Coastal’s Campus Safer than Surrounding Area For many Mariners, the grounds of College of Coastal Georgia are home. Besides the more than 400 By Drew C. Miller residential Editor in Chief students that live in College housing full-time when school is in session, the Brunswick campus - and the Camden Center to a certain extent - have increasingly become a place where students spend time outside of compulsory classroom sessions. From eating and sleeping to studying and lounging the College serves as a home away from home for many students. In the wake of heinous acts of violence committed on campuses across the nation, from the recent shooting at Florida State University and 14 other national predecessors, the need for a well-trained campus police force has never been more important. While Coastal Georgia’s enrollment is a far-cry from larger college institutions with tens of thousands of students, CCGA campus police do play an integral role within the campus community. “The Number one priority for us is keeping students safe,” said Bryan Sipe, Chief of Campus Police. “We do that by monitoring what crime is happening off campus and deterring that criminal activity from infiltrating the campus from the surrounding areas.” At Coastal Georgia, campus police are responsible for the safety of 3,000 students and 250 staff. Not only are the main Brunswick campus and Lakeside Village patrolled regularly, officers keep watch over the satellite Camden Campus in Kingsland and additional off-campus residential apartments. In Brunswick, the department’s goal is to have a minimum of two officers on duty 24-hours a day. In Camden, the site is patrolled mainly during normal operating hours. While there are elements of standard police work that occur on campus like traffic violations and accidents, Sipe said one of the overarching responsibilities of the department is to serve and educate students on a variety of campus safety issues. “It takes a certain kind of individual to be a campus police officer,” Sipe said. Pages designed by: Alvin Fernando

“We are trained to deal with crises of all sorts, however we have a broad range of duties that municipal police officers do not necessarily face day-to-day. “In this type of environment, we need to be able to flip the switch on how to react to given situations,” Sipe added. “This means we do not always play the role of the enforcer. We take on the role of educator in safety preparedness and provide students with ways to help prevent criminal activity.” Police work may get glorified in the media as being an action packed thrill ride, however there are real day-to-day procedures that the CCGA campus police spearhead; unlocking secured access areas, filing paperwork, giving directions to wandering visitors, or mediating on campus disputes. Additionally, the department responsible for emergency notifications which range from severe weather emergencies, fires and explosions, hazardous material incidents, power outages, floods, and criminal acts. The department utilizes multiple tools to warn students and employees of impending dangers including an outdoor mass notification speaker with one-mile radius. Other warning services utilize campus email and social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Sipe said the most useful warning service provided is the extremely convenient service Nixle, which sends text message notifications with important campus news to all registered for the service. According to a recent poll of 177 Coastal Georgia students (see Page 5), 64 percent believe the campus to be moderately to extremely safe. The Crow’s Nest also hit the campus pathways out to ask both residential and non-residential students about their thoughts on campus safety. “Honestly, if anything I feel too safe living in Lakeside Village,” said oncampus resident Jay Goodin. “Sometimes the rules seem a little too strict though.” Sophomore Mark Howard shares similar sentiments to Goodin, but provided more perspective, having both lived on- and offcampus as a student. “I feel safe living on campus, living in Brunswick, and living on St. Simons Island,” Howard said. “The location has not really made a difference. Brunswick is apparently the third most dangerous city in Georgia, but I wouldn't be able to tell.” As Howard noted, Brunswick and

