This year has been an extremely exciting and wonderful time for the Carmel Catholic community. Just this past summer, we finished a comprehensive strategic plan that is designed to focus exclusively on fulfilling our mission.

WELC O M E

Greetings! Thank you for taking the time to read our COMPASS publication and for your support and help in Carmel Catholic’s mission.

One of the major components of our strategic plan is the continued development of our BVM and Carmelite Catholic Identity. Just this year we were able to increase the frequency of our daily mass schedule from once per week to three times per week. We implemented weekly rosary and Eucharistic adoration for all our students. We have been able to bring in guest speakers such as alumni Sam Attar ’94, and Rwandan refugee survivor and Catholic priest, Fr. Ubald. Both of these individuals were able to provide first-person accounts of their experiences in a world in need of social justice. We have also been fortunate to host the “My Father’s Love” exhibit for our Lake County and Chicago community members. This exhibit has brought more than 1,000 visitors to Carmel Catholic and has allowed our students to serve as docents. In addition to all of these accomplishments, our students performed more than 45,000 hours of Christian Service this past year. We are extremely fortunate and proud to have a dedicated and talented student body.

All of these great new programs and accomplishments would be impossible without the involvement and support of our alumni. Carmel Catholic’s mission is to provide an education that develops the entire person through care and love in a Christ-centered environment. Your support helps create this environment and directly impacts our students who are in financial need. If you have not done so already, please prayerfully consider supporting a Carmel Catholic student. Thank you again for your involvement and willingness to back our students and our Christ-centered mission. God bless all of you! In Christ’s Peace, Bradley K. Bonham, Ph.D. President of Carmel Catholic High School

COMPASS | Spring 2017

Academically, Carmel Catholic has had many successes! We hit record highs for our composite ACT scores, and this year’s graduating class was awarded more than $34.5 million in college scholarships. More than 150 colleges visited our campus this past year and our students were accepted to more than 400 different colleges and universities. A significant number of our graduates were commended national merit scholars, and more than 70 percent of our graduating class received college merit scholarships. This year we launched a new engineering program as well as an innovative Business INCubator program. These programs are designed with the intention of creating a learning environment that develops our student body’s critical thinking and analytical skills. Our fine arts programs continue to grow, as well. This fall and spring we featured a visual art exhibit showcasing hundreds of pieces of art designed and created by our students. The exhibit brought hundreds within our community to view our students’ artwork. Our NYAN Robotics team placed 1st in the state and 13th in the world championship. Overall, we are very proud of our successes and accomplishments. As you may have heard, Carmel Catholic High School is positioned in the top 1 percent of schools in the nation, and is recognized as a four-time blue ribbon award winner!

NYAN Robotics Ends Impressive Season at World Competition Team was among the top three percent to qualify for world championship

NYAN designs and builds its sophisticated robots in a state-of-the-art lab located at the home of Danny ’17 and Thomas ’19, sons of Brian ’83 and Debbie Donahoe Twelve students from Carmel Catholic’s varsity robotics team, NYAN (Not Your Average Nerds) Robotics, advanced to the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship Robotics Tournament, held April 26-29 in St. Louis. Competing with 158 teams from the United States and around the world, NYAN finished in 13th place.

The World Championship tournament was a fourday event, and ended a very long season that began last September, during which the team designed and programed sophisticated mechanisms, worked out technical bugs and perfected their robot’s mechanical, electrical and software operations.

This second-year team, comprised of freshmen through seniors, has had its share of impressive accomplishments. Leading up to the team’s debut at Worlds, NYAN had a phenomenal showing at the state competition held in Elgin, and became one of only nine teams from the state to advance to the super-regional tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. At super-regionals, NYAN went on to win a coveted Rockwell Collins Innovate Award and ultimately qualified itself to compete at the world level, where the top three percent of teams ultimately arrive.

Working in their decked out lab, and with the input of their coaches, mentors, and local engineers, the team’s robot was designed to use two team-programmed Android

“Advancing to the World Championship is everything we could have hoped for,” said Danny Donahoe ’17, co-founder of NYAN. “We [were] excited to represent Carmel and the United States of America in this competition.” 4

L I F E C A M P U S NYAN was part of the winning alliance at the state competition in February Besides the many disciplines of engineering required by the team to create their robot and strategize about solving key aspects of their challenges, the team is also responsible for fundraising, accounting/budgeting, procurement, extensive documentation, graphic arts, video production, marketing, sales, management and team building.

