Dear Members, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our Members, staff and suppliers for their generosity in supporting Canterbury’s campaign to raise money for those affected by the devastating bushfires that swept across Australia this past summer. At the time of writing we have raised or donated more than $71,136.51 for this worthy cause. Collectively the Club industry has donated millions of dollars for drought and bushfire relief, in addition to the work at ground level supporting volunteers and providing emergency accommodation and support to affected areas and my congratulations go out to the entire industry for coming together to help those affected by this terrible tragedy. The Bulldogs will officially open the 2020 season with a blockbuster game against traditional rivals

Dear Members, In my last column I advised that The Dynasty was closing at the end of January for renovation. At the time of writing the renovations were underway with the refurbished restaurant due to reopen shortly. I am pleased to advise that the Board have appointed a new contractor to run The Dynasty, with John Lim and his company being the successful candidate. John was the original proprietor of The Dynasty and owns and operates a number of successful restaurants across Sydney. We are thrilled to welcome John back to the Canterbury family. For details on the reopening of The Dynasty, please follow our social media channels or visit our website for the latest updates. Later this month we will be launching an exciting new promotion to give one lucky Member the chance to win their choice of $50,000 in Cash or

the Parramatta Eels on Thursday 12 March at Bankwest Stadium. After they stormed home in 2019 I am excited to see this young team continue to improve this year. We will have all Bulldogs games broadcast in the Club so if you can’t get to the game then come to Canterbury to watch the action with other Bulldogs supporters. There will also be a selected number of special events this year with Bulldogs Legends and Ambassadors on hand to meet with Members before the games so keep an eye out for these events on our website and social media channels. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I wish all of our Members and Guests a safe and happy Easter.

George Coorey | Chairman

a luxury round the world holiday valued at nearly $60,000. I know there has been plenty of debate around the office about what we would choose if we were to win such a prize and I’m sure there will be similar debate amongst our Members. As always entry is free, all you need to do is swipe your Member Card when you enter and hand over your Card when dining to earn an additional entry for every $10 you spend. It’s then as simple as turning up on the draw nights and crossing your fingers that your ticket will be pulled from the barrel to earn a chance at the Major Prize which will be drawn on 7 May. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

COMMUNITY

Canterbury was proud to raise money for Bushfire Relief

CLUB DONATES MONEY TO BUSHFIRE RELIEF Canterbury League Club will be donating $71,136.51 to the bushfire appeal after fundraising through several worthwhile initiatives around the Club.

Chickens, Lion and Will & Co to provide additional funds with $5 from every chicken schnitzel, $5 from selected beers and $1 from every coffee sold at the Bakehouse donated to the bushfire appeal.

Whilst January heralded a new year for many, the thought of communities who continue to be affected by drought and bushfires weighed heavily on everyone’s minds. Wanting to assist, Canterbury kicked off the bushfire appeal by joining forces with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to commit $50,000 to the cause. Donation boxes were placed around Canterbury, The Lakemba Club and Moxon Sports Club and they quickly filled up due to the generosity of Members and staff. Members also had the option of donating at the food and beverage outlets by rounding up their bills to the nearest dollar. On the first weekend in February Canterbury partnered with M&J

When: Term 3, Week 7-10 (Mon 31 Aug Friday 25 Sept) Where: Roselands Aquatic Centre

To top it all off, every dollar donated from Members throughout this period was matched by Canterbury’s Board up to $10,000, bringing the total donation amount to $71,136.51. “We are deeply saddened by the bushfires taking hold of our country and the devastating effect on communities, wildlife and our firefighters,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. “From board level to members to staff – everyone rallied together and chipped in donations – it’s amazing to see how much we can accomplish for the bushfire-affected community when we come together. Thank you to everyone who donated.”

MEET THE TEAM

MEET RHYS WOLLOGHAN FROM I.T. For a large organisation like Canterbury the Information Technology (IT) department plays an important role in ensuring a smooth user experience for all Members, guests and staff. In this digitally-connected era, we are constantly surrounded by electronic appliances, the internet, computers and mobile phones – and if it has a circuit board inside it, then it would have most likely passed through Rhys’ hands in the past 12 years of his career at Canterbury. “I started working in the gaming department, where my first shift was picking up glasses on the gaming floor,” said Rhys. “I switched to IT three months later after being offered an interview due to my TAFE qualification and I had some IT experience.” Rhys and the IT team are the tech geniuses to call when something IT-related decides to stop working or shows the Windows’ blue screen of death. He is a whiz on all the computers, laptops, and tablets that staff use, and no task is ever too small. He also services a multitude of other things including Canterbury’s Wi-Fi access, point of sale tills in the restaurants,

