August 14 Golf Classic provides crucial aid for students who lose a parent

Greetings!

Thank you for taking the time to read our Compass Magazine. I am grateful that you are taking an interest in reading about how Carmel Catholic fulfills its mission of care and love.

The importance of what we do is two-fold. We take great pride in the highquality preparation of our students for higher education. This was recently recognized in our 5th National Blue Ribbon School award (one of six high schools in the nation to have such an honor). But just as important as academic preparation, we instill the values of our BVM and Carmelite founders in our students. Carmel Catholic has historically been a very close school community. The values of kindness, care, love, and empathy are present. These values are not created by chance but are intentionally emphasized, fostered, and are part of our programs and language. We positively impact our students’ lives with these values at a deep level because we practice our faith at Carmel Catholic. We pray, celebrate Mass, and infuse Christ’s teachings in all we do. When you celebrate a Mass with over 1,000 teens, you will truly find the presence of Christ.

Every generation has its challenges. I contend that this generation is challenged because of the tremendous pressure placed upon them via social media, resulting in increased struggles with depression and negative self-thought. Accessibility to unfiltered information has changed our world and our youth. These challenges have made educating more complex, yet we are optimistic and hopeful because we have our faith. Carmel Catholic provides an education that is faith-filled and different.

I am grateful for all your support and prayers for our students. Many of you give in a variety of ways. It is inspiring to see how you sacrifice to better the experience for our students. “Corsairs Care”Making a Difference in the World

Our inaugural “Corsairs Care” was a huge success! Throughout the day, each class completed a 5k walk through the Mundelein Seminary, attended Mass, and participated in a Feed My Starving Children remotepacking event in the cafeteria.

Our amazing students, faculty, staff, and volunteers packed 182,304 meals to feed 497 kids for an entire year! Additionally, we raised almost $200,000. Our packed meals were sent to hungry children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand, and Haiti. Corsairs Care is truly global. As we give thanks to Almighty God for the blessings we have received and for the great work of Feed My Starving Children, we look to Christ to inspire us as faithful stewards and missionary disciples!

Carmel Awarded 1st Place for Responsible School Waste Plan

Carmel Catholic High School won first place in the Illinois Green School Project for its project on responsible waste practices. Students, teachers, and faculty focused on cutting down waste from the cafeteria, classrooms, and electronics. The program involved two classes: a dual-credit environmental science class and a dual-credit human ecological footprint class.

During the 2022-2023 school year, Carmel Catholic High School embarked on a plan to responsibly reduce waste generated by students, teachers, and faculty to ultimately achieve zero waste. The project focused primarily on cafeteria, classroom, and electronic waste.

In reviewing the project, one judge commented, “Wonderful efforts on the path to zero waste at Carmel! Student engagement and creativity are evident throughout the project; they have the data to back up their work. I loved all the educational materials (videos, games, etc.) to teach and test the school community’s knowledge.”

The award was presented at the virtual Green Schools Celebration on May 17.

Light the Night Draws Nearly 300 Young People

On February 25, nearly 300 young people, youth ministers, and parents attended Light the Night at Carmel Catholic High School. We were blessed to host such an awesome event that brought so many teens together from various schools and parishes in the area to celebrate our faith in Jesus. Many thanks to Bishop Jeffrey Grob (Episcopal Vicar, Vicariate I) for presiding at the Mass and Fr. Radley Alcantara (Associate Pastor, Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest) for serving as our homilist.

Bread of Life Teen Event

On June 24, Carmel Catholic High School hosted the Bread of Life Eucharistic night of encounter for teens across the Archdiocese. In collaboration with the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist as well as the Archdiocese of Chicago, many religious, teens, parents, and parishioners came together in our St. Titus Brandsma Chapel for adoration, testimonials from Carmel students Brigid Burke and Kevin Murphy, the celebration of Mass, and an outdoor Eucharistic Procession concluding with Benediction. We are so grateful to those who joined us in prayer, those who helped make this possible, and especially Bishop Jeffrey Grob and Bishop Robert Lombardo (auxiliary bishops of Chicago) for blessing us with their presence and presiding at Mass.

African American Heritage Prayer Service

In honor of Black History Month, Mrs. Andy Fitzpatrick, Dr. Brad Bonham, and Fr. Christian Shiu took over 30 Carmel students to Holy Name Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Annual African American Heritage Prayer Service. Carmel Catholic High School joined hundreds of students across the Archdiocese in celebrating the rich history and contributions of Black Catholics in the life of the Church!