“Competing at Worlds is a great opportunity for our team and for our school. We are so grateful for Carmel Catholic’s support of NYAN as their varsity robotics team, and we are elated that we are a crucial part of their resolute STEM program,” said Kevin Coda ’17, team captain and co-founder of NYAN. The team’s mission is to not only expand their own STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills, but also to spark an interest in robotics and STEM within the community and at Carmel Catholic. Throughout the season, the team has hosted or participated in many community-based outreach programs and workshops, including holding live demonstrations of their robot’s abilities during the lunch periods at Carmel.

mobile phones, as well as an array of metal parts, 3-D printed parts, motors, sensors and Xbox game controllers. Eighteen inches tall and 18 inches wide, the robot represented the team in this year’s Velocity Vortex game, an action-packed challenge that sets robots against one another in a test of accuracy, speed and consistency.

Congratulations, Class of 2017! Seniors Reflect on Their Time at Carmel

On the evening of Friday, May 26, 343 seniors joined our vibrant community of Corsair alumni. Congratulations to this outstanding group of young women and men. For an overview of this year’s graduation events and accomplishments of the Class of 2017, watch for the next issue of Compass.

I used to believe that Carmel was just another high school that I would spend four years of my life at. Over time, I have come to see this place for what it really is: a community. I have learned to believe in the Carmel Community and can safely call this place my home. Anthony Orsini

“ “

Carmel is a place where I discovered love for others, love for myself, and love for God. Diana Oleksyn

Carmel was an experience like no other. I was able to meet people I never would have otherwise, challenge myself in difficult classes, and create wonderful relationships with teachers. I have been constantly pushed to do my best and work hard in my classes and I think this will really pay off in college. Emily Edicola

On April 6, HydraForce hosted a group of 40 Carmel engineering students. The visit included tours of the HydraForce manufacturing plant and Innovation and Technology Center, presentations from employees in various engineering disciplines - including product design, electronics, sales, application, and manufacturing engineering - and several hands-on activities and demonstrations, such as creating an engineering drawing, diagraming a circuit, and building a check valve.

“We were pleased to host these students from the engineering program at Carmel - it was the third school we have hosted this year for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program, and the largest group,” said Robyn Safron, human resources manager at HydraForce.

“Our engineering students really enjoyed the day,” said John Titterton, Carmel Catholic engineering and math teacher and engineering department chair. “HydraForce treated our students as the young adults and aspiring engineers that they are. The ability to see an actual manufacturing plant and assembly line, as well as to work directly with experienced design engineers, left a positive impression of engineering and manufacturing that our students will take with them as they go forward in their education.” HydraForce, based in Lincolnshire, designs and manufactures high performance hydraulic fluid power cartridge valves, custom manifolds and electrohydraulic controls.

COMPASS | Spring 2017

“HydraForce is a company that depends on the quality of its manufacturing and engineering as a competitive advantage, so we enjoyed the chance to give these promising young engineers what a typical day is like,” said Jim Brizzolara, HydraForce president and founder. “The study of engineering and other STEM fields is definitely a path to opportunity. Our management team reflects that, as many of them started with us as engineers or in manufacturing.”

Carmel Catholic once again took a group of 13 seniors to Washington, DC for the Right-to-Life Pilgrimage on January 27. Often thought of and referred to as the March for Life, the event is actually much more than just the advocacy to stop legalized abortion. The pilgrimage includes two rallies that consist of speakers, Christian Rock performers, and special prayers; the evening rally has adoration and the morning rally has Mass. The students that attended included: Allison Sneed, Annabelle Schofield, Ben Burkhalter, Bridgette Lacke, Colleen Drangines, Danielle Savovich, Diana Oleksyn, Erin Kehoe, Hannah Fruscione, Jaclyn Battaglia, Maeve O’Malley, Patrick Teehan and Sarah Speranza.

