Dean of Students' COrner Mariners,

H

ow can finding a mentor on campus help you? A mentor can help you become successful both at College and after you graduate. A mentor is someone who can help you academically and/ or help guide you in a direction to be successful. Anyone (faculty and staff) on campus can be a mentor. It is important that you seek out individuals who can easily connect with you and who can provide advice in the areas that you need. Mentors, through their own experience, have the ability to see the areas where you are strong, but also see the areas where we have the most opportunity to grow. One of the best aspects of a mentor is that they listen to all the different options available to you to solve an issue and they can then provide you with candid advice and recommendations to help you with your decision. Mentors have the ability to connect you with individuals on- or off-campus to help you achieve your goals and/or build your professional network. In the end, mentors provide you with constant encouragement and motivation to help you see the “bigger picture to ultimately achieve your goals. If you currently have a mentor, take a moment and thank them for all that they do for you. If you do not yet have a mentor, take some time to think about the interactions you have had with faculty and staff members on campus and continue to build those connections that will help you be further supported at the College. Shonda Martinez

What is your full name? Shonda Leah Leggett Martinez What is your major? Psychology What are your career goals? Becoming a counselor for veterans who have mental disabilities. What was the best part of CCGA? The faculty in the Psychology department. They made my transition from the military to an educational setting so easy. Everyone has always been so supportive, from my advisor, Dr. Hambright, to my professor Dr. Culley, even the Chair, Dr. Pope and the Dean Dr. Vega, they have all been so supportive of my dreams. What was the worst part about CCGA? When I started here the participation in Valor was low, but it is a blessing to have a president that truly cares for the veterans and that is willing to listen to the veterans and make the necessary changes. Do you have a funny CCGA story? When the veterans went to Orlando, Florida, we were relaxing by the pool side and all of a sudden another veteran, Terrence Dingle, came and jumped in the pool and splashed everyone. This was unexpected because it was the middle of February and the water was freezing cold. What activities/club were you involved in at CCGA? Of course the psychology club, and VALOR. We love to participate in as many activities at the school because it is good for the family. Where are you from? I was born in Rockhill South Carolina, but I was raised in Metter Ga. Did you transfer to CCGA? From where? Yes, from South University in Savannah, GA Who was your favorite faculty/staff? Every faculty member in the psychology department Anything that you want people to know about CCGA? The faculty in the psychology department have always been there to help. I have learned a lot from them. I would not be graduating without their help.

The De-stress Edition

De-stress with Meditation

1. 2. 3.

Why Meditate?

Beat Anxiety!

Studies show that meditation helps increase mindfulness which in turn decreases anxious thoughts.

A Happy Pill: Smile more!

Becoming mindful through meditation allows for us to view our negative thoughts and to remember that those thoughts are not us.

Stress Less!

“A study on teachers at a school for children with severe behavioral problems who were treated to a Transcendental Meditation program had less stress, less depression, and overall lower burnout than other teachers.” -mindful.org

Laughter!

rowing up, my grandma always told me that laughter was the best medicine. I always thought she was full of bologna until I started experiencing, for myself, the feelings of relaxation that laughter brought. Also, Harvard Health Publications said that “laughter has been found to lower levels of stress hormones.” t started when I was first experiencing puberty. I would lash out hateful actions towards my parents for no reason but to unleash the demon hormones that were inside of me. However, my dad would just laugh at me, make a joke of how ridiculous I was acting, we both would laugh, and then the angry little dudette inside of me would go back to sleep. s I grew up and started to form stronger bonds with other young adults, I realized that portraying a serious attitude during a debate did not help with continuing a logical argument. Instead, a lighthearted, chuckle-here-and-there type of conversation was the best way to keep things cool and logical with other humans. As you can see, laughing has kept things calm for me over the years. am now in my late college years, early career years. There is a time and a place to be serious, but there is also a time and a place to laugh your head off. Yes, it is inappropriate at times to laugh while taking your final exams or while you are in a work meeting. However, instead of bringing that seriousness outside of the classroom or outside of the office, lighten up a little once you leave! Make yourself laugh to relieve some tension and stress from your daily duties.

Want to learn

how to make yourself laugh?!

