senate Joint Resolution 127 (SJR-127). The

amendment would clarify that the state constitution does not protect or secure a right to abortion or require the funding of an abortion. It would, however, allow for statutes to be enacted, amended or repealed to accommodate circumstances, such as rape or the life of the mother. The amendment is in response to a Tennessee Supreme Court ruling in 2000 that found the state constitution contains a stronger right to privacy and abortion than the U.S. Constitution and struck down restrictions placed on abortion in the state. After Rep. Dennis’ address, he opened the floor to questions or comments from the community. Steve Allbrooks, present representing Congressman Marsha Blackburn, thanked Rep. Dennis and the legislature for all of their hard work this year. He stated that Rep. Blackburn is in favor of SJR-127 and that it can only pass if a majority

of the Governor’s race voters cast a vote for the amendment. He emphasized the importance of voting not just for the candidates on the ballot, but for the ballot measures as well, stating that no vote was equal to a vote against the amendment. One community member raised concern about electric vehicles not paying gas taxes, but Rep. Dennis said the impact from the few electric vehicles was limited compared to the total traffic. A question was raised about whether the state could do anything about collecting online sales tax, but Rep. Dennis stated that the issue was in the hands of Congress to pass a bill and until then, the state was not able to do anything. A discussion about the Affordable Care Act also took place, and Dennis stated that only two insurance providers applied to take part in the federally-sponsored

exchange for Tennessee. He also stated that Governor Haslam is exploring the options for whether or not to expand TennCare in the state.

Card Of Thanks

We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who was so kind to us during the illness and at the death of our Mother. A special thanks to Deaconess Homecare and Tennessee Quality Hospice for their compassionate care and assistance at a time when Mom most needed their attention. Also thanks to Pete Turnbow for the touching service, and to Williams Chapel Church and Shawnettee Methodist Church for the delicious meals which they prepared for our family. We also thank everyone for the visits, calls, cards, food and especially your prayers. We truly appreciate the acts of sympathy and concern expressed on our behalf. God Bless You, The Family Of Betty Dodd June 26-(ojb)

Daddy, Remembering You Today And Always.

Jimmy Cleveland Skelton (June 17, 1941 - August 11, 2010)

You may have thought we didn’t see, Or that we hadn’t heard, Life lessons that you taught to us, But we got every word. Perhaps you thought we missed it all, And that we’d grow apart, But Dad, we picked up everything, It’s written on our heart. Without you, Dad, we wouldn’t be The women we are today; You built a strong foundation No one can take away. We’ve grown up with your values, And were very glad we did; So here’s to you, dear daddy From your forever grateful daughters.

We, the family of Sammy Newborn, would like to sincerely thank those who have supported us and cared for us in these months of Sammy’s sickness and at our time of loss. We are truly grateful for the friendship and love shown to us by family and friends through phone calls, cards, visits, food, flowers, and most of all prayers. Thank you to the U.S. Marines and the American Legion for the touching graveside military rights conclusion at the gravesite. Thank you to McGlamery FWB for the use of the fellowship hall and to Burns Chapel FWB for embracing and nurturing our family with a wonderful meal after the service. We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, And days before that too. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name. Now all we have is memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part. God has you in his keeping, We have you in our heart.

NOTICE

CITY OF WAYNESBORO WATER CUSTOMERS HYDRANT FLUSHING

The City of Waynesboro will be conducting part of its water system maintenance program by flushing fire hydrants during the week of July 8 to July 12, 2013. This activity is conducted semi-annually for the network, and is necessary for continued water quality and compliance with state and federal regulations. When flushing is taking place in your area, you may notice a reduction in water pressure, air in your household lines and possibly some dingy water as hydrant flushing will stir up sediment in main lines. If dingy, or milky water is noticed, it is recommended that you open your faucets and let the water run freely until it clears. It is also recommended that you do not wash clothes while the hydrant flushing activity is taking place. If you have any questions, please contact City Hall at 722-5458, or the Waynesboro Water System at 722-5593. Please drive carefully when approaching a flushing hydrant for the water flow across the roadway, and the Utility Personnel’s safety.

