A Beautiful Day For C’wood’s 100th Birthday Celebration The City of Collinwood celebrated its 100th anniversary over the weekend, marking the event with a Centennial Celebration at Volunteer Park. Residents donned period dresses and outfits, harkening back to the early days of Collinwood’s history. The Centennial Celebration committee provided a 100th Birthday cake and also recognized 98 year-old Vera Harper, who was named Ms. Pioneer. Clifton Commission Holds Special Meetings The City of Clifton held two special meetings in May following the unusual events of the regular May meeting. The first special meeting was held on May 27, 2013 and included a public hearing on fluoride in the City’s water supply and discussion regarding the City Manager’s employment status. The second meeting was held on May 30, 2013 to authorize the closing of Main Street for the Smoke on the River BBQ Festival, as well as parking lot pavement project bids. The Clifton City Commission met for a special meeting on Monday, May 27, 2013. Following an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, Mayor Robert Culp called the meeting

to order. All members of the commission were present. The first item of business was a public hearing on the fluoridation of the City’s water system. Mayor Culp opened the floor for citizens to voice concerns or comments regarding fluoride. Several citizens stepped forward to advocate for the removal of it from the City’s system. Clifton’s Water Plant Director Kenneth Templeton stated that the decision to remove the fluoride treatment from the water supply was entirely up to the board, but that it could save the City a few thousand dollars in costs. After a brief discussion, the Board voted to proceed with the state regulations regarding the removal of fluoride from

the system. Next, the Board addressed the status of City Manager Mike McClanahan’s employment with the City, following the May regular session when the Board was accused by Police Chief Byron Skelton of violating its charter by entering into an employment agreement in the process of hiring McClanahan. Vice-Mayor Clyde Carroll reported that he spoke with City Attorney George Gray, who advised him and the commission that the employment agreement was valid and the commissioner was not in violation of the City’s charter. He stated that Gray advised that a state statute, outlined in McClanahan’s employment agreement, prohibited the removal of a City Manager during the first twelve months except in the case of malfeasance, misfeasance, or neglect of duty. Commissioner Tommy Boyd offered a motion to terminate McClanahan effective immediately, citing that he believed McClanahan had neglected his duties as City Manager. Mayor Culp seconded the motion, but it failed in

The Clifton City Commission met for it’s second special meeting on Monday, May 30. Following an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, Vice-Mayor Clyde Carroll called the meeting to order. Mayor Robert Culp and Commissioner Tommy Boyd were not present at the meeting. The first item of business was the review of parking lot pavement project bids. Commissioners received a list of bids from Manager McClanahan and Commissioner David Primm offered a motion to approve the lowest bidder, Doss Brothers, LLC of Lawrenceburg, for $57,500. Vice-Mayor Clyde Carroll seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Chet Rhodes, engineer of Rhodes Engineering, explained the plan for the project, which includes both pavement of the lot and drainage. The City hopes to begin the project in the next 60 days. Area Chef Discovers Bonnie Blue Farm And Goat Goodness!! From sack lunches to soufflés, Executive Chef Michael Grauer has come a long way in order to find his calling running a small restaurant in neighboring Linden. From private clubs to chain restaurants and hotels Grauer has learned the restaurant business from every angle. From server to bartender to chef... his new challenge is to “make his mark” by showcasing his signature style and getting back to his rural roots in Middle Tennessee. Grauer discovered an ad for Head Chef at the Commodore Hotel & Café in Linden. “I read the ad and thought, this could be good,” said Grauer. “I showed it to my wife, and she said, ‘You gotta go there.’” After meeting the owners Michael and Kathy Dumont, Grauer was impressed. Their dedication, commitment and tenacity in restoring and renewing a dilapidated, downtown landmark building, and in striving to make it a successful business were inspiring. “I wanted to be part of that,” says Grauer. “I wanted to share in a more intimate venue.” After 12 years in the business Grauer knows how to feed a crowd. Up to1,600 in one day, in fact. And feed them very well. From gourmet to country favorites, Grauer has a flair that made a recent customer remark, “from Maine to Spain, those are the best crab cakes I have ever tasted!” Grauer’s path started