1.

Follow these 5 steps: Watch a funny movie or TV show.

Don’t have movies or a TV? Then go to our college or local library and watch some YouTube videos (it’s free!).

2.

3. 4.

Make funny faces in the mirror.

Grab a mirror and make crazy faces in the mirror. You’ll eventually start laughing at how ridiculous you feel.

Fake it, until you make it.

Start fake laughing and eventually your body will start laughing for real.

Sit upside down on a couch & pretend to laugh.

I swear, something about being upside down really gets the laughter flowin’!

Do a silly dance in front of the mirror.

COLLEGE OF cOASTAL Georgia HEALTH Center

The words health and wellness are sometimes used interchangeably. Health is referring to the physical body – the absence of disease and injury in CGA is full of unique clubs of all different backgrounds and the body. Wellness on the other hand, encompasses the complete physical, purposes, yet one of the most unique to the campus is its mental, and social being. The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as SCUBA club, where because of CCGA’s position so close to an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence. tion defines sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships including safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. Mental Health: Some young adults have unrealistic expectations of academics, social and family expectations that can bring about stress, anxiety, or depression. Some individuals feel a sense of insecurity when things “never go their way” or when they are stressed and confused. They do not know how to express their feelings or may not understand what is going on emotionally and may resort to drug or alcohol use, become sexually promiscuous, become aggressive, or even pursue risk-taking behaviors as a way to express themselves. If these attitudes and behaviors are left untreated, new problems will surface or feelings can become life threatening. If you or someone you know is presenting any symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression please contact the Office of Counseling Services at counseling@ccga.edu.

Healthy Relationships: In the beginning relationships are exciting and seem effortless. Some of us enter into relationships with ideas based on family values, Hollywood, or past experiences. These exhausting expectations we place on our partner can cause the relationship to quickly fail. A relationship must have a foundation built on trust, communication, appreciation, and respect. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, communication and boundaries are the two major components of any healthy relationship. These two factors allow each person in the relationship to feel connected but still have a sense of being independent. Establishing healthy patterns, eliminating negative behaviors, and managing your expectorations can create long term, solid relationships.

Glamorous week, bright lights

here was a week of glamour and plenty of activities. The theme was Hollywood, where it even put Hollywood in the backlights as CCGA stole the spotlight. Making everyone feel at home, or as if they were on the red carpet. It started like a celebrity getting out of a glistening white limousine. omecoming week kicked off with clubs and CCGA’s involvement groups showed their artsy side with the making of banners that soon decorated the Campus Center in beauty and talent. Making it look like the glamorous posters of movies that have come and passed. Not going unnoticed with the glorious art. he following day held a comic-con hosted by CCGA’s bookstore, with a photography booth, cosplays, and various vendors that gave the students a wonderful atmosphere and experience. Some found the comic books and collectables, others found the game station where they played Injustice, Mario, and other fun-filled games. ump day had arrived, but it was a great day that CCGA slid over the hump easily with Coastal’s Got Talent where CCGA students showed what they had, and CCGA, indeed, had infinite amount of talent. CCGA came together to watch the marvel of all its talented students’ performances. From singing to tae kwon do, it was quite the show. ut the talent did not stop there, athletes showed what they were gifted in. They were competing in CCGA’s Olympics, athletes ran, exercised, and worked to see the strongest while still having great fun. It was a perfect challenge towards the end of an amazing week. riday is always funday, which was full of glamour and bets. The night started with students flaunting their best styles, men and women, but that was not the only thing students flaunted that night. They were flaunting their smiles as Casino Night started with a bang. Students had luck and great dreams as the college brought the casino environment to our college. It was a wondrous event that had the night feeling ever young. he glamorous week was coming to an end, but not without a bang. It was time for what CCGA waited for, basketball and the famous crowning. During the men’s halftime during the game one male and female was crowned. The 2017 king and queen was Tamera Adams and Sean Tarpley, where they gladly accepted such a role. After the basketball game was the grand after-party where students danced for hours, where fun had ensued and many memories were made. he week had ended with much excitement, smiles, and memories. Where CCGA finished with a grand finale and a lasting impression. Making the week feel like a walk on the red carpet. Even with the Hollywood theme coming to an end, CCGA still shines with the brightest of lights.

