All participants receive a Shamrock Run 5K T-shirt with registration, which is $25-$35. All proceeds benefit the mission of the March of Dimes to improve the health of babies.

President Aloia announces retirement as ccga president C

ollege of Coastal Georgia announced in mid-January 2017 that President Aloia would retire June 30th, 2017. President Aloia began working for the College back in 2013 and has tremendously transformed the school in hopes to bring in more activities, facilities and an entirely new perspective that the College now embraces.

enrollment has grown an amazing 18 percent from fall 2013 to fall 2016, the highest peak in enrollment numbers the school has ever seen. For fall 2016, there were 3,529 students enrolled making it a 12.7 percent increase from the previous year—a dramatic percentage increase compared to the other 29 institutions in the University System of Georgia.

P

resident Aloia stated in a recent press release that, “It has been my honor to serve as president of the College of Coastal Georgia. The efforts of our leadership team, the faculty and staff, to create a high quality learning environment for current and future students has been remarkable. With the continued support of our community, the College of Coastal Georgia has a bright future ahead. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this institution’s growth and advancement.”

A

P

N

resident Aloia is the College’s second president as a four-year institution. He brought in a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience as a previous professor and president at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia. His lifelong dedication to education has been greatly appreciated by Coastal Georgia and is recognized throughout the campus.

D

uring the 2014-15 academic year, the college underwent some rigorous changes as apart of a strategic planning process presented by President Aloia. His leadership resulted in “Coastal Vision 2021,” a laid out plan for a dynamic pathway for the future of the College of Coastal Georgia. The strategic themes implemented and still in motion today are: Student Enrichment, Academic Excellence, Institutional Distinction, Leadership and Sustainability. With his determined outlook, the College has continued to grow in enrollment— a real accomplishment that confirms how successful Coastal Georgia has become. Under Aloia’s leadership, the student

large contribution to the increase in enrollment has also been due to the team’s efforts and commitment to finding more ways to make higher education more affordable and reduce costs for students. Due to the rising costs of higher education, textbooks and everything in-between, President Aloia and his team knew it was time to take initiative and show potential students that Coastal Georgia is committed to eliminating barriers for college completion.

ot only has the college helped to impact students' lives in a positive way but also for the local community of Brunswick, GA. In 2015, Coastal Georgia generated roughly $86.2 million and just under 1,000 jobs for the local community. As programs expanded and developed, more students sought out opportunities to thrive here in the Golden Isles. Under his term, more academic programs have been added: Workforce Management and Leadership, Public Management, Homeland Security, Information Assurance and cyberr Security, Data & Information Analytics, as well as Community and Organizational Leadership and Human Sevices under Psychology.

T

he community at the College of Coastal Georgia thank President Aloia for his accomplishments at this institution and wish him a very relaxed retirement. By. KYNDER GANOE

GETTING INVOLVED “

What is “Getting Involved”? Getting Involved” is a repeating article segment where we the Crow’s Nest goes out and finds professors who are taking that extra step with their students. Each segment will focus on an individual professor and what they have been doing to get more involved with the students here at CCGA as well as the coastal community.

Getting Involved: Dr. Vega

T

he college schedule can be much more difficult than the average high school schedule. Usually, the main difference is the flexibility you have with your college classes. If you’re like the typical college student who also works full-time, your days probably consist of something like: drink some coffee, go to class, try to sneak in gym time, go to work, do homework, eat, sleep, and repeat. With a busy schedule like that I’m sure it can be difficult to get everything done. Dr. Victor Vega, Interim Dean, School of Arts and Sciences and Associate Professor of Mathematics, has made it a point to help the students who may work full-time jobs and have a difficult time juggling school, work, and their home-life ver the past two semesters Dr. Vega has been offering students the option to take a math class at 7 in the morning. The purpose of these early morning classes is to help out those students who live a busy lifestyle and don’t have enough time to fit in all their daily duties. is very first class that he offered brought in a total of 35 students. Dr. Vega is very jubilant with the results of his first class.

O H

I’m very pleased with the results," said Dr. Vega. “To wake up at seven in the morning and be in class, you have no choice but to be prepared. The students engage more and are more willing to put forth effort.” he goal moving forward with this process is to try and find more professors who are willing to dedicate their time and offer a more diverse selection of early morning classes besides just math. “I hope some more teachers take action and become more willing to teach other courses,” said Dr. Vera when discussing the future of this idea. Professor Vega’s morning class is a must for us students who have a busy lifestyle. He makes his lectures interactive and humorous” said Lexi Dybe on how she feels about Dr. Vega’s early morning class. “Everyone is usually happy in his class, even though we are all pretty tired that early in the morning. Especially commuters, but with his jokes and smiles we both are able to learn and have a good time doing it.” r. Vega has done a fantastic job of getting more involved with the students at CCGA. Hopefully he has ignited a switch that will in turn result in more professors becoming more incline to start another early morning class for students.