luggage, the group boarded a MercedesBenz motorcoach which would be their mode of travel for the next six days. Sedona was the first stop with Clay pointing out the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross adorning a cliff side above this bustling art colony. Quite a few sun hats were purchased at the boutique shops in preparation for the days ahead. This first night was spent in Flagstaff where an early bedtime was welcome after Tennessee sun-up departure and a time change of two hours. The south rim of the Grand Canyon had all the cameras clicking, and Billy & Jean Nolen recalling a previous visit to this site of the Bright Angel Lodge. Taking a short hike down the Bright Angel mule trail were Lynn & Janice Butler and, Jimmy & Betty McGee. Most VItoPs visited the Kolb Studio, home of

brothers who lived on the edge of the canyon. They photographed the spectacular views in all seasons which in turn enticed so many visitors to the Grand Canyon. Clay related history and geology of each place included on the tour; so much knowledge was gained about the forming of the various canyons by the Colorado River. Stops were made at Grandview and Desert View for additional vistas of this inspiring landscape. The afternoon was spent driving through Navajo country to Moab where the group spent two nights. Arches National Park is a work in progress as new arches are being formed and old ones destroyed, both by weather & erosion. Those who enjoyed walking, Bobbie & Doris Stults, Bobby Stephenson with his mom, Mildred, and Catherine Ross, Peoples Bank hostess, took the path between the North & South Window Arches enjoying the marvelous mild weather and scenery.

The “gossips” was an eye-catching formation and a stop was made at

the Fiery Furnace. That afternoon a visit was made to Canyonlands Park (island in the Sky) and an interesting stop at Dead Horse Point where Aaron & Shirley Stults & Michael Stults recognized this was the site of many familiar advertisements as well as the movie “Thelma & Louise”. The new Lone Ranger movie was also filmed t this park. After a buffet dinner that night, a cruise was included on the Colorado River accompanied by narration and lighting of the sandstone cliffs. Sunday was started with a short devotional and a visit to the John Wesley (Continued On Page Nine A)

Powell River History Museum with a film about the life of this man who first explored this region and successfully “ran” the Colorado River. Later in the morning, Mary Axakowsky, Dee Brown, Joyce Hankins, and Carolyn Hall were pleased when the coach stopped at a wall of Petroglyphs , drawings made by early Indian tribes of the area, still visible on the red cliffs. Capitol Reef featured formations that resembled castles and a soaring white dome, as well as horizontal rock that makes up the Waterpocket Fold created some 65 million years ago. Lunch was a fun time in a small village with a hamburger/ sandwich lunch in a Mom & Pop café that catered to the group with stories of the area. This is Mormon Country reflected in the well-tended homes and grounds. Clay took this opportunity to tell the history of the Mormons and their settlement of Utah. After leaving the valley and driving up over Boulder Mountain, a surprise of feathery snow had fallen and was clinging to the aspen and fir trees bringing out the cameras once again. The Anasazi State Park gave everyone insight into the early Indian tribes that populated these Canyonlands living first in pits dug into the ground. The next day was spent in Bryce National Park which was a favorite of John & Barbra Pillow, George & Carole Freeman and Sonny & Sue Robbins. The hoodoos—pillars of rock, of fantastic shape, left by erosion— appeared as almost human shapes gathered by the thousands into the natural amphitheater. Dottie Hutchinson, Paul & Paulette Crowell, and Charles & Pat Holder, Peoples Bank hostess, made a short “hike” around the rim of the Amphitheatre while Barbara Foley, Judy Williams, and Janet Mohead gathered at the rustic lodge for a cup of hot chocolate. That afternoon the motorcoach entered Zion National Park through a mile-long tunnel to be greeted by spectacular deep canyons