telephones connecting the different back offices, and the televisions peppered around the Club just to name a few. Hardware is only half of the puzzle; Rhys is also across the variety of software programs that keep the Club running smoothly. “On average, Canterbury and the Bulldogs’ websites will receive around 3,000 spam emails per day. We use a combination of systems to try and combat spam including spam blockers, antivirus protection, custom firewall internet protocol policies, and custom mail filtering policies,” said Rhys. When Rhys isn’t in the office, you can find him keeping active playing footy for the Belrose Eagles in the Sydney Shield. “I’ve played for Manly Sea Eagles in the first year of the Toyota Cup when it was the new Under 20s comp back in 2008. One of my teammates was Kieran Foran who currently plays first grade for the Bulldogs!” said Rhys. “I support Melbourne Storm, played for Manly and work at the Bulldogs. Even though I love watching Melbourne win, I still have a soft spot for the Bulldogs whenever they win because there’s always a happier vibe around the Club.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO JOSE PEREIRA AND ANDREW HUME Jose was the lucky winner of the Win a Trip to Tokyo competition. Jose will be flying to Tokyo in April. Andrew scored himself a brand new Sea-Doo Spark. Find out how you can win a trip for two to Adelaide for the NSW v QLD Game I on page 35.

MileS toNE MeN

With the 2020 season fast approaching, there are plenty of player milestones to celebrate. The new decade could see a host of players reach important milestones and achievements in their NRL careers. Kieran Foran (199) only needs one more game to reach 200 NRL games, while Josh Jackson (181) is on track to reach the milestone against the Newcastle Knights in round 20 at Bankwest Stadium. Jackson’s achievement will also coincide with him becoming the 13th player in the club’s history to play 200 or more NRL games for Canterbury. Tongan International Will Hopoate (147) & Queensland representative Dylan Napa (142) are closing in on 150 NRL games, while Sauaso Sue’s (127) milestone will be depend on his recovery from an ACL injury. New recruits Dean Britt, Joe Stimson and Sione Katoa, along with rookies Jake Averillo and Iasiah Tass; will be looking to join the list of 800 players who have debuted for the Bulldogs before them. The club has eight out of its 12 home matches in family friendly timeslots, so it's certainly shaping as a great season for Bulldogs Members and fans to watch their side in 2020 and one that will see plenty of records and milestones fall throughout. Our opening home games of 2020 are now on sale, we will also be hosting the first “Home Away from Home” event at Canterbury League Club for our Magic Round match against Canberra where you can join us at the Sports Bar to cheer on Jacko and the boys! Local trainer shines on the World-Stage Congratulations to C-Life Personal Trainer Melinda Theore who came first at the Australasian National Bodybuilding (ANB) Association National Pro Championship and qualified for the Drug-Free Athletes Coalition International Miami Pro Show a few weeks later where she placed second. Her amazing journey to becoming a world-class bodybuilder began in July last year. Mel went through a 14-week diet and training program to prepare for the ANB Championships. The training included low-intensity cardio and plenty of weight training whilst maintaining a strict diet of carbohydrates and proteins. Food options consisted of egg whites, wholegrain bread, meats, vegetables, rice, and fruits. Mel said, “I learned how important it is to create a strong mindset in keeping focused to reach an elite level”.

Preparation is crucial leading into any competition - as the Miami finals grew closer, Mel became more strategic about her food intake and the quantity. This helped her be in the best shape possible to compete against the world’s top bodybuilders. The last 48 hours leading into the event were filled with mixed emotions as Mel was excited to showcase 17 weeks of preparation. After a long day of posing and routines, it was result time. After a close decider between teammates, Mel achieved an amazing second place in her category. Medals tucked away after the event, Mel celebrated by treating herself to some delicious donuts from The Salty Donuts in Miami. Great achievement Mel, you’ve done C-Life proud!!

KELLERT BROTHERS COACHING TENNIS SUCCESSES Brothers John and Richard Kellert are a force to be reckoned with on and off their beloved tennis courts – they are tennis coaches and small business entrepreneurs handling their own administration and marketing for their tennis brainchild, Kellert Tennis Academy.

courts running group classes and private lessons with players as young as four years old, and as mature as in their 60s. And for anyone thinking about starting tennis?

“I started Kellert Tennis Academy at Moxon about four years ago now. Richard joined me six months later and we have been working together to build a strong centre ever since,” said John.

“Come and take one or two private or semi-private lessons with a friend or family member who also wants to learn. You’ll get an understanding of the basics and then from there you will be ready to join one of our group classes or bring some friends to the courts for a game.”

Between the two of them, they have 20 years of experience playing competitive tennis from a young age and a further combined 35 years of coaching experience.

“The great thing about working with your brother is that there is a trust there that allows us to freely share ideas. This is an advantage for our clients – whether it be technical, strategy, fitness or the mental aspects of the game, our clients can come to either of us and know that they will receive similar information,” said John. “It is a dynamic that I believe to be particularly important for our business and we work with our other coaches to achieve a similar effect, which has been very successful thus far.” Most days, you can find John and Richard on the Moxon tennis
