Urban Gaming Club By: Lexi Dybe Urban Gaming Club is an organization where students enjoy outdoor activities while meeting new people. It is a new twist to gaming all together. It mixes what people consider “nerdy” with athletic abilities. From Nerf gun battles to zombies, Urban Gaming has it something for everyone. Urban Gaming Club is place where students can be themselves while having fun and getting a nice exercise. Not only that but it helps with building social communion through interesting events. It is an environment where the athletes can get to know people they would not have met before, and many others. It is a way for students to branch out and learn that exercising is not just about pushups and burpees. That it can be in interesting ways such as nerf gun fights, man hunt, and more. It is a place for anyone serious to quirky. If any students ever wish to join this club they could by talking to Robin Womack (the president), Erik Glaubman (the vice president), or Sean Lamberd (the secretary) at any point and time that they are on campus. If information is key before joining a club, then a meeting should be attended. They have meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 5 pm. They have this meeting on the second floor lounge of the Campus Center, they are always accepting of new members or those curious about their club. Halloween is coming up, and Urban Gaming has the perfect event. What says Halloween better than zombies? Practically nothing. On Halloween day Urban Gaming is hosting Human Versus Zombies (called HVZ around the campus). If you wish to join in the perfect preparation in case the zombie apocalypse happens, sign up is next week, and they will even have an area during Mariner Fest (the 22nd). Just put down your John Hancock and watch out for the zombies around campus. As Sean Lamberd says “Urban Gaming Club is a good community to meet new people, and have a lot of fun.” And that it is, Urban Gaming Club is a place where students mix, mingle, and become friends. So grab the nerf guns and go hunt friends!

Local news

October has been an event filled month, it even started with a unique and fun twist. A masquerade ball, hosted by Peacock Productions for the One Hundred Miles Organization. Everyone was dressed in their best, masks making everyone as mysterious as ever. Gowns were flowing with each step of those coming to support the coast, suits fitting snuggly of the men treating their lady to a formal and entertaining time. The ball had plenty of fun, food, prizes by raffle, and contests. Cinco De Mayo catered the food, and made sure everyone had enough to fill their appetite, with drinks of perfect complimentary. The DJ playing grooves to get everyone in the dancing mood. Sponsors donated wonderful products and activities to be raffled off to help One Hundred Miles’ goal. Then to top it off they had “Who has the best mask and gown” contest. Everyone had a chance to flaunt their beauty and show what a fun time they were having! The ball was hosted to help One Hundred Miles protect Georgia’s coast. However, as a surprise it was not hosted by One Hundred Miles. It was hosted by Peacock

Ball of a Time Productions, wishing for One Hundred Miles to be the benefitting organization. As Megan Desrosiers, the executive director of One Hundred Miles, says: “The cool thing about the event is that [One Hundred Miles] didn’t put it on. Two volunteers donated their time and energy to plan and execute the event. It was their idea and they chose One Hundred Miles as the benefitting organization.” Peacock Productions decorated, gained the sponsors, and even did the photography for the event! Overall they did a wondrous job of planning and hosting the ball.

One Hundred Miles is an organization about protecting Georgia’s coast. Their mission is to have thriving communities, protected landscapes, and to secure wildlife. They wish for groups and individuals to work together to help protect the coast. They have already made quite the impact; in just under two years’ time One Hundred Miles made great strides towards becoming the trusted leader and advocate for Georgia’s coast. They are willing to protect and save our coast and keep it beautiful.

October | 11

The ball is not the first nor last event that One Hundred Miles have hosted or been in. They have many opportunities coming up that are both fun and for a good cause. They are hosting trivia night at Tipsy McSway’s October 27th, at 7 pm. Come early to get a seat or reserve a table by calling Tipsy’s at (912)2679991. There will be a donation box out front, it is not mandatory to donate, however it is suggested to help One Hundred Miles. If you are not into trivia, then remember that the holidays are coming and One Hundred Miles are hosting their 2nd annual Holiday Market, it is online every day from November 15th to January 5th. Help the coast and your gift-list by buying locally made art, craft, and products. 40% of all profit goes towards One Hundred Miles. One Hundred Miles are having plenty of events and voluntary work. It is a way to connect with the community and environment. One Hundred Miles are a community-friendly organization wishing to help and be helped. Anytime there is an event, they are always willing to make it fun and unique. By: Lexi Dybe

Tryna’ Get Brig? Students of CCGA, are you interested in taking your physical abilities to the next level? We here at the crow’s nest recommend you come check out The Brig and everything it has to offer! The Brig is the functional fitness room located on the left side of the SAC, straight down the hallway past the bathrooms and conference rooms. At CCGA we are dedicated to helping our students get into the best shape of their life. We have many different pieces of equipment that are easy to use and can help you grow physically. The center features a multi-function rack, with a heavy bag, battle rope, infinity rope plus TRX capabilities as well as kettle bells, core bags, agility ladders, rowing machines, tires, plyometric boxes, a 50-foot turf strip and more. Functional fitness isn’t just about seeing results. It’s about conditioning your body to function correctly during day-to-day activities. Traditional “weightlifting” exercises generally target only one muscle for each exercise. Functional training exercise generally targets more than one body part with each movement or exercise. As you add more functional exercises to your workout, you should see improvements in your ability to perform your everyday activities. Many of functional fitness activities focus on your core and abdomen, and strengthening these muscles will do wonders for your balance. That can be the difference between pulling a tendon when you slip down the stairs or catching yourself before you fall.

BRIG

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to help you do everyday activities safely and efficiently. It will help prepare your body when life becomes unpredictable. The exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by doing common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. Functional fitness exercises can make everyday activities easier and help reduce the possibilities of an injury. “The Brig offers students an exciting, different approach for achieving their desired physique. It can be utilized by students ranging from all fitness levels; the equipment can be used for students to train at their own pace” says certified trainer Colt Brockington. Moving from normal gym machine exercises to functional fitness exercises can be a shock to your body, those functional exercises can be a lot harder! If you haven’t been incorporating functional fitness exercises into your routine, now’s the time to start. Mixing up your fitness routine with versatile functional fitness exercises not only prevents plateauing but will also condition your body. If you are looking for an extra pump after hitting the fitness center, The Brig is the place to be! If you don’t want to check out The Brig alone, grab a friend and bring them with you, we insist! The Mariner Rec has an amazing staff who is always willing to lend a helping hand to anybody at any time. The Brig is a fun environment to be in and is a productive way to spend your time on campus.