with a heart attack. His father travelled a lot for his job, and his mother cared for Grauer and his four brothers and sisters. When Grauer was 12, “Mom had a heart attack, and survived, but was severely limited in what she could do,” says Grauer. “I was the second oldest (child). My older brother – to this day – can’t boil water, so I was in the kitchen, making sack lunches for my brothers and sisters.” Grauer was also cooking family dinners “with Mom’s coaching” when he was in junior high. When he entered the workforce, he was a server and bartender. Then he was hit with the cooking bug again when he watched chefs put dishes together with such ease and a deft touch that it left lasting impressions. “When I met Chef Jarod Hutto, it took off like a freight train,” says Grauer. “Hutto’s degrees in biology and culinary arts challenged my imagination and skills like never before. One day he came in the kitchen and threw a bag of marshmallows and some ahi tuna on the counter. The challenge was: how do they fit together in the same dish? I passed the test.” After only a few weeks in Linden, Grauer has transformed the Commodore’s menu and staff with an emphasis on superior service, value, and local ingredients. “I was looking for local ingredients, and was thrilled to find goat

cheese made nearby,” says Grauer. A big hit is his “Browned Bird” sandwich, made with Bonnie Blue Goat Cheese made right here in Wayne County. “This local cheese is superior,” says Grauer. “Local ingredients are fresher, and using them helps keep money local.” Grauer’s family has been local in Middle Tennessee since 1803. His distant cousin was actually Confederate General Benjamin Jefferson Hill, Commanding Officer of the 35th Tennessee, Warren County – McMinnville. General Hill was actually the last general to surrender in the Civil War. Commodore owner Kathy Dumont is wearing a bigger smile these days, since Grauer came on board. She says, “Stay tuned … We’ll keep restoring, renovating and improving here… we are dedicated to making it work in Linden. We strive to be an establishment the whole area can be proud of.” Just like Grauer’s cousin… and just like Commodore Perry and Major General Wayne … they are not quitters. The Commodore is named for Perry County’s namesake: Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who carried the flag “Don’t Give Up the Ship” in his victory over the British in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. Wayne County’s namesake, Major General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, was a military hero in the Revolutionary War. Commodore Hotel & Café, . www. commodorelinden.com . TOMATO CUTTINGS Most tomatoes are really growing now, but if you want to grow some more, either for fall production, because you want more of a specific variety, or for any other reason, you don’t have to buy more plants. You can use tomato cuttings. There are a couple of ways to start tomato plants with cuttings, but both start the same way. First take a sharp knife and cut a four to eight inch side stem off at the base where it attaches to the rest of the plant. If the plant has sucker vines, those are the best to remove, but any stem will do. After cutting, pluck off any leaves near the bottom of the stem. Now you can proceed in two different ways. The first option is to fill a small pot with potting soil, thoroughly wet it and stick a pencil down in the center to make a hole. Stick the cutting in the hole and pack the soil around it to remove any

air pockets. Put the pot out of direct sunlight or in a protected spot like a kitchen window (in direct sunlight, the plant will wither without roots). Keep the plant moist and after about a week, the plant will start to develop roots. After a few weeks, you can plant it outside in the garden or in a large container. The other option is one that I personally use because you don’t have to worry about the roots drying out and you can see the root development. Simply fill a soda or water bottle with water. Stick the cutting down in the water. A week or so later, the roots will pop out the stem. A couple of weeks later when the roots are larger, plant in potting soil and keep it moist for a few days so it adjusts to the soil. Both methods work fairly well, but each has flaws. First, the plants you start directly in potting soil must remain very moist until roots develop. Otherwise, they shrivel up