Fit Bits:

Do they really make you a bit more fit?

What’s a Fitbit? A

by: allie Heeter

small, wearable device that tracks the amount of steps you take in a day, the actual distance you’ve walked in a day and your heart rate. It also has an app so that you can track the foods you consume and how much you weigh. The question is, does it really help you reach health and fitness goals?

Ginger ChafFIfinch Director of Recreation and Wellness

P

ersonally, I used to think it was silly to wear something on my wrist that tracked my every move, especially how many steps that I took in a day. Who cares?! As long as you are exercising in some form of fashion, does it really matter how many steps you take? I also didn’t particularly like the fact that a GPS was constantly connected to my body, more than my own cell phone was! Creepy.. owever, my best friend had a Fitbit and went on and on about how she and her mother were competing daily at who could take the most steps. I love friendly competition, especially if it gets you exercising or eating right, so I caved and decided to try it out. Luckily, my boyfriend let me borrow his for a week so that I didn’t have to spend any money to test drive something I thought was worthless. day into wearing it, I found myself aggravated because my friend had 3,000 more steps than I had! Granted, I was on my winter vacation, but that is no excuse to not get my body moving. I then found myself walking up and down the neighborhood streets, at 9:00 at night, in order to catch up with her. ho would have thought? Such a simple piece of equipment getting my booty off the couch and walking around. Although I was really impressed, I haven’t touched the thing since. I decided to ask CCGA’s Director of Recreation and Wellness what she thought about her Fitbit.

H

I have been a runner for years and have always used a watch with a GPS to track my mileage. I recently got the Fitbit for Christmas and absolutely love it. It tracks my mileage and time but also does so many other things that I wasn’t even aware watches could do. This watch allows me to set daily and weekly goals for myself and what I love best about it is that it reminds me to get up and get moving if I have been sitting to long. It vibrates occasionally and that way I know its time to walk, run, or do some type of aerobic activity. t’s also great at motivating me. Who knew a watch could make you feel so good. When my goals are accomplished or I get done working out it actually shoots off fireworks and tells me what a great job I did. Pretty cool if you ask me. astly, I love the fact that I can track my sleep. Every one knows that sleep is imperative to a healthy life style and how frustrating is to not really be sure about what’s happening during your night-time hours. The Fitbit allows me to see when and how long I am in a deep sleep, awake, or restless during the night. This answers a lot of questions about how I am feeling in the morning. wear it all the time and have been in love with it since the moment I put it on. It tells me a lot about what’s happening during my day and it doesn’t hurt that it’s stylish too.” - Ginger Chaffinch.

CLASS IS OUT!

CLUB Spotlight: Biology Club C

CGA has an amazing club in its midst for those who love biology, nature, and/or science. The Biology Club is a club that is meant to inspire, help, and raise interest in the biology and science fields. The main purpose of the club “is to connect students with opportunities for things like internships, graduate school programs, and jobs in biology” as Biology Club President Jay Landow says with a collected tone.

L

ast issue there was a No Friday Class article from College administrator’s perscpective about this intelligent schedule. This article is from the view point of the students; commuters, dorm-livers, and organization leaders alike. The No Friday Class schedule is definitely a frequently brought up topic between students, and most of the chatter is positive.

his club is one of the larger clubs on campus, hosting events once a month on Thursdays at 5 PM unless an event causes the time to change. To know exactly when the meetings are, “join the CCGA Biology Club’s Facebook page. On our page, we post all the upcoming meetings and events, as well as share interesting articles or memes related to biology” Jay tells, smirking.

iology Club is continuing their participation with the college by being part of many upcoming events. They are having two adopt-a-highway volunteer events, playing a movie in the Stembler Theatre, and Arbor Day and Earth Day events. Biology Club is also planning two field trips for this semester. Any information needed will be posted on their Facebook page. iology Club’s next meeting will be on February 28th in HS 101 at 5 PM. Where they will be “discussing the various activities our club will be participating in over the rest of the semester. There will also be a representative from Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Center at the meeting to recruit people for their summer internship,” Jay informed.

