CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Dear Members, I am pleased to report that on 27 May Greg Pickering officially commenced as Canterbury’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Greg joins us after eighteen years as CEO of the Mounties Group, where he oversaw the growth of Mounties into the largest club group in Australia. Please join me in welcoming Greg to the Canterbury team. On Sunday 5 May I was thrilled to draw the winner of our KIA Sorento giveaway. The night was a huge success for the Club and a terrific test of our new car park and facilities. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the promotion, we are already working on plans for the next one. On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I would like to congratulate my fellow Director and Canterbury League Club Life Member Steve Mortimer on his induction into the NSWRL Hall of Fame. This is a fitting recognition for a true Bulldog great.

George Coorey | Chairman

The facilities available to our Members are truly world class and I am looking forward to working with the Board, Management and Staff on ways to deliver even more exciting opportunities for the future. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club.

Greg Pickering | Chief Executive Officer

COMMUNITY

VARIETY ENRICHING KIDS’ LIVES Long time community partner, Variety – the Children’s Charity, has received a $20,000 donation from Canterbury League Club to support children who are sick, disadvantaged or living with special needs.

“Canterbury’s relationship with Variety has now spanned almost a decade and over $120,000 in total grants. We are proud to have contributed to enriching the lives of many children with special needs living in our community,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

The donation allows Variety to provide practical help and essential support to kids and their families by purchasing medical and mobility supplies and equipment, therapy services, and paying for things like vehicle modifications and educational resources. Without adequate support, these kids would have higher rates of health and behavioral problems and are less likely finish school. “We receive no Government funding so we rely on the generous support of our community sponsors including Canterbury League Club. It’s only because of this support that we can help close to 40,000 kids in NSW and ACT with grants and programs that are designed to increase their quality of life, self-esteem, connection to the community and decrease the strain on families,” said Sally Ross, Motoring Events Coordinator at Variety – the Children’s Charity. Some of the children that Variety supports

These children will be receiving an insulin pump from Canterbury and Diabetes Alive

INSULIN MACHINE SAVING LIVES A $20,000 donation to Diabetes Alive from Canterbury League Club has helped purchase several life-saving insulin pumps for young children living with Type 1 diabetes. Through Diabetes Alive’s Insulin Pump Program, the new insulin machines are donated to children from families who can’t afford private health insurance and are unable to afford one. The device offers children an opportunity to live a long healthy life, minimising the complications that are associated with uncontrolled blood sugar levels. This year Diabetes Alive will be assisting William (2 years old), Poppy (3 years old), Sophie (3 years old), Elijah (4 years old), Lachlan (13 years old), Bailey (15 years old) and Ashlee (15 years old).

4

Without funding for the insulin pump machine, each child on average would have had to inject themselves 7 times a day, 49 times a week and this amounts to 2,555 injections in a year. The pump helps by cutting down the amount of time it takes for young children to inject themselves. “The partnership between Canterbury League Club and Diabetes Alive has helped many young diabetics lead more regular everyday lives. No one enjoys testing themselves multiple times a day so it’s great that these pumps can bring some relief,” said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.

COMPETITION WINNERS

She is ecstatic to have won – she couldn’t believe it when her name was called out. On the draw night, the Club was filled with thousands of members who came for a chance to win and to witness the historical moment. On behalf of everyone at Canterbury, we congratulate Janette and thank everyone who participated in the draw. Stay tuned for the next one!

MEET THE TEAM assisting in events that may occur whilst he is on his shift. “The first day I worked at Canterbury was a Saturday night in November 1996. The Club was pumping with music, bars and restaurants were full, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be here for a long time,” said Paul. “Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with some great personalities – from managers to our cleaners – who all work hard to keep the Club at the top of the hospitality industry. During my time at Canterbury, I have also had the opportunity to be involved with the Bulldogs football team security on special game days and have enjoyed the experience immensely.” But what Paul really enjoys about his job is talking to all of the patrons who walk through the Club’s doors. Every day on average, over 2,500 patrons visit Canterbury and Paul has the pleasure of greeting these patrons and assisting them. When Paul isn’t at the Club working, he is spending time with his wife Rose and three sons; Daniel, Jake and Peter. Paul looks forward to welcoming you into the Club

MEET PAUL AKKARY Paul is a familiar face to many as he does his daily security rounds at the Club. He has been part of the Canterbury team for 23 years in the Security and Customer Relations Department as a Team Leader. During Paul’s shift, he ensures that all areas of the Club are secured, and all facilities are used safely. The role also involves

What you might not know about Paul is that he was a talented rugby league player who now spends his weekends watching his boys play the game he loves. Over the years, Paul played for a variety of teams including Newtown, Souths, Penrith and our very own Bulldogs. Next time you’re at Canterbury, be sure to look out for Paul and say hello. He is always ready to greet you with a smile and assist you.

Steve Mortimer celebrating with teammates in 1985

MORTIMER INDUCTED INTO NSWRL HALL OF FAME Canterbury Director and Bulldog Legend Steve Mortimer has recently been inducted into the NSWRL Hall of Fame for leading the Blues to win their first series in 1985. A massive congratulations to Steve on this wonderful achievement!
