Our Mission

Centered in Jesus Christ, Carmel Catholic is a college preparatory high school, empowering students to be servant leaders filled with zeal for faith and scholarship. Rooted in the charisms of the Order of Carmelites and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Catholic community embraces a tradition of dignity, diversity, and justice.

Business/Technology

The world of business affects our lives on all levels. It is important that students gain an overall understanding of business, its workings, its complexities, and its effects on their daily lives, not only as persons directly involved in business, but also as consumers, savers and investors in today’s global economy. It is also important to use technology effectively and responsibly.

Through design challenges and a distinct problem-solving model, introductory students learn how to model, improve and develop products, both in and out of the classroom. Students learn to sketch and illustrate solutions by hand and with sophisticated three-dimensional modeling software. Emphasis is placed on documenting the design process when analyzing and considering solutions. Students develop problem-solving skills and become leaders in terms of identifying and solving problems. English

English language skills serve as the foundation for communication. The responsibility of the English teacher is to help students use language to make sense of their own lives and to understand the lives of those they meet in the world. As a subject, English embodies the skills of reading, writing, speaking, researching and listening, as well as the content areas of literature and grammar, both of which contain identifiable bodies of knowledge. In all facets, however, the study of English serves to develop each learner’s practical communication skills and broader vision of relatedness among people.

Mathematics

The Mathematics Department’s philosophy is based upon an abiding respect for the individual and the learning process. The development of the constructs of mathematics trains the mind to think in a logical, creative and inquiring manner. The same constructs are essential in a technology driven society. The life skills of the individual require a fundamental understanding of mathematics ranging from basic arithmetic to the implementation of mathematics into today’s technology. The challenge is to develop the talents of each individual to his or her maximum ability, resulting in the desire for lifelong learning. This is achieved through the cooperation and efforts of parents, faculty and students.

Physical Education/Health

Physical Education consists of various wellness activities and health related topics presented to enhance students’ overall health today and in the future. It is our goal that students appreciate that good health is a precious gift from God that should be respected, cared for and nourished. Through the development of a physically active lifestyle, students become aware that the risk of illness can be reduced through positive health behaviors. Our focus consists of team sports, games, fitness, dance and rhythms as well as lifetime sports and activities. Within the context of these activities we stress the goals of sportsmanship, teamwork and Christian ethics. Students need to be given the knowledge and the opportunity to take responsibility for their own health.

Science is a dynamic discipline in which we seek to understand the universe. We must, therefore, grasp as foundation the body of knowledge that others before us have achieved and be able to confront—imaginatively and creatively—the questions that will widen and constantly increase our understanding. Technology, which grows out of scientific discovery, continually changes the world in which we live.

World Languages

The mission of the World Languages Department is based upon the Catholic view of humankind as a special gift from God. We recognize that all students benefit aesthetically, intellectually, psychologically, socially and spiritually from the study of another language. Language study is a combination of learning communication skills and becoming familiar with the culture of other civilizations: their customs, history, art and literature. This experience enables students to respect other people’s ideas, ways of thinking and behaviors and values, and at the same time helps students to reassess their own values. World language study plays a major role in the total educational program by preparing students to live their lives more fully and to strive for harmony and understanding in a global society.

Student Services

The Carmel Catholic High School Student Services department empowers every student within our community to become a faith-filled servant leader who is their own advocate through our rich resources intended to enhance their academic, social/emotional and college and career aspirations. The mission of the Campus Ministry Department is to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and responsible participation in the life and mission of the Church through celebration of Liturgy, diverse prayer experiences, Christian service and retreat experiences.

Campus Ministry cultivates leadership in Carmel Catholic students with the goal of nurturing future leaders in the Church. Liturgies, prayer services and retreats are primarily student planned and led.

The legacy inherited from our founders animates our efforts. The core values of freedom, charity, education and justice from our BVM heritage, along with the call to “live in the presence of God” through prayer, community and service from our Carmelite heritage, provide inspiration and give shape to each of our programs.

Christian Service

Carmel students are required to perform Christian service during their high school years. In doing so, they will make an impact on every level of society, near and far. Members of our founding orders, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Order of Carmelites, have given centuries of service to those in need through the imitation of Christ and his Blessed Mother, Mary. Our students continue this tradition with acts of service in a wide variety of settings so that the love and compassion of Christ may transform our world today.

The Goal of the Christian Service Program

Carmel Catholic High School’s mission statement calls our students to be servant leaders centered in Jesus Christ. Therefore, the goal of the Chrisitan Service program is to enable our students to become an incarnation of Christ in the world today, to be Christ’s hands and feet, bringing their individual experiences and God-given gifts to those they serve in order to impact our world for the greater good.

The Christian Service program, by creating opportunities where students can encounter and identify with people unlike themselves through service activities and meaningful reflection, helps students deepen their own religious and moral identity, develop a habit of mind committed to the common good, and identify with the solidarity of Christ, who was one with others.

• Freshman - 20 hours

• Sophomore - 20 hours

• Junior - 20 hours

Athletics

The mission of Carmel Catholic Athletics is to pursue excellence in sport, within the framework of an academic community dedicated to the institution’s educational and religious objectives. Each individual associated with Carmel Catholic Athletics will align themselves with the values of our school—community, academics, reverence, mission, enthusiasm, and leadership—while cultivating Christian virtue through athletic competition. We embrace dignity, diversity, and justice, as we answer Christ’s call to run with perseverance the race marked out for each of us.

Carmel Catholic High School has a large and successful athletic program with full teams in 26 boys and girls sports. Carmel’s athletic programs are dedicated to fostering a competitive spirit which emphasizes the need for team work, dedication, discipline, school and team pride and respect for self, teammates, coaches, opponents and officials.

More than 85 percent of Carmel students participate in interscholastic sports and intramural play. Carmel’s athletic program provides students the opportunity to actively participate in the school community.

Student Activities

Students have an opportunity to express themselves and excel in academics, ministry, athletics, the arts and more. By participating in extracurricular activities, students develop skills such as leadership, working with others, responsibility and self-discipline. Activities build skills and connections which strengthen our individual students and our community. Many students take initiative to propose a new idea for a one time student event or launching of a regularly meeting club. Each year our student groups are updated based upon student needs and interests.