B

iology is an amazing club full of opportunities to both learn and make lasting impressions by sharing concepts and ideas. It is a club that shall stay entwined in CCGA’s clubs and organizations for many years to come, where they are always welcoming new members and intrigued science lovers alike.

uch as what Jay Landow says as a club leader, “the main way it affected us (Biology Club) was when we were planning events. It seemed like since nobody has Friday classes that Friday would be a good time to have events. However, on the flip side of that sentiment, we found that commuters would not want to come all the way to campus just for a Biology Club event.” Which is why they still host their events during the school week, and in the evening so that most students would be able to attend their events.

ommuter student Jonathon Edgy agreed with the Biology Club’s plan with not hosting events on Fridays. Not having to drive on Fridays “cuts down on the transportation costs and allows me time to catch up and study for classes.” Commuters are happy to finally rest up on Fridays, not having to wake up extra early for classes so they can make it in time. Especially since the cost of gas has been higher than normal, and the time to travel back and forth is enough to study two hours for some commuters. or students who live in the dorms they do not have to worry about driving every morning but as one student, Rodney Slater, states “I feel like it’s a break from the usual schedule because some people might need that time to catch up on assignments or get something important done that day.” He also spoke about how he didn’t have Friday classes last semester and that he is happy about how students and faculty alike can do what they must do to make CCGA whole and less stressful.

N

o Friday classes have brought the school together and made CCGA more relaxed as a whole. The students are glad to have time to relax, study, or work. This schedule has been another incredible improvement by CCGA. Let’s keep improving and moving forward. BY:lexi dybe

Bringing a Community Together

E

very year, the Golden Isles Arts and Humanities, the Marshes of Glynn Library System, College of Coastal Georgia, and Three Rivers Library System sponsor a program by the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts Midwest called The Big Read. During the weeks of the program, residents of the community are encouraged to get involved in activities ranging from art exhibits and wine tasting, to kayak tours and book discussions. A goal of the project is to gain the interest of children and young adults alike by promoting a specific book or novel each year. The Big Read 2017 promoted a book by acclaimed author Ursula K. Le Guin called Earthsea: A Wizard of Earthsea.

A

Wizard of Earthsea is the first of six fantasy novels written by Le Guin, each with their own tantalizing and magical adventure through the islands of Earthsea, and the mage and wizards who call the archipelago home. Le Guin takes the reader along on a journey with the main character, Ged, a young wizard who has yet to discover his true potential, to master his craft and become the wizard he is capable of being. Ged begins to find his way in the world with the help of his mentor, Ogion, an older and wiser mage who takes him under his wing and triesto point the young prodigy in the direction of knowledge and power.

A

S

GA is proud to sponsor and host our annual Big Leadership Weekend on March 25th, 2017. This event is going to be a monumental time that gives you an opportunity to learn essential leadership skills and tangible ways to apply these skills to your life in college. Each student in attendance will have the chance to hear from three different speakers, engage with other student leaders, and attend a resource fair to learn about bettering our campus and community.

R

egistration for this event will begin on February 27th, 2017 and will be found in your student email.

s with anything in life, hardships are sure to arise and young Ged must find it within himself to overcome both the physical and moral obstacles he faces along his way. As much as he loves his mentor and trusts his power, Ged soon begins to yearn for more than what he feels Ogion has to offer. So, filled with both excitement and a heavy heart for leaving his beloved mentor, Ged boards a ship destined for a distant island of the archipelago, where he is accepted into a school for wizards. Ged’s ego soon bests him when he meets Jasper, a fellow student who rivals his power and taunts him into a spellcasting dual.

A

mistakenly obnoxious Ged tries to spellbound elements beyond his young wizardly control and conjures a shadow beast that nearly kills him. The shadow beast, now free from its other-worldly realm, will continue to haunt Ged until he finally learns to come to terms with himself, and also who the shadow beast truly is. Le Guin successfully transports her readers into a thrilling world of wizards, magic, and dragons, and demands a stretch of the imagination for everyone who chooses to immerse his or herself in this wonderful fantasy novel.

Mariners,

A

s we are quickly moving through the spring semester, it is important to take a moment to begin planning for the upcoming months ahead. Soon, there will be only a few weeks remaining to fit everything into your schedule. I want to make sure that you take advantage of the opportunities during this semester, so I have created the below list that includes some (but not all!) of the possible items to consider: * Have you been thinking about joining that club or organization, but you have not yet attended a meeting? Now is the time to attend! Is there a student organization that you would like to create? Begin that process now so it is ready to go for fall 2017. The Office of Student Life can help you with this process. * Support our student athletes. Thanks to all our students who attended games in the fall. Basketball, golf, tennis, and softball teams have games in the spring semester. Check out the CCGA Athletics webpage or social media for more information. * Prepare for upcoming tests, mid-terms, and finals. Utilize your resources, including the ATTIC and the Writing Center to help you. * In March, you will be able to register for fall classes. Pay close attention to the opening registration dates so that you can enroll for the classes, professors, and dates/times that work best for you. Have you considered taking a few summer classes? You can register now for summer. Please contact your advisor or the Center of Academic Advising. * With the nice spring weather in the Golden Isles, consider using our recreation and wellness activities on campus, such as the Fitness Trail, the BRIG, and our Fitness Center. We have great sand volleyball and basketball courts. Ask your friends to join you to stay healthy this semester.