with a ribbon of green marking the Virgin River’s course. The overnight accommodations were in a picturesque inn framed with flourishing rose bushes. A trolley was available to take Larry & Sharon Bain and others to explore Springdale or enjoy their dinner alfresco that evening. The next morning the group was back in Zion, meaning “promised land”, because the flowing river brought an oasis habitable by early Indians and settlers. Wading out into the icy water tumbling over stones to stand on a huge boulder in the middle of the rushing water were Barbara Moore and Judy Durham while spouses Richard Moore and Jerry Durham elected to stay on dry ground. Clay pointed out the narrow canyon walls that forced hikers to sometimes wade the river to follow their trail. St. George is the home to the Brigham Young Winter Home and a lunch stop that allowed time to visit the Mormon Headquarters in that city. Late that afternoon the group arrived in Las Vegas for their final night on tour. Clay pointed out the fascinating hotels on the strip before the motorcoach arrived at the hotel, Treasure Island. Soon most of the group was back on the coach to spend the evening at the Fremont Street Experience, a pedestrian mall of music, eateries, and shops under a $17 million light canopy. The stage featuring an Elvis impersonator drew the biggest crowd but the zipline across the vaulted canopy was the focus of Linda Talbott and Cathy Latham. While their husbands, Mickey Talbott and George Latham, watched, they made the fast ride across the ceiling and had their picture made to prove this adventure. An entertaining and different laser light show was presented each hour accompanied by music to make a memorable grand finale for the Canyonlands tour. The flight home the next day was easy and uneventful so each traveler could just concentrate on the awesome scenery of the different canyons visited and all the history, geology and good fellowship gained during the week with Peoples Bank VItoP Club.

Left to right Michael, Shirley and Aaron Stults, Bobby and Mildred Stephenson, Sonny and Sue Robbins and Doris and Bobby Stults.

Music On Main Street Saturday In Lobelville

Whitney Duncan

Brinley Addington

Music on Main Street organizers are proud to announce that country music-singing Whitney Duncan, granddaughter of Beverly Murdock of Perry County, will be part of a special pre-Fourth of July concert in Lobelville, this Saturday, June 29. Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year. The talented 28-year old Ms. Duncan, from Scotts Hill, Tennessee, will open the 7:30 P.M. concert, and then afterwards meet-and-greet family and friends, and sign autographs. Also on the concert program is dynamic new up-ancoming country talent Brinley Addington. who is currently working on his new album, under the production of country star Chris Young, will close out the night with his band. This year, there are two weekends associated with the July Fourth holiday. “There are the two schools of thought as to what is Fourth of July weekend this year, with the actual July 4 date, falling on a Thursday,” explained Lobelville’s Cristal Odom. “So we determined that we’d have a special “PreFourth of July” edition of Music on Main Street this last weekend in June, to help folks prepare for their actual Fourth of July celebration the following week.” All of these summerlong, outdoor concerts alternate weekly between Linden and Lobelville, and are always free admission, and cans of delicious creamed corn will be given away. Patrons are asked to bring blankets or lawn chairs for optimum seating comfort. This Saturday’s Music on Main Street outdoor concert is “rain or shine”. In the event of any threatening weather, the concert will be moved indoors to Lobelville’s

Civic Center / Public Works Building. The Perry County Music on Main Street shows are shared with several middle Tennessee counties via a live radio broadcast each week, on Centerville’s WNKX FM, KIX 96. The success of these weekly concerts led to Lobelville and Perry County becoming the permanent home for the Tennessee State Finals of the prestigious national Texaco County Showdown. The 2013 State Finals are set for Oct. 12, in Lobelville, with host T. Graham Brown opening the show. The Music on Main Street Summer Saturday Nights Concert Series is sponsored by Buffalo River Review and coproduced jointly by Linden, Lobelville and Perry County. For more information, call 615-876-3400 or find Music on Main Street on Facebook.

