CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Trade from late December onwards showed a significant improvement on the previous year with the Club’s restaurants in particular recording record numbers. Along with strong patronage, we have also seen strong membership growth with Canterbury now boasting more than 62,000 Members. This month we are launching a fantastic promotion giving Members a chance to win a brand new top of the range Kia Sorrento. Valued at more than $64,000 this luxurious 7 seat SUV will soon be gracing the driveway of one lucky Member. To enter all you need to do is visit Canterbury during the promotional period and swipe your member card to receive a ticket. You can get a ticket every day so the more you visit the more chances you have to win. Check out the details on page 6. The Bulldogs start their season on Saturday 16th March with an away game against the Warriors in Auckland, New Zealand. After a strong finish to last season and with a number of new recruits on board, there is plenty of anticipation for this year. As always, we will have all Bulldogs games broadcast in the Club so if you can’t get to the game then come to Canterbury to watch the action with other Bulldogs supporters and enjoy a meal or one of our game day specials. Welcome to the March/April edition of the Canterbury Magazine.

On behalf of the Board, Management and Staff of Canterbury I wish all of our Members and Guests a safe and happy Easter.

The holiday season was a fantastic test of the Club’s new infrastructure, with January being Australia’s hottest ever month on record. I am pleased to report that the Club came through its first big test with flying colours. George Coorey Chairman

MEET THE TEAM

George Cocokios, in front of the new Engage Rewards Concierge Desk

GEORGE COCOKIOS Meet George Cocokios, Canterbury League Club’s Customer Services Manager, who recently celebrated 40 years of service. George’s first day at Canterbury way back in 1978 involved picking up glasses and cleaning ash trays. He was nervous and excited but determined to work his way up to the top. It wasn’t long before George became a Supervisor, over the years rising to Assistant Operations Manager, Operations Manager, Executive Manager and finally to his current role of Customer Services Manager. ‘My role is to manage the customer experience aspects of Reception and the Engage Rewards Loyalty program. I work with a great team of Hosts and Reception employees who communicate, promote and upsell the benefits of membership and the loyalty program,’ said George. Over the years, George has had many iconic Canterbury League Club moments. Some of these include working 12 Grand Finals and when the Bulldogs played at Belmore Sports Ground. George recalls the Club was packed with supporters and players from both sides creating a memorable atmosphere and vibe. During the 1980s, George’s charisma and suave landed him a role as a runway model for Grace Bros (now Myer) during a Melbourne Cup Luncheon held at The Club. It was lights, camera, action and George was given a lesson on how to walk and pose before he walked out on a runway amidst hundreds of members and guests. ‘My role is diverse just like a quote from a mentor of mine who told me ‘My job role is one big interruption.’ Apart from checking emails and attending scheduled meetings I am at the coal face

4

with our members and guests. No two days are the same which makes my job at the Club exciting,’ said George. ‘I enjoy my role at the Club and I have grown with the Club. During my time, I have had many opportunities such as travelling with work colleagues to the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas. Being at the Club, I have also had the chance to develop my skills and knowledge through courses such as The Gaming Managers Development Course (GMDC) and was fortunate to attend a course run by the University of Las Vegas (UNLV).’ George’s career experience and knowledge is widely sought at the Club. This has made him the perfect candidate to mentor and coach younger staff members. In 2012, George’s leadership and mentoring skills were put through the paces when he participated in ‘Max Potential’ a youth leadership program that helped Year 12 school students focus on their local community and ways to improve it. Outside of Canterbury, George can be found enjoying long walks, playing tennis, attending Sixers BBL cricket games with friends and watching his son play Water Polo for Cronulla. ‘It’s staff members like George that have become a familiar face of the Canterbury League Club family for our members and guests,’ said George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club. ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank George for his service to the Club over the last 40 years. The hard work and determination that George has shown is a reflection of the genuine passion he has for the Club and our members.’

COMMUNITY

Staff at St Basil’s Nursing Home will be provided with Greek lessons

ST BASIL’S STAFF ARE LEARNING GREEK $15,000 has been donated to St Basil’s Nursing Home to help fund a new project that will teach staff how to speak Greek. The lessons are in collaboration with Macquarie University and will run 3 times a week over a one-year period at the Lakemba facility. To ensure St Basil’s Nursing Home remains the leader in aged care facilities in the Greek community, 150 staff will be given language lessons to ease the communication barrier between residents and staff. Currently, only 18% of staff at St Basil’s speak Greek. Residents will often ask for basic needs such as water or assistance to use the bathrooms. Often, non-Greek speaking staff members will seek a Greek staff member to translate what the resident is asking for. To be able to train staff to speak and respond with basic words and sentences in Greek will allow residents to feel more at home and find comfort.

Staff will be taught basic sentences that will be taught to include “I need some water”, “I want to go to bed” and “I am experiencing chest pains.” These basic sentences and phrases will be relevant and will cover content applicable in daily health and life. ‘Through our support, St Basil’s Nursing Home will be able to bridge the communication barriers that staff and residents are currently experiencing,’ George Coorey, Chairman of Canterbury League Club said. ‘We are proud to support a community initiative that will help provide more efficient response time to the residents and create a home like environment.’