Corsairs Visit Iceland on a STEM-Focused Trip

During spring break, 31 Carmel students spent the week in Iceland learning about geothermal energy, tectonic plates, and seismic activity. This STEM-focused field trip for juniors and seniors interested in sustainability included opportunities for scientific and cultural exploration of Iceland.

Chuck Gandolfi Retires After Nearly a Quarter Century as Carmel Catholic Head Baseball Coach

It’s not the game, but instead, all the individuals surrounding it that Chuck Gandolfi is going to miss the most. The longtime varsity head coach for the Carmel Catholic High School boys’ varsity baseball team recently announced this past spring that he would officially retire after the season, his 24th at the helm for the Corsairs.

And while it took Chuck some time to figure out exactly how many years he’s been here, he reckons his win total is roughly 640, although it’s one of the last things he’s ever kept track of. “I don’t count those things; other people do that for me,” he laughs.

Hundreds of players and several hundreds of parents, assistant coaches, and even umpires later, high school baseball became Chuck’s extended family. “Having (fellow coaches) Greg Krebs and Bill Taylor by my side to share in our collective successes, along with many great parents… those are the memories I’ll cherish,” he adds. “We developed many deep friendships over the years, which was always the most important.”

When it comes to the sport itself, there will certainly be plenty that Chuck will miss, especially when it comes to the competition and striving to always make his players better both on and off the field.

“I’m going to miss having to do something all the time that is baseball related; that little carrot at the end of the tunnel asking, ‘how good are we going to be and how are we going to get our kids to be better,’” he adds. “It was always a challenge going forward for us. I’ll always say ‘us’ because I’ve had a lot of great coaches over the years, but Krebs and Taylor were with me for the longest and were very influential for all the kids.”

A physical education teacher at Round Lake High School for 35 years, Gandolfi was born and raised in Mundelein. He graduated from Mundelein High School before playing baseball at Illinois State.

“For nearly a quarter century, Chuck Gandolfi has been a fixture of Carmel Catholic athletics,” said Athletic Director Nate Brill. “His name is synonymous with Lake County baseball, and the impact he’s had on this sport, not to mention the lives of countless individuals associated with this great game, will never be accurately measured or appropriately recognized.”

While coaching at Carmel, he would earn his 500th victory in 2008 during a game played in Champaign. Making the moment extra special was that his son Charlie, a freshman at the time, was a member of the varsity squad and shared the moment alongside his dad.

In addition to Charlie, Gandolfi also has two other sons, Josh and Thomas, along with his wife of 31 years, Linda. Chuck also wanted to recognize his beloved dog, Banks, named after his favorite baseball player of all time, Ernie Banks.

“The thousands of hours Chuck has spent tending to his field; instructing his players; and building relationships with students, parents, coaches, and umpires may never be matched,” added Brill. “We are grateful for his service and loyalty to Carmel Catholic and wish him the very best as he closes this chapter on his Hall of Fame coaching career.”

Royal Melbourne Country Club Hosts Carmel Catholic Golf Classic on August 14

The long-running and popular Carmel Catholic Golf Classic will be held for the first time at the Greg Norman-designed Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove. Scheduled for Monday, August 14, the Carmel Catholic Golf Classic is a community-wide event that draws over 150 alumni, current parents, past parents, and friends of Carmel Catholic.

All proceeds support Carmel Catholic students through financial assistance and provide crucial aid for Tuition Assurance which helps students that lose a parent complete their Corsair experience. Since 2018 alone, Tuition Assurance has directly helped 12 students who have lost a parent and their families, totaling over $230,000.

“We hope to make Carmel Catholic High School accessible to every family wishing for their student to be part of our faith-filled community,” said Golf Classic Chair Denise Spokas. “The Golf Classic has raised nearly $1 million over the past decade.”

In addition to golf, golfers participating in this year’s Carmel Golf Classic will be treated to a buffet lunch in the member pub and veranda, various on-course games, raffles, prize giveaways, and dinner and an open bar following the round. There will also be one par 3 offering a hole-in-one to win a car courtesy of Liberty Auto City.

Make a Gift to the Class of 1967 Legacy Scholarship

The Class of 1967 Legacy Scholarship was an endeavor started with the class committee for the 50-year reunion in 2017. The initial funding goal was reached in the spring of 2020. Lauren Caffarelli ’17 to Serve New Orleans Catholic School as Part of Notre Dame Graduate Teaching Fellowship

As much as Lauren Caffarelli has accomplished in life thus far, there is no doubt that the best is yet to come. And the 2017 Carmel Catholic alumna has felt God’s presence every step of the way.