The Wayne County News, Inc. - 4-H News & Farm Report fairly quickly. Secondly, when I’ve taken cuttings from older plants that weren’t really growing, and stuck them in water bottles, I noticed some would fail to produce roots, and instead would just rot after about a week’s time. The cuttings from younger “growing” plants seem to do best. Some gardeners may have thought of a third option that I’ve left out, and that is using rooting powder to get plants started. Basically, it’s the same as starting a tomato cutting in potting soil, but before you plant the

cutting, you dip the stem into a rooting powder, which is supposed to help it develop roots. It is an option, but you have to check the label to see if it’s safe. Some rooting powders are only labeled for ornamental plants, not food-producing plants. Upcoming Events: For anyone interested in goat production, there will be a Master Goat Producer course in Jackson Tennessee on August 12-13. This is a two day course that is similar to the Master Beef Producer classes many of you have participated in.

NEWS Charlotte Smith EXTENSION AGENT UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE EXTENSION WATER SAFETY One of my favorite memories from childhood was summertime swimming with my family and friends. Swimming is fun and great exercise, but can be dangerous if children are not watched closely. Did you know drowning victims do not always look like they are drowning? Drowning can occur quickly and silently. Keep reading for information from the American Red Cross on signs of drowning. Know how to recognize an emergency. A distressed swimmer or drowning victim needs help immediately! A swimmer in distress

may still try to swim but makes little or no forward progress. If not helped, a swimmer in distress will soon become a drowning victim. An active drowning victim may be vertical in the water but unable to move forward or tread water. An active drowning victim may try to press down with the arms at the side in an instinctive attempt to keep the head above the water. A passive drowning victim is motionless and floating face down on the bottom or near the surface of the water. Do not assume that a swimmer in distress is joking or playing around. Know how to respond to an aquatic emergency. If someone is missing, check the water first. Reach or throw, don’t go. Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number. Enroll in Red Cross water safety, first aid and CPR courses to learn what to do. Insist that babysitters,

grandparents and others who care for children know these lifesaving skills. Have the right equipment. Have reaching and throwing equipment on hand, such as ring buoys or reaching poles, or even a water jug tied to a rope or a broom. Whenever boating or near water, even if you don’t expect to go in, always have U.S. Coast Guardapproved life jackets available. Life jackets should be the proper size for each individual and in good condition. Have cell phones or portable phones nearby to help ensure that you can quickly call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. Have a well-stocked first aid kit on hand. Ensure that you know how to use the equipment and that expiration dates have not passed. Understand the risks. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death for children ages 1 to 14 years. Drowning usually happens quickly and silently—many children who drown in home

pools were out of sight for less than 5 minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time. The place where drowning is likely to occur changes with age: Children under 1 year most often drown in bath tubs, buckets or toilets. Children ages 1 to 4 years most often drown in home pools. Older children most often drown in natural water settings. Maintain constant supervision. Maintain constant supervision of children whenever around water. Avoid distractions when supervising children around water. Have children or inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone—always maintain constant supervision! Block access to unguarded, nondesignated swimming areas. Alcohol and water do not mix. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination; affects swimming and diving skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.

The above picture was taken at the pinning ceremony. Pictured from left to right, Nathan age 14, Jennifer, Charlie, Charlee Ann age 17, and Bradley (Cody) age 16. Charles E. Krieger, Jr. was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army on April 1, 2013. His pinning ceremony took place on May 10 to which his parents and in-laws, were fortunate to attend at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Charlie, in the past few years has spent time as Operations Officer for a Brigade Support Battalion, Executive Officer of the Field Artillery Battalion and managed a unit budget of about 2.4 million with more than 100 vehicles and over $60 million worth of property. He