Glynn County are not the sleepy coastal municipalities they once were. Even though there are just over 15,500 residents within the Brunswick city limits, the crimes reported in the 2012 Brunswick Police Department’s Uniform Crime Report accounted for 1.4 percent of all crime in Georgia, a state of nearly 10 million. The report also indicated that there were a grand total of 2,016 criminal offenses committed in Brunswick for that calendar year. More recently the website crimemapping.com, which maps data submitted by the Brunswick Police Department, showed that 168 crimes of all types were committed within the city limits from Nov. 1 through Dec. 2, 2014. In stark contrast, only seven non-violent crimes have been reported in the last three years on College’s Brunswick campus, which lies within the city limits. In short, CCGA pales in comparison to the crime

that occurs in Brunswick. Based on the statistical information provided to the public, CCGA has proven to be a safe haven in relation to the surrounding areas. Continue the dialogue on Twitter or other social media platforms, @ccga_crowsnest with the hashtag #campussafety. - In 2012, crime in Brunswick made up 1.4% of all crime in Georgia. - CCGA has a total of seven non-violent crimes from 2011-2014. All were burglaries on campus; five were in residential facilities. - For 2013, Campus Police reported 19 liquor law violations, six drug abuse violations, and one illegal weapons possession in the residential facilities. -From 2011-13, 3 illegal weapons possessions were documented on campus outside of the residence halls. All instances were handled via CCGA judicial review.

Data collected by www.crimemapping.com shows the 168 crimes reported from Nov. 1 - Dec. 2 by the Brunswick Police Department. The College of Coastal Georgia’s Campus indicated by the red circle has significantly lower crime-rates than the surrounding areas.

What’s all the Yak About? By Alaric Shearer Staff Writer

Something has been causing a lot of commotion on campus and it is not the impending winter break. The smart phone application Yik Yak has been gaining popularity on college campuses nationally. Similar to the app “Whisper,” Yik Yak was created with the intent of allowing others to share their thoughts anonymously on a virtual bulletin board. Tyler Droll, the founder and CEO of Yik Yak describes the website as “a city’s central plaza or a campus bulletin board. A “yakker” told the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Daily Cardinal student newspaper that Yik Yak was "the virtual version of bathroom graffiti." The app is a way for people to reach out to others without worrying about what others may think. With the ability to remain incognito, students have been using the application for various reasons. Some of these reasons are valid while others are questionable. “Yik Yak was created for college students to post about what is happening

on campus with events, professors and other exciting news,” says Area Coordinator for Residence Life, Tiffany Curry. Within the College of Coastal Georgia’s campus, Yik Yak has announced campus happenings such as the opening of the Anchor and has served as soapbox podium for comedian Mariners. However, “some students are using Yik Yak for things it wasn’t intended for like late night fraternizing or publicly humiliating fellow students” Curry added. Coastal College of Georgia Sophomore Larry Burton expressed that Yik Yak is "a way for people to bully each other because of how anonymous the app is." Recently, a Florida State University alum used the app to send vague warnings of his attempt to shoot up the college. Because of the anonymous nature of the application, it was hard to determine the validity of these statements. Said student unfortunately carried out his plans resulting in the wounding of three FSU students. Yik Yak, like other social media apps, has been used for recent criminal acts because students believe that it cannot

Here are the top Yaks posted by Mariner users. Look for the Yak segment to continue in future prints. You never know if your Yak will be featured in our next issue! be traced back to them after they send it anonymously. Despite the anonymous nature of the application, authorities have their own ways of tracing who said what. Curry said, “If you are on college internet then the IP used can be traced back to you. So in reality it is not truly an anonymous way to post." Many students even ignore the app all together. Freshman Howie Elkins, is one of these students. “People are weak and are not brave enough to say what they feel in person so they have to use Yik Yak for this purpose to humiliate others,” Elkins said. To Elkins, Yik Yak is a perfect example of cyber-bullying in practice. Many social media sites and College Campuses take cyber bullying seriously. The consequences of cyber-bullying can be expulsion from college and even possible jail time. Like any other form of social media, Yik Yak can be used for either positive or negative commentary. It is up to “yakkers” to create what kind of platform they want to communicate on and what content is appropriate for the community. Remember; garbage in, garbage out.

Mariner Volleyball Heads to Iowa!