During her time at Carmel Catholic, she had no problem keeping busy, running cross country, playing on the softball team all four years, and serving as captain for both squads during her senior year. Academically, she was active on the school math team and student council and would take her love of math to the University of Notre Dame, where she graduated in 2021 with a degree in Mathematics.

With a passion for teaching, religion, and Carmel, Lauren returned to campus earlier this year to help

the Mission and Ministry team lead Kairos, a fourday retreat experience in which students examine their relationships with God, self, and others. During the retreat, students hear talks and discuss them in small groups, experience prayer throughout each day, have an opportunity for Sacramental Reconciliation, and celebrate Eucharist together.

“Attending Carmel prepared me very well for college,” said Lauren. “Not just educationally but also in a holistic manner. I came to Notre Dame, not only for the academics, but for everything that Carmel offered me in terms of rigorous academics and having teachers who cared about me not just as a student, but as an individual.”

She recalls first falling in love with math while attending Mr. Titterton’s class and then as a member of the Corsair math team. She went to the University of Notre Dame thinking that her life’s path would be in medicine because she says she’s always been good at math and science. The math bug bit her during sophomore year, and that was when her initial path was decided.

Shortly after that, one of Lauren’s professors asked her to serve as a teaching assistant. That would lead to her tutoring students in math during her last three years as an undergrad.

After working for a technology company starting in 2021, she says she heard God’s voice again. She realized she loved teaching so much, leading her to apply for a master’s degree in education through Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) program, a two-year graduate teaching fellowship and formation experience in which participants serve in underresourced Catholic schools while also earning a cost-free M.Ed. from the University of Notre Dame.

She is now preparing to embark on the next chapter of her young life later this summer—as a math teacher at Academy of Our Lady High School in Marrero, LA, just outside New Orleans.

Over the last two years, Lauren would tutor several Carmel students in Math, and the joy she received solidified where her life’s path would eventually lead. “It’s the spark my student would receive when he or she would understand what we were working on,” recalls Lauren. “And the smile on their face that they know how to problem; I mean, oh man, I like this idea of teaching and can’t wait to be working with high schoolers.”

“Lauren is a relentlessly optimistic person who wants to make math more accessible for every student she teaches,” says Carmel’s Engineering Department

Chair and math teacher John Titterton. “Her calm, welcoming demeanor and empathy for every student, no matter their ability, will make her a truly great math teacher.”

“Faith is a huge part of my life, and I love that Carmel helped me grow as a student and a person. And that tremendously set me up for success,” said Lauren.

In addition to her parents, one of Lauren’s most significant role models is assistant Carmel softball coach Erin Heatherman ’07. “She’s also a Carmel graduate and is very strong in her Catholic faith,” says Lauren.

“I got to know her on the softball field and as my youth group leader, and she was just amazing. She showed me that you can talk about and show your faith anywhere, whether on the softball field, in church, or elsewhere. We’re still very close to this day.”

Another role model for Lauren is her 80-year-old Grandma Mimi, who lives in Michigan. “She rode 79 miles on her bike to mark her 79th birthday last year, and whenever I call her, she has 10,000 activities going on,” laughs Lauren. “Her outlook on life and the joy she brings others is amazing. She’s been a big role model in terms of outlook on life and finding joy in it all.”

And that joy is something that Lauren tries to incorporate into everything she does and certainly brings to everyone she meets. Her faith and positive outlook on life shine brightly and, with God’s help, will lead her down a righteous path, no matter where that may be. For now, it will meander its way south to Louisiana and her soon-to-be students at Academy of Our Lady High School.

Bob Malpede ’70 Honored Following a Storied Career in Golf

Much More than Stonewall Orchard Founder, White Deer Run GM/Head Pro

Editor’s Note: I first met Bob Malpede in the fall of 1998. At the time, I was in the early stages of my career in public relations, and Bob was looking for a PR rep for a golf course he was building in northwest suburban Grayslake— Stonewall Orchard Golf Club. I’ll never forget Bob and I standing on the 8th tee (my favorite hole on the course), a par five with wetlands spreading in all directions and a tee box impossibly surrounded by towering pine trees.

As we looked across what would arguably be one of the best public golf courses in the state, you could see the grass just starting to grow and that this layout would be special.