has commanded as many as 500 troops at a time. He is now Fire Support Officer for a Special Forces unit responsible for developing, training and managing Joint Tactical Air Controllers who provided field artillery, mortar, attack helicopters, Air Force, Navy and Marine fighter and bomber aircraft. tour. Since going active in the Army, Charlie and his family have lived in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma three different times, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Polk, Louisiana, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Fort Hood, Texas and have been, for the past four years, in Colorado Springs, Colorado at Fort Carson. On the same day of Charlie’s ceremony, family members were also fortunate enough to attend the Confirmation of their youngest grandson into the Catholic Church. They have previously traveled there to witness the confirmation of their other two grandchildren. On the way out, they decided to do a little site seeing so they took the southern route into Colorado via Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico where they witnessed an entirely different type of terrain and housing as always pictured in their minds (adobe type housing, no grass and plenty of mountains as Albuquerque is down in the valley. In Santa Fe, they toured the Loretto Chapel completed in 1878 which has a very inspiring story regarding the spiraling staircase with no visible means of support and without a single nail in it. Also no one knows who built the stairway or where they got the wood. (look it up online, very interesting story). From Santa Fe, they headed north to the Colorado line and into Pueblo where they turned east and visited the Royal Gorge which is over one thousand feet deep with rocky cliffs on each side and a river below as well as a bridge built on the same style as the Golden Gate. They commented, “We can definitely tell you from crossing it that it is a long way down to the bottom. From there, they traveled on into Colorado Springs to get ready for a very busy weekend and then back to Tennessee and Alabama on Tuesday. The picture, which was made at the pinning ceremony, is of the family of whom all are so proud. They now have a Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman in school. Jennifer is the daughter of Larry and Peggy Morris of Lawrenceburg, TN, Charlie in his new uniform, is the son of Charles and Sandra Krieger of St. Florian near Florence, AL, Their granddaughter is manager of the varsity football team and both boys play football and are well on their way to making Eagle Scouts. Merry Heart By Max Franks Horse Sense We’re living in a world filled with intelligent creations. We humanoids are supposed to be the sharpest because God made us above animals. We have the power to reason. I guess that’s the reason I’m writing this, otherwise I wouldn’t have a reason. We’re supposed to skillfully and deliberately use reason and logic in our everyday thinking and decision making. I’m talking “over my head”. What I’m trying to say is we need “common horse sense”. Horses are among the most intelligent animals. They can be trained to do amazing things. But they say the trainer needs to be smarter than the horse. I heard one

guy entered his mule in a horse show. “You don’t expect him to win, do you?” he was asked. “No, but he’ll be in some good company.” He replied. Horse sense is just “stable thinking” or common sense. Common sense is not so common anymore. They used to say, “He hasn’t got the sense God gave little green apples.” “Laughing stock” must be cattle with a sense of humor. I heard about a man who had a horse that could tree squirrels. His friend had to see this, so they went hunting, but found the horse sitting be a creek. The man said, “I forgot to tell you; he’d rather fish than hunt. But seriously, folks, here’s NOTICE In an attempt to title the following motorcycles, notify me if you have legal claim to ownership or liens. Call Mike Mitchell 931-722-5970. COMMUNITY EVENTS

WAYNE COUNTY BEER BOARD TO MET A special called meeting of the Wayne County Beer Board will be held on Monday, June 24, 2013 beginning at 5:30 P.M. at the Wayne County Clerk’s Office. June 12-19-(ojb)

Wayne County Family History Fair July 13th Who are you? Where did your family come from? These are just some of the questions that could be answered at the annual Wayne County Family History and Crafts Fair on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Wayne County High School. Wayne County Historian Bob Rains shared his insights about the fair recently. Q. Mr. Rains, what exactly is a family history fair? The fair is an opportunity for anyone that has information on their family history to share it with others who are looking for it. For example, I have information on the Ray, Melson, and Rains families of Wayne County, among others. I will bring it to the fair to share with others looking for those families. We encourage everyone with Wayne County roots to attend and bring what they have. You never know—something you think is well known about a family might be just what someone else has been searching for! Q. If I have information on my Wayne County family, what do I do next? Send me an email at rainsr@tds.net or call me at 931-722-5016 to reserve a table at the fair. It’s free! We will also need to know if you will need an electrical outlet for computers, etc. Q. Will I be able to get copies of information I find at the fair? Yes. We will have a copy machine available for a small fee per copy made. Q. How much is admission to the fair? We accept donations of any amount to cover the cost of having the event, but they are not required. Q. What else happens at a family history fair? Three of our Society board members will be offering free classes on Beginning Genealogy, Advanced Genealogy, and Cemeteries. Betty Peacock, David and Martha Montgomery are all experienced and wellresearched sources in these areas, and I am sure those attending will come away with something new they didn’t know already know. Q. Will the Historian’s Office in the Courthouse be open that day? Yes. We will have the office open from 9 a.m. to at least 1:00 p.m. Our History Office offers a wealth of information on Wayne County. We recently obtained the original school attendance lists, beginning in 1933. We also have received gifts of school yearbooks. We have just finished indexing the names in Wayne County Cemeteries in alphabetical order. This index will be available