By C. Garrett Dutton Sports Editor

The intensity in the Howard Coffin gym on Nov. 22 was something this school had never seen before. The College of Coastal Georgia women’s volleyball team (35-1) hosted Embry-Riddle for the 2014 NAIA National Volleyball Championship in an opening round match. Embry-Riddle was the only team to defeat the Mariners during the regular season. The Mariners gathered the momentum and energy from an estimated crowd of 578 students and supporters as they coasted to a 3-1 victory, which came by the scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, and 25-18. With the

win, the Mariners continued their run in the national tournament. In the match, junior Emma Anderson led the team with 22 kills, sophomore Rachel Amundson pitched in with 14, and junior Kara Neisen counted for 12. In total, the Mariners had 63 kills out of 136 attempts which produced an average of .353. SSAC Player of the Year, sophomore Cayley Meiners was able to rack up 57 assists in the match and she continued to show why she deserved the prestegious award. Neisen also contributed 14 digs, followed by freshman Jennifer Johnson who had 11. After the dramatic home victory, (CCGA’s first nationally hosted event), the Mariners packed their bags and traveled

a long 22 hours to the final site of the NAIA National Championship, in Sioux City, Iowa. This location is where the final 24 teams will attempt to earn the title of becoming national champions. On December 2, the Mariners opened Pool D play against Biola California at the Tyson Events Center in the first of their three matches in Pool D. Once pool play completes, the top two teams from all six pools move on to the single-eliminat portion of the tournament beginning on December 5. The Mariners went on to lose to Biola in their first pool play match on Dec. 2. Despite the efforts of school spirit, by televising the game in the Stembler Theatre, Coastal suffered a 3-0 defeat. Losing 25-14

in the first set, 26-24 in the second, and 2513 in the final set. Neisen led the team with 10 kills, followed by Anderson with nine, and Amundson with six. Meanwhile Biola (Calif.) accounted for 51 kills and totaled 50 digs as a team. With two matches left in pool play as of deadline, the Mariners hope to regain composure and gain momentum in order to obtain one of the two remaining slots and enter the 12-team elimination round. The Anchor is grounded By Kara Neisen Stephen Rowell, a senior Marketing Web Editor major, did not know what to expect

when walking through the doors of the Anchor on opening night. He envisioned a similar look to Buffalo Wild Wings. Rowell’s reaction said it all as he was surprised to see a grab-and-go food service bar, fully equipped with lounge chairs, booths, and six flat screen TVs. “My first reaction was “wow,” it has the feel of the Lighthouse bookstore with a cafe style feel,” he expressed. “I can only hope students will utilize it.” As more people filed into the newly renovated space, people were shocked to see the transformation from previous facility, the ‘Wherehouse’. The Student Activity Center has undergone quite an eye appealing facelift. With the opening of The Veteran’s Lounge and newly revamped Recreation and Entertainment Center, the Anchor is one more welcome addition to campus. Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Jason Umfress, has great expectations for the SAC building as his plans were set into action. “Over the last year, the Student Activity Center has transformed from a nondescript building to a place that is quickly becoming the hub of campus,” Dr. Umfress said. Umfress adds “What was missing was a food option in the building. It is our hope that adding the Anchor will be an additional draw to the SAC and will provide another place for casual student interaction. We want the students to take ownership of it as a place to get a bite to eat, hang out, and watch a little TV.” Phyllis Broadwell, Director of Human Resources and Auxiliary Services also has high hopes for the newly opened Anchor. “We hope the Anchor will be a place where students come to meet and begin to create traditions,” she stated. Dr. Umfress has a similar outlook for the future of the Anchor. He said “I'm excited about the buzz it will bring to the SAC. I cannot wait to walk in the door, see all six TVs going, every table full of students socializing, and