Getting Involved: student edition

he College of Coastal Georgia is continuing to grow at a pretty quick pace. With the number of students continuing to increase, we will see the number of students who are willing to get more involved increase. ne of the best ways to become more involved with the school and athletics is to join the Pep Band. Pep Bands usually consist of specialty musical groups whose goals are to promote school spirit, entertain school sports event audiences, and encourage the school athletes. The pep band’s goal is to energize the students at games and game-related functions. aniel Finney, who is a member of the pep band, has continually worked on getting more involved. He had this to say about the pep band and their role of getting more involved with the athletics: The pep band has made rally towels and passed them out during basketball games, but have mainly focused on setting the example for the type of atmosphere they want to set for our home court. Cheering for our teams, annoying the opponent, it’s all for a good time with friends and showing our support for the College of Coastal Georgia,” said Finney about the pep bands motive. inney and the Pep band have a vision in mind when they think about the direction in which they plan to go. “We envision students coming to the Coffin gym on gamedays not just as a social event, but as an opportunity to cheer on our fellow Mariners and create the best home environment in NAIA Basketball,” said Finney. “Next year should be interesting with the teams having a year to get used to playing together, plus entering a new conference next year should help because the travel time is nearly cut in half,” he added. he Pep Band is a great route to go if you are wanting to get more involved in school athletics and activities. Even Captain Jack had something to say about students getting more involved in school athletics. I want the students to take pride in where we are and who we are. There is a purpose for it so we should enjoy the moments we are in. Why not show up, have fun, make fun of the opponent, and cheer your school to victory? Go Blue, Hail The Sail, and GO MARINERS!”

New Conference

he College of Coastal Georgia is looking to start a new chapter in the 2017-2018 academic year. The College was unanimously approved for membership into The Sun Conference by the league’s Council of Presidents. This is a major change going forward being that CCGA has competed in the Southern States Athletic Conference since moving up to the NAIA in 2011. oastal Georgia’s Athletic Director, Dr. William Carlton, had much to say about the college’s move. “The Sun Conference is an outstanding and highly competitive league. This is a great step and logical transition for Mariners Athletics,” said Dr. Carlton. r. Carlton went on to discuss the reasoning behind the move and how it will benefit not only the college, but the studentathletes as well. The transition was the result of the unforeseen membership transitions in the SSAC. These changes led to increasingly difficult travel schedules for our student-athletes that impacted their academic standing and our competitiveness. Additionally, the extensive travel schedules for all teams placed strain on the department’s resources. Membership in the Sun Conference will greatly benefit our student-athletes in terms of both their academic and athletic experience. It will allow our student-athletes to spend less time traveling and therefore more time in class while still allowing our teams to compete for championships in The Sun Conference and NAIA. We have already built healthy competitive relationships with many of the conference’s members” ince joining the NAIA in 2011, the Mariners have made their mark on the sports scene, winning the NAIA Men’s National Golf Championship in 2014 and 2015. Coastal currently offers eight of the 16 sports which The Sun Conference sponsor championships: men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and volleyball. oastal Georgia fits perfectly into the Sun Conference’s existing footprint, bridging the gap between the league’s northern-most members in USC Beaufort and SCAD Savannah and its eight Florida schools. The conference currently consists of Florida universities Ave Maria, Florida Memorial, Johnson and Wales, Keiser, Southeastern, St. Thomas, Warner and Webber International, Savannah College of Art and Design and Thomas University in Georgia and University of South Carolina Beaufort. CCGA will become the 12th member of conference. his year will mark the end of an era at CCGA as we say goodbye to the Southern States Athletic Conference and say hello to the Sun Conference and new beginnings.