D

uring the month of February, the Student Health Center is celebrating American Heart Month by hosting events to engage students in their overall heart health. Some of the events held earlier this month included Black History Month Celebration Kickoff in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The event focused on educating students on prevention and risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. The Student Health Center also sponsored a Heart Health Walk to promote National Go Red Day in order to raise awareness of heart disease in women. For the remainder of the month students are encouraged to visit the health center to discuss their heart health numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight). Each scheduled appointment includes a heart healthy treat!

I

n the month of March, the Student Health Center will continue to promote its healthy lifestyle campaign #ownit by celebrating National Nutrition Month ®, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to reinforce the importance of developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The official theme this year is “Put Your Best Fork Forward,” a phrase according to Jim Coleman, Ltd inspires individuals to start with small changes toward a healthy eating lifestyle – one forkful at a time.

F

or some college students, healthy eating and getting enough physical activity is a challenge. Thanks to busy class schedules, students often eat from vending machines, take-out food, pizza delivery, or whatever is convenient. Physical activity becomes late night studying for exams and reviewing class material. The USDA states that individuals make choices every day that often lead to eating too much of the unhealthy things and moving too little.

T

o encourage students to develop healthier eating habits and set specific health related goals, the Student Health Center is bringing two professional nutritionist to campus on Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 10am – 2pm. Schedule your appointment today by contacting Thearon Filson at tfilson@ccga.edu or 912.279.5804.

* Are you ready to build your resume with a job this semester or this summer? Contact the Office of Career Services and they can help you with your resume, cover letter, and job search. * We have a lot of programming activities planned for the remainder of the semester. Check out the calendar on the CCGA website for upcoming events!

W

e look forward to seeing you continue to become more connected and engaged to our campus.

COASTAL GEORGIA NATIVE ENJOYING LIFE AS A PROFESSIONAL

C

ole Ferrell who is currently a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, graduated high school from Glynn Academy here in Brunswick, Ga. He is passionate about his roots and considers Coastal Georgia his true home. Cole is a cooperate healthcare recruiter half the time, and a professional Mixed Martial Artist the other half.

H

e is currently 2-0 as a professional with his most recent win coming in the form of a 84-second submission at Valor 40 on February 11th. His past three wins, one being an amateur bout, have all ended in a first round finish, but there was something special about this fight compared to ones in the past. Ferrell was originally scheduled to fight his opponent at Valor 39 on December 2, but Ferrell ended up being hospitalized a few days before the bout. Cole was attempting to cut down to fight at flyweight, which is 125 lbs., but due to an unhealthy amount of weight loss his body shut down on him and the fight was cancelled. Cole was devastated that he was unable to perform, but that didn’t make him lose any motivation. It actually gave him more inspiration to continue and prove everybody who has doubted him wrong.

W

ithin hours of Ferrell being hospitalized his scheduled opponent instantly used this as a platform to call Ferrell out. The fighter continually blasted Cole on social media by saying that he was just scared and that’s why the fight was cancelled. Ferrell didn’t think too fond of this and the talk surrounding the two fighters started to pick up through social media, so Valor Fights decided to reschedule the bout for a later time so that these two men could each get a piece of one another.

F

inally, after negotiation and ongoing talk between the two fighters, they agreed to meet each other in Nashville, Tennessee at Valor 40. Cole and his opponent started the war of words immediately following the announcement and continued all the way up until the day of the fight. Then, the time had finally come to stop all the talking and start backing it up. The fight took place at a catchweight of 130 this time, instead of the originally scheduled weight of 125. During the night of February 11th these two warriors stood across from each other on each side of the octagon, prepared for war. As the first round begun the two warriors engaged in a battle that quickly turned in Ferrell’s favor. Within the first :15 seconds of the bout Ferrell landed a strong left hand that sent his opponent to the canvas. The fighters grappled each other on the ground for close to a minute before Ferrell was in complete control. Ferrell was determined to get the finish, so at the 1:24 mark of the first-round Cole was able to submit his opponent via rear naked choke.

A

s Ferrell was locking in the choke he looked up at the ref and insisted the fight was already finished before the ref had a chance to stop the fight. “This fight is over! This fight is over!” Ferrell screamed at the ref as he was squeezing his opponent like a boa constrictor. Ferrell was very pleased that he was able to get the win for not only himself, but for who is family.

C

ole will continue to strive to become the greatest mixed martial artist while also taking care of his son and family. “I am the one. If you doubt me, I will show you.” By: Sam Doppke