the food service selling out every night. I would love for the Anchor to become THE on campus hang out.” How is the Anchor really different from Dockside Deli located in the Andrews Building? The Anchor will consist of Outtakes which are also sold in Dockside for a grab-and-go order. These Outtakes will offer pre-made sandwiches, wraps, salads, fruit cups, Sushi Bob boxes, cookies, brownies, chips, candy, ice cream, bottled beverages. Similar food to Dockside will be sold, as Phyllis Broadwell announces “it’s going to be a different feel and flare, we hope because the nature of the furniture is a lot more lounge style.” Not only will the Anchor provide a cool place to hang out, but the hours are designed to accommodate all students. Seating can accommodate large or small groups, making it an ideal meeting location for class project work, board/card games, or casual conversation. The goal is to start the hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. These hours are subject to change based on student feedback. The goal of the Anchor is to promote social engagement on campus and is designed for the entire student body. Students have asked for additions or an expansion to

the SAC, and The Anchor meets both requests. It is up to Mariner’s to utilize this space and support the food options. If you already have yet to check out the Anchor, you are strongly encouraged to visit as the facility ultimately serves as another place for Mariners to lounge and study. Invite your friends to play a game of spoons, watch a football game, or grab a snack with your BFF. If you or anyone else has suggestions or feedback on the Anchor, contact Phyllis Broadwell at pbroadwell@ ccga.edu.

A Fisherman’s 6 days of christmas

By Carter Lyles Crow’s Nest Contributor Do not get stuck on Christmas morning with the same pair of slippers your Grandma has annually bought you! You’ll need to make an effort to drop some hints so you can get what you want. But, what if you have no idea what you want? That’s why I’m here. Behold! A Fisherman’s 6 Days of Christmas! Day 1 HooRag ($15.95) Skin cancer is a scary thing to be diagnosed with; however, we have ways to prevent that from ever happening. HooRag is a buff company that comes out with the sickest designs by far of any buff company I know of. Each HooRag is designed to be UPF 20/30. This is a picture of their most popular design (given to the Navy Seal Teams). Day 2 Montana Fly Company Iphone Case ($30) Built like a brick to protect your Iphone, this is a great gift that is under $30. There are a ton of awesome designs, but the one shown is my favorite. Don’t blame me if an osprey steals your phone! Day 3 Gerber Suspension™ Multi-Plier® ($39) Every fisherman has to be equipped with a strong set of pliers. I have not come across a better set of pliers for the price than Gerber Suspension Pliers. It also comes equipped with ten other locking tools. Day 4 Patagonia Men’s Long Sleeve Graphic Fish Tee ($49) This style of fishing shirt has quickly replaced the PFG as the best on-the-water shirt to have. They are lighter (100% polyester), much more comfortable, cooler, and come with some dirty graphics. Thus far, Patagonia’s Long Sleeve Graphic Fish Tee has been a favorite of not only me but also many fishing guides across the nation. Day 5 Shimano Terez TC4 Saltwater Rod ($100 and over) This rod won the top saltwater rod of the year at this year’s 2014 ICAST Showcase in Orlando. It is the first ever-fishing rod that has been built to fish PowerPro. It’s incredibly light, has an awesome grip and a ton of power in its butt section for putting the heat on a fish. Day 6 Smithoptics Chromapop Sunglasses ($209) Long gone are the days of Costa Del Mar sunglasses for me. They are cheaply made for what you get. In the year of 2013 I went through five pairs of Costas and was suddenly turned onto Chromapops. These glasses block specific color wave intersections as they pass through the lens, eliminating color confusion so your brain recognizes true color, faster (perfect for fishing). And for being as clumsy as I am, mine are still like brand new after an entire year.

Top Passive-Agressive Gifts... I Guess The holiday season is filled with an influx of food, cheer, and giving, right? While some may be inclined to give from the heart, others may opt to give from a darker side. Here at The Crow’s Nest we are all about practical giving as a way of problem solving. Maybe you have a friend, sibling or roommate who simply cannot take a hint. Well now you can buy them a hint and get credit for spreading holiday cheer, even if it is self-serving. Below we have provided a few probable recipients on your list and the best way to alleviate the headaches they cause. Hopefully you will get the most out of the capitalistic machine that envelops and ultimately steers the holiday season.

