CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Dear Members, In August my fellow directors and I had the pleasure of attending Canterbury’s Annual Staff Awards Night to present the various awards. It was terrific to be able to recognise the efforts of our wonderful team over the past twelve months. On the night 45 staff from across the Club were recognised for their 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and even 30 year milestones. Additionally, staff were acknowledged for going above and beyond and for their commitment to the community. I truly believe that we are blessed with the best staff in the entire club industry and the care and respect that our employees have for our members is a credit to the team. At the end of August, the Club’s community program was finalised for 2018/19. I am pleased to report that during the year we were able

CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members, As we enter the festive season I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Christmas is always special occasion at Canterbury. The Club looks even more spectacular with beautiful decorations throughout and the external façade running a special Christmas themed display. From Friday, December 6, Santa and his helper will visit the Club each night to meet with the kids and pose for photos on his Santa throne. All of the Club’s restaurants will be open on Christmas day for the perfect fuss free feast. Places are limited and fill up fast so make sure you get your booking in early. With summer fast approaching our chefs have been busy designing fresh new menus and specials for you to enjoy. Lavico will also be open on Wednesday and Thursday nights in November

to assist more than 110 organisations and individuals, who collectively shared in more than $1.2 million of grants and donations. This money goes to support local charities, schools, junior sport and other worthy causes. The majority of the recipients that Canterbury supports are local to our three clubs, with the money going to improve the communities where you, our Members, live. You can find details of our community program including all of the recipients on our website. On behalf of the Board I would like to wish all of our Members a Merry Christmas and a Safe, Prosperous and Happy New Year.

George Coorey | Chairman

and December with a special pizza bar where the kids can learn from our staff how to make the perfect pizza which they will then get to enjoy for themselves. Don’t forget that in addition to the terrific restaurants at Canterbury, Members also have access to two fantastic restaurants at The Lakemba Club and Moxon Sports Club. Five Spices is our newest restaurant serving up authentic Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine at Lakemba. The flavours are sensational, and I encourage you to give it a try. Bistro on Moxon serves an Italian inspired menu at Moxon Sports with lots to choose from and plenty of space for the kids to run around in a relaxed atmosphere. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

Students from Wiley Park Public School learning about water safety at Roselands Aquatic Centre

LOCAL YEAR 4 KIDS LEARN TO BE WATER SAFE In a country surrounded by water like Australia, it pays to be water safe and water wise as local Year 4 primary students discovered through the Canterbury Aquatic Survival Skills Program. The swim program, now in its third year of running in collaboration with Canterbury-Bankstown City Council and Royal Life Saving NSW, had approximately 400 Year 4 students from nine local primary schools participate at Roselands Leisure and Aquatic Centre over the course of several weeks. Students learned how to do safe entry/exits, bubbles, floating, torpedo swim and how to remain calm while submerged into water. They also did practical lessons on water safety outside the pool including recognising hazards at the beach, rivers, lakes and pools, how to spot dangers and how to be water smart.

“I encourage all parents to continue having the water safety conversation with their children as the weather warms up for the summer and more and more people swim in pools, lakes and beaches. Education on water safety should never stop and Canterbury is happy to do our bit with spreading the message,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. Thank you to the Year 4 students of Belmore North PS, Belmore South PS, Campsie PS, Hampden Park PS, Lakemba PS, McCallum’s Hill PS, Narwee PS, Wangee Park PS and Wiley Park PS. We hope you enjoyed the program and don’t forget to always be water safe! Expressions of interest from local primary schools are now being accepted for the 2020 program. For more information, please contact marketing@canterbury.com.au

Students also got the chance to try on life jackets and practice pool noodle rescues with each other.

MEET CANTERBURY’S RAVE CHAMPIONS Once a year Canterbury League Club takes the opportunity to recognise the achievements of their staff members at their annual Staff Awards Night. One of the awards presented on the night was the RAVE Champion award – RAVE stands for Real Acts of Value and Excellence. Every year it is presented to four staff members who exhibit Canterbury’s CARE values in their day-to-day work and go that extra mile to provide a memorable experience to their customers and each other. Congratulations to this year’s RAVE Champion winners: Noor Uddin, Parthena Aslanidis, Marcel Eid and Sofoklis Zagas!

Best thing about working at Canterbury: The feeling I get from helping members from all walks of life get fitter and healthier through exercise. I was fortunate to land my dream job at a young age.

Best thing about working at Canterbury: The amazing people definitely make the workplace that much better. Having a good crew sets such a great aura in the environment.

Staff pro tip: Instead of heading back from work and flopping onto the couch to watch your favourite Netflix show, head to the gym and catch up from a treadmill, bicycle or cross trainer. This way, you can enjoy watching your program but get fit at the same time!

Staff pro tip: I am probably one of the worst people to ask about food tips as I struggle picking favourites – I eat absolutely everything. In saying that, there is a variety of menu options throughout the Club which is really good.

Marcel Eid, Security and Surveillance

Best thing about working at Canterbury: The Club provides for its workers and the positive relationships you build with employees and members.

Best thing about working at Canterbury: Having great bosses to work under, and building a good relationship with staff and patrons. How did you feel when your name was called out as a RAVE Champion? I felt appreciated and wanted to celebrate with a Tooheys or two.

How did you feel when your name was called out as a RAVE Champion? Once the shock was over and I was walking to the stage, it felt like an honour.

MEET PERSONAL TRAINER MILENA Meet our trainer Milena, who is part of the C-Life reception and training crew What food do you crave most often? Definitely pasta or chicken nuggets What job would you be absolutely terrible at? Anything requiring creativity or art skills. I think very analytically with graphs and figures; inventing and thinking abstractly is not one of my strengths. So when it came to the creative writing section in the HSC English paper, I struggled!

If you could choose one city to live in for the rest of your life which would you choose? With not having travelled much outside Australia, I’d say Melbourne What are three things you can’t live without? My dog, Pepito. My phone and can’t forget a cup of coffee Mountain or Beach? Beach 100%

Malaysian food is mainly influenced by Chinese, Indonesian, Thai and Indian cuisine. Some of the herbs and spices typically used include fresh chilli, ginger, garlic, and lemongrass to make the sauces. Meat and seafood dishes are often marinated with these herbs and spices before they are cooked. Vegetables are stir-fried. Some common dishes are rice, curry, and noodles. Given the large variety to choose from you don’t have to be a food connoisseur to enjoy Malaysian and Singaporean cusine. Try these summer delicacies during your next visit to Five Spices!

MALAYSIAN CURRY WITH CHICKEN Chicken pieces cooked in a special blend of curry powder, coconut cream, ground almond, garlic, onion powder and mixed herbs.

NASI GORENG Fried rice with homemade sambal belacan paste and shredded chicken, topped with sunny side up egg.

The coconut cream gives this dish a smooth and creamy taste to balance out the spice.

A classic favourite full of satisfying flavours that you’ll never get sick of.

ROTI CANAI Malaysian grilled fluffy pancakes served with chicken curry sauce. Be prepared to enjoy this crispy and flakey snack!