Fine Arts Sr. Margaret Mear Visits Art Classes

Sr. Margaret Mear, BVM, traveled from Dubuque, Iowa to spend the day with Carmel art students on April 12. She is a former Carmel teacher (1968-1974) as well as a former college art professor. During her visit, Sr. Margaret lead a collegelevel critique with Art 1 students in the Fine Arts Gallery, in which students talked about their Pop Art inspired prints. During studio time in Introduction to Art, Ceramics/Sculpture, and Art 1 classes, Sr. Margaret spoke with individual students about their projects. She asked students about the subject matter, the content/meaning behind their work and the overall design, and she provided them with constructive feedback. Sr. Margaret shared her work with students through an image presentation that included graphite drawings and sculptures. She passionately talked about the inspiration and purpose of her work and answered students’ questions. Students enjoyed spending time with Sr. Margaret and learning about her artwork.

The Orchesis Dance Company members who performed alongside of Brianna Dufault were Isabelle Massarelli ’18, Isabella Poma ’20 and Charlotte Titus ’19. 10

Graphic Design Students Design Catholic Charities’ Anniversary T-shirts

In May, Catholic Charities, one of the largest private, nonprofit social service agencies in the Midwest, celebrated 100 years of service in the Chicagoland area. Students in Graphic Design 2 helped celebrate this occasion by designing Catholic Charities’ anniversary t-shirts. After researching and sketching up ideas, the students finalized approximately 20 designs which reflect the mission of the organization. Students’ designs were presented to the charity’s Board of Directors as well as the Lake County Board.

On February 18, Carmel Cadence competed at “Clash of the Sequins” at Naperville North High School. Along with the group competition, there was also an individual solo competition. Of our six students competing, Emily Tyndorf ’17 received the best female soloist award.

Street Scenes “Spaces Out” a Success

What a year it was for Street Scenes “Spaces Out,” held February 10 and 11. Through the generous efforts of our students, their parents, alumni, and friends, Street Scenes raised $383,786 to support the academic programs at Carmel Catholic - the most we have raised since 2008! This year’s attendance was 6,099, the largest adult crowd we have seen since 2009. Join us February 9 and 10, 2018, when Street Scenes Goes to the Tropics!

Brennan’s Way Campus Road Expansion

Following their son’s death, Dan and Mary Ammentorp founded the Brennan Ammentorp Angel Foundation to support literacy and school zone safety programs. Many area schools have benefitted from the Ammentorp family’s efforts to support programs designed to enhance learning and safety, including Carmel Catholic. In past years, the Brennan Ammentorp Angel Foundation awarded grants to Carmel’s Serna Center for its programs that support students with learning differences by providing study skills resources and tutoring. In 2016, the Foundation awarded a school zone safety grant to widen and extend a former fire lane outside the science wing on the west side of campus. This road expansion has allowed the school to offer families two new drop-off and pick-up locations and has completed the circle drive around campus, easing traffic on campus and providing greater safety to pedestrians in our parking lots across campus. Dr. Bonham was pleased to dedicate Brennan’s Way with Mary, Dan and Meghan ’16 Ammentorp. 14

Building our Alumni Program

Want to Join the Alumni Board?

You can find upcoming event information on our alumni website: corsairalumni.org; on our Facebook page: Carmel High School Alumni; and on Twitter: @CorsairAlumni.

We are currently taking applications for those interested in becoming a member of our Alumni Board. Members attend a few meetings per year, and are involved in the brainstorming and execution of alumni engagement events and opportunities. Please go to corsairalumni.org/CCHSAAmembership to fill out the application.

We are always adding and expanding opportunities for alumni to be re-connected back to Carmel. It’s important that we have your current contact information so we can let you know about them. If you’re not receiving monthly alumni e-newsletters, we might not have your correct email address. Be sure to keep us up-to-date—send us an email at alumni@ carmelhs.org.

We also continue to develop a professional network of alumni through our LinkedIn group, which is exclusive to Carmel Alumni: Carmel Catholic High School Alumni Association. Please connect and post professional opportunities for other Carmel alumni.

COMPASS | Spring 2017

Carmel Catholic is working directly with Publishing Concepts (PCI) in order to update alumni data and publish a directory. You will be receiving emails and postcards over the next several weeks regarding this project. Please take the time to make the quick call-in to verify and update your contact information. We want the information to be as accurate as possible. The directories will be available for purchase, as well.