What better way to reciprocate their thoughtfulness (or lack thereof), than gifting two concert tickets from a show you already attended? “...Golly. That show was great, wasn’t it!? Oh yeah, that’s right you weren’t there.”

The Person: The Superficial Self-Made Social Media Celebrity The Gift: Mega-Star package from Celeb4ADay.com Having a crew of paparazzi hound them mercilessly for a few hours will only help them realize how mundane their life really is. You are not the only one in the world that indulges in skinny peppermint mocha frapuccinos and what you had for brunch really is not that insta-worthy. Contrary to what you believe, your chevron, monogrammed, pastel scarf is not that interesting. You’re basic; just like the rest of us. Enough with the redundant posts.

The Person: The Conspiracy Theorist The Gift: Industrial roll of tin-foil Admit it, there is no de-bunking their proofs. If your friend’s YouTube search history includes: “Illuminati,” “dinosaurs built the pyramids,” “Pro wrestling IS real” or “moon is hologram,” they have reached an abysmal depth down the rabbit hole. Do the right thing: provide your buddy with mass quantities of the only product that can stop the reptilian overlord government from hacking their brain via satellite; copious amounts of tinfoil. From creating helmets to lining the inside of their humble abodes, your friend will cherish you forever.

The Person: The Flake The Gift: Two used concert tickets Nothing bugs you more than that friend that says they are going to meet up, but ends up leaving you loitering late-night at Waffle House by your lonesome.

The Person: The Aspiring Fashion Designer (with no fashion sense) The Gift: A mirror Just because you have an account on Pinterest and follow Kendall Jenner on Instagram does not automatically make

The Person: The One-Upper The Gift: A bag of chips You never see what you are going to get when dealing with puffed up snacks from your local Friendly Express. These vacuum sealed lies are typically 50 percent air, just like the one-upper’s personality. With such a gift, now your “friend” can finally proclaim that they are indeed, all that and a bag of chips.

you the next Vera Wang. You need not spend your student loans on airfare for holiday shopping in Paris or Manhattan. This is betting against all odds. Try the easiest route instead; by grabbing your friend by the shoulders and placing them in front of a mirror in a well lit room. Your moral support could possibly be the reason they switch majors to something more appropriate such as accounting. The Person: The Smelly, Broke, Messy, Immobile Roommate The Gift: Job applications “Look! You are so qualified for each and all of these jobs. Oh…and rent is due on the first buddy-ole-pal!” Roommates come in all shapes and sizes. All bring their own set of unique problems and personality flaws to your shared domicile. Job apps will hopefully motivate them into cleaning up their act (and the apartment) while helping them evolve their wardrobe from “sweatpants without pockets” to “business casual.”

Title Ix November 20 was the Sexual Misconduct Awareness Event in the Stembler Theater. This event was put together by students in Dr. Orsolya Kolozsvari’s Sociology 1101 class, with the help of Coordinator of Diversity and Inclusion, Floyd Phoenix. The presentation offered information on Title IX. Title IX, passed by Congress in 1972, the law states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the Title IX regulation describes the conduct that violates Title IX. Examples of the types of discrimination that are covered under Title IX include sexual harassment, the failure to provide equal opportunity in athletics, and discrimination based on pregnancy. To enforce Title IX, the U.S. Department of Education maintains an Office for Civil Rights, with headquarters in Washington, DC and 12 offices across the United States. This event featured speakers from within the community. The Assistant Director of Service Learning, Cody Cocchi, spoke of the project and the purpose of service-learning. A video was presented that detailed types of Title IX violations and things students can do to stop harassment. There was a panel of speakers to answer questions from the audience, which included students and community memebers. The panel included were Assistant Pages designed by: Alvin Fernando