in Tennessee through targeting and engaging community stakeholders to reinforce Tennessee’s

for research now and the day of the Fair. These are just a few of the things available for your research at the History Office. Q. What if we get hungry?? Our local non-profit organizations will be there to provide delicious homemade meals and goodies! More information is available by contacting Shirley Bailey, 931-724-4428. Q. What does the “crafts” part of the fair offer? In past years, we have had displays of everything from pottery, quilts, and jewelry to paintings. All items must be handmade. For those wishing to set up a display, contact Shirley Bailey, 931-7244428. Q. Do you have any parting thoughts for us concerning the fair? We will also have all of our Historical Society books for sale, including our newest project, which is called Wayne County War Between the States. We also have a pamphlet for sale that includes the histories of the three major areas of Wayne County and the effects of the War Between the States on those areas and the people written by Clovis “Hank” Brewer, John Templeton, and Betty Peacock. We really hope that everyone that wants to learn more about their Wayne County history will make plans to attend. If you need more information, please don’t hesitate to call us at the History Office, 931-7225016.

SUNRISE Available By David Coy

I was speaking to a group of people this past week about serving others as a way of getting our mind off of our own sorrows. We were speaking of the importance of being active. Not being busy for busy sake, but seeking out people who are struggling and need a helping hand or being aware of opportunities to help others. As we elaborated on the topic of being active we discussed the danger of having too much time to dwell on our current circumstance and how evenings were especially difficult. So here we are agreeing with the need for activity, focusing on serving others, now what do we do? So many it seems if the opportunity arose to help someone else, would flounder with ‘what do I say or do when I approach a person who is agonizing over an acute traumatic event that has just developed in their life?’ One of the most important first steps is to show up. You learn of someone who has just begun their journey with grief. They are in the depths of despair and agony of soul, it is important to be there more than the most eloquent of speech. Be available. It is amazing what a hug will provide. No words are necessary just wrap your arms around them in a gentle embrace that lets them know you care. If you do not show up

you can never give that hug. Being there also by itself is a powerful statement of ‘I care.’ Expect almost anything; mood swings, Insomnia, not eating or overeating, even use of language not characteristic of them normally. Then be prepared to listen. Allow them to tell you what has happened in their lives. Many of us need on this occasion to share with someone our loss; we are seeking someone who is willing to sympathize with our travail. Be available and be there. This is a simple recipe that requires no speech. sunrise@ sfdcares.com

Potential volunteers must attend both sessions on June 19th and June 26th from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. SHIP is a nationwide program funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Staff and volunteers are responsible for providing free and unbiased information to Medicare beneficiaries and their families. Volunteers will learn how to assist beneficiaries new to Medicare with the enrollment process. This includes helping beneficiaries understand the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in Medicare Part B if they are still currently employed and covered by group health insurance. In addition, volunteers will be trained to explain the different types of health insurance available to help pay the portion of a beneficiary’s health care costs that are not covered by Medicare. Volunteers will also be instructed how to screen and submit applications for “extra help” with Medicare premiums, deductibles and copays as well as how to perform annual Part D plan comparisons. The certification process consists of 2 full days of classroom instruction and an additional 6 hours of one-on-one training with a SHIP staff member. Call 1-877-801-0044 to sign up for the classes.