Merry Heart By Max Franks My Place The Bible seems to know a lot about human nature: Psalms 49:11: “They think that their houses shall continue forever: they call their lands after their own names.” I don’t have anything to compare to “Trump Place” or “Rockefeller Holler” so I tried to impress my Boss with my personalized tag. I got one that read, “IM4GOD”. I strutted around awhile thinking I’d done well. Then I gave it a second opinion. I still had “I” first. I changed it to a humble version, “GODS4US”. A Religious fanatic wrapped up in himself makes a small package. Originality impresses me. A retired dentist

bought a farm and named it, “Tooth Acres”. Ouch! Ain’t that a gas! I’ve told yall about the little boy and his dog, but I want to hear it again myself. He said his dog’s name was Ben Hur. Someone complimented him on such a good name. He said, “Yeah, he used to be just plain old Ben, but he had puppies. Fame is a fleeting “thang”. But some folks

hate to go off and leave their vast empires. I heard about a man that wanted to be buried in his Cadillac. As they were lowering him into the ground, someone said, “Man, that’s really living!” We need to live our lives for Someone bigger that our little old selves. The Roses of local sawmill fame have a street named, “THE LORD’S

WAY”. That sounds plum Christian to me. They’re nice folks too. They’re planning to go “Where the ‘Roses’ Never Fade”. While driving North on

Highway 69, folks go by “The Lord’s Way” to get to Memory Gardens (A graveyard). Just saying......

Duren’s HealthMart Pharmacy Is Host Of Continuing Education Event

Leading the Fight Against Cancer Duren’s HealthMart Pharmacy hosted a free continuing education event and dinner at the Tin Roof Restaurant on Thursday, June 20th. The training was open to all pharmacy technicians in the surrounding area that work for independent community pharmacies. Pharmacist and owner of Duren’s HealtMart Pharmacy, Jerry Duren opened the event with an introduction and explanation of why he chose to bring the training to the area. He felt a need for technicians to understand the topic, have the program locally, and “because he truly appreciates what a pharmacy technician does and contributes” to the pharmacy. The training consisted of a program geared toward educating those in attendance about pharmacy audits. It was titled “Pharmacy Audits: What You Need to Know to Reduce the Chance of an Audit”. The speaker was Jennifer Baun, Director of Comprehensive Audit Prevention Services (CAPS). CAPS provides a comprehensive approach to independent pharmacy’s need for reliable assistance with third party audits and audit prevention training.

JAPANESE BEETLES Japanese beetles are out once again, and if they hit your fruit trees, roses, garden vegetables, grape vines, or anything else they take a liking to, serious damage can be done. The questions is, how do you stop the invasion? One of the most effective ways I’ve seen to control Japanese beetles is with the use of carbaryl, which is commonly known by its trademark name SEVIN. The liquid form can be mixed and sprayed on

plants that beetles are attacking, but like many other insecticides, SEVIN is toxic to honeybees, so try to avoid spraying it on flowering plants, and of course read and follow the label. Another method of control is a product called Milky Spore. Milky Spore is a bacterium that kills Japanese beetle grubs. This lawn-spread product kills the beetle while still in the grub form, which limits the number of adults that emerge from the ground. The problem is, adult beetles can fly in from other

The Wayne County News, Inc. - 4-H News & Farm Report lawns and still eat your plants. Its effectiveness is therefore increased when more neighbors use the product. A third product commonly used is a Japanese beetle trap. Depending on the type you purchase, it will either be scented with pheromones or a food source, and is highly attractive to beetles, but its effectiveness can be less than optimal. First off, not all beetles that are attracted to it will fly in it. That means you could be attracting more beetles to your property than you would’ve had without the trap. Without a doubt, one of the worst things you can do is place a trap near a susceptible plant thinking the trap will draw the beetles away from the plant. The traps should be placed used in open areas away from valuable plants, and their effectiveness,

much like the milky spore product, is greatly increased if more people in the neighborhood are using traps. The last option for beetle control is one that no one wants to hear, but it is still effective at times, and that is to hand collect beetles. The fact is, plants with fewer beetles attract fewer beetles. Now what do I mean by that?

According to University of Kentucky, when you remove beetles from a plant daily, only about half as many new beetles are attracted to the plant versus plants where no hand picking was done. If you do pick them, go out in the morning when the beetles are still sluggish and shake them off the plant into a pail of soapy water.