At the time, I had no idea I was standing alongside a true legend in the game of golf. Twenty-five years later, I am proud to call Bob a friend and to sit alongside him on the committee for the annual Carmel Catholic High School Golf Classic, the school where I also serve as head varsity boys golf coach.

If anyone was ever destined for a career in golf, it is Bob Malpede. Growing up on his father’s 9-hole golf course in McHenry, a young Robert Malpede would find his true passion for playing the game while attending Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein. Fast forward 50+ years, and his hard work would culminate with the prestigious achievement of being named an Illinois PGA Senior Master, an award he was honored with in the summer of 2022.

Local golfers are familiar with Malpede’s partnering with legendary course architect Arthur Hills to create the beautiful and challenging Stonewall Orchard in Grayslake, which opened in 1999. Stonewall would enjoy more than a decade of serving alongside Medinah and Olympia Fields Country Club as host of the Illinois PGA Section Championship.

Malpede would spend his remaining 16 years in business as head golf professional and general manager at White Deer Run Golf Club. He retired in 2021 and was named head professional emeritus at the Vernon Hills club. Although these were the final 16 years of an amazing career, Bob would cherish his time on the White Deer range, working with players of all ages and providing instruction just as his father had taught him.

A 1970 graduate, Malpede was among the first (if not the first) Carmel Catholic athletes to earn a trip to the high school state finals. At the time, he was a sophomore and shot a 72 at Brae Loch Golf Club in Grayslake to secure his ticket to state. Growing up in far northwest suburban Pistakee, he would ride the bus for an hour to and from Carmel High School for Boys.

I’m thrilled to continue my relationship by being able to serve on the committee for the Carmel Catholic Golf Classic (to be held August 14 at Royal Melbourne County Club),” said Malpede.

Following high school, Malpede studied at North Texas State University. Although he didn’t play golf for the school, he knew that the industry was one he was destined for. “I didn’t play golf there, but having a father that owns a golf course, I knew I wanted to work in golf in some capacity,” he recalls.

Following graduation from North Texas State, he moved to Stuttgart, Germany, to work for the U.S. government. While traveling to see his brother, a military officer, Malpede landed his first job in the golf industry at the Stuttgart Golf & Ski Club.

It’s here where he met his first big name in golf, a man by the name of Willie Hoffman, more commonly known as being coach to the great Bernhard Langer.

In the mid-1970s, Malpede returned to the U.S. and worked at Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan before moving just down the road to the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest. In the winter months, he would head west, landing jobs at famed private Los Angeles area country clubs Bel Air and Riviera.

To say he learned a lot during his time on the west coast is an understatement. At Bel Air, Bob had the pleasure of playing with Hollywood’s biggest superstars, including the likes of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath and country music star Glen Campbell.

“One of my fondest memories to this day is being serenaded on the 18th fairway by Campbell when he was the biggest name in Music,” laughs Malpede.

The year of 1983 was a big one for Bob. Not only did he gain his class a PGA membership, but he also assisted in hosting the PGA Championship. He recalls getting a taste of championship golf at Riviera and having a front-row seat to a classic battle between Jack Nicklaus and Hal Sutton, who went toe to toe in the final round.

That experience would lead to his first PGA professional position at Columbine Country Club in Colorado. During his time here is when where he met his wife, Tyra. After proposing, the couple moved back to the Chicago area a short time later.

It didn’t take long for Bob to land his first head professional assignment in Illinois. Upon moving back, the PGA of America called him to assist with the opening of Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora. With Malpede’s guidance, Stonebridge leaped into the Chicago golf scene as it would play host to the Ameritech Senior Open from 1992 to 1995.

“One of the most notable experiences from the Ameritech was the pairing of Michael Jordan and Arnold Palmer in the 1993 Pro-Am,” recalled Bob. “You’re talking about two of the world’s most recognizable and popular athletes at that time. The atmosphere was just crazy.”

Starting as a young boy, watching his father operate that nine-hole golf course in McHenry—to being among the first state golfers at Carmel Catholic High School—to Europe and then Hollywood—to golf course owner—and now the recipient of the IPGA Senior Masters Award—Bob Malpede’s life has certainly come full circle.

Following his acceptance of the Senior Masters honor, Malpede would admit he was a bit in shock.

“It’s an incredible honor because you never realize your peers are watching you throughout your career. It’s a great feeling to know that with all the hard work and long hours I put in over the years, there were people out there watching. I couldn’t be more excited about receiving this award.”

We are excited to welcome home classes celebrating milestone reunions in 2023. This new reunion concept combines the atmosphere of a large combined community event along with separate class reunion gathering spaces!