District Attorney for Sexual Crimes Against Women, Katie Gropper; Dr. Marci Culley, Assistant Professor of Psychology; Georgia Commissioner on Family Violence, Valerie Williams; Glynn County Chief of Police, Matt Doering; Debate & Mock Trial Club President, Deshawn Jamison; and the Chairman of Georgia Commission on Family Violence and Judge of Glynn County Superior Court, Stephen Kelly. Phoenix supervised the presentation providing information and tips on how to handle sexual misconduct. Sexual assault refers to nonconsensual sexual intercourse or sexual contact Phoenix said afterward. “Sexual assault perpetrated by a College of Coastal Georgia Community student outside the College Community is a violation of the College’s Student Code of Conduct,” Phoenix said. “If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, the first priority is to get to a safe location. Following a sexual assault, contact either the campus police department or your local police department,” he conintued. “Contacting the police does not commit or obligate the survivor to having the assault investigated. The survivor can make that choice later. The survivor will not be judged by the police or receive negative opinions. Also medical care is strongly recommended” Many believe that Title IX applies only to athletics, however this is only one of 10 key areas addressed by the law. The other areas are; Access to

Higher Education, Career Education, Education for Pregnant and Parenting Students, Employment, Learning Environment, Math and Science, Sexual Harassment, Standardized Testing and Technology. By law, every college and university must be in compliance with Title IX. Title IX governs the overall equity of treatment and opportunity in athletics while giving schools the flexibility to choose sports based on student body interest, geographic influence, budget restraints, and

gender ratio. In other words, it is not a matter of women being able to participate in wrestling or that exactly the same amount of money is spent per women's and men's basketball player. Instead, the focus is on the necessity for women to have equal opportunities as men on a whole, not on an individual basis. College Football Playoffs are Here By C. Garrett Dutton Sports Editor College football teams have bashed into each other as usual during the regular season. Once the slogging is over and the conference championship games have reached the final whistle, the College Football Playoff Selection Committe will meet on Dec. 7. The committee will release its final Top 25 rankings and the top four teams will make the National Semifinals. Based on the final standings, No. 1 win face No. 4 in the Sugar Bowl and No. 2 playing the No. 3 seed in the Rose Bowl. The winners will advance to the National Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This “selection committee” consists of members such as: Pat Haden, Director of Athletics at the University of Southern California, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and 10 others. What gives these people the right to make this ultimate decision? The college football playoff section committee’s official website claims the committee is, “a talented group of high-

integrity individuals with experience as coaches, student-athletes, collegiate administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors, comprise the selection committee.” This issue and many more have been debated on for some time now, but the fact is a college football playoff is a reality. Though I have issues with how the committee was chosen, as well as others, as a fan I can’t complain about the two extra football games everyone will get to enjoy this holiday season. Before the “experts” put out their final poll, to decide who will get the chance, my predictions for the top four teams to enter the playoff is based of knowledge and statistics before conference tournaments. At No. 1, you guessed it, is the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide are 11-1 after the regular season and are headed into to the SEC Championship game against University of Missouri, where I expect the Tide to roll. At No. 2 on my list, The University

of Oregon. While the Pac-12 conference is not considered as tough as the SEC or other conferences, one cannot look past an 11-1 record as the Ducks have dominated the conference. The Ducks face off against No. 7 Arizona in the Pac-12 Championship Game. While I expect The Ducks to win, Arizona is the only team to hand The Ducks a loss early in the season 31-24. No. 3 and No. 4 are two slots that I view as wide open. 10-1 Texas Christian University (TCU) are clearly in the debate for the No. 3 spot, even though toughness of schedule could potentially hold them back. As for the fourth and final seed, I anticipate that the University of Florida State will lose their ACC Championship game against Georgia Tech, and while I would love to see a 11-2 Georgia Tech filling the fourth seed, I believe if the Seminoles do lose to Tech, 11-1 Ohio State will finish out the top four teams to compete in the first college football playoffs.