No, the teams and individuals did not actually walk across Tennessee, but they did exercise enough miles to walk across Tennessee about 23 times throughout the eight weeks. This is pretty impressive considering about half of the participants were between the ages of 50 and 70. Altogether the participants completed over 9800 miles! A celebration was held June 18 to celebrate their accomplishments. Teams enjoyed themselves as they ate a light dinner, participated in a cornhole tournament, and applauded those with outstanding participation. The winners are pictured.

First, they did mandatory screenings on all Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th grade students, and the wellness class at each high school. Screenings included height, weight, BMI (body mass index), and Blood Pressure. Tech students from Hohenwald conducted the screenings. Jeff mentioned it was surprising at how many elementary children they referred for high blood pressure. Second, between six and seven thousand dollars was spent to get new P.E. equipment. All schools now have an exercise room for the teachers to use. Third, money helped to fund the Back Pack Program in Waynesboro. Jeff was able to partner with some churches in Collinwood and they send 35 meals home each weekend.

Next year he plans to approach all churches and community groups to help and hopefully be able to provide weekend meals for all elementary schools. Jeff is applying for the Project Diabetes $150,000 3-year grant. Listed below is how he plans to spend the money over the next 3 years. • 1st year, start an afterschool program “Forever Fit” 4 days a week for 1.5 hours each day. The student will receive a workout plan that they choose. A certified P.E. teacher will work with them to help achieve their goal. It would be located at all 3 high schools, but open for middle school students also. They plan to put in a walking track at each high school. • 2nd year, buy new playground equipment for the elementary schools and continue “Forever Fit.” • 3rd year, purchase certified P.E. lesson plans for all P.E. teachers and continue “Forever Fit.” Jeff will know by July if he has been awarded the grant and will be able to start spending the money August 1st. Relay for Life Wonda Turnbo, Chair for Relay for Life presented to the group what Relay for Life is all about. She first mentioned that the money raised in Wayne County does not stay in the county, because the main focus of Relay for Life is research. If no money is raised for research then “No one wins.” She said there is a 1-800 number that people with cancer can call and they will help with things like wigs and gas cards. No amount of money is too small, so don’t think because you’re a small group you can’t help. She asked that the Health Council help in any way they can. Last year Wayne County raised over $60,000 dollars. Subcommittee Update * Dean asked the group for ideals that the health council can do to contribute to Relay for Life. * Cheryl mentioned that she attended the RHC meeting. She suggested they come up with ways to get more people and businesses involved. * Dean asked for approval to put the minutes in the paper to help get the word out about the health council. His nickname is “Wormy L” and he has four brothers: Danny Ray, Dexter Earl, Bobby Ray, and Randy Earl all of Clifton. In 1980, he was reassigned to Kadena, Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, where he became Non Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) of the Jet Engine Test Cell for J-57 Engines. In 1983, he was assigned to Altus, AFB, Oklahoma, where he worked as swing shift supervisor for Engine Conditioning – “flightline” – maintenance on the KC-135 Aircraft. In 1984, Sgt. Major accomplishments included leading the launch and recovery of the F-111F Aircraft which destroyed the oil pump house in Iraq and stopped the dumping of oil into the Persian Gulf. He also orchestrated the successful launch of the Guided Bomb Unit (GBU)-28: the largest smart bomb ever dropped from an aircraft. As Master Instructor for Jet Engine Mechanics, Terry initiated a program to use jet engine mechanic students to perform needed maintenance on operational engines instead of using a training engine, which resulted in a 100% engine spare line and 95% Quality Assurance pass rate. As NCOIC of the Jet Engine Test Cell,

They had held a practice fair during the month of January. This year’s fair was a huge success. The students did an awesome job. They had excellent posters, materials, and presentations. Each team of participants had to present their ideas to a panel of judges while

family members watched. All of the teams were of a high quality, which made judging them difficult. When the judges’ scores were tallied, the winners were: Third Place: Greta Brewer, Sydney Reaves, and Tyler Morgan with their extraction of strawberry DNA: There was a tie for 2nd place: - Second Place: Emily Dial, Zoiee Gobbell, and Ty Robertson with their presentation of the physics of motion and