This new format lets you reunite with your classmates and look at the school’s changes while connecting with current students and faculty.

We introduce the Corsair Reunion Bash on Saturday, October 14, 2023, celebrating the 10, 20, 25, 30, and 40-year reunions. This year includes the ’83, ’93, ’98, ’03, and ’13 classes. Invitations will arrive in late August, so watch your mail.

This spectacular one-night event will include a community Mass, interactive tours, separate gathering spaces for each class to reunite and enjoy food and drinks, and a late-night bash featuring our special alumni entertainer: Stu “The Piano Guy.” We hope you will join us for this new alumni gathering.

For those classes with 5, 15, 35, and 45-year anniversaries (classes ’78, ’88, ’08, and ’18), we encourage you to use our homecoming Alumni Tent Party on Friday, September 29 as a meeting place and to plan your gatherings off campus that weekend. Carmel can help in providing class lists and promoting dates.

Also, starting in 2024, we will host a Corsair Emeritus Reunion for all classes celebrating 55 years or more of being proud Corsair Alumni. Details will be coming later this year.

Michael “Stu” Stoinski, aka “Stu the Piano Guy,” returned to Carmel Catholic during Catholic Schools Week and entertained students during their lunch periods!

Milwaukee Attorney Lauren Raupp was named Outstanding Young Trial Lawyer. Lauren is a partner at MacGillis Wiemer, LLC. Since joining the firm in 2019, Lauren’s work co-counseling jury trials has led to several significant verdicts, including a recent seven-figure verdict. This award recognizes a trial lawyer who has shown exceptional dedication to their craft and reflected WAJ’s mission of protecting access to the courts.

Dr. Samer Attar traveled to Syria to help victims and survivors of the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

John Heid and his wife, Kacie,

welcomed their second daughter, Emma Victoria Heid, on January 17, 2023. Audrey loves being an older sibling and is very protective of “baby sissy.” Emma was baptized at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roeland Park, KS, on March 12.

2009

Wyn Sullivan had an article published in the Journal of American College of Surgeons (JACS) regarding sustainability in the operating room. While at Carmel, Wyn was the co-President of Carmel’s Environmental Conservation Society. She is now a general surgical resident at Rush in Chicago and is doing research with Lurie/ Northwestern.

Jimmy Brzezinski returned to Carmel recently and spoke to Mr. Waddle’s Criminal Law class. Jimmy is a lawyer who does criminal defense work, and he and Joe Kreppein, CCHS security officer, talked to the class about how drug and alcohol crimes are handled in Illinois’s criminal justice system.

2015

Emma Kobitter graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, class of 2023 on May 13. She is currently employed at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital in Gainesville, FL. During her senior year at Carmel Catholic, Emma was named “Most Likely to Own 10 Dogs.”

Emma Ives received the TRISH scholarship from the Aerospace Nursing and Allied Health Professionals Society, awarded to a first-time AsMA conference attendee who demonstrates a compelling interest in the sustainment of space health or space flight.

Jeremy Kamman, senior at Kansas State, will spend the summer researching computational materials physics in Germany with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service, also known as DAAD, through its Research Internships in Science and Engineering, or RISE Germany. Kamman, studying physics and international studies with minors in classics and exploration and environmental geophysics, will conduct research at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany with DAAD RISE mentor Mike Bruckhoff, theoretical physicist at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Kate Senger was quoted in an article about Western Illinois University’s Brassfest.

Thanks to Owen Hodges for returning to Carmel to speak to STEM groups and science classes about his experiences since Carmel. Owen is a sophomore at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

2022

A New York Times article that includes Mary Clare Lacke was recently included in a New York Times article about TicTok business trends.

Christian Holmes shakes the hand of his recruiter, Staff Sgt. Amilcar Salinas after his Oath of Enlistment ceremony at Chicago’s Military Enlistment Processing Station on April 22. Holmes will go to recruit training this summer to earn the title Marine.

Isabella Pagano recently returned to the Alex Trebek Stage to compete in the first-ever Jeopardy! High School Reunion Tournament. As a high school freshman, she originally appeared in the 2018 Jeopardy Teen Tournament. Isabella is a student at Caltech studying Mechanical Engineering.

Carmel Catholic’s beloved therapy dog Corey is on summer break and is enjoying his time with Principal Jason Huther’s family. According to Mr. Huther, Corey misses attending school every day and seeing students, but it seems he thoroughly enjoys his break.