Coastal Corner Sports

February March | 13| 13 | 13 October

CGA is a campus that is full of diversity in talent, activities, and especially cultural backgrounds. All students are unique with how they are made, behave, and where they come from. CCGA recognizes all these about its students and more, that is why they have made an annual event called the International Festival. t all started in 2011 “with the Abbott Institute coming to CCGA and starting a partnership. We wanted an international fair on campus” as Jaime Parker-Lewis, Assistant Dean of Student Life, recalls how the event started. In the eyes of Abbott and CCGA diversity it seemed that the campus needed a more cultural fair. A fair that could be a celebration as well. “We wanted something at the end of the year for us to celebrate the diversity in our campus and community.” his year will be the 6th annual festival, “there will be food vendors representing various cultures at the festival” Brittany Garcia, Coordinator of Student Engagement & Intercultural Programs, says eagerly. The vendors are mostly local, but the fun does not stop there. There is also entertainment, from Acrobatrix, Klezmer Local 42, Steel Drum Band, and more. he event is for the campus and community, which means some parts of the event costs money. Students however, that bring their ID card get 6 free food tickets after that food tickets will be a dollar a piece. And most vendors and events take cash only, so it is safe if one leaves the card at home and brings in a little bit of cash to experience the entire event. Each food vendor costs 1-2 tickets, which can bring in quite the amount of food. his event is “growing every year as the word gets out and people enjoy having fun and learning about new cultures.” Brittany Garcia expresses. She also says “I want students to live the event and to get the best experience out of college, and this is one of those events. So, go have fun!” hich is why every student should go to the event, to support not only the campus but also the community. To experience life and various cultures without leaving campus. It is a world tour brought to CCGA, a celebration that the year is almost over, and a learning experience that also winds down the mind. Join CCGA in the 6th annual International Festival.

he College of Coastal Georgia men’s tennis team is a hot topic. The College of Coastal Georgia men’s tennis team was picked first in the 2017 SSAC Men’s Tennis Coaches’ Preseason Poll heading into the season. ast season, the team was able to make it to the NAIA tournament quarterfinals with coach Baker at the helm. Now the team has gone in a different direction after coach Baker left the program to assume the same role at Methodist University in North Carolina. Last summer, the team hired Zack Rogers who comes from former conference rival Dalton State. oach Rogers had high praise for CCGA and the Coastal Georgia area. “I am definitely very pleased to be at Coastal Georgia. I think it is a very exciting time to be joining the College during this very transformative period. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Coastal Georgia as well as living on St. Simons” said coach Rogers. oastal Georgia went 13-4 last season, with a 7-2 conference record. This years’ team will feature returning players that consist of seniors Josh Banks and Rhan Burton, who were all-conference players last year, and sophomore Ben Dolan. hen asked on what he can bring to the team coach Rogers had this to say, “I believe that tennis is a very cerebral game so I look for student-athletes who can excel in the classroom, on the courts, and as servant leaders. I think the three additions to the men’s team for the spring season reflect that approach and possess those qualities” he said. “As long as I am able to get the guys to buy into the idea that our success will be dependent upon their commitment to making their teammates more successful, we will have a great season filled with accolades,” he added. enior Rhan Burton is optimistic about the team’s direction under coach Rogers. “I think Zack has plenty of tactical experience and is going to look to get the most out of each player on this team,” he team is expected to have a good season so be sure to follow along as the season progresses.

C

W

S T

he College of Coastal Georgia women’s team is a bit of a different story than the men. Last season the women’s team only consisted of four players and had a difficult time dealing with depth. This year they have brought in four new players including transfer Samantha Sepe who came to Coastal Georgia from the University of Central Florida.

Coastal was a huge change from UCF. I went from classes with 400+ people in them to classes with less than 30. Personally, I have been doing better academically with the smaller class sizes so CCGA is a nice change,” said Sepe on the difference she has experienced since coming to Coastal. Sepe believes strongly in this group of players and is ready to compete with any of the competition. “I think we have a solid team this season, so as long as everyone is committed to putting in the time and effort it takes to be the best, there won’t be too much stopping us.”

T

he main goal according to coach Rogers for the women is to continually grow throughout the season. “We will focus on developing the talent we have now and continued positive growth throughout the season,” said coach Rogers.

T

he women’s team at this point sits at seven players and will have new student-athletes coming in next year from a number of different countries and states. This team will grow and get better throughout this season, plus adding more players next season it will help play a pivotal role in bringing a balance between the two programs. By: Sam Doppke
